Message from Jacki Taylor, CEOBecause of your generosity, this year Save the Family marks 30 years of service to homeless families in our community. Last year we helped 655 families secure and maintain their housing, escape domestic violence, learn life skills and budgeting, and enroll their children in enriching programs created specifically for at-risk youth. Thank you! Valor is already filled to capacity, further demonstrating the need for this new safe space for families. VETERAN FAMILIES EXPERIENCE SUCCESS WITH YOUR SUPPORT A soldier at heart, Timothy exemplifies the trait of personal courage. He put love of his country first by serving proudly in the United States Army, including completing two tours in Iraq, for five years before sustaining injuries. He was honorably discharged as a result and now struggles with cognitive function. A year ago, without a job, homeless, and with two young boys to take care of, Timothy came to Save the Family for help. Our Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program provides veteran families with short-term rental assistance, eviction prevention, supportive services, and referrals to many veteran serving organizations.

Once at Save the Family, SSVF staff helped Timothy with temporary housing while assisting him in getting connected with the local office of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to enroll in their HUD-VASH supportive housing program. The family was provided with warm clothes for the winter and donations secured through our Holiday Sponsorship Program helped them with a Thanksgiving basket. The family was also sponsored for Christmas. After a short time, his family was accepted into the HUD-VASH program and they eventually moved to permanent housing.

Timothy continues to stay in touch and always mentions how thankful he is for the outpouring of support and resources he and his sons received with they were here. He says that even though this was one of the most difficult and stressful situations for his family, the support he received enabled him to protect his children and save key moments in his son’s lives from the trauma of homelessness. With your continued investment, we can keep helping veteran families like Timothy’s. Now, instead of looking to the future with worry about how he will get through another night of homelessness with his sons, he looks to the future with anticipation about all the new wonderful memories he and his sons will create together.
