S&C IntelliCom® Mesh RadiosRF mesh architecture offers high-speed, easily extensible connectivity and a high level of availability across three separate wireless bands
IntelliCom® Mesh Radios provide reliable Ethernet connectivity over wireless mesh links, for superior performance in distribution automation and other applications. The radios form a multi-point to multi-point ad hoc wireless mesh network with no single point of failure.
With its unique combination of high throughput, scalability, reliability, and security, IntelliCom DA Mesh Radio provides unmatched support for automation restoration systems, automatic capacitor and switch controls, SCADA, grid optimization systems, and distributed energy storage. It greatly enhances fault isolation and circuit restoration speeds. IntelliCom DA Mesh Radio is compact enough to integrate within S&C’s distribution automation products, as well as equipment from other manufacturers. It’s also available as a standalone unit, installable in a user-furnished NEMA-rated enclosure.
IntelliCom WAN Mesh Radio is intended for mesh infrastructure applications. Unlike cumbersome wired networks, a self-forming IntelliCom WAN Mesh Radio network can be quickly deployed. And, unlike wired networks—where a cut in the cable can take several days to resolve—an IntelliCom WAN Mesh Radio network immediately routes traffic to an alternate link if there’s a problem, ensuring continuous service and network availability.
IntelliCom DA Mesh Radio and IntelliCom WAN Mesh Radio feature easy-to-use integrated spectrum analysis, network capacity planning, and antenna alignment tools. The radios are furnished as dual-radio-capable hardware, with enhanced functionality enabled through the purchase of software licenses.
Flexible ConfigurationIntelliCom Mesh Radios can operate in three separate wireless bands: the unlicensed 2.4-GHz and 5-GHz bands and the licensed 4.9-GHz U.S. public safety band. 20-MHz channel width is used on the 2.4-GHz and 5-GHz bands. 5-MHz and 10-MHz channel widths are used on the 4.9-GHz band.
IntelliCom WAN Mesh Radio can be configured for MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) operation, enabled through the purchase of a software license. MIMO operation allows the radio to utilize 802.11n technology to achieve throughput of up to 300 Mbps. When enabled, 40-MHz channel width is used. IntelliCom DA Mesh Radio can achieve throughput of up to 60 Mbps.
Dual-Radio FunctionalityTo maximize performance, IntelliCom Mesh Radios offer dual-radio functionality, enabled through the purchase of a software license. When enabled, IntelliCom Mesh Radios support two radio modes, providing hot-standby backup capability.
In “bonded” mode, the two radios are combined to operate as a single unit that doubles the bandwidth of a single radio.
In “unbonded” (linear) mode, the two radios operate independently, enabling sustained bandwidth levels over an unlimited number of hops. This mode permits long linear topologies with a sustained level of service to every radio. Each radio can operate in the 2.4-, 4.9-, or 5-GHz band.

Reliable Connectivity AnywhereAn IntelliCom Radio mesh is self-forming and self-healing, ensuring rapid deployment and dependable operation anywhere. To optimize performance, IntelliCom Mesh Radios feature patented AutoMesh™ Routing Protocol to manage network load and traffic congestion.
Wireless mesh, particularly in the 2.4-GHz and 4.9-GHz bands, is a viable alternative to cellular and other types of communication for applications requiring field-area connectivity at street level, where buildings and foliage can create interference. The optimal choice for critical applications, wireless mesh eliminates single points of failure, and provides multiple paths which ensure communication reliability and data integrity.
Near-Line-of Sight PerformanceIntelliCom Mesh Radios offer the near line-of-sight capability necessary to meet utilities’ requirement for reliable, high-bandwidth communication in remote and rugged terrain, where the radios can boost the backhaul capacity of SCADA monitoring networks. Users can deploy multi-hop, fully meshed networks and benefit from the radios’ redundancy and load-balancing capabilities, for improved network reliability.
“Smart adaptive” mesh technology mitigates the interference that typically reduces wireless throughput and reliability, especially in the noisy 2.4-GHz band. The noise-aware data path and noise-filtering algorithms enable the mesh to handle interference from other 2.4-GHz and 5.8-GHz WiFi devices. The spectrum analysis and other tools integrated into the radios permit administrators remotely monitor network health and further optimize performance.
Quality of Service S&C’s flow-based routing protocol supports advanced load-balancing and congestion-control mechanisms, for optimal routing within the mesh network. IntelliCom Mesh Radio technology also provides extensive VLAN capabilities, critical for deploying a multi-service network on a large scale. Deployments of up to several hundred radios are readily handled. Advanced features such as Gigabit Ethernet Direct™ support mesh connectivity across multiple locations.
6
End-to-End SecurityIntelliCom Mesh Radios ensure maximum data security and privacy. They feature WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) and WPA2 (Wi-Fi Protected Access Version 2) encryption between radios, and 256-bit AES encryption from ingress to egress. And IntelliCom Mesh Radios offer 802.11i support, digital certificates on network elements, digitally signed firmware files, MAC-based control lists, and VLAN-based access control lists. All Layer 3 data is encapsulated and accessible only to S&C radios.
IntelliCom Mesh Radios segment traffic on VLANs with secure access control on the same physical infrastructure. They also meet IEC 61850 GOOSE messaging protocol requirements—including Ethernet Multicast, VLAN 1Q, and VLAN 1P—ensuring that critical information, such as fast-trip protection messages, are delivered reliably.
Supports Multiple DevicesIntelliCom Mesh Radios include multiple Ethernet ports for connecting network devices or other networks to the mesh. They support devices using “Ethernet-to-Serial” technology to tunnel DNP3’s serial format through Ethernet and WAN TCP/IP or UDP.
