A trip to Dubai to prepare for the Kentucky Derby

(gr. I) has been confirmed for Reddam Racing's

promising 3-year-old Frank Conversation.

While trainer Doug O'Neill and owner Paul Reddam

are deciding whether to run their undefeated champi-

on Nyquist in the Santa Anita Derby or Florida Derby

(both gr. I), they have decided Frank Conversation,

the El Camino Real Derby (gr. III) and California Derby

winner, will contest the March 26 UAE Derby (UAE-I).

With both colts targeting the Kentucky Derby, it is

understandable that the connections want to keep

the two on separate paths. But the Dubai race is a

most unusual choice.

"It's not a traditional route to the Derby," Reddam

said. "But it's six weeks between races, it's $2 million,

and I can send my rider (Mario Gutierrez) over there

because it's an off week. The horse is 5-1 with the

English bookmakers, which tells you he's live.

"If we didn't have Nyquist, we wouldn't be taking

Frank Conversation over there."

Frank Conversation (Quality Road—Rushen Heat,

by Unusual Heat), whose two derby wins came on syn-

thetic surfaces, will be running on dirt in Dubai. BH

PLANS FOR SUNLAND PARK TO RESUME RACINGBy Ron Mitchell

Believing the worst of the equine herpesvirus out-

break which has kept Sunland Park closed since

Jan. 22 is over, the New Mexico track took entries

Feb. 19 in order to tentatively resume racing Feb. 26.

So far, 72 of the approximately 1,500 horses sta-

bled at Sunland Park, along with two others in Texas,

have tested positive for the disease. Six horses were

euthanized due to the effects of EHV-1, which causes

upper respiratory infection and can also cause neu-

rological disease.

Barns in which EHV-1 positive horses resided were

placed in quarantine; so far 17 barns have been re-

moved from the isolation list. Once racing resumes,

only horses from barns not under quarantine will be

permitted to participate; no outside horses will be

accepted at the track for the time being.

During the New Mexico Racing Commission"s

special meeting Feb. 17 to discuss the outbreak and

plan to resume racing, Sunland Park racing director

Dustin Dix said the key to keeping the disease under

control was containment.

"That's where everything got away from us," Dix

said, according to the Associated Press, "This wasn't

contained at the outset." BH

FULL BROTHER TO UNTAPABLE SET FOR DEBUTBy Frank Angst

Broodmare Fun House could begin to add another

successful chapter Feb. 20 when her son Tap-

rize is scheduled to debut in the third race at Fair

Grounds Race Course & Slots.

Winchell Thoroughbreds homebred Taprize

(Tapit), is a full brother to 2014 champion 3-year-old

filly Untapable and half brother to grade I winner and

young sire Paddy O'Prado.

With an expected field of eight in the six-furlong

maiden race for 3-year-olds, Taprize drew the rail

for his racing debut. Listed at 9-2 morning-line, he

has worked four times since Jan. 19 for trainer Steve

Asmussen, including a five-furlong move in 1:01 4/5

Feb. 2 at Sam Houston Race Park, second-fastest of

23 at the distance.

Untapable completed her third workout since Jan.

28 when breezing five furlongs in 1:01 4/5 at Fair

Grounds Feb.18 as she prepares for her 5-year-old

debut. Untapable closed 2015 with a runner-up finish

in the Spinster Stakes (gr. I) Oct. 4 at Keeneland. BH

FOREVER DARLING'S LONG TRIP TO AVOID SONGBIRDBy Alastair Bull

Trainer Richard Baltas has a good reason for send-

ing Forever Darling from the West Coast to Loui-

siana for the Feb. 20 Rachel Alexandra (gr. II) rather

than staying at home.

"There's a horse out here called Songbird, and I'd

like to avoid her," Baltas said.

Katsumi Yoshida's Forever Darling, the sole out-of-

town horse contesting the Rachel Alexandra, is seventh

on the Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) leaderboard. Eighth behind

Songbird in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr. I), she

has since won the Santa Ynez Stakes (gr. II) Jan. 2.

She is one of two Congrats horses in the race, the

other being Venus Valentine. Their sire has shown a

remarkable bias toward fillies in his stud record—of

his 24 stakes winners, 20 are fillies, including the best

3-year-old filly in Dubai, Polar River.

Forever Darling is the second morning-line pick at

7-2. Favored at 7-5 is Silverbulletday winner Stage-

play, who along with the undefeated Tapit filly Royal

Obsession, provides Rachel Alexandra's trainer Steve

Asmussen with a strong hand. BH

program funded by the 6% state sales tax on stallion

fees.

According to KTBIF statistics, 9,517 mares were

nominated last year, up from 8,947 in 2014 and

8,386 in 2013. The 2015 figure is the highest since

9,968 in 2009.

Under the program, mares are required to board

in Kentucky during their entire gestation, and the re-

sulting foals are eligible for breeders' awards based

on their eventual earnings at the racetrack.

Officials said in 2015, eligible horses won 260 U.S.

graded stakes and 31 group races in four other coun-

tries under the program that paid more than $10.5

million. For the first time, Darley topped the KTBIF

list with awards in excess of $260,000 with 91 wins,

including three at Kentucky racetracks.

Thoroughbreds received 80% of the overall

Kentucky Breeders' Incentive Fund; Standardbreds

get 13% and all other breeds 7%. The Thoroughbred

awards total for 2015 is up from $10.3 million the

previous year. BH

KEENELAND, NYRA PLAN ALL STAKES PICK 4

On one of the biggest race days this spring,

Pick 4 bettors will have the chance to play

a wager that bundles four major stakes races at

two different tracks.

The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission on

Feb. 19 approved plans to allow Keeneland and

NYRA to offer a Pick 4 wager that will tie the Blue

Grass (gr. I) and Ashland (gr. I) at Keeneland with

the Wood Memorial (gr. I) and one other stakes

at Aqueduct Racetrack April 9.

The wager will be similar to the National Pick

4 wager first offered in 2005 that tied together

stakes at Oaklawn Park and Keeneland.

Kentucky will host the wagering pool for the

as yet unnamed Keeneland-Aqueduct wager.

Players will benefit from Keeneland's lower Pick

4 takeout of 19%, compared to NYRA's 24%.

Also, the Lexington track features lower host

fees, which could motivate outlets offering the

wager to highlight it to bettors.

In an age of simulcasting and advance-depos-

it wagering, it would seem like such multi-track

wagers stand a better chance of catching on,

although few have stood the test of time. Still,

giving horseplayers a chance to wager on four

of the day's top races is attractive and has few

drawbacks. Both tracks will continue to offer

their usual menu of Pick 4 wagers.

A few weeks ago this column documented

the lack of all-stakes Pick 4 wagers at tracks like

Gulfstream Park and Fair Grounds Race Course

& Slots. This winter those tracks have featured

days where they carded at least four stakes but

didn't offer a Pick 4 wager that allowed players

to handicap only stakes races.

Fair Grounds officials at that time said they

were hopeful of offering an all-stakes Pick 4 wa-

ger on Risen Star day, a goal that came together.

The Feb. 20 Fair Grounds card will offer a Pick 4

on the Daisy Devine, Rachel Alexandra (gr. II), Fair

Grounds Handicap (gr. III), and Risen Star (gr. II).

Field sizes and too many Pick 4 pools factor

into the equation, but giving Pick 4 bettors a

chance to focus on the top races seems like a

no-brainer. People like seeing—and betting—

the best a sport has to offer. There's a reason

the Super Bowl handles more action than a

late-September NFL game. BH
