Around this time every year, I start looking forward to summer. Not to mowing

the lawn or swatting mosquitoes, but to the type of summer we all still dream

about--lemonade afternoons, cherry pie picnics, fishing, swimming--basically,

a good, old-fashioned, Norman Rockwell kind of summer. And, I’m convinced

there’s no better place to find that kind of summer than in Sumner.

Maybe it’s because we’re only half a letter off from actually being “Summer.”

But, I think it’s because of you. You just make it delightful to head out to any

event in the city. Whether it’s listening to music in Heritage Park or check-

ing out vintage motorcycles, everything listed in this newsletter will be full

of Sumner’s smiling neighbors, ready to greet each other and enjoy the day

together. That’s even better than cherry pie. (But maybe not rhubarb pie. Just

kidding.) Perhaps the Gershwins will forgive us if we say it’s “Sumnertime, and

the livin’ is easy.”

Welcome to Sumnertime!

Break out the sunscreen and get ready for a full summer in Sumner.

The Sumner Summer Arts Festival returns August 4 and 5 to fill Main Street with artists, food, entertainment, and fun.

Over 120 artist booths will feature a wide range of creative wares to spark your interests. Plus, artists must produce all of their own artwork, so you will only find quality, handcrafted items that are unique in design. There will also be a music stage for enter-tainment and children’s games and fun at Heritage Park.

After you have checked out the art booths and listened to the music, you are bound to be hungry. A wide range of food will be available, all provided by Sumner-area non-profit groups. Plus, each morning begins with a pan-cake breakfast held in the concession area. So, you can enjoy good, summer-time festival food and raise funds for local non-profits all at the same time!

For more information, visit www.sumnerartsfestival.org.

Handcrafts, Food, Fun--it’s All an Art!

All aboard for batter up! It’s easy to catch a weekend game of the Mariners from Sumner with Sound Transit’s Home Run Service. When there’s a weekend game start-ing at 1:05 pm, the Sounder train will pick you up in Sumner at 11:17 am and drop you off near Safeco Field at noon. To come home, the train departs Seattle’s King Street Station 30 min-utes after the game ends.

ride the rails from Sumner to mariners

Volleyball anyone? How about surf-ing (actual water, not the Web)? There’s something for every interest and every age--children, teens and adults. Hurry! Space is often limited for classes and trips.

(Summer School Edition)

What do i do with My Out of Town Guests?

Consider a Summer of Service

July 25thGive an Hour, and a Bit of BloodThe City of Sumner has invited Puget Sound Blood Center to come and be available for us all to donate blood. Last year hospitals ordered more than 250,000 units of red blood cells and 60,000 platelets. That means that each day, nearly 900 people must register togive blood to meet this ongoing de-mand. Imagine saving a life--sign up to give an hour and a bit of blood.

Sign up at City Hall’s Administrative Office or send an e-mail to [email protected].

OngoingBecome a City VolunteerThe City can use volunteers for a va-riety of projects. Whether you’re in-terested in nature or literature, people or projects, we have something to suit you. And, you have the chance to improve life for all of Sumner’s 9,000 citizens with a little of your time.

To find out more about volunteer opportunities, call Chuck Wright, Vol-unteer Coordinator, at 253-863-2910 or Bruce Johnson at 253-299-5731, [email protected].

If you’re looking for a really meaningful summer, you may want to schedule some activities that help you get involved and serve others as well.

In May, volunteers Steve & Zachary Canonica planted trees for the new trail along the White River.
