Saying it without Words marks my eleventh year as Director of the NSW Public Schools Dance Festival and I take great pride in presenting the exceptional work of so many students and their teachers in this exciting week of performance.
The title of the 2019 Festival has been inspired by the creative work of the choreographer Akram Khan. Akram is one of Britain’s most successful and prolific choreographers. Born in the UK to a Bangladeshi family, his cultural roots connect with South Asia. He trained in the Indian classical form Kathak, as well as in western contemporary dance languages. Throughout his career he has blended these influences in a quest for new ideas, new creative partnerships, new marriages of story, feeling and form.
He said “What I love about contemporary dance is that it gives you the space to interpret the story yourself, all you have to do is suggest something.”
The NSW Public Schools dance program reaches beyond the classroom to extend students’ opportunities and build their technical and creative abilities. It is a privilege to see the improvement and development of students each year with the support and dedication of teachers, peers, carers and industry partners.
Forging partnerships with professional dance organisations is integral to the success of our programs and we are extremely grateful for our ongoing relationship with Sydney Dance Company, The Sydney Opera House contemporary dance programs and The Australian Ballet education team.
The next 12 months are bursting with workshops and performances, so make sure you visit our website for upcoming programs and events. For now please sit back and enjoy a fabulous evening of Saying it without Words.
Welcome back to the NSW Public Schools State Dance Festival of 2019. I am so pleased that Sydney Dance Company and The Arts Unit are in our sixth year of partnership – it has been such an honour to see the quality of work that has been produced by all the teachers, students and parents involved with the dance program over the years. I look forward to many more years of partnership!
I have been dancing since I was a little boy and I believe in contemporary dance; it’s exciting, it’s moving and it’s transformative for both the audience and the performers. I have seen firsthand the benefit of investing in what we do – I have had the pleasure of watching people of all ages across Australia and all over the world respond to dance; be challenged, be inspired and be thrilled. There is a very real magic that happens when a group of young dancers take to the stage and share what they have worked so hard to create.
The Arts Unit is such an imperative part of the development of dance in our state; encouraging the next generation of young dancers and of young artists, to dare to create and to explore their own ideas as people.

Dance brings people together. Beyond the language we speak, beyond where we come from around the world, we all understand the body. We can all communicate with our body. Whether it’s in a ballroom, the street, a disco, or whether it’s on stage, dance is a universal language which can bring everyone together. Rafael Bonachela
Welcome to the 2019 State Dance Festival. Over seven performances, more than 1,500 students, representing public schools from throughout NSW, will showcase their talents at The Seymour Centre. These Kindergarten to Year 12 students, and their teachers, have been working together all year to prepare for tonight’s performance, one that I know you will thoroughly enjoy.
Engaging in dance, as in any art form, is essential to the human experience, challenging us with different points of view and compelling us to empathise with others. The schools represented in this festival have identified dance education as a key strategy in achieving their goals and those of the NSW Department of Education. Research indicates that participation in arts activities leads to increased student motivation and engagement in learning, has a positive impact on academic and personal wellbeing outcomes and promotes higher self-esteem.
The State Dance Festival provides an opportunity to showcase high calibre dance education in public schools across NSW. Congratulations to schools, teachers and students whose works have been selected to perform in ‘Saying it without Words’. It is a testament to your creativity and dedication to dance as an art form.
Your participation as audience members, and your support in family and school settings, is truly appreciated by tonight’s performers and their teachers.
Enjoy!
