Miss Demelza Brock is our

2018 Carnival Queen. Demelza, age 12, attends Okehampton College and has lived in Hatherleigh her

whole life. Demelza is an extremely busy young lady. She is a member of the Hatherleigh Players and is a keen sports and athletics fan where she has won four gold medals for gymnastics. Demelza’s other interests include singing, drum playing at Grade 5, ballet dancing at Grade 2 and swimming. Demelza is also a member of Stagecoach in Exeter, as part of which she has performed

3

Our 2018 Carnival President and Royaltyin shows at the Barnfield Theatre in Exeter and has recently passed her Grade 2 LAMDA drama exam with a distinction. It’s a wonder she has any time to get involved with the carnival every year! Coming from a long line of carnival enthusiasts, Demelza has taken part in the processions on family floats since

she was 2 months old. Her most memorable float was ‘Stairway to Heaven’, in memory of her Grandmother Marie Daniel and was the last float she did with her brother Liam and late brother Joshua. Demelza’s chosen charity is Cancer Research UK Kids and Teens so some of the profit from this year’s carnival will be given to this worthy charity. We hope that she will enjoy all the preparations for this year and enjoys her time as Carnival Queen.

This year’s Prince and Princess are Joshua

Anstey, age 4, and Sophie King, age 5. Joshua and Sophie have been friends since they were born with the two families having close connections for many generations; most latterly Sophie and Joshua’s daddies being each other’s best man.

Joshua, who started at Winkleigh Primary School in September, loves farming and helping his Daddy and Grandad with anything he can on the family farm. He is also a keen sportsman and loves any sport. He has enjoyed All Stars cricket this season and is a bit of a dab hand with a bat! Sophie, who is in Year 1 at Hatherleigh Primary School, loves art, especially junk modelling, and feeding lambs on her grandparents farm. She also attends weekly ballet and swimming lessons. However her biggest love of

all is going on holiday! Joshua and Sophie are certainly no strangers to the carnival scene and are both from carnival families. Joshua was first on a float at the age of 11 months appearing as an alien on a Toy Story float with his cousins. Since then he’s been on a float each year being Crackle from Snap Crackle and Pop, a train driver and one of Snow White’s Seven Dwarves! Sophie was first on a float at the age of 4 months when she appeared as a fairy in a toadstool on a tableaux entitled ‘Garden Secrets’ with her cousins. As she was so tiny, her seat was moveable so it could be moved further into the toadstool for shelter when the forecast was known! Sophie has also been on a float every year since. Joshua and Sophie are both very excited to be Prince and Princess and are looking forward to carnival day.

Our 2018 Carnival President

The Committee would like to thank Alan, Demelza, Joshua and Sophie for being our 2018 President and Royalty and hope they all

enjoy their day.

The Carnival Committee are pleased to introduce Mr Alan Cranleigh as our 2018 president. Devon born and

bred Alan has lived in Hatherleigh since 1972, after moving here from Bideford, and he has never looked back. Alan is fully involved in community life and has recently taken on the role of Chairman of Hatherleigh Community Centre. He holds the community spirit of Hatherleigh close to his heart and he feels this spirit has been reflected in recent events with the townspeople continuing their support of the Tuesday markets, despite the plans for redevelopment, and the increasing support that people have shown towards the Community Centre. He also feels that this spirit is reflected in the enormous turnout for the 5am tar barrels year upon year, rain or shine! Over the years Alan has been an avid fan of the carnival participating in several processions as a walking guy and even pulling the tar barrels a couple of times - his favourite element of the carnival. For the previous four years Alan has judged the floats; a task postponed this year due to his Presidential activities! One of the highlights of the carnival for Alan is dragging the barrels up on the Friday night, a task he has shared with his Grandson since he has been old enough. Alan feels that seeing the next generation take part in the traditions that surround the carnival is a wonderful sight.

A Message From our

Carnival PresidentI moved to Hatherleigh in 1972. My life in Hatherleigh

has been good and I love it here.

It was a wonderful and proud moment to be asked if I

would take on the role as 2018 president

“A PROPER JOB!”

In the past carnivals I’ve been a walking guy, pulled

the barrels and judged the floats.

This is an opportunity to thank all the carnival

committee and all the helpers behind the scenes that

make this such a wonderful carnival;

a big thank you to you all.

Your 2018 President

Alan Cranleigh

Hather leigh Does HavenOnce the carnival is over and we have dried ourselves out (well,

let’s be honest that is the case most years), the committee do not rest on their laurels. Instead they meet most months of the year to plan fundraising events needed to raise the money to keep the carnival running. After the success of last year, our first fundraiser of the year saw a welcome return of ‘Hatherleigh Does Haven’ on June 15th. People who came to the evening were once again transported to their favourite holiday park where they enjoyed an evening of family entertainment, compered by Robin Wonnacott. This year saw the introduction of a talent show entitled ‘Hatherleigh’s Got Talent’ and the entrants, all of primary school age, certainly demonstrated that Hatherleigh HAS got talent. They all performed with amazing confidence with acts ranging from a performing dog, stand up comedy, street dance and a vocalist who performed a song that she had written herself. There was also party dances led by freelance dancer and dance teacher Jessica Squire, bingo called by Katie Bennett and a music quiz written by Andrew Bennett who also provided the music for the evening with his disco ‘Ginja Ninjas Wheels of Steel’. The finale to the evening was a fantastic cabaret entitled ‘Decades of Dance’ performed by the Dartmoor Dance Company. A bar, BBQ and face painting helped the evening along and our 2018 Carnival President and Royalty were also introduced.

The Boys are

On August 11th The Wurzels made a welcome return to Hatherleigh, this time playing in The Community

Centre. The evening was kicked off by Cracknakeel, a South Devon folk band who really got the party going in time for The Wurzels to take to the stage in a way only they can! The evening was topped off by traditional Irish folk band the O’Marleys and plenty of ceilidh dancing from an appreciative audience. The hall looked fantastic especially the lighting effects created by the very talented Ben Whiting and Ben Bailey. Thank you to everyone who helped in any way over the evening and to everyone who bought a ticket and came along to party. For details of fundraising events that we are planning for later in the year and next year, see page 16 of this programme.

Our last fundraising event before carnival was a duck race held on

the 9th September. There was a good turnout with supporters of the event enjoying afternoon tea in the sunshine before watching the 500 ducks take a swim in the River Lew.

The winner of the duck race was Emma Edwards, second was Joe Bater and third was William Rumford. The ‘booby’ prize went to Roy King who was the owner of the last duck to finish.

At this event, the Queens draw was also made with our Queen, Miss Demelza Brock, selling 766 draw tickets this year. First prize went to Natalie from Travis Perkins, Okehampton, second to Marjorie Cleverdon and third to Andrew Brock.

We would like to thank everyone who supported both the Carnival and Demelza in buying a duck or draw ticket (or both!) and everyone who supported the event on the day. © Main Photo Andy Gilbert

HATHERLEIGH CARNIVAL 10th NOVEMBER 2018

Dear Residents of Hatherleigh,

As I am sure you are aware, this year’s carnival takes place on Saturday 10th November. As has been the case in previous years, cones will be placed around the town to keep the carnival route clear. I am writing to you to make you aware of where and when the parking restrictions will apply.

The route is the usual ‘figure of 8’around the town, and the following roads will be affected: Victoria Road, South Street, High Street, Holsworthy Road, Market Way, Hole Court, Market Street, The Square, Park Road, Bridge Street, Normandy Place and part of the A386 by-pass. The restrictions will come into force from 22:00hrs on Friday 9th November 2018 until 24:00hrs on Saturday 10th November 2018.

The Square and part of Market Street will be closed on both Friday and Saturday night up to Midnight.

Please note that any vehicle parked in contravention of the parking restrictions is liable to be issued a Fixed Penalty Notice served by the Traffic Enforcement Officers.

I hope you understand that the restrictions are necessary for the safety of everyone involved in the carnival. I am aware of the issues that can arise from the restrictions but your patience and co-operation is appreciated by everyone.

We will endeavour to open the roads as soon as safely possible and keep disruption for residents to a minimum.

If you wish to contact the Committee to discuss parking, please do, by using the Number 01837 810265 and speak with our Secretary, or alternatively leave a message at our e-mail address which is [email protected].

We are introducing a new cup this year which will be judged on-route. The entry which has the most visual impact will be awarded the Jacky Entwistle

cup. This will be judged by three members of the public who will

be put on the spot and asked their opinion after they have

seen all the entries go by. This is something that Jacky always wanted to implement as she

felt the spectacle of the evening procession was paramount.

A Message from the Carnival Chairman

Mark Reddaway

Last year we had a little bit of precipitation over the carnival weekend, which hopefully didn’t detract from the fantastic entries and entertainment, and I thank you for all your support on behalf of the committee. During the year we have worked hard as a committee to listen to your feedback and have focused our energies on keeping the event the spectacle that we are known for.

As you are aware the market is being redeveloped, and we are already forward planning to make the transition as seamless as possible. Change will always happen, but with your support and co-operation we will maintain our core principles which are stated below. The Carnival Committee would like to express their thanks to the Vick family for allowing us to use the market over the years.

This year we have sadly lost two members of the community who had a big impact on the Carnival; Jacky Entwistle and Albert Palfrey. Jacky was a past committee member, Carnival Queen and President and built many a float over the years both for the scouts and her own family. Albert was a life-long carnival supporter who was often the voice of the last appeal and also held the position of Carnival President. Their presence will be very much missed over carnival weekend.

For those of you who watched the morning tar barrel run last year, you witnessed the impressive spectacle of the use of big tar barrels similar to the ones used in the past. There is a good chance there may be a repeat this year.

This year we have introduced sponsorship of the Evening Classes by local businesses, and have been delighted by the support we have received. This gives us the opportunity to support more entrants, without which, we would have no event, through providing them with a grant to help towards costs.

I hope you have enjoyed reading our Carnival Programme and are inspired to take part in the carnival any way large or small; we would be love to welcome you on board. Our core principles remain the same, which are:- • To protect our heritage• To safeguard our event • To invest in the future.• To make it a safe and enjoyable experience for all ages.

Thank you to everyone who gives, loans, donates and volunteers to make this event happen.

Looking forward to seeing you over the Carnival weekend

Oggy, Oggy, OggyIt wouldn’t be Hatherleigh

Carnival without the burning torches and tar barrels. In the lead up to carnival weekend many hours of hard work and commitment go into preparing the barrels and torches. This includes cutting down the sticks for the torches and tarring the barrels many times over. The committee would like to thank NJB Automotive for donating the paraffin needed for carnival day.

On the Friday night, the unlit barrels are pulled up through the town by wide-eyed, excited, children. At 5am the next morning the first set of barrels are pulled ablaze through the streets with the second set being pulled along the same route after the torch-lit carnival procession is over.

This fantastic image of the tar barrels was taken last year by Miss Eliza Squire and was the winning entry in our photography competition. We will be running this competition again this year so don’t forget to get snapping and enter via our Facebook page or our carnival website. The winning photo will appear in next year’s programme.

Page 31: Saturday 10th November 2018 - Hatherleigh€¦ · “Best wishes to Hatherleigh Carnival” Supplier of quality replacement parts at competitive prices to the agricultural industry

31

Non-pulling members of the sub-committee also have t-shirts (this year white with black writing). This year the tar-barrel t-shirts will have RIP M&D written on the sleeve in memory of two young local lads who tragically passed away earlier this year and a donation will be made to the Hatherleigh Night Landing Fund in their memory.

If you would like to join the committee and pull the barrels in future years please ring Dawn Stevens on 01837 810265 to find out more information. We are also looking for people to carry the torches this year; ring Dawn or just turn up on the night at the top of Market Street.

Members of the tar barrel sub committee wear official t-shirts which are a different

colour each year (this year black with white writing). These are given to committee members once they have attended the health and safety briefing. Only people who have attended this briefing, are age 16 or over and are wearing the t-shirts can pull the burning tar barrels on carnival day.

Be There or Be ...

This year will be no different with a fantastic line up planned for both nights so make sure you wander up to the square to see what you are missing. This year’s line-up includes:

Friday 9th November

From 7pm onwards, stopping for the pulling up of the unlit barrels

DJ SteveThe Carnival All Stars

Crazy Mama (Sponsored by The Tally Ho)

Saturday 10th NovemberFrom 6pm onwards, stopping for the carnival procession,

massed bands and the tar barrelsGreg Bushell

Jealousy and the CatThe Fire Blockers (sponsored by The George Hotel).

This is all provided for your entertainment free of charge but there will be donation buckets and we would be grateful for your support in order to help us to keep the carnival running. We would like to thank The Tally Ho and The George Hotel who have sponsored two of the

bands for the evenings.

Rumour has it there is also a new stage design for this year so make sure you ‘be there or be ... Square!’

For the past two years, there has been live music in the Square on both Friday and Saturday evenings to keep the crowds entertained after the carnival proceedings.

Page 33: Saturday 10th November 2018 - Hatherleigh€¦ · “Best wishes to Hatherleigh Carnival” Supplier of quality replacement parts at competitive prices to the agricultural industry

33

This year, the Hatherleigh Carnival will be running our own BBQ and

Breakfast stall in the Square, so make sure to come and say hi!

Burgers will be available from 7pm on Friday 9th, and from 6pm on Saturday 10th, so plenty of time to get some grub before the music and procession! Soft and hot drinks will also be available.

New to 2018, we will also be selling ‘breakfast wraps’ before the 5am tar barrels (picture a full English breakfast, only portable!) from 4:30am onwards.

All meat is sourced from local butchers, S.A. Edwards, Brickyard Farm Shop.

Through the Keyhole Window!

Last year we introduced a decorated house competition and were pleased with the response. The winner was Ro Skelton’s household with their amazing Viking ship.

If you would like to take part this year, please call Louise on 01837 811255 to enter by noon on Thursday 8th November so we can ensure that your house and/or guy are judged. You can

decorate as much or as little as you wish in any way you wish. This could be lights, bunting, decorations made by children – the list is endless. As carnival is so close to Guy Fawkes maybe a decorated guy (like a decorated scarecrow) but PLEASE don’t put them out until carnival day itself. As well as making Hatherleigh look great there will be cash prizes of £25, £20 and £15

for the top three. We look forward to seeing them all.

As well as the tableaux, tar barrels and torches, businesses and residents also get involved in the spirit of the carnival and help to make the whole town look festive.

Every year businesses are invited to take part in the shop window competition and produce some amazing displays. Last year the winner of the competition was The Art of Hair with their fantastic Hairspray display. Make sure you keep your eyes peeled this year to see how many decorated windows you can spot.

Last Year’s RoyaltyBeing Hatherleigh’s Carnival Queen of 2017 was a real honour and, although the typical British weather didn’t hesitate to show, I enjoyed every moment. It was especially exciting to see the float and outfits go from plans and drawings into the beautiful masterpieces they were and the way it all came together on the day. I would like to thank my family, the Strawbridges, for organising everything, to everyone who spent days and evenings sticking crêpe paper to many different pieces of paper, to Rose for making the beautiful outfits, to the Dennis’ for providing a tractor and driver, to the Balsdons for allowing us the use of one of their sheds and to all my wonderful attendants; Chloe, Oliver, Abi, and Hannah. Finally I would like to thank the committee for, once again, organising an amazing carnival and to everyone who turned up and showed their support on the day. I wish the very best of luck to next year’s Carnival Queen, Demelza Brock.
