What is a scam?Scams are schemes designed to deceive you, generally for the purpose of stealing your money or personal details.

Travelling con menNZ’ers are being ripped off by dodgy con men offering cheap deals valid for 'today only'.

Jobs such as painting and roof repairs are common tasks they offer at a cheap rate, often putting the resident under pressure to say yes.

Travelling con men frequently disappear and leave the job unfinished or of a poor standard.

What should I look out for?Be suspicious of people who:•knock on your door unexpectedly•offer cheap deals using words like 'for today

only'•ask for cash up front•offer to drive you to the bank to get money

to pay•make you feel pressured to accept their

offer.

On Line ScamsProtect yourself when buying:

• Be wary of sellers offering goods and well known brands at extremely low prices.

• Do not provide an up-front payment to a stranger via money order or wire transfer.

• Use secure payment options, such as Paypal or credit card.

• Do an internet search using the exact wording in the ad - many versions of this scam can be identified this way.

On Line ScamsProtect yourself when selling:

• If you get an email confirming that payment has been made, do not follow the link in the email to log in to your account with the payment service.

• Log into your account directly and check that the money has cleared, before sending the item.

• Be extra cautious of anyone asking to buy directly from you, rather than through an auction site or classifieds forum.

Computer and mobile protection:

•Keep your phone or other mobile device safe

•Always type the website address into your browser - Don't click on a link in or open emails and enter your personal info. They could be scams.

•Be careful what information you give on social networking sites - Thieves trawl sites like Facebook and Twitter for personal details to use.

•Disable pop-ups on your browser – As people can use them to install programs on your computer that 'spy' on you or record your key strokes.
