“We can’t do it without you!”2018 continues to present new challenges for the London Food Bank.

It has just been over 30 years since the doors at the Food Bank first opened and we can’t believe how quickly the time has gone. The 360 families a month we helped in January of 1987 has grown almost tenfold to an average of 3,361 families per month for the first few months of 2018.

We also continue to look for ways to help serve people better – particularly in the area of fresh food. A few years ago we instituted a program called Community Harvest – to increase the donations of fruits and vegetables from area farmers. Last year, we revitalized the “Plant a Row - Grow a Row” program to focus on families growing food within the city. For this year, the partnership is with grocery stores to increase the amount of fresh donations!

Last year over 41% of the food received at the Food Bank was fresh or frozen!

The ongoing partnership with the Curb Hunger Food Drive is important for the Food Bank because summer traditionally sees the Food Bank stocks decrease. It is this food drive in particular that allows us to provide help to the individuals, families and other agencies during these months.

For this, we particularly thank the public for their generosity over the years, and ask them to continue to join with us in helping their fellow Londoners. We also thank the City of London for its leadership in this drive, and the ability to bring together so many other community partners that are vital to making this drive so successful.

Jane Roy, Co-Executive Director of the London and Area Food Bank

How It WorksThe London Cares Curb Hunger Food Drive is the longest running food drive of its kind in Canada, and it’s never been easier to give! Residents of London can participate in 4 easy ways: at their neighbourhood grocery store, at their local fire station, placed at the curb in the morning beside their Blue Box (on their recycling day) or sign up for the Plant a Row - Grow a Row program and donate a row of produce to the Food Bank.

London residents are encouraged to drop off a donation to their grocery store or a local fire station from June 1 – 9, which will help to stock the Food Bank shelves for the summer months. Also, during this time, on the morning of their regular collection day, Londoners may also place their non-perishable food donations next to their Blue Box in either clear bags or plastic grocery bags. A colourful ribbon or cloth should be tied to the plastic grocery bag to make sure it is not picked up as garbage. The City’s recycling contractors, Miller Waste and volunteer crews will be collecting the food donations early from the curb. Residents in apartment buildings and anyone who misses their regular recycling pickup are encouraged to participate by dropping their donations off at participating neighbourhood grocery stores or local fire station. If residents would like to provide fresh produce to the Food Bank, they’re encouraged to sign up for the Plant a Row - Grow a Row at londonfoodbank.com.

With more than 20 years under our belts, this continues to be the longest running London Cares Curb Hunger Food Drive and partnership of its kind in Canada. This Food Drive provides multiple ways for Londoners to help those in need in the community. It is also one of the most unique food drives in Canada. The success is based on the partnership formed between businesses, community organizations, Londoners, media and the City. People that care. We are grateful that so many partners, past and present, are able to set aside time to help the community. For 2018, not only are we promoting again the Grow-a-Row Program, we will also be focusing on the important growth in food rescue that is occurring in many of London’s grocery stores. The need remains in London and, fortunately, so does the care and compassion to help.

Jay Stanford, Director, Environment, Fleet & Solid Waste City of London

In 2017, over 40,415 hampers were distributed to families in need through the London Food Bank. This helped over 24,000 different Londoners. The food raised from the Curb Hunger Food Drive will be distributed through both the food bank and over 25 other programs and agencies. It will go far over the summer months in helping Londoners struggling to feed their families.

Jane Roy, Co-Executive Director London Food Bank

It is heartbreaking that in a country as prosperous as Canada there are people at risk of going without one of life’s basic necessities – food. Nearly 865,000 people in Canada and 336,000 in Ontario use food banks every year and, sadly, about one-third are children. For 22 years, the people of Labatt have worked with their fellow citizens to support the London Cares Food Drive. We’re pleased to be able to contribute and we encourage everyone to support the food drive and ensure that our fellow Londoners don’t go hungry.

Alex Martel, Senior General Manager, London Brewery Labatt Breweries of Canada
