RODERICK WOOD, DVM Wagging Tales is a quarterly newsletter published by the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast, Inc., which is a not-for-profit corporation that has acted as the exclusive provider of companion animal sheltering and protection services in Martin County, FL for more than 50 years.

Dear Friends of HSTC,Volunteering. To be of service. Giving freely with commitment to a cause.

We are so grateful to all of our volunteers and supporters that have given the gift of time and resources to our humane society.

The daily impact of our volunteers is evident in every aspect of our shelter operation.

With record adoptions, spay/neuter surgeries, pet therapy visits to schools and senior living communities, thrift store revenues and special event attendance, our volunteers are key contributors to our growth each year.

We have more people volunteering for HSTC than any time in our history, with over 100,000 hours of volunteer time donated to HSTC in 2013!

We could not accomplish our goals without your support and the commitment of our dedicated volunteers. To all of our loyal volunteers thank you for making a difference every day for the animals in our care.

We also appreciate your suggestions and feedback. Suggestions from concerned volunteers that truly care about our mission have led to improved use of social media, dog-walking and cat care programs, new thrift store procedures, expansion of our offsite adoption program (which is now also setting new records!) and so much more.

Gandhi said “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service to others.”

The poet Tagore wrote “I slept and dreamt that life was a joy. I awoke and saw that life was service. I acted, and behold, service was joy.”

It is amazing what we receive when we freely give of ourselves.

We appreciate all of our volunteers who freely offer their time, resources and ideas, and the way you work with our staff to make our shelter the special place it is.

WITH GREAT APPRECIATION,

FRANK VALENTEPRESIDENT, CEO

Our volunteer dog-walkers have lots of fun treating our shelter dogs to much-appreciated leash walks.

The volunteers make good friends, like our Monday morning group, give back to their community and get some healthy exercise themselves! Consider joining us.

GIVE A LITTLE; GET A LOT!

The Humane Society of the Treasure Coast is pleased to recognize Mary Beth Taylor for 25

years of service to the animals in our

care.

Mary Beth has been part of the growth of our humane

society and has been instrumental in the transition of our humane society from our previous home on Dixie Highway to our full service shelter in Palm City.

Mary Beth has grown over the years into her current role as Animal Care Manager. For years Mary Beth was responsible for overseeing the staff providing the day to day care of all animals

that enter our shelter. This includes medical exams, proper diet and exercise, medical treatments, fostering and preparation for the adoption program. She has trained supervisors, vet techs and new managers and her role now includes managing purchasing and inventory for the shelter.

In honor of her service, the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast will be planting a tree and placing a plaque in the Audrey Faust Memorial Garden at the shelter to commemorate this milestone and her years of service to animals in need.

“We are very pleased to be able to recognize Mary Beth and her dedication to helping all animals that are lost, abandoned or forgotten,” said HSTC President and CEO Frank Valente. “By reaching 25 years of service with HSTC Mary Beth has accomplished something that is very rare in the animal welfare world, working for 25 years with the same organization. We are very grateful to Mary Beth for her contributions over the years, and we wish her continued success as a member of the HSTC family.”

More than 240 guests, volunteers and supporters — including a host of creatively costumed characters — attended the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast’s “Paws and Claws Ali Baba & the Furry Thieves Gala.” The HSTC’s biggest fundraising event, which was held at the Elliott Museum, raised more than $210,000.

“The transformation of the Elliott Museum by our committee to our Ali Baba & the Furry Thieves theme was breathtaking and

completely enhanced the overall atmosphere of the event,” said HSTC Community Events Manager Jayme Uteschill.

Gifts of $10,000 each from Betty Lahti, Lydia Barnes and Malcolm Hughes kicked off the donation drive for the expansion of the shelter’s dog adoption and play areas, which includes increasing the large and medium dog adoption kennels. Grassy, shaded areas for the dogs, where they will exercise and play, also will be added.

A special thank you goes to both volunteers and sponsors, who helped make the event a resounding success. Volunteers Bob and Maryellen Castellano co-chaired the event and received plenty of help from committee members Alexandra Owen, Dana Coates, Marilyn Morris, Beverly Mauermann, Karen Spriggs, Jamie Bierds, Kay Ziegler, Starr Boniface, Vicki Brown, Dixie Church, Lori DesRuisseaux, Carol Dippy, Graham Doerge, Cindy Greenspan, Blue Hoyt, Allola McGraw, Carol Plato, Drue Pollack, Kathy Skrzypczak, Sandy Jevany, Carol Silcox and Karen Viener.

In keeping with the theme, guests were treated to a belly dancing show along with cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and dinner. The bidding was heavy in the silent and live auctions, which included an impressive array of items in popular categories including trips, golf outings at exclusive clubs, unique jewelry and art, spa packages and much more. Dancing to the Party Dogs band rounded out the event.
