We can beconfident that our

God holds usand so we willnot be utterly

cast down evenwhen we fall. Our

trials are not forour destructon,

those are tests ofour faith. Goddelights in oursteps of faith.

“I

Jesus told His disciples: “Let us go acrossto the other side”. Thus a boat journey began tothe other side of the Sea of Galilee, a journeyinitiated by the Lord Jesus Himself. Asfishermen, the disciples were quite familiar withthat body of water. They would have been quitenaturally confident of guiding the boat to theother shore even if they had to face reasonablystrong winds and waves because suchsituations would have been regular occurencesin their fishing expeditions before. The journeystarted very well. The lake was so calm thatJesus decided to go to sleep. But soon theunexpected happened - a storm far beyond theircontrol! The wind rushing down across themountains whipping up the waves and causingthem to come crashing into the boat. The waterrushed in faster than they could bail it out.Nothing could be more terrifying than to be on asinkig boat in the darkness of the night.

We may well ask, could not Jesus foreseesuch a situation and refrain from starting thejourney to the other side of the lake? The answerto that question can very well be guessed fromwhat Jesus did to solve the problem: He rebukedthe wind - not the terrified disciples - and calmedthe sea. Only He questioned their faith. Heallowed the disciples to encounter such adesperate siuation to build up their faith and tellthem that if they embark on a journey at Hiscommand, He will take care of them all the way.He cares just as much when the tempest israging as when the seas are calm and the sunis shining. A writer says: “Where there are nostorms, there is no danger. Where there is no

"Peace, Be still":A command to a turbulent sea!

"He said to them, “Let us cross over to the other side”. ------ And agreat windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that itwas already filling. ----- Then He arose and rebuked the wind, andsaid to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and therewas a great calm. But He said to them, “Why are you so fearful?

How is it that you have no faith?”" (Mark 4:35-41)

danger, there is no fear. Where there is no fear, there is no testing. Where there is no testing, there is no learning. Where there is no learning, there is no growing. Where there is no growing, there is no faith. No storms, no faith. Fewstorms, a little faith. Many storms, much faith. No Shortcuts”.

At the beinning of this new year, all of uswonder what the new year will bring. What willhappen in 2020? Will it be a good year or a badyear for us personally? In some ways, it will bebusiness as usual. But the unexpectedsituations could arise at totally unexpectedtimes. But if you are travelling with Jesus, Hewill arise and command: “Peace, Be still”! Thefierce wind will stop and the waves will subside!

Let me quote the words of King David: "Thesteps of a good man are ordered by the LORD,and He delights in his way. Though he fall, heshall not be utterly cast down; For the LORDupholds him with His hand” (Psalm 37:23-24).We can be confident that our God holds usand so we will not be utterly cast down evenwhen we fall. Our trials are not for ourdestructon, those are tests of our faith. Goddelights in our steps of faith. Spurgeon puts itvery nicely, “As parents are pleased with thetottering footsteps of their babes, all thatconcerns a saint is interesting to his heavenlyFather. God loves to view the holy strivings of asoul pressing forward to the skies”. Goodparents know that falling is a necessary part oflearning how to walk. If you never fall, you’llnever learn how to walk. Let us take our stepsin the new year with the Lord on our side!

We, in the Suvartha Magazine Family, wish all our readers a very happy and victorious journey

with the Lord in the New Year 2020!

1. Introduction

The human race is living in a time ofunprecedented occurrences. World populationis climbing very steeply and it is getting out ofcontrol. All the world leaders are worried aboutthe availability of enough food for the entirepopulation in the world. Conflicts betweennations are more global today. People are afraidthat someone will trigger a nuclear war byaccident or due to some insane and irrationalmotivation. Social problems like crimes andviolenceare rising without any control. Newdeadly diseases that resist today’s all knowndrugs and therapies are increasing every day.Medical science has brought wonder drugs toalleviate human suffering, but the mortality rateis increasing day by day. In spite of all theseproblems, people with opposing beliefs andconflicting cultural values are crowded togetheron a shrinking planet. Can we live next to eachother? Will the end of the world begin with acascading power failure that cannot be reversed? What about a killer asteroid from space? Howcan we find peace in the world?

There is only one solution to all theseconcerns. That solution is found in the secondpetition of the prayer that Jesus Christ taughtHis disciples: “Thy kingdom come". Thisrealisation prompts us to think, discuss andconsider kingdom of God very seriously becausekingdom of God is a profound concept in theBible and the Jewish thought.

2. Old Testament (OT) Understanding

The theme kingdom of God is not explicit inthe OT passages. However, the belief about thefuture reign of God was part of the eschatologicalhope of the Israelites in the OT, especially intheir prophetic visions. This hope is combinedwith the messianic expectations of the time whenthe future messianic successor of David willexercise royal authority over the redeemedpeople of God and His universal kingship willbe recognized by all. In the book of Danielchapter seven the eternal kingdom is the

pinnacle and verse 14 says that “His Kingdomis one that will never be destroyed”. Thus forthe OT writers God’s malkuth (Kingdom) isGod’s universal reign and His sovereignty overall the earth.

3. New Testament (NT) Understanding

In the NT, the Greek word basileia refers tothe “kingdom”. The term kingdom of God is usedliterally in Greek as basileiatoutheou, which isfound in NT texts especially Mark, Luke, andActs. The variant preferred by Matthew, “thekingdom of heaven” or literally, “the kingdom ofheavens” (Gk.basileiatououranon) correspondsto Hebrew malkuth. In the Bible, these are notgeographical terms and do not speak of aterritory governed by a king. They stand primarilyfor the sovereignty, authority, and the power ofGod. As John the Baptist started his ministry,he expected an imminent intervention of God inthe world. For John, when God intervenes Hewould transform the world and God’s kingdomwould finally be established. Therefore, throughthe speeches, John was preparing the peoplefor the imminent appearance of God andemphasized that His presence will be avengingwith force and violence. In fact, this was thetypical Jewish thought of the day and it wasvery strong and persistent from Daniel to Johnthe Baptist.

4. Jesus’ Understanding

Jesus had a paradigm shift from the Jewishthought and the message John preached. WhileJews believed and John preached that Godwould intervene and clean up the world in orderto establish God’s kingdom, Jesus believed thatGod will work in a different way. In fact, Jesuslived under the kingdom of Rome. When Jesuswas teaching His disciples to pray, He askedthem to pray for God’s kingdom to come. Bypraying this Jesus is setting one kingdomagainst another – the kingdom of God againstthe kingdom of Rome.

The ministry of Jesus begins with the

"Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven"(Matthew 6:10)

As John theBaptist startedhis ministry, heexpected animminentintervention ofGod in the world. In fact, this wasthe typicalJewish thoughtof the day and itwas very strongand persistentfrom Daniel toJohn the Baptist.

announcement that “The time is fulfilled, andthe kingdom of God has come near, repent andbelieve in the good news” (Matt. 4:17). In suchpassages the gospel writers consistentlysummarize the ministry of Jesus in terms ofthe kingdom of God. In other places it is writtenthat “Then Jesus went about all the cities andvillages, teaching in their synagogues andproclaiming the good news of the Kingdom andcuring every disease and every sickness” (Matt.4:23).Though Jesus never defined the kingdom,He convincingly demonstrated its power andillustrated it variously, especially throughparables and sayings.

When Jesus sent out first the twelve (Matt.10:7) and then the seventy two (Luke 10:9), theonly specific instruction given in both instanceswas “As you go, preach this message, ‘TheKingdom of heaven is near’.” It was always onthe lips of Jesus and predominant in Histeachings. Although there were differences inthe perception of the kingdom, thecontemporaries of Jesus were in a mood of eagerexpectancy, longing for deliverance from theRoman yoke. In those days, they were politicallyoppressed and religiously dissatisfied. Hencethey hoped that the divine intervention wouldoccur at any time. Pious Jews at the time ofJesus were waiting for the kingdom of God tocome (Mark 15:43), but what gave rise to thishope?

The first chapters of Genesis state that God’splan from the beginning has been to establishHis kingdom on earth. Tragically, when the firstman and woman failed in their mission, Satanbecame an usurper and established a reign ofsin on the earth. However, God did not abandonHis original plan. The remainder of Scripture isthe history of God’s restoring work that whichhad been corrupted by sin. It is the historyof redemption. So when Jesus teaches Hisdisciples to pray, “Your kingdom come, yourwill be done, on earth as it is in heaven”, thereis a lot of OT background to this concept. Inshort, the kingdom of God was something theJews were expecting. During the time of Jesus,Jews even concluded their synagogue serviceswith a prayer (the Kaddish) that is strikinglysimilar to this section of the Lord’s Prayer.Interestingly, the Jews could not understand thefulfilment of God’s promise through Jesusbecause Jesus revealed into history as theeschatological messiah, inaugurating thekingdom of God through His passion, death,

and resurrection. The teaching of Jesus Christ about the

kingdom of God is centred around theresponsibility of human participation in usheringit. Jesus’ understanding was that God is notgoing to have a dramatic intervention using forceor violence, rather God is looking to work withthe human beings in collaboration. God will nothave a winnowing fork or an axe in his hand. The kingdom of God is already present. That’swhy Jesus said, “The kingdom of God is notcoming with things that can be observed, norwill they say, ‘Look, here it is!’ or “There it is!’for, in fact, the kingdom is among you” (Luke17:20-21). This sounded crazy to Jesus’ firstfollowers, because they were waiting for achange in the society and politics of the day.But Jesus was emphatic about the humancollaboration in establishing the kingdom of Godon the earth. For Jesus, God’s kingdom is here, but only insofar as you accept it, enter it, live it,and thereby establish it.That means “Yourkingdom come” is not about the intervention ofGod, but about participation with God. Therefore,Jesus did not stay in the desert waiting for Godto intervene rather he travelled from village tovillage bringing good news to the poor and tothose suffering from injustice. Jesus evendescribed His ministry in this line as seen inthe gospel of Luke 4:18-19.

5. The Task of the Church

It is very interesting to note that if God iswaiting for human collaboration to establish Hiskingdom on this earth, the church has a vitalrole to play as the body of Christ in this world. What are the ways by which the church cancollaborate with God in the building of Hiskingdom on this earth?

First of all, Church is sent to proclaim thekingdom of God and to bear the presence ofthe kingdom in the world. Hence, the Churchshould involve in the community developmentand address the issues of social justice. In theNazareth Manifesto, Jesus focused on theholistic development of the humanity and theirliberation. That is exactly what the task of thechurch today. Church should reach out to theneeds of the poor and afflicted irrespective ofcaste, colour, and nationality. Here the role ofthe church is to become a catalyst fortransformation in order to initiate the processof development among the weaker sections of

God’s plan fromthe beginning

has been toestablish Hiskingdom on

earth. Tragically,when the first

man and womanfailed in their

mission, Satanbecame an

usurper andestablished a

reign of sin onthe earth.

However, Goddid not abandonHis original plan.

The remainderof Scripture isthe history of

God’s restoringwork that which

had beencorrupted by sin.

It is the historyof redemption.

the society. The end result will be the creationof new social relationships and a new humanityin the world.

Secondly, church should function as analternative community with a new order ofrelationships in the world. The values of suchan alternative community should be freedom, fellowship, and justice. They are the kingdomvalues also. Therefore, the church has theresponsibility to keep a fellowship among thepeople based on the kingdom values as taughtby Jesus Christ. That means, there should belove, sacrifice, and freedom from oppression inthe church. Moreover , there should bereconciliation and harmony in the churchbecause Jesus rejected any customs thatmarginalized people. The basis of the entiremission of Jesus was love and that should beseen in the church as an alternative community. In fact, it is a challenge to the present churchto examine and represent itself as an alternativecommunity envisaged by Jesus Christ.

Thirdly, church has to proclaim solidaritywith the struggling human beings in the world.Today human beings are deprived of their basicrights to appropriate nourishment, clothing andhousing, right to live and to have a humanenvironment in which they can grow and developas persons. In His inaugural speech, Jesusproclaimed that “The Spirit of the Lord is uponme…” in order to address the issues of thehuman communities. The church has to followthe same pattern of Jesus Christ by proclaimingits solidarity with the marginalised. If the churchdoes not speak up, who is going to speak up?Therefore the church should proclaim “yes” tothat which conforms to the kingdom of God asrevealed to humankind in the life of Jesus Christ, and say “no” to that which distorts the dignityand the freedom of humankind. In order to dothis, the church should change its attitudes andlife-style to serve humankind with the mind ofJesus Christ.

Fourthly, the church must be an inclusivecommunity stretching to include everyoneirrespective of their sex, race, and colour. Todaypeople live with hatred, fear, and rejectioneverywhere. There is neither care, fulfillingrelationships nor environments where people arereconciled and liberated to become what Godwants them to be. Therefore, church must stepin to show to the world that we care and respectrelationships of every single human being in theworld. When that takes place in the church,

the church automatically becomes a healingcommunity.

Finally, the church must be a witnessingcommunity. Jesus witnessed to the kingdomof God through His sufferings. There is nowitness to the kingdom without the cross andresurrection because the kingdom of God isfully revealed through the passion of JesusChrist. As the body of Jesus Christ, the churchis part of this revealed kingdom and the agentof God’s action in the world on behalf of thehumankind. In fact, this leads the church intokoinonia (fellowship) with everyone in the world. The koinonia of the church is nothing less thanthe most literal partaking in the sufferings ofChrist in order to unlock the kingdom for othersto enter in. It is actually witnessing to thekingdom in the world. We should make surethat the pattern of the church’s witnessingshould be not as members of a particular sect, but as parents, neighbours, workers, citizensand so on. Moreover, the witnessingshould be done in the power of the Holy Spiritbecause there are chances to fail to stand inthe society as a witnessing community in thepattern of the kingdom values. But when thewitnessing is done in the power of the Holy Spirit, the church can make provisions to the entirehumankind to enjoy all the blessings of therevealed kingdom. That is the reign of God underwhom the whole creatures find their perfectionand completeness.

6. Conclusion

Kingdom of God is, if not confused, aprofound theme in the Bible. When faced withdehumanizing forces in His time, Jesus realizedthat the advent of the kingdom is the onlysolution and asked His disciples to pray that‘Thy kingdom come’. As the human race isfacing countless problems today, we shouldpray the same prayer for the appearance ofGod’s kingdom in its full sense. In other words, the prayer ‘Thy kingdom come’ may risecontinually from every lip as we enter intoanother new year. But that is not enoughbecause God is waiting for the humancollaboration to usher it. Therefore, it is theresponsibility of the church to step in so thatthere will be new social relationships and ordersbased on the kingdom values. This New Yearmay help us to do the same with urgency andseriousness!

Witnessingshould be donein the power ofthe Holy Spiritbecause thereare chances tofail to stand inthe society as awitnessingcommunity inthe pattern of thekingdom values. Then the churchcan makeprovisions to theentirehumankind toenjoy all theblessings of therevealedkingdom. That isthe reign of Godunder whom thewhole creaturesfind theirperfection andcompleteness.

"Consider her destiny" can be alsotranslated as: “Consider her future”. The firstpart of the verse goes like this, “She took nothought of her future” (ESV). This is really asad and miserable hash-tag given by theprophet Jeremiah about the condition of Israel, the 'Chosen Community'. This tragic story ofJewish citizenry has a relevant message fortoday’s God’s people, the Church because theOT history is a ground to learn many relevantlessons. We need to concentrate our eyes andhearts to various signals of Israel's past history.

The context: The book

of Lamentation is portrayingthe miserable condition of theJewish people. The book isa poetry in its genre, set inthe scenario of thedestruction of king’s city -Jerusalem and the fall of herprestige - the Temple. Theterrible invasions of powerfulBabylonians made theprophet Jeremiah to make alament over the city, byseeing her empty homesand streets (1:1,4). He hadnot only seen the physicalcondition of the city, but thesin, transgression, filthinessand other related profanity. The enemies made themnaked and they becameabominable before theirRedeemer, the Holy One of Israel (1:5-9). (Thereare many things to explain, however, it is notbeing done due to time and space constraints). In answer to the question, why such eventshave happened, the writer gives an inscription, and “She did not remember her future or destiny”(Author’s paraphrase). She never took the timeto think about the better future, but ratherindulged in the present fortunes and prosperity. She joined with heathen culture and embracedall sorts of pagan cultic activities. In short, shelost her IDENTITY as God’s people and

deliberately and shamelessly mingled with themby violating all the boundaries. They supposedthat Jehovah would not destroy their city, sinceit is His chosen land and having splendidtemple. This utopian thinking made them tolead a lethargic spiritual life. The materialblessings they enjoyed also kept them far fromGod. Most of the Minor Prophets, especiallyHosea, Joel and Amos, criticized the peoplefor their spiritual, moral and social deteriorationsand their evil attitude. Those prophets ministeredin the nation even before the time of Jeremiah.

They had given a number ofwarnings from time to timebut the people deliberatelyignored them and tried toexpel the messengers ofYahweh. And the finalprophet of the era wasJeremiah before theBabylonian Captivity, butIsrael did the same to him. Many of their gatheringsbecame meaningless andthe Lord expressed Hisdesperations on their socalled spiritual activities. These festivals and theirgathering were countedabhorrence to Him. In short, they lived only for theirpresent comfort andprosperity.

Churches Today: Whilewe look into the present scenario of the churchas a whole, we definitely can find certain similaraspects today. The churches are more or lessinvolved in the matters of the world than thespiritual. We can see spiritual and moraldegradation clearly everywhere. In theprophetical view of the book of Revelation, weare now going through the Laodicean period. The feeling of plenteous wealth, selfish claimsand lack of self - knowledge are the marks ofthis church and the most tragic andheartbreaking truth is that Christ is not among

"Jerusalem has sinned gravely, Therefore she has become vile. All who honored herdespise her, ----- She did not consider her destiny" (Lamentations 1:8,9 - NKJV))

The material blessings they(Israel) enjoyed also kept

them far from God. Most ofthe Minor Prophets, especially

Hosea, Joel and Amos, criticized the people for their

spiritual, moral and socialdeteriorations and their evilattitude. Those prophets

ministered in the nation evenbefore the time of Jeremiah. They had given a number ofwarnings from time to timebut the people deliberatelyignored them and tried to

expel the messengersof Yahweh.

In the propheticalview of the book

of Revelation,we are now

going throughthe Laodicean

period. Thefeeling of

plenteouswealth, selfish

knowledge arethe marks of this

church and themost tragic and

heartbreakingtruth is that

Christ is notamong them.

them. It seems that it is not counted as a bigmatter of importance. Their sole purpose incoming together is to complete an agenda.

Perhaps it is not an exaggeration to statethat our churches are having the same attitudeas it was among the people of Israel. Churcheshave become centers of agendas, projects, business etc. Spiritual activities are being donefor name sake. The sincere involvement andhonest dealings are missing. To some, thechurch is just a social institution. To others, itis an address. Love, commitment, mutualrespect and integrity have become the missinglink. Selfish motives, brokenrelations, divisions, desire tobecome first, offensivewords, lying spirit, customary involvement, greed, etc are not unfamiliarin churches now. We tooare in the same attitude andmotion as the Jewsdescribed by Jeremah.Doubtless, the history ofGod’s own people, Israel isa typical example and acaution to the churches now. However, many are notthinking about the futureseriously!

Most of us are justlooking for the presentadvantages, temporalbenefits and luxurious livingand running for makingmoney, positions and peoples’ respect andapplause. The question is, but how far? Weforget what is ought not to be forgotten and runtowards reaching the height of our own plansrather than finish the race set by the Lord. Theexcellency of the knowledge of Christ issidelined and we have installed many othersecondary things in its place. The things whichwe put behind in the past are once again takenback and kept alive in the front. In fact our priority

is diverted to other things away from God’sKingdom. The holy items are removed and theirplace is filled with other human matters asEliashib and Tobiah did in the temple (Nehemiah13:4-9).

We need to live a life in the world in the lightof Eternity. There is a glorious future for thesaints. The pleasures of this world should notdeceive us. The dormant state of our spiritualmind will put us in trouble. A spiritualdiscernment is the need of the hour; otherwisewe too will become identical to the Jews of thedays of Jeremiah and obviously the church of

Laodicea. Our sight must beset on Eternity. A bleak andblurred view of this futureplan of God will bring out allsorts of worldly thoughts intoour hearts.

Therefore consider ourDestiny seriously andcarefully. St. Paul rightlyexhorts us in his epistle toPhilippians, “Finally bro-thers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever ispure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable,if there is any excellence, ifthere is anything worthy ofpraise, think about thesethings” (Philippians 4:8ESV). We have come to atime which is so terrible and

also very much crucial and significant. Almostwe are at the last hours of the end time. Ourdestination is so clear and remarkably near! Wemust leave away many of the things countedvaluable in the view of this world - but in factabominable to God. It is high time to hold on tothe noble things mentioned above by St. Paul.May the Holy Spirit help us to look for the daysahead, the glorious future.

MARANATHA!

We too are inthe sameattitude andmotion as theJews describedby Jeremah.Doubtless, thehistory of God’sown people,Israel is a typicalexample and acaution to thechurches now. However, manyare not thinkingabout the futureseriously!

We need to live a life inthe world in the light of

God had a purpose in creation as well as inthe new-creation of the visible world; which washabitation. Adam was commissioned to - befruitful, multiply, fill the earth, subdue it, anddominate that which moves about in the 3valuable natural resources of air, water, and land.Fulfilling God-given responsibilities involvedwork, which needed energy that comes throughfood, concerning which, God gave clearinstructions to Adam. Delimiters were providedso that the choices of what can and cannot bepartaken don’t get blurred in the midst of thework actively done to fulfill the responsibilities.Adam allowed God to communicate to him. Thetree with the forbidden fruitwas already in thegarden; and God revealedwhat the eating of the fruitcan accomplish.Revelation pulls thecurtain back to show notonly what is existing, butalso, what is on the anvil. Adam failed miserablyto comply with what was revealed.

The Lord God has a purpose in our creationand our new creation as well! Purpose beginswith us becoming a habitation for the Presenceof God through His Spirit. Purpose is fulfilledthrough His abiding Presence in us bringing tofruition all that He has planned through our lives.Just as Adam had a divine mandate, we whoare in Christ are also mandated to - being fruitfulin the Holy Spirit (Gal. 5:22-23), to bring aboutan increase in number of souls (Rom. 1:16), tofill the earth with the knowledge of God asrevealed through the Last Adam (Jesus Christ),to subdue the desires of this world that fightagainst the soul (1 Peter 2:11) and dominatethe powers of darkness in the Name of JesusChrist (Eph. 6:12)! The divine mandate upon uscan be fulfilled if we allow God to communicateto us, as well as obey God in what is/wasrevealed.

It is said that all what is recorded in theGospels will give account to only 52 days ofJesus’ public ministry on earth. Our Lord Jesus

Finish strong!"Now it came to pass, when the time had come for Him to be received up, that He steadfastlyset His face to go to Jerusalem, and sent messengers before His face. And as they went, theyentered a village of the Samaritans, to prepare for Him. But they did not receive Him, because

His face was set for the journey to Jerusalem" (Luke 9:51-53)

Christ was aware of the time given to Him to beon earth. He not only was wise to number Hisdays to fulfill His mission, but also knew howto set Himself up to complete His life’s purpose!Productivity in life and completion of tasks wasparamount to Christ our Lord; He being thesame One who first created all things and thenrested (Hebrews 1:2). He was in constantcommunication with the Father, and lived inagreement with the Father and the Spirit. SinceLord Jesus was in constant communion withthe others in the Trinity, He could live out themandate that was given to the first Adam.

Jesus knew where He was going in thisjourney that Lukerecords in Chapter 9;His focus was to bein Jerusalem. Focuswill diminish the lesssignificant; includingthe fact that there willbe those along the

way who might not receive us. Acceptance bya few and rejection by many was not the matterof concern for Jesus, and should neither be forthose who are living out their life’s purpose. Thefruit trees to be accepted were many in theGarden of Eden; but the tree and the fruit to berejected was only one. Adam accepted the onlyONE to be rejected. In sharp contrast, Jesusaccepted the mandate that no one else did orcould; He accepted the cross and the shame; He accepted humility and death. He acceptedwhat we can never comprehend – coming downfrom heaven to earth to suffer and die for us andthen to be raised up.

When we accept Jesus Christ as our Saviorand Lord, we are signing up for accepting onlythat which is permissible by God; and rejectingthose which God does not agree upon. Let ustreasure His Presence to live as Jesus lived;mindful of the time; focused on fulfilling God’spurpose for us; rejecting those that Godinstructed us to reject, so that we can finishstrong in the race set before us just as Jesusfinished it!

Role of the CHURCH in

Spreading the GOSPEL

In the abovepassage, ApostlePaul iscommending thechurch inThessalonica fortheir exemplaryliving and effectivewitness, as theyconveyed the gospelmost effectively byexample and alsoby word-of-mouth.In a way , thebelievers in church of Thessalonica werepracticing ‘show-and-tell’. They were ‘showing’to their unbelieving world of their extraordinaryfaith in Christ, and also sharing the living gospelthrough words. Thus, the Thessaloniansbecame model Christians and they are goodexample for us to emulate.

The gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ is God’sgreat plan for bringing people into a livingrelationship withHim. It is soberingto think that peopleare supposed to beable to see Christin us. We shouldbe able to say withPaul, “Imitate me,just as I also imitate Christ” (1 Cor. 11:1). Weare intended to be channels of our blessings toothers who do not know Christ. God shines inour hearts so that the light might shine out toothers (2 Cor. 4:6). As we focus on Jesus, wewill reflect His image to others (2 Cor. 3:18).

Sharing our faith is a combination ofspontaneous conversation about God andpremeditated ideas about the gospel. Thefollowing is a set of practical steps (Courtesy:

“For our gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Spiritand in much assurance, as you know what kind of men we were among you for your sake.

And you became followers of us and of the Lord, having received the word in muchaffliction, with joy of the Holy Spirit, so that you became examples to all in Macedonia and

Achaia who believe. For from you the word of the Lord has sounded forth, not only inMacedonia and Achaia, but also in every place. Your faith toward God has gone out, so that

we do not need to say anything.” (1 Thessalonians 1:5-8)

The Open Bible) totake in witnessing forChrist:

* Regularly talkabout God. Sprinkleyour ordinaryconversation witho c c a s i o n a lreferences to God’sactivity in your life. Itis much easier toshare your faithwhen your friendsknow God is an

integral part of your affairs.* Prepare your testimony. Learn to describe

your pre-Christian life, your encounter withChrist, and subsequent changes in your life infewer than five minutes. If you became aChristian as a child, focus on the impact Christhas had on your adult life.

* Learn a brief summary of the gospel. It willbe good to learn a condensed version of the

gospel, forexample: FourSpiritual Laws( h t t p : / /w w w . c a m p u sc r u s a d e . c o m /four_laws_online.htm), Roman

Road of Salvation (http://www.new-testament-christian.com/roman-road-to-salvation.html),etc.)

For I am not ashamed of the gospel ofChrist, for it is the power of God to salvation foreveryone who believes, for the Jew first andalso for the Greek. For in it the righteousnessof God is revealed from faith to faith; as it iswritten, “The just shall live by faith”(Romans 1:16-17)

God shines in our hearts so that thelight might shine out to others (2 Cor.4:6). As we focus on Jesus, we will

reflect His image to others (2 Cor. 3:18).

Mary sat at the feet of Jesus andwe always admired Mary for her loveshe demonstrated to listen to God’sword. But Martha, her sister, is verydifferent and we do not see Marthashowing any desire to meditate onGod’s word. Studying Martha’s lifehelped me to have a different outlookiabout her. In Luke 10:38 to 42 we cannotice a few qualities of Martha:

1. She had the gift of serving:We see Martha taking the bold

decision to invite Jesus and Hisdisciples. Inviting Jesus to her housewas not an easy task as Jesus wasfollowed by twelve disciples and a hugecrowd. Martha’s hospitality wascommendable as she was willing tooffer her heart and home to Jesus.Martha took up this brave task ofinviting a crowd of people, offering themshelter and food which depicts her lovefor Jesus and her heart of giving. Shewas gifted with serving. Serving is agift of God (1 Cor. 12:5,28), so Marthawas right in using her gift for God’sglory.

2. She looked up to Jesus forsolutions to problems:

Luke says that Martha complainedto Jesus about Mary. Martha wasoverwhelmed by the amount of workshe had to do to offer food to this largenumber of people. She was strugglingto get things done and when shenoticed Mary was not helping, she feltfrustrated. But I admire the way Marthahandled the situation. Martha told herproblems to Jesus rather thanconfronting Mary. Many times in ourlives we have conflicts with our brothersand sisters. But rather than confrontingthem it is always good to tell God

Mary's right choiceand Martha's hard work!

about it and He will direct us. Marthawas right to approach Jesus with allher problems.

So we see Martha was good andright in what she had done. Then, whydid Jesus say Mary had chosen whatwas better? What was it that Marthadid wrong?

In Luke 10:41,42, we see thatJesus was not admonishing her butwas trying to calm her down. Jesusunderstood that Martha was underhuge stress and pressure also Marthafelt overwhelmed with the amount ofwork she had to do. Jesus was tryingto tell Martha a few things:

1. Martha was forgetting that Jesushad fed five thousand with five loavesand two fishes and turned water intowine. So whatever little Martha coulddo was good enough when Jesus waspresent. Even if the food she made wasnot tasty or turned out to be too littleto satisfy the crowd, the Lord was thereand could work miracles.

2. Martha was getting anxious atthe same time because she relied onher own strength rather than God. Sheassumed she could please God with

her abilities and talents. She trustedin her own abilities rather than askingGod's help.

3. Jesus said “Martha, Martha, youare anxious and troubled about manythings, but one thing is necessary.Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her”.Jesus mentioned that at that particulartime, only one thing was needed thatwas listening to God’s word. Marthaat that particular time was not doingthe will of God even though she wasserving God with all her gifts andtalents. Martha was putting her heartand soul into serving Jesus. But Jesus'will for Martha was different to whatMartha was doing at that time.

Dear friends, sometimes we are likeMartha as we try to do many thingsfor Christ with our own strength andtalents thinking this will please Godand also help in the extension of God’skingdom. But God wants us to rely onHim with all our strength and wait onHim. We must ask God’s will and waiton God for His strength before we doanything. We sometimes stressourselves working for God but we donot take time to be with God. God wantsus to spent time with Him and gainstrength and advice from Him.Sometimes we are so busy doingthings for God that we forget to spendtime with God and this is not what Godwants from us. We should be everready to work for God but at the sametime we must find time in God’spresence to pray and seek God’sguidance to sharpen our skills andtalents. Let’s consider our ways andsee if we are utilizing our time wiselywhile we are working for God.

And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled aboutmany things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not

be taken away from her” (Luke 10:41,42)

Evg. Bonnke who transformed the continent of Africa by his gospel outreachcampaigns went to be with the Lord on December 7, 2019. The son of a pastor,Reinhard gave his life to the Lord at age nine. After attending Bible College in Walesand his ordination in Germany he pastored a church and then went on to startmissionary work in Africa. God gave him a vision of ‘the continent of Africa, beingwashed in the precious Blood of Jesus’. He began holding meetings in a tent thataccommodated just 800 people, but, as attendance steadily increased, larger andlarger tents had to be purchased, until finally , in 1984, he commissioned theconstruction of the world’s largest mobile structure - a tent capable of seating 34,000people! Soon, attendance exceeded the capacity of this huge structure and he beganopen-air Gospel Campaigns with an initial gathering of over 150,000 people perservice! Since then, he has conducted city-wide meetings across the continent withas many as 1.6 million people attending a single meeting in Lagos, Nigeria inNovember of 2000.

Bonnke founded the international ministry of ‘Christ for all Nations’ which currentlyhas offices in the United States, Brazil, Canada, Germany, Czech Republic, UnitedKingdom, Nigeria, South Africa, Singapore, Australia, and Hong Kong. The ministryhas recorded more than 77 million documented decisions for Jesus Christ. Hismeetings were always marked by the miracle-working power of God. Thousands ofhealings took place: cancers were cured, blind eyes were opened and broken mindswere restored. He made several visits to different cities of India.

Evangelist Reinhard Bonnke is survived by his wife, Anni, three children, Kai-Uwe, Gabriele, and Susanne and eight grandchildren.

Kanye West, now a Christian!

Kanye West is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, record producer, entrepreneur and fashion designer. Hismusic has spanned a broad range ofstyles, including hip hop, soul, pop, rockand gospel. In January 2019, West re-affirmed his Christian faith on Twitter.West said with respect to his past, "WhenI was trying to serve multiple gods - godof ego, god of money, god of pride, the

god of fame - it drove me crazy. I didn'teven know what it meant to be saved. Now I love Jesus Christ. I loveChristianity". Kanye released his newalbum, ‘Jesus Is King’ recently. Thealbum is loaded with praise songs andscripture references. He now wants onlyto make Christ-centric music. A pastorcommented: “He was rapping for theworld and cursing and doing Satan’swork – and now he's all for Jesus”.

More than 1,000 people accepted

Christ during aKanye West“ S u n d a yService”. A pastorwho attendedthe service said:“ T o n i g h t ,worship waslifted, the nameof Christ wasexalted, the Wordof God waspreached, amultitude prayed together, the Gospelwas clearly proclaimed and anopportunity to respond was given”.Kanye West says: “My only Mission is tospread the Gospel. I tried it my way, itwas not working out. Everything was inshambles. But now that I am in serviceto God, I just clear my head and wake upevery day and let God do the driving andjust use me as He may”.

As a famous singer, he can influencemany young people. Let us pray that theLord uses his talents to turn many indarkness to the marvellous light of theGospel in the new generation!

China demolishes amegachurch during worsip!

Communist authorities destroyed a3,000-seat megachurch located in theprovince of Anhui, using a large excavatorto tear apart the building as memberswatched helplessly, according to reports.Surprisingly, the congregation was partof China’s officially recognized networkof churches. China officially recognizestwo Christian bodies: the Self PatrioticMovement and the Chinese PatrioticCatholic Association. Churches within thetwo networks, though, don’t have thefreedom to worship as they choose. Inthe past, Communist officialshave edited sermons, forced the removal

of crosses and banned Sunday Schoolsfor children. The lack of religious freedomis one reason millions of Christians havegone underground to worship in illegalhouse churches.

But according to reports, the Churchis still growing at a fast pace!
