On Saturday, 17th September, MammaLina Italian Delicatessen in Buckhurst Hill, 176c Queens Road, concluded the summer and welcomed autumn in with one of their highly popular and successful Italian

Aperitivo events. Friends of MammaLina and guests were invited along to enjoy a drink or two and savour plenty of the Italian delicatessen and café’s delicious homemade Italian delicacies!

‘Smiles with Grace’ is a new charity formed by a teenager in remission from a brain tumour to help all sick young people; through project funding, research and education. The event took place Sat 3rd September, with 80 people taking part

in an 18km Charity Walk, from Grace Boxall’s home in Buckhurst Hill to Great Ormond Street Hospital; the journey Grace made for that initial emergency operation back in 2007 when she was just 10 years old. To date over £11,000 has been raised.

On Tuesday, 20th September at Theydon Bois Village Hall, Epping Forest Business Group (EFBG) opened it’s doors to local business people to fi nd out how easy it is to get new business. EFBG is a strong network of trade and professional people that meet weekly. The prime purpose is to generate qualifi ed business leads

for each other that are reliable and trustworthy referrals. Established for over three years, EFBG has developed trust and understanding of each of the businesses represented and its members. It meets every Thursday morning from 7.30am at the Queen Victoria pub in Theydon Bois where business gets done over breakfast.

It’s been 1 year since the winning team at Tikadi opened the doors of their Ongar salon, hard to believe but true, and it has been going from strength to strength, having enjoyed a fantastic year mingling with hairdressing stars and local celebrity! Salon Owner,

The inaugural end of season 20/20 cricket match between Harlow and Loughton-based Attwaters Solicitors and Loughton-based Haslers (Chartered Accountants) fi nished in victory for Haslers. Attwaters scored 145 off their 20 overs, Haslers reached their target with an over to spare. The match, which was held at Loughton Cricket Club’s ground, was – as you’d expect – played in a good-spirited and very professional atmosphere. Both teams were made up of some regular cricketers and a number who hadn’t played for some years.

After storming on to the British pop scene more than two years ago aged just 18, the career of beautiful Victoria Louise “Pixie” Lott has grown from strength to strength.

With her distinctive voice and infectious sounds it was evident this Essex teen was going to make an impact on the music industry and, with three number one hits under her belt, a double platinum debut album and an array of awards, the starlet has well and truly delivered.

Little Lott started singing in her church school in Kent and at the tender age of fi ve attended the Italia Conti Associates Saturday school in Chislehurst.

The talented youngster was then awarded a scholarship aged 11 at Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts.

Leaving her Kent home for Essex in her early teen years, Lott began hitting the West End stage in productions including Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and, as Louisa Von Trapp in BBC One’s Celebrate the Sound of Music.

With Pixie Lott, Matt Cardle and Olly Murs joining a long list of other Essex music artists, it defi nitely seems the county has got a little bit of sparkle added to its mix-up of young talent.

She also gained straight A grades in her GCSEs alongside her fl ourishing music career. With brains and beauty on her side, it didn’t take long for her to be spotted in the competitive industry.

Although she has been said to admire the song writing skills of Alicia Keys and the faultless talent of big artists, like Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston, she has also been known to “let her hair down” to pop rock artists like Kings of Leon and the Kaiser Chiefs.

Signing with Island Def Jam Music Group aged just 15, Lott then found herself in the middle of a bidding war which resulted in the bubbly teenager securing a deal with Mercury Records. The budding songwriter also formed a publishing deal with Sony/ATV Music Publishing while in the midst of writing and recording tracks for her debut album, Turn It up.

Cheeky tune, Mamma Do, flooded the sound waves in the summer of 2009 and soared straight to the top of the charts. Lingering in the Top 40 for weeks, Lott’s Christina Aguilera-style vocals, charming smile and sexy yet cheeky attitude had taken the British music industry by storm.

When you turn on the radio and hear Lott’s vocals you know it’s her – the style is distinctive and for such a youngster, her accuracy, especially live, is spellbinding.

But not only is Lott a great recording artist; her note-perfect yet unique live performances set her aside in a world of reality-television singing stars that were over-populating the industry at the time.

A fresh-faced and energetic youngster, Pixie Lott was everywhere, signing CDs, taking part in television interviews, and singing live and acoustic versions of her top hits – she was even chosen as the face of Nokia’s new pink phone collection.

Within three months of bursting on to the stage with Mamma Do, she had released up-beat number, Boys and Girls, which flew to the top as well.

Showing off her slender figure Lott would often be seen donning “short shorts” and flashing her perfect pins to hordes of teenagers and adoring fans, which have continually supported the young singer.

In the music video of her latest single, the white-teethed 20-year-old can be seen dancing the whole song through in tiny shorts, showing off her headline-making pins. She has even been noted at London Fashion Week as looking more like a model than a mere spectator.

Lott has accrued a number of awards so far in her musical stardom and was even named by American magazine, Billboard, as one of the Faces to Watch during her early career.

Over two years she has won two MTV Europe Music Awards, a Cosmopolitan ultimate Newcomer award, the Breakthrough Talent Award at the Variety Club Awards and a Virgin Media Music Award.

A party girl at heart and one to give every performance her all, Lott has played at all the popular music festivals over the past three summers including V Festival, Radio 1’s Big Weekend and T4 on the Beach, as well as numerous tours and award events.

The angelic-faced blondie has come back this summer stronger and sexier than before. Still maintaining her distinct vocals, she has lost the childish look she entered the industry with and, having had 10 inches chopped off her locks, seems to ooze the sex appeal of a cover-star model.

And despite not having been the main focus in the industry’s limelight in recent months, Lott has proven she’s definitely not a one-summer wonder with her most recent track, All About Tonight, flying straight to number one.

Hi ladies, tell us a little bit more about what you both do...

Ashlene: I provide permanent make-up for the face. Eyebrow services are vast and varied ranging from super blonde brows through to the power brow in darker shades; lip services include natural looking enhancements or replication of lipstick colour, improving upon and sometimes re-creating the borders of the lips. I also offer eye treatments that offer defi nition without the look of make-up through to highly defi ned strong looks.

Frances: I devise and administer a bespoke combination of facial and body treatments that are tailored to an individual’s needs. These treatments include dermal fi llers, muscle relaxing injections, skin peels, MesoTherapy and skin needling. It is about looking at a holistic and aesthetic approach, teaching clients how to care for their skin on a long-term basis, that’s very important.

What are your backgrounds?

A: I have 20 years experience in beauty therapy, make up artistry and as a medical aesthetic therapist. I was a facialist at Champneys in Tring, before working with a doctor providing medical grade skin peels, laser treatments and permanent make up. I then became a national trainer and account manager for a leading skin care brand and mineral make up range before establishing

How do you keep up to date with the latest treatments available?

A: I am a member of the SPCP the leading American Association for my Industry , I regularly attend courses here in the UK and have attended seminars and courses in the US. I want to be able to offer my clients every suitable treatment available to them.

F: It is such a fast moving and innovative industry that I often go to Paris for MesoTherapy and Advanced Skin Treatment training. I have also introduced my own combination treatments, ‘the eight-week non surgical facelift.’

So how did the two of you meet?

A: We met though Ash Parmar at Smile Design in Chigwell where we all began to work together because of a shared ethos.

F: Although we are three separate practitioners, we are all driven by the same desire to create amazing results that really make a difference to people’s lives and how they feel about themselves.

What are the benefi ts of having your treatments?

A: The obvious benefi t is professionally applied make up that lasts for months to years. Correctly shaped brows frame the face, instantly making somebody look ten years younger. Helping younger skin to prevent premature ageing.

Are your treatments painful or uncomfortable?

A: We use strong numbing agents to ensure our treatments are as painless as possible. We want our clients to feel relaxed, unrushed and most importantly, comfortable at all times.

F: We understand our clients’ fears and phobias surrounding the types of treatments we carry out but we endeavour to provide a caring and professional service.

Who is your average patient?

F: There isn’t one! 18- 75 is the current age range of my clients. They are male and female, all skin types and people from all ethnic origins. I have been very fortunate to work with a specialist in Asian and black skin for four years, enabling me to understand different skin types and specifi c skin problems. Knowledge is paramount for delivering safe and effective treatments.

A: I specialise in treating women, and my client base ranges from 18 to 82. As Frances says, understanding ethnic skins is an essential and normal part of my working day. In addition there are design variations for different races which makes a lot of difference in the design process of my treatments.

What makes your services diff erent to other practitioners?

F: We really ascertain what it is our clients would like to achieve, what it is they like or dislike and give them advice based on an extensive range of products available. Our experience within our market place is second to none. The fact that we refer clients to one another means we work in the best interest of our clients and can advise them at what stage semi permanent make up, smile correction or surgical intervention should happen as we only work with the best in the industry.

After a period of long days and late nights my skin was in serious need of some R&R so a consultation at Pure Medi-Spa prompted me to try out a new facial treatment called ThermoPeel.

ThermoPeel is an accelerated form of exfoliation done by means of a mechanical peeling on the skin surface. It is a revolutionary device, capable of eff ectively treating a variety of face and body skin issues: ageing, wrinkles, acne scars, hyper-pigmentation marks and other skin imperfections. Everything is cooked to perfection, right down to the homemade sweet-chilli sauce which gives a subtle kick against the cool freshness of the lettuce and the crunch of the bean sprouts.

Another noticeable and endearing attribute of the Vietnamese dishes is the sense of satisfaction it leaves you with. As well as oozing great taste and fl avours the food is light, leaving room for more which, in turn, allows for an enjoyable meal instead of feeling bloated and lethargic as is often the case post an instantly regrettable Chinese takeaway.

After devouring a plate of traditional Chinese starters, including what is simply the best portion of seaweed ever created, the main courses, a selection from both halves of the menu, are laid out to be sampled at will.

Sweet and sour prawns, sizzling chicken with chilli and black bean sauce and the Vietnamese shaking beef – you have to see it to believe it – are all excellent dishes. Delicately spiced and perfectly cooked, the quality of the food at Nam Tai is unequivocally superior to that of a run-of-the-mill Chinese buff et.

Although an all-you-can-eat option is off ered on the Nam Tai menu it remains a challenge to fi nd fault in the quality of every single dish produced.

Named after close friends of Peter, father and son owners of the accompanying golf complex interestingly enough, Nam Tai is truly a family-run establishment. Such values are charming and comforting in a restaurant environment and never more so than at Nam Tai, as an air of warmth and care emanates around the dining room and off the plates of fantastic food.

So Gini, tell us how Beauty just Around the Corner came about:I’d been in the beauty industry for a number of years as a make-up artist and, although the shop is more beauty-focussed, it is an extension of my work that was already established.I had to take a big bold step to set up Beauty Just Around the Corner; if I’d have thought about it properly, about when would have been a good time to open a shop, I probably never would have got around to doing it. It’s about taking that leap of faith – and I’m so happy I did.

So your background is in make-up artistry?Yes, I’ve been an Asian make-up artist for more than 15 years now and have worked all over the place. I’m very well known in the Asian make-up industry and really pride myself on my work. I love doing weddings and have seen some of the most beautiful and extravagant occasions, which I’ve really enjoyed working at.Everyone in the industry knows my name and my reputation is very good; I don’t mess people around, or let them down and I am always on time. I think it’s important to hold this sort of ethos, which is why it’s the attitude we have at the shop as well.

you opened the shop in Wanstead on valentine’s Day this year; how is it going?It’s going great! I have really loved the

whole project, especially designing and choosing the decor and interior design. It’s been great fun and it seems to be proving popular.We create a nice, relaxing environment with spa treatments, concentrating on massage and wellbeing. We also do microdermabrasion, oxygen therapy, manicures, pedicures and waxing.

Are you the only one working in the shop?I have a fantastic team of fi ve therapists working there. They’re lovely and the customers really like them and good relationships have been established since we opened – most importantly, people keep coming back! It’s about looking after people and making them feel special. It’s helped build the business and give us a good name.

Do you live near the shop?I actually live in Ilford, so it’s a 15-minute drive to work, which isn’t that bad. I love Wanstead though; it reminds me of where I was born and brought up in Kent. It’s a close-knit community with lots of gorgeous little boutique-type shops.

What do you like to do outside of work and at the evenings?Well, I don’t actually have a lot of spare time. I still run the Asian make-up business

I get a lot of satisfaction out of it but it is hard work – sometimes my working day will start at 4am as I set off to drive half way up the country, and then often I will work right through until 8pm.

Wow, that is a really long day – when do you have time to relax?

I always try to fi nd time for my three children – I love spending time with them and, whenever I’m not working, I always make sure we spend time together.My children (age 19, 13 and 10) and I will often go to the cinema and to the

theatre, so it’s nice to spend family time with them.

And what else do you get up to?I go for dinner with my friends as well – and sometimes they’ll pop to Wanstead to visit me in-between work. I love the food at The Larder (in High Street, Wanstead), and really enjoy popping to The Cuckfi eld (also in the High Street, Wanstead) with friends for a bite to eat.
