A Quick Glimpse into some Social/Digital Dimensions

Introduction I was only able to attend the 2013 SHRM Conference

briefly, and unfortunately I didn’t get to see as much as I wanted to, both because of time constraints and the fact that I was busy chatting with folks. Even at an event that huge, I kept running into people I knew – and who knew each other! It was quite a reunion.

Fortunately, I was able to grab some images that demonstrate how SHRM, as well as solutions providers and attendees, have not only embraced social and digital technologies, but have also integrated them with more “old school” communication and collaboration methods.

Here are the images, along with my observations and reflections…

Welcome Attendees

• The now-requisite(?) social/digital engagement banner…

• A few things are conspicuous in their absence, at least for me: Google+, YouTube and a QR Code. It will be interesting to see what the banner looks like next year.

• I can’t speak for most of the platforms, but the Twitterverse in particular was crazy-active with tweets! At one point the #SHRM13 hashtag was even trending nationally.

New School, Meet Old School

Another great way to facilitate connections and dialogue…

Sometimes Old School is All You Need

This is Social Media too!

Even in the Digital Era, you can’t beat a good old-fashioned card, especially when it’s ginormous! Happy birthday, SHRM!!!

At Your (Social Media) Service

This was a very clever idea. Knowing that people are still climbing their social media learning curves, smartbars were located in The Hive, just outside the Expo Hall. SHRM described the smartbars this way:

Our team of experts is here to answer your questions on a range of topics related to social media including: Social Media 101,

Social Recruiting, Twitter 101, LinkedIn strategy, social media policy and more.

Stop by the HIVE to get your social media questions answered today.

Engaging on Multiple Levels

The Hive also included a steady stream of informal Q&A and interview sessions, many of which also addressed social media. Here Stacy Zapar and I offer individual (her) and organizational (me) perspectives in a Social Media 101 Q&A session. In addition to great in-person interaction, there was also a lot of cyber engagement. For example:• Johnny Campbell took the photo and posted it

on Twitter (@socialtalent)• Jim Stroud asked a question about LinkedIn

account “ownership,” recorded our responses, and posted them on SoundCloud (to access the recording visit the Denovati Talks page: http://denovati.com/denovati-talks)

Social Facilitation

Another clever idea at The Hive: This is basically a tablet mounted on a stand that allows folks to search for restaurants via Yelp (and maybe other services). Yes, people could use their own mobile devices, but this makes it a lot easier for pairs and groups to coordinate their after-hours socializing.

Digital Solutions I

After my Hive session, I walked through the Expo Hall to see how solutions providers are integrating social and digital technologies in their offerings. I only visited a small number of booths, but I was intrigued by what I saw, including this cool benefits communication application from Jellyvision labs (The Interactive Conversation Company). I love how they’re repping Chicago!

Digital Solutions II

We all know how much people love visualizations. Though not everyone may agree, I think there’s great potential value in converting one’s career activities and accomplishments from text-only to a mix of text and graphics. The Career Portfolio from Beyond.com enables individuals to do just that. Time will tell if employers agree.

Instructions Required?

When you want people to engage, it helps to be clear about what engagement looks like. Apparently people weren’t sure what “Tell Us How You Are More” meant, so what was intended to be a crowdsourcing effort (I think) became a wall of self-expression.

Following their lead, I added my own graffiti to the whiteboard. How could I not?!?!

Conclusion I wish I had been able to visit more booths.

Next year I will definitely need to allocate more time to the Expo Hall.

I’m looking forward to seeing what 2013 HR Tech and SHRM 2014 have to offer!
