Unit 3 Lessons 4-6 Plants and Animals 1. An adaptation is any trait that helps a living thing survive. Ex. An eagle’s wings let it fly. 2. A horse has teeth that are flat, not pointed. This helps the horse eat grass. 3. Camouflage helps an animal blend into its surroundings. 4. Mimicry is an adaptation that makes one organism look like another. Ex. A harmless animal makes itself look like a harmful to avoid getting hurt. 5. Plants and animals have similar adaptations. Plants do not have structures for chewing like animals have. 6. A behavior is anything an organism does. 7. Learned Behaviors are behaviors that come from watching other animals or through experience. 8. An instinct is a behavior that an animal knows without learning it. Ex. Ducklings follow their mother in a single line when walking and swimming. 9. Hibernate is when animals go into a deep sleep-like state that helps them survive the cold winter conditions. 10. Migrate is when animals move a long distance as a group from one region to another and then returns to the original spot. 11. Frog Model-We used index cards as the body of a frog. The tip of the frog’s tongue is used for catching food. We changed the surfaces of the tongue on each frog.
