Hendrick Extravaganza

LEARLY Scary Bob was enthralled by Tamara Hawley, Administration and Program Coordinator for the

Hendrick Scholarship Foundation, who was here today supporting its Executive Di-rector, Gregg Pappas, by advancing his PowerPointTM. He shot three times as many photos of her as of anyone else. But, seeing the results, he can be excused; Sainted Editor might have spent an entire roll on her. (Just what is “an entire roll” of electrons, anyway?) President Paperweight interrupted our fellowship at 12:16, conscripting Blair

Ritchey for the Invocation and Bruce Glasscock for the Pledge. He thanked Joe Camarena for Greeting and summoned 2nd String Sergeant David McWhorter to introduce Visit-ing Rotarians and Guests. Kelly made the mistake of

recommending that we applaud David, so we obliged with our customary facetious claps. David thanked and told us that Nathan was AWOL in Mississippi (a word with three dou-ble letters, but the only word with three adjacent double letters is “bookkeeping”).

David recognized Chris Hamm (Metro) and Jim Adams (Richardson Central). Howard Matson welcomed back Rose Wildrom. Sara Akers introduced Katy Autry. And Ean Secret Santa Sullivan

searched for “a good friend, not sitting with me,” Jimmy Richardson.

Kelly made the first of 25 warnings that we would NNOOTT be meeting at Gleneagles next week. Instead, we’d be having a

reception dinner at the Stonebriar Country Club in Frisco to celebrate a successful Hendrick Foundation Scramble.

Randy Wright bounded to the podium to induct Plano Fire Chief Sam Greif (pro-nounced Gr-eye-f; German pronounces the last letter of the ie or ei pair) with sponsor Bruce Glasscock in tow. Randy crowed that we’d now secured the Fire Chief and have only an undertaker, school superintendent, college president, air conditioning, and several oth-er professions missing from our rosters. He concluded by whistling a theme by Elgar, saying, “That’s all the Pomp and Circum-stance you’re going to get.” Belying that, we rose to congratulate Sam, who came to us in August having been Fort Worth’s Deputy Fire Chief. Tony Miller. The booth featured a hand water pump that delighted the kids. We’re up for next year. Camille had an announcement about our AAnnggeell TTrreeee EEvveenntt. Participating with Barron Elementary, the YMCA, and others, we’re scheduled to host recipients at the BTH Bank (just try to pronounce that!) 1-4 pm on Saturday, 19 Dec, having purchased (Walmart, 7:30 am, Thursday, 10 Dec) and wrapped (BTH, 5-6:30, Tuesday, 15 Dec) gifts. Nancy Humphrey donned her “obligatory Rotary Hat” to announce that Hendrick denizen, Charla Fletch-er, was hawking Scramble Raffle tickets in the back of the room. She was also there to introduce Gregg Pappas, the Foundation’s Director since March, having spent 7½ years as Director of Park Cities’ YMCA. He is member of Park Cities Rotary, the 2nd largest in 5810. (Dallas Rotary is larg-est; we’re 3rd.) Gregg introduced us to Scary Bob’s favorite subject and proceeded to thank Plano Rotary and Nancy especially for our “amazing help” with the Scramble. He mentioned sev-

eral Hendrick staff present including Marty Taylor, Chair of the Student Success Committee, and Lori Cecil, the Foundation’s Event Manager. He welcomed scholar-ship recipients Wilfredo Delgado, who was “five hours away from his degree” at UT Dallas, and Saul Mendiola, who graduated from there last August. He told us the Foundation was started 25 years ago by Wayne Hendrick and has been supported since by sev-eral community leaders such as the Wells and Haggard families. He praised the volunteer Board, presided over by Richard Wells and including, among others, our own Rutledge, Mary Jo, Kelly, and Justin Roche. There are 14 scholarship students entering college this fall, and a total of 40 recipients currently in the program.

He praised them all for overcoming incredible “pain and suffering” to succeed in higher education. Hendrick is dedicated to “breaking the cycle of poverty.” It is the larg-est privately-funded Foundation involved in multi-year scholarship awards. And it is successfully graduating 75% of participants with two- or four-year degrees.

Preaching to the choir, he emphasized that the support is not only financial but offers a multi-pronged approach.

• Coaching/tutoring, required of recipients in at least their first year. A specific tutor is paired with them for the long haul.

• Educational planning, help with degree plans. • Career Guidance, to play their goals to their

strengths. • Reality Check Workshop: how to navigate the

world of big people problems (sponsored by Legacy Bank).

• And referral to community resources. Gregg gave an example of a three-legged stool. The seat is motivation, without which the legs fall. The legs:

• Financial • Personal and Social • Academic

representing support offered by the Foundation.

Many are first generation college at-tendees, without a knowledge base from home. They need help choosing an appropriate load of appropriate courses. The program’s alumni include account-ants, dental hygienists, hospitality workers, and even an advisor at Collin College. Gregg thanked the College and Plano Rotary as in-valuable partners. Recipients are required to take their first two years at Collin. Wilfredo Delgado echoed previous recipi-ents: “The Foundation has changed my Life.”

Born in the U.S., but raised in Mexico, he moved back at age 15 to come to PESH. He didn’t speak English when he arrived but de-livered an eloquent address to Rotary! He planned no college career; his father’s con-struction job offered no assistance. So he thought to work with his Dad to support the family. Then he got the letter from Hendrick. Working a full-time job, and supported by the Foundation for tuition and books, he tran-sitioned from Collin to UTD, and has almost completed his Accounting degree. One day he hopes to contribute to the Hendrick or some other scholarship to aid those coming after him. Saul Mendiola had a similar story. He went to Collin for three years and obtained a Marketing degree from UTD. He said that he “couldn’t have done it without help from you.” He too is the first in his family to graduate from college, but he won’t be the last; his two younger brothers want to follow in his foot-steps. He thanks his mentor for providing “tools to become a better person.”

Kelly praised the students and congratulated them for “making it happen.” He rec-ognized Judge Johnny as having been a founding Board member. Jim Cooper and Nancy tag-teamed Wayne with stories of his WWII exploits on Normandy Beach. Jim discovered that Wayne had never seen the hit series, Band of Brothers, so Rotary bought the DVD set for him. But when it was discovered he had no DVD player, they gifted

him with that as well. Wayne thanked us, not-ing he’d been born in a cotton patch, and he urged us to continue to support the Founda-tion. Wayne concluded, “Love you guys!”

Kelly distributed paperweights, led us in the Four-Way Test, and enabled fellowship at 1:02.
