CHESTER REGATTAEstablished 1733

Chester Regatta was first established more than 280 years ago and is the oldest regatta of itstype in the world. It has over 100 years more history than the Oxford – Cambridge BoatRace (1829) and Henley Royal Regatta (1839). It is a City regatta, not a club regatta; acooperative effort by all the rowing clubs on the Dee at Chester (Kings School, Grosvenor,Queens Park High School, Rex and Royal Chester). Here you will find some informationabout this great tradition, to which you are now a valued contributor.

Rowing is one of the oldest competitive sports, with races held in ancient Rome and Egyptin oared galleys. Records show rowing in Chester for more than a millennium. In 973ADKing Edgar visited Chester following his coronation in Bath and was rowed on the River Deeby “eight kings of Britain”. This event is commemorated with a detailed plaque at KingEdgar’s Field park in Handbridge, Chester. Another account says in 1541 the scholars ofKing’s School Chester rowed Henry VIII on the Dee.

In the 1700’s the sport became very popular. In Chester, the contests on the River Dee werein coracles and fishing boats between professional watermen, women and apprentices.Betting was an important element in the competitions and racing was often between publichouses with a cash prize. Early amateur rowing consisted mostly of private events and longriver trips in galleys to garden parties. Over about a century, Chester Regatta changed fromcontests between professional watermen to the sort of amateur rowing races we know today.

In Joseph Hemmingway’s History of the City of Chester, written in 1831, there is specificreference to Chester Regatta. “1814, June 17, the City illuminated in the commemorationof the General peace … a regatta took place on the Dee.” He also described the regatta of1817; “… when Liverpool and other aquatic minded cities sent boat crews to compete in theraces … the surface of the Dee was covered with boats decorated in all the gaudy splendourof various covered floats.”.

In 1814 there were three events – an open race for a prize offour guineas, an event for women for a purse of two guineasand another for boys of a purse of two pounds. The crewsstarted opposite the Snuff Mills, raced upstream to thebottom of the Groves and back again, twice. Contemporaryreports say the 1814 Chester Regatta was preceded by “anordinary at Mrs Jones’s at the Bear and Billet; Dinner on thetable at one o’clock”.

Chester Regatta History continued from earlier in this Programme.

To celebrate the coronation of Queen Victoria in 1838, Chester Regatta consisted of “sevenraces open to competitors from all parts”. Queen Victoria married Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg in 1840 and to mark the occasion the Rt Hon Lord Robert Grosvenor, MP, donatedthe Prince Albert Cup to the Regatta, “in honour of her Majesty’s nuptials, to be rowed foron the waters of the Dee”. A poster for the 1840 Chester Regatta is reproduced [opposite]and lists twelve events including the Prince Albert Cup, fisherwomen’s boats, a coracle raceand “skiffs rowed by mechanics”.

The Chester Regatta Regulations published in the Chester Chronicle of 31st July 1869stipulated that “all entries must be made under the name of the boat, the place from whichit comes, the name of the club if any to which the boat belongs, names of the crew andcolours”. It was not until the formation of the Amateur Rowing Association in 1882 that itwas ruled entries to regattas had to be made by named clubs rather than boats. These newrules may be because members of the growing number of rowing clubs preferred to raceunder club colours rather than under the name of a boat.

Chester Regatta is proud of its fine collection of trophies. We also have various past RegattaProgrammes including one from 1 July 1873 which says, “The Wirral Challenge Cup, value£50, with presentation Cups and a Coxswain’s Prize, value £20, for Four Oared Out-riggedBoats, to be rowed and steered by Gentlemen Amateurs who have never won a Senior orOpen Prize at a Regatta – From Heron Bridge to Mr Winstanley’s Garden; about one mileand a quarter.”. In 2008 a silver trophy awarded at Chester Regatta in 1895 for the Maidensevent was kindly donated to the Regatta by Graham Oakley, Group Secretary of Marks &Spencers. He recalls being told that many years ago it had been found in a garden, possiblydiscarded after a burglary as being too distinctive to be readily sold. The 1895 RegattaProgramme describes this as, “the Ladies’ Prize, value Fifteen Pounds”.

The River Dee is a beautiful river, rarely unrowable, often a delight. Chester Regatta hasbeen run over different courses on the Dee over the years, both long and sprint. Todayracing commences at The Red House, in keeping with the public house tradition of 1733,finishing at Sandy Lane Park. In the Quad and Eight Club Challenge four points will be awarded for the winning boat, three points for the losing finalist and one each for the losing semi-finalists.

A special prize will be presented to the coach present at Chester Regatta 2017 who wins most votes via the Facebook page “Chester Regatta 1733”. Not open to past recipients! Previously presented to James Carew of Merchant Taylors School BC in 2014; Mart in Chandler of Trafford BC in 2015; and Andy Turner of Grosvenor RC in 2016. Nominate your coach (or all of them!) by name and rowing club by posting on the Chester Regatta 1733 Facebook page. At 11am on 10 June 2017 we will set up an event on the Facebook page for each qualifying nominee. To vote simply click “Going” to that event. Anyone can vote and you can vote for as many coaches as you like. Voting ends at 5pm on 10 June and the prize will be presented at 5.30pm. The Regatta Secretary’s decision is final.
