Here is an Interview with Dr. V. I. "Lucky" Lakshmanan, Founder and Chair of CIF Q. As a founding member, tell us about CIF and the purpose why it was established? Canada India Foundation is a national, non-profit, non-partisan organization established in 2007 to foster support for stronger relations between Canada and India; to educate Canadians on the changing face of India and to increase the participation of Indo-Canadians in the public policy process in Canada. CIF's founding members include entrepreneurs, senior Canadian busi- ness executives and top tier professionals. CIF plays a key role in Canada India relations through regular dialogues with repre- sentatives of both countries, organization of theme based policy forums and contributing, directly and through its members, to India-focused initia- tives at several academic institutions, in support of the target growth set by the two governments for bilateral trade from $5 billion to $15 bil- lion in five years. NEW POLICY ACCOMMODATING SIKH KIRPAN AT CANADIAN MISSIONS ABROAD On behalf of Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird, the Honourable Tim Uppal, Minister of State (Multiculturalism), announced a new policy on accommodating the Sikh kirpan at Canadian missions abroad. "Canada's diversity is one of our greatest strengths, and freedom of religion is a fundamental Canadian value," said Minister of State Uppal. "Our government's new kirpan policy will serve as an example and promote Canadian values around the world." "The accommodation of the kirpan at Canadian diplomatic missions around the world is a deeply significant move that shows that the Government of Canada understands and respects the significance of the kirpan to Sikhs," said Amritpal Singh Shergill, President of the World Sikh Organization of Canada. "Most importantly, this policy reflects the importance Canada places on human rights, including freedom of religion, and sets an example for the rest of world." The new policy provides clear guidance to missions on accommo- dating the Sikh kirpan, a stylized representation of a sword or dagger, while fulfilling the government's responsibility for ensuring the physi- cal security of employees at missions. A s per reports in PTI - Aam Aadmi Party supremo Arvind Kejriwal has secured the highest coverage in TV news during prime time, followed by BJP's Narendra Modi and Congress's Rahul Gandhi in early days of elections, according to a study. The study, by CMS Media Lab after analysing five top news channels, shows that while Kejriwal has received 429 minutes or 28.19 per cent of the time given during 8 to 10pm from March 1 to 15, BJP's prime minis- terial candidate has secured 356 minutes (23.98 per cent). The Gandhi family scion has received 72 minutes of coverage (4.76 per cent), followed by RJD's Lalu Prasad at 46 minutes (3.05 per cent) and MNS founder Raj Thackeray at 33 minutes (2.20 per cent), the study says about the news coverage of these top leaders. The channels used for the study were - Aaj Tak, ABP News, Zee News, NDTV 24X7 and CNN-IBN. "Rahul Gandhi has received 6 times and 5 five less coverage as compared to Kejriwal and Modi respectively ... The coverage demol- ished popular myth of 2014 Lok Sabha elections that Modi is media and media is Modi ... as Arvind Kejriwal toppled Narendra Modi in news coverage," CMS Media Lab said. JDU senior leader and Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar secured sixth slot with 2.01 per cent of news coverage, followed by TMC chief and West Bengal chief minis- ter Mamata Banerjee at seventh (1.67 per cent) and Samajwadi Party chairperson Mulayam Yadav at eighth rank (1.65 per cent). Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav received 24 minutes of news coverage during the said period to secure ninth slot while AAP leader Shazia Ilmi got 18 minutes to clinch the 10th spot, the study says. In terms of parties, BJP has emerged as the number one politi- cal outfit, beating AAP by a narrow margin. BJP got 369 minutes of TV news coverage, or more than one-third of the time cornered by the top 10 parties. Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party stood second with 345 minutes or 31.37 per cent share, followed by Congress at third rank with 193 minutes or 17.51 per cent share. SP secured fourth position, MNS fifth, Shiv Sena sixth, RJD seventh, TMC eighth, BSP ninth and DMK the 10th slot. RJD, TMC, BSP and DMK received less than 1.5 per cent of TV news coverage each, the data shows. In terms of issues/subjects of TV news coverage, "personality pro- files" emerged as the most covered, followed by "Hindutva", political party, development, corruption, public policy and governance, among others. "Interestingly, Hindutva is one of the top issues; this was expected after the announcement of Modi as PM candidate," says CMS Media Lab. CMS Media Lab says it has arrived at the figures based on coverage time given to election topics/subjects. Source - PTI SAVE MAX REAL ESTATE INC. I wear my personality: DeepikaPadukone hits back at Sonam

I AM VERY MUCHSINGLE, SAYSALIA BHATT

I’ll have an incredible marriage: Sushmita SenActor Alia Bhatt, who has been oftenlinked to her co-stars including ArjunKapoor of 2 States, says she is verymuch single. The 21-year-old actor was also roman-tically linked to her Student of the Yearco-star Varun Dhawan. The newbie in-sists she has still not found the manwhom she would want to be in a rela-tionship with."The most impor tant qualities I want inmy man is that he should be loyal andhonest. Coming from a family in whicheveryone has strong opinions, I don'twant a guy who will push me down,"Alia said.On work front, Alia will be seen next in2 States with Arjun and Humpty SharmaKi Dulhania with Varun.

A war of words has begun between Sonam Kapoor and Deepika Padukone. On a recent episode of KaranJohar’s chat show, the former took a dig at her rival’s fashion sense. And Deepika is not too happy aboutit. On the show, Sonam had mentioned that Anaita Shroff Adajania, Deepika’s stylist, deserved all thecredit for the actor’s fashion sense. "Deepika has upped her game, but it’s all thanks to Anaita. She hasdone a great job on her," said Sonam, and then went on to add, "She does not have her own style."Now, reacting for the first time, Deepika says, "I think she (Sonam) is entitled to an opinion and I respectit." But she does not stop there and goes on to define what style means to her. "Fashion, for me, is whatI believe in, what suits my personality, what suits my body type and what I can carry off. It is not whatpeople in the fashion world are dictating. It’s what I feel comfortable in. Wear your personality. It’s what Ihave said earlier as well," says Deepika. And while the Raanjhanaa (2013) actor praised Katrina Kaif’s style statement on the show, Deepika prefersKangana Ranaut amongst her contemporaries. She also has high regard for veteran actor Rekha’s style. She says, "I think Rekhaji is someone who has always dressed the way she wants. Fashion trends comeand go, but she stands by something she believes in and I appreciate that."

She is known to live life on her own terms and her joie de vivre is -contagious. Actor Sushmita Senlikes to love, and has no place for harbouring hate. In her signature style, she -dispels the reportedrivalry with actor Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, with whom she may share screen space in PrahladKakkar’s upcoming film.“I live my life loving people; not -loving is a waste of time and life,” she says, apart from a lot more.It has been long since we saw you on the big screen. Why have you been away?Yes, it has been quite -some time. I want these three years to come back. I want to do greatcinema. 2014 is my year ... I used to say this to people earlier, and now it is turning out to betrue. I am doing a few films and then I am -starting my own studio. Is marriage on your mind? Are you in love?It has been on my father’s mind more than mine. I will have an incredible marriage when Iknow I have found the right person. Do I love? Yes. Am I in love? No.Age does not seem to be -catching up with you...You have to love yourself and accept everything about -yourself. People reject things likeageing. But every -wrinkle, every line makes us who we are, those are what we have earned.Today, I am 38. Tomorrow I will be 40 and I will still celebrate myself ...After I ended up with a bad back 10 years ago, a young boy introduced me to the acrobaticconcept of aerial silk. It’s about training your mind before body. I took to it like a fish to water. How do you stay so positive? You become what inspires you. You should do what you like. If you want to be an actor, become one. I wanted to be famous, so that I could touch lives. I wanted to leave an impact that will stay long after I am gone and dusted. You just got your seventh tattoo.Earlier, I had my children’s name. My seventh tattoo is inspired by Kabbalah and it’s God’s name in Hebrew, Elohim. In English, it means “I am that I am”.

Modi’s commentbizarre, says JairamUnion Minister for Rural Development Jairam Ramesh hitout at the Bharatiya Janata Par ty’s prime ministerial candi-date Narendra Modi on Monday for twisting a statement hemade four years ago on the urgent need for sanitation.Mr. Modi had accused Mr. Ramesh at a rally in his homedistrict of Chikmagalur of insulting Mother India while abroadby describing India as the dir tiest and laziest country in theworld. Mr. Modi said, “He goes to a foreign land, eats food inhis aunty’s house and star ts abusing his mother [India].”In a letter to Mr. Modi, Mr. Ramesh recalled that what he hadsaid was, “India deserves a Nobel Prize for filth [and that]India has the largest number [and propor tion] of people prac-tising open defecation… India’s salvation lies in sanitationand not just in spirituality.” He also pointed out that Mr. Modihad endorsed this view in the past.“I know you make outrageous statements,” Mr. Ramesh haswritten, “However, even by your own standards, your accu-sation against me is bizarre. I have never said what youattribute to me… It is clear that even by mistake, you areclearly incapable of speaking the truth.”

PM was made a rubberstamp: JavadekarThe Bharatiya Janata Par ty on Monday accused the Con-gress of looting the country’s natural resources and said thecoal scam substantiated this charge. It said Congress president Sonia Gandhi owed an explana-tion to the country after two books written by eminent per-sonalities exposed the par ty’s corrupt practices in the allo-cation of coal blocks.Addressing a press conference here, BJP spokespersonPrakash Javadekar said the Congress denigrated constitu-tional bodies such as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI)and the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG).Ms. Gandhi did not allow the Prime Minister to function inde-pendently, reducing him to a mere rubber stamp, he alleged.Quoting senior journalist Sanjaya Baru from his book TheAccidental Prime Minister: The Making and Unmaking ofManmohan Singh, the BJP MP said: “Pr ime MinisterManmohan Singh is in office but not in power.” Not a singlecoal block allocation after 2004 was recommended by thePMO. No reason was given for granting allocations or reject-ing applications, he said.As pointed out by the former Coal Secretary, P.C. Parakh, inhis book released on Sunday, the CBI probe into the coalscam was superficial and a massive cover-up to let the UPAgovernment off the hook. “Every deal was a quid pro quoarrangement, as all the decisions were taken based on slipsreceived by the PMO from 10 Janpath,” Mr. Javadekar al-leged.Coal reserves to the tune of 17 billion tonnes were allotted to140 private companies without due diligence and makingcomparative appraisal. It allowed the companies to exploitthe resources wor th over Rs.50 lakh crore in return for mea-gre revenue. Stating that the BJP would make it an electionissue, Mr. Javadekar said the CBI did not make any attemptto get to the root of the scam. The then Union Minister of Statefor Coal Dasar i Narayana Rao had rejected the CoalSecretary’s repor t on coal blocks allocation when theMinistry’s charge was held by the Prime Minister himself.

Russia wants toset southeast 'on

Slavyasnk: Ukraine's Western-backed leader Tuesday accusedRussia of trying to enflame the country's southeast but said hewould proceed cautiously against pro-Kremlin militias consoli-dating control in the volatile region.Oleksandr Turchynov's impassioned charges against Ukraine'shistoric master came only hours after a "frank and direct" ex-change on the crisis between US President Barack Obama andhis Russian counterpar t Vladimir Putin. But the heated phone conversation appeared to break no newground as the Kremlin chief continued to reject any links to theRussian-speaking gunmen who have occupied town halls andpolice stations in nearly 10 cities across Ukraine's strugglingeastern rust belt since the star t of the month.European foreign ministers meanwhile held back on unleash-ing punishing economic sanctions against Russia in hopes thatEU-US mediated talks Thursday in Geneva between Moscowand Kiev could help deescalate the most explosive East-Weststandoff since the Cold War.But the pressure that the ex-Soviet state's interim leadersare feeling from Moscow is now also star ting to reverberatefrom their suppor ters in Kiev who had toppled a detestedpro-Kremlin regime in February after months of protests thatsought to link up Ukraine firmly to the West.Displeasure at Ukrainian forces' thus-far helpless effor ts toreasser t control and anxiety over their country's possiblebreakup saw several hundred nationalists set fire to tyresoutside the parliament building on Monday evening demand-ing the interior minister's resignation.Turchynov appeared to address that discontent today as hestressed that his "full-scale anti-terrorist operation" that aimsto dislodge the pro-Russian gunmen from their increasinglyentrenched positions must proceed "gradually, responsiblyand in a measured way".Turchynov told an agitated session of parliament that sawsome of his old protest suppor ters question his leadershipthat Ukraine was facing an eastern enemy rather than do-mestic discontent."Russia had and cont inues to have bruta l p lans," saidTurchynov."They want to set fire not only to the Donetsk region but to the entiresouth and east -- from Kharkiv to the Odessa region."He added that Donbass -- the informal name of the Donetsk regionthat is now the hotbed of Ukraine's latest wave of unrest -- had avast majority that was happy to be rid of the old leaders andbecome par t of a broader Europe.

The actress jokingly states that she cannot afford apublicist! She would prefer to get away to Goa where herfolks are based. Also, any questions about her alleged Australian boyfriendAndrew Kneebon are kept at bay. Currently, Ileana is not doingany South films and has completed Saif Ali Khan's productionHappy Ending which also stars the actor.

But this timewith "Bhootnath Returns",Nitesh Tiwari has tried to slightlydeviate from the abovementioned, tried and testedformula and instead of an AamAadmi has brought in the Bhootof an "Aam Aadmi" to uproot theanomalies of crooked politicalstructure.

It's a set trend now to mark theonset of sequels from the pointwhere the previous edition of themovie marks its culmination, sois the case with "BhootnathReturns". As the premise of"Bhootnath Returns" unfurls itshowcases the return of KailashNath aka Bhootnath (AmitabhBachchan) in the red tapismridden Bhoot World. But onreaching there our lovableBhootnath finds that, he hasturned into a butt of jokes for hisfellow ghosts, because of hisinability to scare a young kid (as

shown in the prequel). Aftertaking this humiliation of a sorton face Bhootnath decides toliberate himself from thisderision and returns back tomaterialistic world to scare thekids. But soon after his arrivalhe realizes that scaring theyounger generation is as toughas cracking metal beans withone's jaws. While searching for

some easy prey he becomes thefriend of a bold slum kid Akhrot(Parth), the only person who cansee him. With frames rollingahead the steps in the corruptlocal leader Bhau ( Boman Irani),with whom Bhootnath andAkhrot lock horns. And onAkhrot's insistence Bhootnathfiles a nomination in upcomingelection in order to impose apause on Bhau's corruptpractices. So what follows next?does Bhootnath returns to BhootWorld or is it Bhau who losesthe battle to know watch,"Bhootnath Returns". As far asstory-line of "BhootnathReturns" is concerned then Idon't have any qualms in sayingthat it's not a mandate that if anycine idea has a mesmerizingonset or a captivating prequel, then it is bound to have apleasing culmination and sequeltoo. With a somewhat novel ideain his hand certainly, Nitesh hastried to refrain from theconventional idea of storytellingwhich such kind of cine flicksusually have. But this attempt ofhis of keeping everythinguncomplicated has adversely

effected the influencing potencyof the movie. Probably thebehind this exercise of keepingintricacies at bay was to targetthe youngest lot of viewers, buteven this perspective of"Bhootnath Returns"boomerangs for the plot, ultimately making it a somewhatover-preachy and demotic affairthat too while being too complexto comprehend even by itstargate audience. Undoubtedlywhen Bhootnath returns marksits onset it gives you a flickerthat, either it is going to be ahilarious joy ride or at least awarm and mesmerizing cine taledecorated with propitiatingemotional value. But contrary toyour expectations after taking offwith entrancing magnificenceand maintaining an enticingcharm especially in the first halfthe premise of "BhootnathReturns" nosedives into thequagmire of melodrama, whilebeing didactic about relevance

of voting and common man'scontribution to democracy ( aphenomenon too distant foryoung kids to comprehend).Although storyline of"Bhootnath Returns" isthoroughly novel with arighteous message tocommunicate underneath it, butin the dearth of some relevantaromas like hilarity coefficientand concrete socio-politicalmessage to communicate (whichmaker intended to) it flunks inattaining what it premeditated to.In nutshell despite having agroundbreaking premise andpresence of acting icon like BigB Bhootnath Returns in leavingan enthralling impact on theviewers. Even in the screenplaydepartment "BhootnathReturns" looks no less than a sincommitted by its creators. Thoughthe team of screenplay artisans of"Bhootnath Returns" led by Niteshhave not left any stone unturnedin creating a an authentic milieuto attest the credibility ofonscreen proceedings, but at thesame time they forgot to plug thein going vent to prevent theintrusion of melodrama.

Cosy Instagram photos, kissing on-stage or sitting on each others'laps at promotional events, the new breed of actors have been seenindulging in public display of affection (PDA) during their film promo-tions. Alia Bhatt has posted lovey-dovey photos of her co-star ArjunKapoor and herself, as their film 2 States is set to release next week,in which they play husband and wife. While promoting the recently-released Main Tera Hero, Varun Dhawan was seen sitting on his co-star Nargis Fakri's lap at several events. In fact, Nargis was quotedas saying, "I find it hilarious that Varun is always caught sitting on mylap!" So, is taking the PDA route to promote their films a new tool, ordo the actors really get close to each other while working together?Ad guru Prahlad Kakar says it’s a purely strategic way of promotingfilms. "Yes, these lovey- dovey gestures are part of the marketingstrategies that have been planned to promote the film," hesays.Agrees trade analyst Atul Mohan, who says, "Promotionsare always targeted at a certain section of the society. If it is a filmshot in college, then they promote it at places where youngstershang out. Similarly, if it’s a love story, indulging in a little PDA helps tohook the target audience."

BUT WHY?Most Bollywooders won't be inMumbai on election day

With the Lok Sabha elections less than a month away, many starshave been appealing to the public to step out and vote. Be it on socialmedia or at social events, several celebrities have been talking aboutsocial evils and political apathy. Interestingly though, most stars willnot even be in Mumbai on voting day as it clashes with an awardsfunction that is being held in Florida, USA.So while on one hand, a record number of Bollywood personalitiesare contesting elections this year - including the likes of Hema Malini,Kirron Kher, Gul Panag, Nagma and Jaaved Jaaferi - a legion of celebsfrom the industry will be far away from ground zero. It seems that theawards function had announced its dates much before the electiondates were out and as a result, most celebs had chalked out theiritineraries accordingly. Then there are some who will be busy shoot-ing outside Mumbai and will thus not be able to vote.HITLIST GIVES YOU THE LOWDOWN ON WHO IS LIKELY TO GET INKON THEIR FINGER.KEEPING THEIR DATE WITH ELECTIONSAamir Khan: The actor will ensure that he is in the city on electionday. He asked people to cast their vote on the finale of his showSatyamev Jayate, and it is a given that the actor will exercise his rightto vote.Amitabh Bachchan: Big B and his entire family, including wife Jaya, son Abhishek, and daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai, never fail to casttheir vote. This year too, they plan to do so.Ranbir Kapoor: The actor is shooting for his film, Bombay Velvet, andhe is not expected to fly out of Mumbai as of now. It is being said thatafter finishing his shoot, he will cast his vote.Riteish Deshmukh: Hailing from a political family, the actor is onlytoo aware of the importance of voting. He will be voting on April 17from his native place, Latur, where his elder brother Amit is contest-ing elections. He will then fly out of town the same night. SonamKapoor: The actress confirms that not only will she be in the city onelection day, but she will also cast her vote.Missing in Action

WITH ELECTION DAY FAST APPROACHING,WE FIND OUT WHO IN BOLLYWOOD WILLBE IN THE CITY TO CAST THEIR VOTE‘

Salman Khan: The actor has been campaigning - although indirectly -for his friend, Priya Dutt, for quite some time now. Some time back,he drew flak for being seen with BJP's Narendra Modi during thepromotions for his film, Jai Ho. Now it turns out that he will not be inthe country on election day. He will be in Poland for a film shoot.

Deepika Padukone: The actress is flying to US to take par t in anaward ceremony, which is taking place on April 26. Since she islikely to perform at the function, she will be reaching the venue a fewdays before the gala. Owing to this, she won't be in Mumbai on elec-tion day.Priyanka Chopra: Priyanka has been shooting for her film in Manaliand is expected to return soon to Mumbai. But she too has beeninvited to the awards function in the US and is thus likely to note votethis year.

Kareena Kapoor: Saif Ali Khan: The couple won't be shooting for theirfilms on election day, but they are taking par t in the said award cer-emony in the US.Farhan Akhtar: Much like Javed Akhtar and Shabana Azmi, Farhanhas never hesitated to support a social cause, nor does he shy awayfrom expressing his opinion on any issue. However, he is likely to beout of country on voting day.Vivek Oberoi: Vivek has been campaigning for his mother-in-law,Nandini Alva, who is contesting elections from Bangalore Central forJanata Dal Secular. But he won't be in India on election day as he islikely to fly to US for the same awards function.

Sonakshi Sinha: The actress has already made it clear that she won'tbe campaigning for her father Shatrughan Sinha, who is contesting elections in aPatna constituency. But now it looks like Sona, who is expected to win an award inthe US, won't even be in town to cast her vote.Other actors and actresses who are travelling to the US and may thus miss out ontheir right to vote include Parineeti Chopra, Madhuri Dixit-Nene, Shahid Kapoor,Bipasha Basu, Dia Mirza, Neil Nitin Mukesh and Vaani Kapoor.Ayushmann Khurrana: The actor will be in Hrishikesh on election day,as he is shooting for his upcoming film, Dum Laga Ke Haisha.Arjun Kapoor: The actor will be in India during elections but since he is busypromoting his upcoming film, 2 States, he won't be in Mumbai then. To add to it, heis yet to finish shooting for the film, Tevar, in North India.Anushka Sharma: The actress is in Jodhpur for one and half months toshoot for her debut production, NH 10. This means that she will havecome down to Mumbai to just cast her vote or wait another five years.

KATE MIDDLETON, THE DUCHESS OF CAMBRIDGE, SHOWSOFF HER BATTING SKILLS IN CHRISTCHURCH DURING THECOUNTDOWN TO THE 2015 WORLD CUP

Pakistan's conditional suppor t for the ICC revamp hinges on thepromise of six series against India, including a 'home' series inthe Middle East as par t of an upcoming, reworked eight-year

FTP cycle from 2015 to 2023, ESPNcricinfo has learnt. The change in the PCB's stance has taken place on the condition thatPakistan would be involved in bilateral series against all Full Mem-bers, including India. If Indo-Pak series are officially slotted into theeight-year FTP, it could also involve a 'home' series for Pakistan againstIndia in the United Arab Emirates. The PCB is now waiting for a final confirmation from the BCCI follow-ing its Working Committee meeting, which the PCB have been in-formed, is expected to take place in the next 15 days. It will thenenable the PCB to work out a long-term broadcasting deal with regu-lar India series at its centre. The PCB's opposition to the ICC's original position paper that recom-mended a remodeling of the ICC's administrative structure and itsrevenue distribution rested on the argument that it was against theprinciple of "equality." However, following cer tain changes in the reso-lutions, as well as the possibility of playing India frequently led PCBto support the governance, finance and FTP changes in the ICC, whichwas driven entirely by the BCCI, ECB and Cricket Australia.ESPNcricinfo understands that all the nine member boards have con-

firmed their earlier commitments with PCB until 2020 and are chalk-ing out a fresh plan for the period from 2020 to 2023.The BCCI could look to slot in as many as six series against Pakistan, due to the gaps that are available in the existing FTP calendar. Thefirst of these bilateral series could take place in the UAE in the winterof 2015. "Cricket between both countries is beneficial as the Pakistangovernment is also keen to revive ties with India on a high note," PCBchairman Najam Sethi said on Friday following the two-day ICC boardmeeting in Dubai.India and Pakistan have not played a full series since the 2008 terrorattacks in Mumbai, which India blamed on militants based across theborder. However, Pakistan visited India for a shor t limited-over se-ries in December 2012, but despite not getting any revenue out of theseries, it was regarded as a stepping stone in reviving cricketing tiesbetween both countries.Since July 2013, Pakistan have been without a long-term broadcast-ing deal, one of the major sources of income for the PCB. The PCBalready had to deal with a long-standing budget-deficit, which in Au-gust 2013, was calculated at nearly PKR 500 million. The PCB esti-mates that after committing to the ICC revamp, the financial benefitscould reach PKR 30 billion from the bilateral ties, the major chunk ofwhich will be earned from hosting India.

BIG RUNSEXPECTED, WITHBAT AND BALL

2013 FINISHFifth, for the second year running. Theywere runners-up in 2009 and 2011.BIG PICTURERoyal Challengers Bangalore will enterIPL 7 having in their ranks two of themost talked-about Indian players fromthe last couple of weeks - that is, talkedabout for completely different reasons. On one hand, there isVirat Kohli, arguably the in-from batsman in international cricket. The force behind India's charge to the World T20 final, collect-ing a tournament record 319 runs with four fifties from sixmatches at 106.33. The team's watchful protector and DarkKnight. And then there is Yuvraj Singh, painted - perhaps unfairly - asthe villain for sucking the momentum out of India's innings inthe final with a laboured knock of 11.What will worry the Royal Challengers fans more than the Rs14 crore (US$ 2.33 million) it cost the franchise to secureYuvraj's services, is just how lost the allrounder looked notonly during his 21-ball struggle in Mirpur, but also in a majorityof his innings since returning to the Indian fold last year.Still, while an on-song Yuvraj will be more than welcome, his formwith the bat should not hurt the Royal Challengers too much, as they boastperhaps the most explosive line-up in the tournament, with the addedexperience of Albie Morkel to provide a late surge down the order.Their main concern, once again, is the fast bowling. Australia's MitchellStarc and West Indies' Ravi Rampaul are quality performers but only oneof the overseas slots is likely to be available for the two of them. The Indianquick bowlers inspire lesser confidence: Ashok Dinda leaked 9.48 runsper over last season, Varun Aaron is yet to combine precision to hisundoubted pace, while Abu Nechim and Harshal Patel are yet to provethemselves in the IPL.BIG PLAYERSChris Gayle may not have set the World T20 on fire, perhaps being remem-bered only for his ferocious rendition of Gangnam Style after beating Aus-tralia, but his IPL pedigree is never in question. Pune Warriors will attest tothat.A 28-ball 69 against England aside, AB de Villiers also had a quiet outing inBangladesh. However, he has been outstanding as a finisher for RoyalChallengers. With Morkel also in the team, de Villiers might be pushed upthe order this year to provide an early onslaught.BARGAIN BUYLegspinner Yuzvendra Chahal has a career economy rate of 5.59 in Twenty20cricket, which is among the best in the world. He was with MumbaiIndians since 2011, contributing to their 2011 Champions League win withan incisive spell of 2 for 9 in the final, but the presence of Harbhajan Singhand Pragyan Ojha in the team meant that his appearances for thefranchise were limited. Bought for a modest (by IPL standards)Rs 10 lakh, Chahal could well lead Royal Challengers spinattack this season.AVAILABILITYRoyal Challengers have a fully fit squad to choose from.QUOTE"I want to be the best in death-over bowling. I have practised alot in the nets and sweated it out for many hours just to bowl inthe last overs of the match."Ashok Dinda

2013 FINISH: SeventhA year after winning the trophy - in 2012, Kolkata Knight Riders had anabysmal dip in for tune with the same line-up. No wonder then thatwhen it came to retaining players, they only held onto Gautam Gambhir, their captain, and Sunil Narine, their most valuable player. The auc-tion was a chance to redesign the team, cure the known deficiencies, but like other teams who have tasted success in the past, KnightRiders too made sure they were not wiping the slate clean. They threw in their right-to-match cards to pull in Yusuf Pathan andJacques Kallis, two players on which they have heavily invested inthe past, but more impor tantly covered a couple of impor tant weak-nesses; a middle order that lacked gir th to take the weight of the toporder and a mediocre pace-attack lacking survival skills on pattapitches. Only time will tell if the money was spent wisely but onpaper, Robin Uthappa and Manish Pandey do add much needed spunkto the batting order that relies heavily on the trio of Gambhir, Kallisand Yusuf.

Knight Riders strength though remains in the variety of their spinners.Narine will have the suppor t of a wily legspinner in Piyush Chawla, asmar t left-armer in Shakib Al Hasan and a rare breed - a chinamanbowler in Kuldeep Yadav. Cricketing bases covered, they have alsohired explorer Mike Horn to add steel to their approach. The onlyapparent weakness in this line-up seems to be the inconsistencywithin.BIG PLAYERSIgnore his strike rate of 105.53, the value Jacques Kallis brings toKnight Riders is immense. He has been their second-highest run-scorer and also their second-highest wicket-taker. Along with Gambhir,Kallis is the load-bearing member. After scoring more than 400 runsin two consecutive seasons, Kallis' form took a dip and it reflected inthe team's results. This time, though, he will be in fresh after havinghardly taken to the field since his retirement and will be needed morefor his batting than the bowling. He was the star of the 2008 season, but Yusuf Pathan's stocks havenever really hit those pre-credit crunch era highs again. Gambhir, inthe past three seasons, has been vocal in his suppor t despite Yusufmanaging a solitary half-century in 43 innings for Knight Riders. Incontrast, he had four half-centuries in the opening season itself. But,Knight Riders continue to show faith and if the Yusuf's form in thedomestic matches leading up to the IPL is any indicator, that trustmight not be misplaced.BARGAIN BUYAt 1 crore or $166,000, Knight Riders managed to lay their hands onPat Cummins, the young Australian fast bowler. Raw pace is a rarecommodity in the IPL and usually attracts the buyers, but Cummins'patchy fitness record may have worked in favour of Knight Riders. Ifhe can hold his body together, he will ruffle some batsmen.
