18:00 Meeting in the hotel lobby and departure from the hotel to Fort St Elmo 18:30 Arrival at Fort St Elmo and private tour of the Fort and Museum.
Fort St Elmo is a fort in Valletta. It stands on the seaward shore of the Sciberras Peninsula that divides Marsamxett Harbour from Grand Harbour, and commands the entrances to both harbours along with Fort Tigné and Fort Ricasoli, at the tip to Valletta. The original fort which witnessed some of the most intense fighting between the Knights of St John and the ottomans, during the Great Siege of 1565. Though relentlessly bombarded St Elmo was bravely defended to the last man by the Maltese and the Knights. When the fort finally surrendered, some 1500 Maltese and Spanish had lost their lives, but Turkish losses stood at 8000. When the Ottomans retreated from Malta the fort was rebuilt and reinforced, becoming partially incorporated into the seaward bastion of the fortress city of Valletta. It played an important role in the second siege of Malta during World War 2. Presently the fort houses the National War Museum.

FORT RINELLA + HAGAR QIM & MNAJDRA MEGALITHIC PARK + MDINA 1530 to 2200hrs

Programme Friday, 18th March 2016
15:30 Departure from the Grand Hotel Excelsior by coach 15:40 Arrival at the British Military Fort Rinella for a brief military re-enactment
display and a tea/coffee break. Built in 1878 by the British, Fort Rinella was the most technologically advanced war machine of its day. Powered by coal-fired steam driven hydraulics it could fire its monstrous 100-ton gun every six minutes, sending a one-ton shell up to a distance of eight miles to pierce no less than 21 inches (65cm) of ship armour. Fort Rinella was one of four 100-ton gun batteries built in Malta and Gibraltar for the protection of the harbours. These forts became necessary with the building of two powerful Italian battleships; the Duilio and Dandalo, both armed with four 100-ton guns each in revolving turrets. At the time, Britain used the Mediterranean as a quick route to India and it was feared that the growing naval power of Italy might tip the balance of power in the region.
Enquiries & Payment at Registration Desk

17:10 Arrival at the megalithic park temples. ISLAND OF GOZO: GGANTIJA MEGALITHIC TEMPLE + DWEJRA PARK + CITTADELLA 0830 to 1700hrs
Malta’s smaller, unspoilt sister island, where time has stood still, suspended for centuries, and where a warm smile is your only requirement for a journey back to the good old days, when enjoyment was pure and simple, yet all pervasive.
From the moment you will set eyes on this legendary Island, as soon as you spot the quaint harbour, till the time you reluctantly board the boat back to make your way back to the mainland, the day’s experience is bound to stay with you for a long time.
The magic of Gozo starts from the southern part facing Malta, which is low lying, but rises near the coast and forms the vertical cliffs that jut out like a bastion into the sea. We will see several narrow valleys cut through and dissecting the plateau. You will be immersed in history, going backs 6,000 year at Ggantija temples, the world’s oldest free standing structure. Stroll through the narrow back streets of the Capital, Victoria, with its ancient citadel, for a glimpse of a bygone era. We will drive down to the Dwejra inland sea and marvel at the gigantic Azure Window, wind-sculpted in the rocks over millennia.
