AUGUST MISSION PROJECT: WESLEY FOUNDATION
The Missions Work Area has designated Wesley
Foundation as our August Mission Project.
Wesley Foundation at Eastern Illinois University is a campus ministry primarily supported by the
Illinois Great Rivers Conference, and it receives $2,500 annually from the Wesley UMC Missions
Budget. Wesley Foundation encourages college students to deepen their faith and relationship with
God, through Jesus Christ, and thereby become future leaders for the church.
As the needs of campus ministry have grown, so has the need for additional funds. During the school
year, Wesley Foundation sponsors weekly Bible studies, a Christianity 101 program, a dedicated
freshmen group, week-long prayer vigils once a semester, a 24-hour prayer vigil each month,
monthly service projects, worship on Wednesday nights and a free, hot meal for students on Sunday
nights. In March 2015, Wesley Foundation added a Food Pantry to its campus outreach, and this fall,
it will host a Disciple Study.
If you would like to help support the work Wesley Foundation does at EIU, please make your check
out to Wesley UMC with Wesley Foundation on the memo line or visit our website at
charlestonwesley.org and click on the $ button at the bottom of the page. If you prefer to make a cash
donation, there are blue mission offering envelopes in the pew backs. Thank you very much for your
support.

Have you ever experienced the joy of receiving
a present on a special day? Maybe your family
or friends told you to cover your eyes and walk
to another room, keeping your eyes closed. Once
in the room, the surprise was revealed.
When I was stationed in Camp Lejeune, NC,
I decided to come home to surprise my mom
for a special occasion. I hid in a large box in
front of the garage doors. Dad and Laura led
mom out to the driveway where she saw the
box. Undoubtedly, mom’s mind began to race
with possibilities as to what was inside. Still,
mom had no idea what (or more specifically,
who) was in the box. When I jumped out and
yelled surprise, I'm pretty sure it took a little
time to regain her composure - but despite her
shock from the ordeal, the “cat was out of the
bag.” The mystery was over. The secret was
revealed.
In God’s economy, this phenomenon is called
revelation. God revealed God’s plan to Moses
through a burning bush. The plan of God was
revealed to the Israelites through the
prophets. The handiwork of God is revealed
throughout creation. Jesus revealed the
fullness of God through his words, actions, and
ultimately his life. In each of these cases, God’s
love and design for humanity is revealed to
humanity. That which was hidden, became
visible. Revelation!
The question is, "When was the last time God
revealed something to you?" Some truth of
God revealed through Scripture? An attribute
of God revealed through creation? Another
question is, “Does God still speak?” The
answer to that question is the basis for our next
series for August.
I hope you will join us for each of the Sundays
in August. On August 2, Paige Roberts will be
speaking. Then beginning August 9, we’ll start
our four-part series titled “The Big Reveal.” If
you’ve had questions about whether God still
communicates with us, I hope you’ll plan on
attending each of the Sundays in August. Be
sure to invite and bring a friend, too!
August 9 - What Nature Tells
August 16 - When Scripture Speaks
August 23 - The Necessity of the Spirit
August 30 - Show & Tell
Looking forward to hearing something new in
August!

Wesley’s Boy Scout Troop 141 has had a busy
summer. Two Scouts attended National Youth
Leadership Training in the Missouri Ozarks,
and 27 boys accompanied by six adults enjoyed
a week of camp at Rhodes-France Scout
Reservation near Pana.
For July 4 festivities, our Scouts had a float in
the parade, posted flags on Lincoln, and
provided Color Guards for the Community
Band concert and at the Viet Nam Wall. At
their July 13 meeting the Scouts retired over 50
American flags. Scouts continued their
monthly service project of preparing and
serving a meal at the PADS shelter.
This past weekend 13 Scouts and four adults
spent two nights in Chicago on board the
Training Vessel Manatra, which got underway
on Saturday. Each Scout helped in the galley,
toured the engine room, served as helmsman
and lookout, and went over the side in an
abandon ship drill. The Scouts also visited
Navy Pier, and toured the Museum of the First
Army Division at Cantigny Park in Wheaton.
Troop 141 is sponsoring a blood drive on
Saturday, August 1, 10 to 2:30 at Moriarty Hall
at the Catholic Church. Eat first and just show
up, or to reserve a time call 367-2202 or register
online at www.bloodcenterimpact.org (Group
code 70826).
