Letter from the President

Dear Members,

A warm welcome to all our long term, recent and brand new members.

So, how was that demo by Harry Johnson? I thoroughly enjoyed it, and by all accounts several of you did too.

Members’ 2 opened on Monday with a promising start to sales. Laura gave an emotional and uplifting speech at her opening address and with the weather warming up, we are anticipating many more visitors to the Richard Crowie Hall at Kirstenbosch.

The Annual Exhibition was a great success all told. We had so many positive comments from the public on the high standard of work produced.

We recorded R198 700 for 49 works of art sold by 37 artists. However, despite the seemingly good sales for this Annual, the exhibitions this year have been running at a loss. To give you an idea, and you will see true figures at our AGM next year. Members’ 1 there was a deficit of R1 000, and the Annual ran at a loss of approximately R5 000!

We have seen an increase in rental costs, catering costs, facilities charges, storage and delivery costs, print costs etc. I would urge you to attend the February 2019 AGM to get a clear picture of the costs involved in running your society.

To that effect, to begin recouping our losses, we will be increasing our commissions by 5% across the board, beginning with November’s Art in the Park, from 15% to 20%, and exhibitions at Kirstenbosch from 20% to 25%.

We will also be increasing membership fees for 2019 by R25. We have tried to keep the fees down and over the last several years have had minimal, and sometimes no increases. But inflation has caught up and to cover running costs we have to increase our membership fees.

We will continue to strive to give you the best talks and demos and events of interest throughout the year. For a start, Liesl Hartmann from MOCAA has invited us to a ‘walk about’ of the MOCAA including areas not open to the public. We’re in the process of organising dates and will keep you informed as to the progress. This will be something you really don’t want to miss out on.

In the meantime, do try and attend the Angela Zehnder tour of the SA National Gallery on Wednesday 31 October. Further details in the newsletter.

Until next time, be creative, be kind.

Congratulations to Jo Roets on her winning of the prestigious StateoftheART Gallery award for 2018. The Award aims to champion contemporary art by emerging artists resident in South Africa, increasing exposure for their work, and encouraging further

professional development opportunities. SASA member, Jo Roets’ light relief clay sculptures reference the various cultures of South Africa: symbolic patterns and shapes inspired by Islamic prayer mats, Ndebele aprons and neck pendants, Zulu earplugs and beer pots - and patterns from her grandmother’s doilies. Well done, Jo.

Practice your Art

9/18/2018 9:46:30 AM by Keith Bond

“I think everyone would agree that it takes tremendous work, practice, sacrifice, practice, dedication, practice, faith, practice, and more practice (to name only a few) to become a professional athlete or musician. Once someone reaches the level of professional, practice is still a daily (or near daily) routine.

A musician will go through scales, arpeggios, etudes, etc. for hours each day. And of course, it’s important to practice the set list, too – the actual pieces the musician will perform.

Neither musicians nor athletes perform without a lot of practice. In most cases more time is spent practicing than performing.

Yet, many visual artists think that once they reach the professional level, they no longer need practice. Many have the false idea that they can perform each time they enter their studio to create.

And it isn’t just professional artists. Aspiring artists often take a workshop or class and then feel that they now have all the skills or knowledge they need to perform each and every time. Many artists don’t want to put in the time and effort to improve.

Don’t get me wrong -- there are many, many artists who continue to practice and study

Page 6: SASA NEWSLETTER October 2018...Nicky Chovuchovu from KZN Gloria Zimmerman John Lowe Andy Stuart Elsa-Marie Fourie Geraldo Braga We look forward to meeting you all at our monthly meetings

Page 6 of 8

throughout their life. I commend you if you are one of this group.

But many artists don’t practice near enough. If you find yourself in this group, I hope you will commit to yourself to study. Commit today.

As you practice, add variety. Musicians don’t only practice the pieces they plan to perform. As important as they are, it is also important to go through a variety of exercises and drills to strengthen your technical and expressive abilities. Practice Your Art -- this list isn’t all inclusive, but I hope it will get you thinking about a variety of ways you can practice.

Drawing / sketching -- keep a sketchbook with you always

Create colour charts

Do a variety of exercises to develop different skills from colour theory to composition to values, perspective, creativity, expression, etc.

There are hundreds of exercises you could do. Maybe I’ll expound on some ideas in a future article, but here is a short list

- paint in colour from a black and white photo;

- do 20 minute studies from life; paint with a limited palette (3 colours plus white);

- turn photo upside down and paint what you see;

- create a series of several studies of a specific object (nose, hands, clouds, rocks, trees, etc.);

- do monochromatic value studies;

- develop a colour painting from another artist’s thumbnail sketch;

- experiment with different tools or techniques; etc.

But most importantly - the best way to practice is simply create. Create with the attitude that the piece you are working on does not need to be a masterpiece. It does not need to be exhibited. It is simply for discipline. If you go into your studio with that attitude, the pressure is off to perform. But do your best to perform. After a while, as you look at your work, you will find that some, even many, of those works are worthy of exhibiting. You DID perform - often.

As you create, include working regularly from life – figure, portrait, still life, plein air, etc.

Final Thought - Don’t send everything you create to the galleries or exhibits. Only show your best work – the

work where you really do give a great performance. Weed out the inferior work. Don’t worry that some (or many) works fail. They have taught you something. It is practice and study and discipline. They are the dress rehearsals. They prepare you and enable you to perform.”
