All About Edges

by Chantel Lynn Barber - FineArtViews Newsletter | Friday, July 21, 2017 | Issue 2820

“Over the years I have learned how quickly a painting can be over-worked and that more often than not, it is because of edges. As an artist, it is so easy to get right on top of our work and forget to see how it reads from a distance. It is a challenge, especially in acrylic, to keep edges soft right from the beginning - but it makes a world of difference!

“When I first started painting in acrylic I had no clue about edges. Now, that seems a lifetime ago. I have realized edges can make or break a painting. If all edges have a similar treatment, it confuses the viewer. Where to look? Acrylic artists can achieve all the same wonderful edges oil artists can, but you have to get creative. From the very start of the painting Curler Princess, I considered edges. I applied paint thinly and worked it into the panel to create soft edges. This was done without using water or medium. In the initial

block in stage you have to commit to do something - and accept the possibility you may fail. Do not be timid with your strokes - commit to them!

“As I mentioned earlier, during the initial block in paint was applied thinly (not watered down), but a small

amount spread over larger areas. It is OK for the white of the underneath surface to show through at this stage (I will even leave bits of it coming through in a finished painting). I begin with a white surface. I have found acrylic dries duller and a white support allows me to read values put down, along with keeping colours looking fresh. All edges remain soft until I feel I have an accurate drawing - proportions and placement. Up until this point I have made sure the paint has not been applied heavily so that I can reshape areas without unsightly paint build-

up. I want to choose where sharp edges are created.

“Once everything was blocked in, I indulged in applying heavier strokes of paint. I laid down the strokes (following the form), one at a time. For example, in the hair passages, strokes were not blended since the values were carefully controlled. However, when acrylic is applied thickly, it takes longer to dry allowing more manipulation time. Acrylic shrinks as it dries, so if you want to achieve nice texture, apply it heavier.

“One way interesting edges were created in Curler Princess was by using a damp paper towel. Colour was laid down, allowed to dry for a few minutes, and then some of it was gently lifted off with the paper towel to achieve the desired effect. It isn't always about the paint you apply, sometimes it is the paint you take off. Some of the most wonderful effects I have achieved in acrylic were done by removing paint from the canvas.

“Force yourself to use brushes that are larger than what you are comfortable with. Don't get caught up in details

- think mass and form. The background colour was laid down with larger brushes. Even the defining strokes around her face.

“The background is a tool to break up edges and make them interesting. The key is to lay down a stroke and leave it. If you continue to mess with it, the effect will be ruined. The palette knife was used to manipulate the edges in several areas, especially in her hair, the tip of her nose and her clothing.

“Towards the end of the painting, fresh paint was put out and finishing strokes were applied, and left (the hardest part), in order to maintain vitality and freshness. I have come to love the challenge of handling edges in a painting. As I have said before, painting truly is a lifelong adventure and it does take courage to welcome a new concept when creating art.”
