SAYANO-SHUSHENSKY BIOSPHERE RESERVE
The Coordination Committee of the Sayano-Shushensky State Wildlife Biosphere Reserve
Administrations of governmental regions
Administrations of Specially Protected Natural Areas of the Altai-Sayansk Ecoregion
Land users of adjacent territories
Projects for preservation and study of rare
species of animals are under the personal
control of the top officials of the state
government.
Its main objective is the achievement of a balance of interests between these entities and the goal of rational environmental management.
Besides natural processes in the reserve, the influence of man-made factors on the biogeocenoses of the
Western Sayan Mountains is being studied. The reserve's unique nature is also based on the fact that on
its eastern border lies the reservoir of the Sayano-Shushenskaya Hydroelectric Power Station,
and a vital subject for researchers is monitoring its influence on the interaction of living
and inert elements on the reservoir's shore.
Because of the Sayano-Shushensky State Wildlife Biosphere Reserve's relatively large area, clearly defined natural borders
and various climatic conditions, its natural states are fairly simple to monitor. It has a high degree of biological diversity and a
broad mixture of florae and faunae from different climate zones, as well as from various altitude zones.
The Reserve has also initiated a number of nature protection projects.
As a result, several protected nature areas have been organized:
“Grey-Haired Sayan Mountain Range” biosphere polygon (2000), within Ermakovsky
District of Krasnoyarsk Krai; “Shushensky Pine Forest” National Park (1995);
“Ergaki” Regional Nature Park (2005); and “Pozarym” National Wildlife Refuge (2012).
The Reserve also cooperates
in several projects with the
local communities of
Ermakovsky and Shushensky
regions of Krasnoyarsky Krai,
and Tuva, including
maintaining the environmental
management and national
traditions concerning the use
and preservation of sacred
places and mineral sources
(called “Arzhaans,” for the
local word from the Tuvan
language).
