Abstract:BantenLama(OldBanten)asoneofthemostprominentIslamicsitesinIndonesiahasalonghistory.Datedbackin1596whentheDutchfirstcametoBanten,thissitewaswell-knownasanessentialport,itsspicesproducts,aswellastheSultanateanditspower.Today,withoutanypromotions,therearenumeroustouristscameduringparticulardaysinIslamicdatesystemtodosomereligiousactivities.However,inthelasttwoyears,therewasaconsiderationtocreateazoningplanforBantenLamabythelocalAgencyforRegionalDevelopment.

Abstract:ThereturnofIndigenoushumanremainsandsecret-sacreditemsfromoverseasmuseumshaslongbeenattemptedbyAustraliasincetheyweretaken,supposedlyforresearch,inthe19thandearly20thcentury.Variousgovernmentprograms,nowwiththeNationalMuseumofAustraliainvolvement,havehadsomesuccessasincreasinglymuseumsseetheethicsofreturningtheseremainstothedescendants.
ThispaperpresentsarecentcasestudyofthereturnofhumanremainsfromoverseastovariouscommunitiesinNSWandQueensland.ItparticularlyrelatestheinvolvementofmyClarenceRiverDistrictAboriginalCommunityandmyexperiencesoftheprocessinAustraliaandinGermany.

Abstract:In1814,IvanAndreevichKrylov(1769-1844),poetandfabulist,wroteafableentitled"TheInquisitiveMan"whichtellsofamanwhogoestoamuseumandnoticesallsortsoftinythings,butfailstonoticeanelephant.TheelephantintheroomhasbecomeanEnglish-languagemetaphoricalidiomforanobviousproblemorriskthatnoonewantstodiscuss,oraconditionofgroupthinkthatnoonewantstochallenge.So,itappearsintheheritagesectortoday,acriticaldeclineinthequalityandsustainabilityofheritageoutcomesseemstogounnoticedmymany.Eachyearthenumberofpractisingheritageprofessionalsgrowsandthefinancialresourcesdedicatedtoheritageworksincreaseswhilethestandardofworkstoheritageplacesdeclines.Thereasonsareplaintosee.Theyincludeanunhealthyfocusonpredictiveprocessesandaneglectofmonitoringandself-improvementinthedeliveryofoutcomes.
Thebarrierstochangearewellunderstoodbythosewhohavelookedcloselyatthesituation.Theyincludetheconservationcommunitytalkingonlytoitself;alackofjoined-upthinkingbetweenheritage,conservation,educationandemploymentdepartmentsinGovernment;alackofindustryownershipofqualityproblems;alackofstrategicforesightandplanning;alackofcoordinationofskillstrainingdelivery;nospecialisttrackfortrainingintraditionalcraftsandtrades,andafailuretomaintaincommunityengagement.
Thispaperreportsonwaysandmeanstoovercomethebarrierstoqualityandsustainabilityandcurrenteffortstoarrestthedeclineinawarenessandcompetency.

Abstract:TheEmbassyofSwedenwascompletedin1951andrecognisedforitsmodernitybyreceivingtheSirJohnSulmanAwardforPublicandMonumentalBuildingsin1952.DesignedbynotableSwedisharchitectE.G.HLundquistinassociationwithAustralianarchitects,PeddleThorpandWalker,thebuildingrepresentedthecultureandnationalidentityofSwedenthroughitsarchitecturalstyleandmaterial.TheEmbassytothisdaystandsrepresentativeofthecollaborationandcooperationbetweenthenationsofSwedenandAustralia.
After60yearsofserviceitwasclearthattheEmbassybuildingrequiredathoroughrenovation,incorporatingmodernrequirementsofsecurityandworkplaceamenityaswellasaccommodatingcontemporarymodesofliving.WorkingwiththeNationalPropertyBoardSweden,GuidaMoseleyBrownArchitectsundertookthissignificantproject.
Throughthisprocesstheyuncoveredalayeredhistoryofstoriesandpersonalaccountsofthebuildingandthepeoplethathaveoccupieditembodiedwithinthephysicalmaterialsofthebuildingsandthegrounds.Thisfaithfulrestorationandmodernisationsoughttobringtogethertherichhistoryofthebuildingwithitscontemporaryrequirementsinaseamlessmannerthatallowsthebuildingtocontinueitsstoryforanotherlifetime.

Abstract:TheessenceoftheAustralianWarMemorialasanationalshrine,commemoratingthesacrificeofAustralianswhodiedinwar,existswithinthesacredspacesofitsCommemorativeArea.Completedin1941,theArea’sfabricandconstructionembodykeyartistic,historic,social,andtechnicalheritageattributes.Fromtheperspectiveofpreservingitsheritagesignificance,ithasalowtoleranceforchange.
TheCommemorativeAreaisahighlyvisiblepublicarenawherenationalandinternationaldignitaries,politicians,andvisitorsparticipatedailyinpublicandprivateactsofcommemorationandreflection.FromtheperspectiveofpreservingtheMemorial’spoliticalandsocialimportance,theAreahasalowtolerancefordisruption.
TheneedtoreconstructtheArea’sheritageelementstomaintain,protect,andconservetheirsignificanceandheritagevalueswasdocumentedin1997,reiteratedbysuccessiveconservationexperts,andstressedasurgentlyrequiredbytheMemorial’s2011HeritageManagementPlan.
ThankstomajorfundingfromtheDepartmentoftheEnvironment’s2014grantprogram,ProtectingNationalHistoricSites,workcouldbegin.Archivalresearchtofindoriginalconstructiondocumentationandengaginghighlyskilledcraftsmenleftastheproject’smainchallengetheneedtoguaranteetheArea’sfullfunctionalityduringreconstructionthroughthesummersof2016and2017.Thistalkwilldescribehowweachievedthepoliticalimperativeofconcealingfromthepublicthesightsandsoundsofmonthsofstonework,waterproofing,upgradinggardensandpavements,andenhancingaccessibility.

Abstract: Aswebecomeincreasinglyconnected,wearealsosearchingformeaninginourlivesandplaceinthecommunityByacknowledgingthisshiftingcontext,ourgoalsbecomelessaboutpreservingbuildings,landscapes,acollectionoramomentintime,butratheraboutconnectingpeopleandengagingcommunitieswhethervisitors,scholars,donorsorthosewholiveandworknearby.Asourcommunitieschangeandevolveweneedtoexpandanddevelopournarrative.Weneedtoworkhardertofindandconnectthedotsbetweengovernments,organisationsandcommunitypartnerswhoareactiveinheritage,arts,environment,tourism,transport,urbanplanningandotherareas.

Abstract:Communitygroupsreactedstronglytoa2016unsolicitedproposaltoundertakealargescalecommercialandresidentialdevelopmentaroundManukaCircle,anareathatincludedthreeheritagelistedplaces:ManukaOval,ManukaPoolandtheformerGriffithChildWelfareCentre.
Thepresentationwilloutlinethenatureoftheproposalandrecounthowthecommunitycampaignagainstitunfoldedanditsultimateresult.Thecommunitycampaignwasastrongexpressionofthemanyvaluesthecommunityplacedontheheritageofthearea.Thesevalueswereidentifiedthroughsignificantmediacoverageandacommunitysurvey.
Thecampaignalsoraisedseveralothersignificantissuesincluding:
• shortcomingswiththegovernment’sprocessesforhandlingunsolicitedproposals;• theneedforacommunitybasedplanforthebroaderarea;and• concernsaboutoverlycloserelationshipsbetweenmanyofthestakeholders.
