WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE? Parody:

A work that imitates another work in order to ridicule, ironically comment on, or poke some affectionate fun at the work itself, the subject of the work, the author or fictional voice of the parody, or another subject.

Page 3: SATIRE and Parody

PARODY - CONTINUEDTakes the form of a contemptuous imitation of an existing artistic production — usually a serious work of literature, music, artwork or film — for satirical or humorous purposes.

Exists in all art media, including literature, music, and cinema.

PARODY IN WRITINGIt is with the saddest heart that I have to pass on the following: Please join me in remembering a great icon. Veteran Pillsbury spokesperson, the Pillsbury Doughboy, who died yesterday of a severe yeast infection and complications from repeated pokes to the belly. He was 71. Doughboy was buried in a lightly greased coffin. Dozens of celebrities turned out, including Mrs. Butterworth, the California Raisins, Hungry Jack, Betty Crocker, the Hostess Twinkies, Captain Crunch and many others. The graveside was piled high with flours as longtime friend, Aunt Jemima, delivered the eulogy, describing Doughboy as a man who "never knew how much he was kneaded". Doughboy rose quickly in show business but his later life was filled with many turnovers. He was not considered a very smart cookie, wasting much of his dough on half-baked schemes. Despite being a little flaky at times, as a crusty old man he was still considered a roll model for millions. Toward the end it was thought he'd rise once again, but he was no tart. Doughboy is survived by his second wife, Play Dough. They have two children and one in the oven. The funeral was held at 3:50 for about 20 minutes.

SATIRE Satire:A work that ridicules its subject through the use of techniques such as exaggeration, reversal, incongruity, and/or parody in order to make a comment or criticism about it.

Page 13: SATIRE and Parody

SATIRE - CONTINUEDA technique used in drama and the performing arts, fiction, journalism, and occasionally in poetry and the graphic arts.

Although satire is usually witty, and often very funny, the primary purpose of satire is not primarily humor but criticism of an individual or a group in a witty manner.

4 TECHNIQUES OF SATIRE1) Exaggeration:

To enlarge, increase, or represent something beyond normal bounds so that it becomes ridiculous and its faults can be seen. (Political cartoons)

4 TECHNIQUES OF SATIRE (CONT)3) Reversal:

To present the opposite of the normal order (e.g., the order of events, hierarchical order). (Gender roles)

4) Parody:To imitate the techniques and/or style of some person, place, or thing.
