SAREL GREYLING A NEW NATURE
There is anticipation for the new season already visible outside – Genesis. But we cannot experience a spring awakening without winter – those desert-seasons in our own lives – Exodus. A lifeless seed preparing for growth – also a time to grow closer to our Maker. This resonates in the art I make where I challenge the viewer with the vulnerable. As humans we are fragile, like clay. Since 2013 I discovered the painterly properties of the primarily sculptor’s medium, modeling clay (plasticine). Today, I paint with clay. Working from photographic reference, I study my subject matter closely and mix each colour hue I see. In applying clay with my fingers onto perspex, air is pressed out and the clay adhere to the hard surface. The medium is permanent but each artwork needs to be framed and glazed for interior display.
