Saul BassBy Laurena Etwi
Who is he?
• May 8, 1920 – April 25, 1996
• American graphic designer and Academy award winning film maker
• Greatest work- motion picture title sequences design, corporate logos and film posters
His posters
• Saul Bass’ used simple shapes and images on his posters and titles to help capture the mood of a film
• This differs from the usual photo of celebrities on posters
• Highly inspired and influenced by Bauhaus & Russian constructivism who created work that encouraged the viewer to be active
How did he influence others
• His work inspired many to see Movie Title sequences and posters rather as a form of art
Mainly due to his known movie title sequences such as:
• “It’s a mad mad mad mad world”
• “The man with the golden arm”
And also posters for movies such as:
• “Precious”
• “The shining”
Did it influence me?
I decided to look at Saul Bass’ work as I found that he broke conventions of known and existing film sequences and movie title sequences. This is something I would like to try and further develop, however this is just an idea and I am not certain that this will suit my own work.
