(1) Detector cell, chemical agent, NSN 6665-00198-5687.
(a) For visual examination. Sample lotsin accordance with MILSTD-105 using the InspectionLevel (IL) and the Acceptable Quality Level (AQL) asspecified in appendix A.
(b) For test. Sample lots in accordancewith MIL-STD-105 using Inspection Level S-3 and anAQL of 4.0 percent defective. Randomly select thesample quantity from the visually acceptable portion ofthe sample obtained in (a) above. If the sample ofvisually acceptable items is of equal size as thatrequired for testing, the entire sample shall be subjectedto test. Should the sample of visually acceptable itemsbe smaller than the required for testing, additionalsamples shall be selected from the lot.

B-3. Inspection Procedure.The sample of items listed in paragraph B-1 shall bevisually inspected for preservation, unit packing,packing, and marking defects as specified paragraph abelow. The end item or components thereof shall bevisually inspected for defects listed in the applicableclassification of defects tables B1 through B-10. Therequired sample size for tests of visually acceptableitems shall be subject to the tests described in c belowas applicable. Tables B-1 through B-3 and B-7 throughB-10, in addition to providing classification of visualdefects, provides classification of test failures. Theclassification of test failures is provided to differentiatebetween the test failures to be considered as critical,wherein one item failing the test would be cause forimmediately suspending the lot from issue and use, andthe test failure to be considered as major whereinacceptance or rejection of the lot would be based on theacceptance number of the sampling plan.

(2) Mustard Test.
(a) Requirements.1 The test solution must turn from
white to red or blue for a positive result when testingwith reagent D and E.
2 The test solution must turn whitefor a negative result when testing with reagent D and E.
(b) Procedure.1 For a positive test, prepare,
immediately prior to test, an aqueous solution containing5 ppm mustard (e.g. HN-3) by diluting with distilledwater, a solution of mustard in acetone to obtain properconcentration. Test in accordance with paragraph II.Cof the instruction booklet of the M2 Kit.
2 For a negative test, repeat theabove using distilled water (containing the same amountof acetone as used in the positive test solution) in lieu ofthe mustard solution.
(3) pH test.(a) Requirements. The test papers
shall produce colors equivalent to those shown on thepH color chart in instruction booklet of the M2 kit.
(b) Procedures. Using commerciallyprepared buffered solutions of pH 4.5, 6.0, and 7.5,immerse a sample test paper from vial F into eachsolution. Use a fresh paper in each solution.
Compare the resulting colors of thetest papers with the nitrazine pH color chart in theinstruction booklet of the AN-M2 kit.
(4) Chlorine demand test.(a) Requirements.
1 The test solution must have nocolor or a color lighter than the yellow band on theplastic vial for a positive result when testing withreagents G and X.
2 The test solution must have anorange color or a color darker than the yellow band onthe plastic vial for a negative result when testing withreagents G and X.
(b) Procedures.1 For a positive test result, place
one tablet from vial "G" in 250 ml. of distilled water andstir until dissolved. Allow to stand for 5 minutes. Fill theplastic container "X" to the bottom of the yellow bandwith this solution. Place one tablet from vial "X" incontainer, and swirl until it is completely dissolved.Compare color of resulting solution with that of theyellow band on plastic vial.
2 For a negative test result, repeatabove, omitting tablet from vial "G".
(5) G-agents test.(a) Requirements.
1 The test solution must turn ayellow color equal or darker than the band on the

Take six specimens at random from each sample roll ofM9 paper. Test two specimens with each of the aboveagents. Record the color change and the time requiredfor the change.
(3) Peel strength.(a) Requirement. The peel strength, from
steel, of the adhesive side of the M9 detector papershall be not less than 80 nor more than 128 ounces perinch.
(b) Equipment required. Adhesive tester,steel panel and rubber covered mechanically operatedroller as specified in PSTC-1.
(c) Procedure. Determine the peel strengthof the M9 detector paper in accordance with PSTC-1with the following exceptions:
1 The test specimen shall be taken atrandom from each sample roll of M9 detector paper.
2 Each prepared steel panel, with theadhesive side of M9 paper attached, is conditioned for24 hours at 23 ± 2 degrees C (73.4 ± 3.6 degrees F) and50 ± 2 percent relative humidity prior to testing.
3 Paragraph 5.3 of PSTC-1 does notapply.
(4) B-1 dye content.(a) Requirement. The M9 detector paper
shall contain a minimum of 0.7% (by weight) B-1 Dyeand a maximum of 0.9% (by weight).
(b) Equipment required. Ordinary laboratoryequipment.
(c) Procedure.1 Preparation of calibration curve.
Weigh 1.00 gram (g) of standard dye sample to thenearest 0.1 milligram (mg) and dissolve in a 500
milliliter (ml) volumetric flask at 25 degrees C. Make upto volume and mix well (this is solution A). Fromsolution A, prepare 4 additional solutions. Pipet 40 ml,30 ml, 20 ml, and 10 ml aliquots of solution A intoseparate 100 ml volumetric flasks and make each up tovolume with acetone at 25 degrees C (these aresolutions B, C, D, and E, respectively). Determineabsorbance of solutions A through E with a suitablespectrophotometer at 510 nanometers (nm) usingacetone as a blank. Plot the absorbance versusconcentration (g of B-1 Dye per 100 ml of solution) ongraph paper.
2 Measurement. Weighapproximately 12.5 centimeters (cm) of B-1 paper to thenearest 0.1 mg and cut it into small pieces(approximately 1/4 x 1/4 cm) into a beaker. Add 5 to 10ml of acetone to the beaker and swirl to extract the B-1Dye. Decant the liquid into a 100 ml volumetric flask.Repeat the extraction until the extract is colorless, thenmake two further extractions. Make up to volume withacetone at 25 degrees C and mix well. Determineabsorbance at 510 nm. From the calibration curve,determine B-1 Dye concentration for the correspondingabsorbance. Calculate the percent B-1 Dye in the paperas follows:Percent B-1 Dye = 100 C

b. Basis of surveillance. Surveillance for WaterTesting Kit, Chemical Agents: M272, will be conductedon the basis of manufacturer's, miscellaneous, or mixedlots. Miscellaneous or mixed lot size shall not exceed300 items.
c. Sampling. Sampling of lots shall be conductedin accordance with the requirements of section II,paragraph 8 of this bulletin and as follows: (1) Fornondestructive visual examination. (1) VX Nerve Agent Test.(a) Requirements. This sample shall respond
to either the absence or presence of nerve agent (VX).(b) Procedure. Dilute a quantity of VX of
known purity, to 100 ml in a volumetric flask withisopropyl alcohol so that the solution contains 10microliters of pure VX (Stock Solution A). Dilute 0.1 mlof Stock Solution A to 100 mL in a volumetric flask withdeionized water having pH of between 5.0 and 6.0(Stock Solution B). Dilute 2 mL of Stock Solution B to10 mL with deionized water in a volumetric flask toproduce a working solution of 0.02 milligrams (mg) VXper liter. Stock solutions shall not be more than sevenconsecutive calendar days old when used. The pH ofthe deionized water may be adjusted with hydrochloricor sulfuric acid, if necessary. Fill the bottle to the fill linewith the final solution and test for VX using theapplication procedure on the instruction card. Use theinstruction card to determine if the test is positive.
(2) Blank (VX). Perform the test described aboveusing distilled water as the water to be tested.
(3) Mustard (H) Test.(a) Requirements. This sample shall respond
to either the absence or presence of mustard (H).WARNING
Alkaline chemical used in themustard test is extremely hazardous.One drop of this liquid accidentallysplashed into the eye can causepermanent vision loss even ifimmediate first aid is applied.Immediately flush the eye with largeamounts of water for 20 to 30minutes, if possible, with anotherperson's help. Seek immediatemedical treatment. If alkalinesolution is swallowed, do not inducevomiting. Dilute alkali by givingwater to drink, and seek medicaltreatment.
(b) Procedure. Mix 0.1 mL of HD,conforming to MIL-C--12051, with 0.9 mL of methanol.Dilute 8 microliters of this solution to 500 mL in avolumetric flask, using water containing 3 percent byweight sodium chloride. Dilution will be adjusted toallow for the actual purity of the HD so that the finalworking solution is 2 milligrams (mg) HD per liter. Testthe final solution within 30 minutes. Fill the bottle to thefill line with the
final solution and test for mustard using the applicableprocedure on the instruction card. Use the instructioncard to determine if the test is positive. The HD-methanol solution shall be no more than 1 week oldwhen it is used.
(4) Blank (H). Perform the tests described aboveusing distilled water to be tested.
(5) Cyanide (AC) Test.(a) Requirements. This sample shall respond
to either the absence or presence of cyanide (AC).(b) Procedure. Dissolve 0.5 g of potassium
cyanide in water and dilute to 100 ml with water in avolumetric flask. Dilute 10 mL of this solution to 1 literwith water in a volumetric flask. Fill the bottle to the fillline with the final solution and test for cyanide using theapplication test procedure on the instruction card. Usethe instruction card to determine if the test is positive.
(6) Blank (AC). Perform the tests described aboveusing distilled water as the water to be tested.
(7) Lewisite (L).(a) Requirement. This sample shall respond
to either the absence or presence of Lewisite (L).(b) Procedure. Dissolve 15 microliters of
Lewisite (betachlorovinyldichloroarsine having aminimum purity of 87.0 percent by weight and maximumarsenic trichloride content of 4.0 percent by weight) in500 mL of water in a volumetric flask. Dilute 100 mL ofthis solution to 1 liter with water in a volumetric flask.Dilution will be adjusted to allow for the actual purity ofLewisite so that the final working solution is 2 mg as +3per liter. Fill the bottle to the fill line with the finalsolution and test for Lewisite using the applicationprocedure on the instruction card. Use the instructioncard to determine if the test is positive.
(8) Blank (L). Perform the tests described aboveusing distilled water as the water to be tested.N-5 Special Instructions . If difficulty is experienced in keeping thedetector from sounding the alarm during this warm upperiod, remove the flow meter and rain shield adapterand install the gas particulate filter from the M140 TestSet.
c. Chemical Detector Cell. The RADIATIONHAZARD and HIGH VOLTAGE notes in paragraph P-1apply.
Pressure test. Prepare the M140 Test Set inaccordance with TM 3-6665-312-30&P, paragraphs 2-5fthrough n only. Perform the pressure test in accordancewith paragraph 2-10, table 2-4.
d. Pump Unit, Reciprocating.(1) Pressure test. Prepare the M140 Test Set
in accordance with TM 3-6665-312-30&P, paragraph 2-5. Perform the pressure test in accordance withparagraph 2-9, table 2-3, test number 1.
(2) Flow rate test. Connect the dc powersource to the M140 Test Set. Operate bellows andpump (8) until pressure vacuum gauge reads 15 inchesof water. Place pressure lock in closed horizontal(handle down) position. Observe the pressure vacuumgauge for 2 minutes. If the pressure drops more than 1inch of water below the reading recorded above, theflow meter is leaking excessively and is defective.Remove the flow meter from the pressure test tubing.Remove the plastic adhesive tape completely from theflow meter. Reinstall the rubber tip on the flow meter.
g. Case bottom heater resistance test. Performthe bottom case heater resistance test in accordancewith TM 3-6665-312-30&P, paragraph 2-7, table 2-1, testnumber 14.
h. M273 Maintenance Kit test. The RADIATIONHAZARD and HIGH VOLTAGE notes in paragraph P-1apply. Perform the wipe test on the M43A1 Detectorunit in accordance with paragraph P-4a(1).

(c) Set the M140 Test Set alarm switchto INHIBIT (refer to TM 3-6665-312-30&P, paragraph 2-7, table 2-1, test number 7c).
(d) Operate the M43A1 Detector untilthe M140 Test Set ammeter stabilizes between 3 and 7volts. Several minutes of operation may be required tostabilize.
(e) Note the stabilization voltage.(f) Remove the power cable from the
M43A1 Detector.(g) Unscrew the air filter plug and install
the M273 Maintenance Kit air filter to be tested into theM43A1 Detector.
CAUTIONDO NOT operate the M43A1 withoutthe air filter plug installed. Seriousdamage to the M43A1 could result ifthis caution is not observed.
(h) Reinstall the air filter plug andpower cable onto the M43A1 Detector and start thestopwatch. At 2 minutes (after power application) theM140 Test Set ammeter indication shall be no morethan 1 volt above nor 0.5 volt below the stabilizationvoltage recorded in (5) above.
(3) Stimulant output test. Perform theSimulation Output test on the M273 Maintenance KitTest Paddles.
(a) Prepare the M43A1 Detector andM140 Test Set for testing the test paddle samples byperforming operations (2Xa) through (d).
(b) Remove the power cable from theM43A1 Detector.
(c) Unscrew the air filter plug and installM273 Maintenance Kit test paddle to be tested into theM43A1 Detector.
CAUTIONDO NOT operate the M43A1 withoutthe air filter plug installed. Seriousdamage to the M43A1 could result ifthis caution is not observed.
(d) Reinstall the air filter plug andpower cable onto the M43A1 Detector, and start thestopwatch. The M43A1 Detector should alarm in lessthan 2 minutes after power application and M140 TestSet ammeter indication shall be no more than 18 voltsnor less than 12 volts at 2 minutes.
(e) Remove the power cable from theM43A1 Detector.

(f) Unscrew the air filter plug andremove the test paddle.
(g) Reinstall the air filter plug andreinstall the power cable on the M43A1 Detector.
(h) Operate the M43A1 Detector untilthe M140 ammeter stabilizes between 3 and 7 volts. Asmuch as 30 minutes running time may now be requiredto clean out the detector and allow it to stabilize after thetest paddle test.
(i) Only after the M43A1 Detector hasstabilized, is it ready to test another test paddle, or to besecured and returned to storage.
(j) When testing is complete and theM43A1 Detector has been stabilized, disconnect powerfrom detector.
(k) Remove outlet filter in accordancewith TM 3-6665-312-30&P, paragraph 2-30b.
(l) Return all parts to their storagelocations on the M43A1 Detector and M140 Test Set.
(m) Install all caps and covers on theM43A1 Detector.
i. Power Supply, M10A1 operational check. TheHIGH VOLTAGE WARNING in paragraph P-1 applies.

b. Basis for Surveillance. Surveillance for itemslisted in paragraph Q-1 will be conducted on the basis ofmanufacturer's, grand, miscellaneous, or mixed lots.Miscellaneous or mixed lot size shall not exceed 50items.

Q-4. Tests.a. Wipe test.
(1) Requirements:(a) Any sustained reading of the
AN/PDR-27 or equivalent meter that is twice the back-ground level indicates contamination of the CAM.
(b) Results from Army IonizingRadiation Dosimetry Center (AIRDC) must indicate nocontamination.
(2) Equipment Required:(a) RADIAC set AN-PDR-27, NSN
6665-00-466-9778, AN/VDR-@, NSN 6665-01-222-1425, or equivalent meter.
(b) Ball-point pen, NSN 7520-01-060-5820.
(c) Envelope, mailing 3 3/8 X 8 3/8inch, NSN 7530-00-198-5873.

0 to 0.5 mR/hr, or the lowest scale.2. Open the beta shield of the
probe of the meter.3. Place wipe paper approximately
1/4 inch in front of the probe and note the indication.DO NOT TOUCH THE PROBE WITH THE WIPE.
WARNINGAny sustained reading of the AN-PDR-27 (or equivalent meter) that istwice the background may indicatenickel-63 contamination. If thereading is over twice thebackground, discontinue inspectionof the CAM, and place in a plasticbag until the wipe test has beenanalyzed by the AIRDC laboratory toverify that nickel-63 contamination ispresent.
(h) Place swipe test cloth in markedenvelope
(i) Seal envelope which contains swipetest cloth with tape. Mark on the envelope MAILROOM-DO NOT OPEN.
(j) Place sealed, marked envelope andcomputer transaction card(s) in a second envelope andaddress to the AIRDC office in paragraph b above.
(k) Seal envelope with tape. Washhands with soap and water.
(l) AIRDC will notify the sender of thewipe test results.
b. Self test.(1) Requirements.
(a) CAM display must come on anddisplay the following indications:
1. H mode is shown; if G mode isshown, press G H mode pushbutton switch. Turn CAMoff, then on again. Verify H mode is shown.
2. Markers A and B are shown.3. All eight bars are shown.4. Three vertical dots are shown.5. BL is shown.6. WAIT is shown.
(b) Display must clear from self testafter 30 seconds (H mode, Wait, and A and B markersremain). WAIT must disappear from the display. Up toeight hours may be necessary for WAIT to disappear ifCAM has been in storage for longer than thirty days.
(2) Equipment. Stopwatch, NSN 6645-00-250-4680.
(3) Procedure.(a) Ensure the nozzle protective cap is
in position on monitor case assembly.(b) Press in and release pressure on
pressure release button on nozzle protective cap.(c) Insert battery into CAM. Ensure
that terminal end of battery is inserted first.(d) Press ON OFF pushbutton switch
and observe display for required response.c. Confidence test.
(1) Requirements.(a) At least three bars appear after
exposure of the CAM to the confidence sample in bothG and H modes.
(b) Display should clear to one, or zerobars within 5 minutes.
(2) Equipment.(a) Confidence sample.(b) Stopwatch, NSN 6645-00-250-4680.
(3) Procedures.(a) Confidence test is to be performed
after the CAM has passed the self test. Let CAM run 30minutes after wait has disappeared.
(b) Place a filtered nozzle standoff ontoCAM nozzle assembly.
(c) Remove confidence sample fromcarrying harness and perform H confidence test asfollows:
1. Open H vapor shroud ofconfidence sample.
2. Insert CAM nozzle assembly inH end of confidence sample for 1 second (confidencesample should touch filtered nozzle standoff).

3. Remove confidence sampleand close vapor shroud.
4. Remove the filtered nozzlestandoff from the CAM nozzle assembly and replace thenozzle protective cap.
5. Note number of bars displayedand time for display to clear.
(d) When CAM has cleared, continuewith G mode confidence test.
(e) Press G H mode pushbutton switch;verify mode changes from H to G mode. WAIT may bedisplayed for several seconds. When WAIT hasdisappeared, proceed. The three dots may also appearfollowing the mode change-wait until the dots disappear(up to 30 minutes).
(f) Perform G confidence test in thesame way as the H confidence only using the G end ofthe confidence sample.
d. Sieve operational test. This test requires specialequipment and procedures. Testing can only be done atan approved facility. This includes tests for both theSeive Breather Assembly and the Drift Tube Module.For information on test facility, contact Headquarters,U.S. Army Armament, Munitions, and ChemicalCommand, ATTN: AMSMC-QAE(A), AberdeenProving Ground, Maryland 21010-5423.
e. Acetone source quantity.(1) Requirement. The acetone source shall
contain .05 grams of acetone.(2) Equipment.
(a) Scale accurate to 1 mg.(b) Oven capable of holding a constant
120 ± 5 degrees C for 12 hours. Example, IsotempSeries 100 Utility Lab Oven as listed in the FisherScientific Catalog.
(3) Procedure.
(a) Remove acetone source from sievepack and weigh.
(b) Slice open and release acetone.(c) Dry acetone source in an oven for
at least 12 hours at 120 C, or until their weights areconstant to within 1 mg. Allow acetone source to reachambient temperature and reweigh.
(d) Compare weights before and afteropening and drying. The difference in weights must beno less than the required amount.
f. Display assembly operational test.(1) Requirements.
(a) CAM display must come on anddisplay the following:
1. H mode.2. Markers A and B.3. All eight bars.4. Three vertical dots.5. BL.
a. WAIT.(b) CAM must switch on and off when
ON OFF pushbutton switch is pressed and changemodes when G H mode pushbutton switch is pressed.
(2) Equipment. CAM.(3) Procedures.
(a) Insert display assembly into CAMand run through self test (para -4c) checking for properdisplay.
(b) When self test is complete andWAIT disappears, press G H mode switch and ensure aproper mode change.
NOTETests which require disassembly ofthe CAM can only be performed at anapproved test facility as stated in theNRC license.
