FDNY Lt. Joseph Gullickson of Ladder 101 sacrificed his life while saving the lives of others on September 11, 2001 at the WTC. Joseph was a firefighter for fourteen years and was well respected among his fellow firefighters. Captain Tom Giordano said, “Joe was an exceptional officer, always learning, always teaching, and, above all, always looking out for his men. This was a man dedicated to his job and totally devoted to his family. I am proud to call Joe a brother, a hero, a friend.”

The Maverick Foundation is a privately run and managed non-profit organization that was established in 2002 to empower well-rounded graduating 8th graders who lead by example, possess the determination to reach their full potential, and have the desire to help others. We currently offer four scholarships that require recipients to enroll in the Congressional Award Program and achieve their prestigious Gold Medal before graduating from high school. This requires 400 hour of volunteer work, 200 hours of personal development, 200 hour of physical activity, and numerous expedition/exploration trips. We offer the “Gullickson McGuire Scholarship” to Moore Catholic HS, the “Terry Sweeny Scholarship” to Saint Peter’s HS, the “Bill Hodge Scholarship” for an 8th grader committed to a track and field career in a Catholic HS on Staten Island, and the “Jim Boylan Scholarship” to the 8th grade son or daughter of a NYC firefighter attending a Catholic HS on Staten Island.
