Newfoundland and Labrador has a rich history in global military, aerospace and aviation, and transportation innovations. The tradition continues today as our Aerospace and Defence industry evolves and grows. The sector consists of approximately 50 knowledge-intensive companies, generating approximately $350 Million CAD in annual revenues with a workforce of about 1500 workers. The industry has a growth rate of 300% since 2004 and the vast majority of aerospace, defence and security products and services created in NL are destined for markets outside of the province, including Canada, the United States, Central and South America, Europe and the Middle East. Opportunities range from Aircraft Part Manufacturing and Assembly (PMA) and shipbuilding to unmanned vehicle systems (UVS) and Remote Operating Vehicles (ROV).

Solace Power is an engineering research and development company that licenses its leading edge wireless power technology for applications across multiple markets. At Solace we’ve taken a unique approach to wireless power. We use electric field based RC2 ™ (Resonant Capacitive Coupling) technology, which permits complete spatial freedom and misalignment, while also allowing flexible and conformal end product design.

Wirelessly Charge Soldier DevicesSolace Power’s technology allows soldiers to charge all of their devices, such as a GPS or radio, wirelessly. This allows soldiers to reduce the number of cables used for charging, therefore, increasing mobility and decreasing weight.

Wirelessly Power Helmet EquipmentNight vision goggles and communications systems are typically mounted on helmets. Traditional powering options for the helmet have involved mounting a battery or tethering a power/data cable, which increases the weight of a helmet and impedes head movement. By powering the helmet and its related devices wirelessly, these limitations are overcome.

Seat to Soldier ChargingA vehicle seat can be equipped with wireless charging, allowing a soldier’s batteries to charge during transport. This means that equipment can be turned on during transport, and still be fully charged at arrival. In addition, as no cables are required, soldiers will not be tethered to the vehicle. This means there’s no change in user behaviour and the soldier can focus on mission objectives.

Falling along the North Atlantic Great Circle Route, Gander, Canada, offers aviation and aerospace companies an opportunity to expand their infrastructure and operations in a strategic location that affords significant cost savings on the ground and easy access to both North American and European markets.

Runways at Gander International Airport (YQX) are designed to carry the largest and heaviest aircraft in the world, including the Airbus A380 and Antonov An-225. Gander is home to Canadian Forces Base 9 Wing Gander and 103 Search and Rescue Squadron. NAV Canada’s Gander Area Control Centre is responsible for the world’s busiest oceanic airspace with some 1,200 flights crossing to and from the European continent daily. Low traffic density means no congestion and greater operational flexibility, making YQX the ideal site for testing and certification programs.
