2 Then ask them to open their books and look at the text in exercise 1. Elicit what kind of writing it is (an email). Ask them to read the first sentence of the email and predict what kind of information will be included in the rest of the email.

3 The students then read the email carefully and complete the spaces with the shops from exercise 1. Tell them not to worry about words they don’t know the meaning of at this point.

4 When they have finished, check the answers as a whole class.

3 Answer the questions

1 Ask the students to read the questions and ask whether they can answer them from memory.

2 The students read the text and find the answers.

3 When they have finished, ask them to compare their answers with a partner. Invite different students to give their answers.

4 Ask the students whether there are any other words in the text they don’t know and encourage them to try to work out the meaning from the context.

2 Tell them that they are going to do an internet search to find out about big shopping centres in Egypt and the other kinds of activities they can find there.

3 Ask them to look at the Internet search box. Ask the students to work in pairs to research a large shopping centre in Egypt (preferably one they haven’t visited before).

4 When they have carried out their research, ask the students to report their findings to the rest of the class. Ask them to tell the class about activities they do or would like to do at a shopping centre with their family or friends.

Thepastsimple:irregularverbs• Irregular verbs in the past simple tense have different forms.

There is a list on page 71.

• We form the negative of the past simple irregular with did + not + infinitive. The form is the same for all subjects: I didn’t go. She didn’t buy any books.

• We form the Yes/No question with did + infinitive. The form is the same for all subjects. We can give short answers: Did Amir see his friends? Yes, he did./No, he didn’t.

• We can also put question words What/When/Where/Who/How/Why in front of did: What did you eat? I ate fish. Where did you put it? I put it on the table.

1 Underline the verbs in the sentences

1 Ask the students to look at the photo and ask What can you see? Where are the people? (People shopping. They’re at the shops.)

2 Ask the students to read the example sentence and look at the underlined verb. Ask When was this? to elicit that it was in the past.

Page 3: SB pages 35–39 WB pages 23–25 Shops and shopping · brainstorm a list of shops the students already know. • Ask the student to discuss the following questions ... irregular

78

3 Tell them to copy the rest of the sentences into their copybooks and underline the other verbs in the sentences.

4 Ask different students to read out the sentences and say which words they underlined. Then ask what the infinitive forms of the verbs are, and elicit the negative and question forms of the past simple.

5 Ask the students to tell you what they know about the past simple. Ask What ending do regular verbs have in the past simple? (-ed) Ask why the verbs in these sentences don’t end in -ed (they are irregular).

6 Finally, ask the students to read through the Grammar box and find examples of each rule in the sentences.

7 Practise the irregular verb forms by preparing sets of infinitive and past simple cards, using some of the verbs from the list at the end of the Student’s Book. (Alternatively, the students can make the cards themselves in class). The students play a memory matching game in pairs or small groups. They put the cards face down on the table. They then take turns to turn over a card, say the infinitive or past simple form of the verb and turn over a second card. If the cards match, they keep them. If they don’t, they turn them both back over again and the next student takes a turn. The students should only turn over the second card if they say the correct verb form.

2 Complete the sentences with the past simple of the verbs in brackets

1 Ask the students to read the example sentence and complete the second verb together as a class.

2 The students complete the exercise individually and then check their answers in pairs. Then check the answers as a whole class.

Answers:

3 Ask and answer questions using these words

1 Write the prompts for the first question on the board and construct the complete question together as a class. Then ask two students to read out the question and answer shown in the speech bubbles.

2 The students then read the rest of the prompts and construct the questions together in pairs. Go round and monitor while they are working, helping where necessary.

3 When they have prepared the questions, the students take turns to ask and answer the questions.

4 Invite pairs of students to hold mini-dialogues as in the example. Ask the rest of the class to decide whether the question was formed correctly and to correct it if not.

Mother: Of course, Salma. Salma: How often do you go shopping? Mother: I go shopping every weekend, and usually

week. Where do you usually go shopping? Mother: I usually go to the local shops in our

village. They are my favourite places to go shopping.

Salma: Why do you like the local shops?Mother: I like shopping in our village because you

can buy a lot of things in different shops. You can buy meat, eggs, fruit and

vegetables. People in the big supermarkets are not always very friendly, but the people who work in the local shops are very friendly! They know me well because I visit them often. The food is usually cheap and healthy, too. The bakery has fresh bread every day, so I always buy bread there.

2 The students work in pairs to complete the sentences with because and so. Remind them to try to follow one sentence on from the other, as in the example, but tell them not to worry if they find this difficult.

Example answers:2 I want to go shopping because I need a new book. I want to go shopping, so let’s go to the shopping centre. 3 I need a new notebook because my old notebook is full. I need a new notebook, so let’s go to the shops.4 My grandfather is staying in bed today because he’s sick.
