Your Children Count on YOU to Keep Them Cavity Free!
Cavities are almost completely preventable when healthy dental habits are started early. Primary/baby teeth need to stay healthy for 6-12 years.
Teach your child to drink from a regular cup as you wean from a bottle and sippy cup at age 12 months
Take your child to dental checkups every 6 months to prevent painful problems– don’t wait for tooth decay to start
Help your child until age 8 to brush for 2 minutes with fluoride toothpaste at least two times a day, especially after breakfast and before bed. For children ages 2-5, use toothpaste the size of a pea
Floss your child’s teeth daily as soon as teeth touch and start to teach your child to floss around age 4
Feed your child healthy foods at regular times and make sure they drink water throughout the day. Limit snacks, candy and sweet drinks

Children Cavity

Important Dental Tips Inside…
Keeping Your Teeth Healthy During Pregnancy is Good for Your Baby!
Baby Teeth Do Matter!
Your Children Count on YOU to Keep Them Cavity Free!
Keeping Your Teeth Healthy During Pregnancy is Good for Your Baby!
Parents’ oral health is very important during pregnancy for healthy birth outcomes. Oral health is essential to overall health and well-being.
Brush your teeth with a soft toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste in the morning and brush and floss before bedtime
Eat a balanced diet that is low in sugar to help prevent tooth decay. Eat foods that have sugar at mealtimes only
Rinse your mouth with water or a mouth rinse that has fluoride if you cannot brush your teeth because you feel sick
Drink water or milk instead of sweet drinks. Drink water throughout the day, especially between meals
Visit your dentist. Dental care during pregnancy is safe
Baby Teeth Do Matter! Healthy baby teeth help children chew food easily, smile, speak clearly, feel good about themselves and save room for adult teeth.
Wipe baby’s gums with a wet washcloth at least twice daily, in the morning and right before bed to remove damaging bacteria
Put baby to bed without a bottle. Offer baby a cup at age 6 months. Do not give baby sweet drinks
Schedule baby’s first dental checkup when first tooth appears or by age 1– whichever comes first. Establish a dental home where the dental staff knows your child and will keep a record of dental care received
Brush baby’s teeth after breakfast and before bedtime using a soft-bristle toothbrush with a dab of toothpaste the size of a grain of rice until age 2
Use a different spoon, cup and toothbrush than your child to stop the spread of germs that can cause cavities

Key Informant Interviews
Dear Parent/Guardian,
Welcome to WIC Dental Days!
Preventive dental health services are provided at no cost to you through a grant from First 5 Placer. Services for your child include a basic oral health screening and fluoride varnish application to assist with cavity prevention. If you are pregnant you can receive an oral health assessment. In addition, you will be given important dental health information and FREE dental supplies. These services are not intended to replace dental services that you receive in a dental office or your regular oral hygiene practices at home.
You will find a lot of useful information in this folder:
Fluoride Varnish for a Healthy Smile contains information about fluoride and instructions about what to do after your child has had the fluoride varnish applied.
Keep Your Children Cavity Free! has key tips to prevent cavities that are covered during your WIC appointment that you can keep referring back to at home.
The Dental List brochure is provided by the CHDP Program. If you or your child has health coverage through Medi-Cal, then you have dental coverage through Denti-Cal. If you are in need of a “dental home”, a dental office where the staff knows you and keeps a record of your dental care, you can contact an office in this brochure.
Your Child Has Dental Coverage! provides information about children’s dental services covered by Medi-Cal (Denti-Cal) and Covered CA health plans. If you are a parent with Medi-Cal, Medi-Cal Adult Dental Benefits has coverage information for you.
If you don’t have dental insurance, the Placer County Public Health Resources guide lists some local resources that may be helpful.
Make it a Habit! is a tooth brushing calendar for your child to put a sticker on each time teeth are brushed. And I Choose Tap Water for a Sparkling Smile is a coloring sheet for your child to help remind him/her that drinking water -instead of sweetened drinks- plays an important role in dental health.
After seeing the dental professional for preventive dental services, you will leave with a paper that includes the dental services which were provided, the goals you are committed to working on, and dental follow-up recommendations based on the oral health screening. If you have any questions, please contact the Children’s Oral Health Coordinator, Heidi Knost, whose business card is attached to this folder.
Thank you for participating in WIC Dental Days. By obtaining preventive dental services, you are taking important steps to keep you and your child cavity free!

Oral Health Screening and Fluoride Varnish Consent Form
Dear Parent/Guardian,
Preventive dental services during WIC Dental Days are offered at no cost to you through a grant from First 5 Placer. Services include a basic oral health screening, fluoride varnish application and dental health education to assist your child with cavity prevention. These services are not intended to replace dental services that you receive in a dental office. To establish and maintain oral health it is necessary to get regular and complete dental check-ups by a dentist and to continue proper daily tooth care at home.
The benefits of fluoride varnish include strengthening your child’s teeth and helping to prevent tooth decay. It is safe and easy to apply. Sometimes after the application, the teeth will appear yellow. That can be brushed off the next morning after it is applied. The teeth will be the same as before, but the fluoride varnish provides an extra layer of protection against cavities.
Statistical data is collected by First 5 Placer and the Placer County Children’s Oral Health Program related to the kinds of services that are being utilized. Statistical data does NOT identify clients by name and all privacy guidelines are followed when statistical reports are developed. All client records are confidential and are kept in a secure manner that enhances privacy and confidentiality procedures at all times.
By signing this consent form, Placer County Children’s Oral Health Program may contact you to ensure that your child accesses follow-up dental services. Further, you will not hold the dental professional performing the screening responsible for the oral health consequences or results should you choose NOT to follow the recommendations discussed.
*******************************************************************************************
Please complete and sign the consent form below which will allow the dental professional to look at your child’s teeth and to apply fluoride varnish. It will also allow statistical data to be shared with First 5 Placer and the Placer County Children’s Oral Health Program.

Estimado padre/tutor legal:
