MRSA(Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus)

MRSA is an opportunistic strain of staphylococcusaureus found in healthcare facilit ies that has aresistance to beta-lactam antibiotics. It is commonlyspread by hands and contaminated medica linstruments.

MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) VRE(Vancomycin resistant enterococci)

VRE is an enterococcus with a developed resistanceto vancomycin. It naturally lives in the intestinesbut can cause serious ailments such as peritonitis inweak patients, which is very difcult to treat.

E.Coli 157

E. coli can cause food poisoning from only 100bacteria. Often found in undercooked foods ortransferred while using the toilet, E. coli producesverotoxin to destroy blood vessel walls in the largeintestine, causing severe abdominal pain.

Salmonella

Salmonella is a common bacteria, and it is oftenspread by contaminated food from humans, rodents,and insects to foods. Salmonella infects with a largenumber of cells that are able to survive in adverseenvironments. Symptoms of diarrhea, and it is oftentreated with antibiotics.

Clostridium difcile

Clostridium difcile is a spore-forming bacterium inour intestines. Antibiotics can induce the bacteriato multiply and produces toxins that cause pain anddiarrhea. The spores can be washed away but areresistant to hand disinfectant.

Campylobacter

Campylobacter is found in the intestines of manyanimals, and infects from contaminated meat,milk and water. The bacteria itself can survivelow temperatures (below 4 degrees C) such as inrefrigerators. Infection can easily be caused by veryfew cells, and symptoms include fever, headache,diarrhea and abdominal pain for 2 to 7 days.

Norovirus

Norovirus causes inammation in the digestive tractand common food poisoning. It is usually acquiredfrom raw shellsh or from an infected persons vomitor feces. As a non-enveloped virus, it is strongagainst disinfectants.

Illness usually occurs whenuncooked foods such as sandwiches, salads anddesserts are prepared by somebody with a skininfection allowing staphylococcus aureus to secretea toxin into the food. Symptoms typically includenausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain.

Fundamentals of Hand Hygiene

Hand hygiene can be conducted at varying levels depending on the situation and risk of infection. This

effectiveness depends on both technique and hand hygiene products. In general there are three levels

which will conveniently be called, general hand hygiene, hygienic hand hygiene and surgical hand hygiene.

While general hand hygiene keeps hands clean of daily dirt and grease with soap and water, hygienic hand

hygiene takes cleanliness a step further by removing microorganisms that can cause infection with soap and

water in combination with alcohol hand disinfection. Surgical hand hygiene is conducted on clean hands

with enough alcohol hand disinfectant to keep hands wet for a certain amount of time, usually 90 to 180

seconds depending on international guidelines, to kill local microorganisms and microorganisms transferredfrom ones surroundings. No-touch dispensers increase the safety of hand disinfection by preventing cross-

contamination.

Hand hygiene can be conducted in varying degrees of antisepsis. These three levels are called, Hand

washing, Hygienic Hand Hygiene, and Surgical Hand Antisepsis. Levels of hand hygiene can beunderstood by visualizing the layer from which bacteria and pathogens are removed.

various stages of antisepsis, showing the differences of bacteria growth between clean and unwashed

hands.

Frequently Missed Areas During Handwashing

The simple act of handwashing does not guarantee all areas of the hands will be equally cleaned. Areas

such as the ngertips, thumbs and in between the ngers are frequently missed during a routine handwash.

This can leave the hands contaminated and possibly weaken the effect of hand disinfectants; especially the

ngertips which are the most commonly used part of the hand. Extra care must be taken to wash all parts of

the hands thoroughly.

Effective Disinfection Method

When washing, keep in mind that thengernails and cuticles can harbor hugequantities of transient ora.

Curl ngers while applying anadequate amount of sanitizer to

the palms and ngerstips.

Rub palm to palm with ngersinterlaced.

Press ngers into palm of eachhand and rotate.

Cover whole surface of hands upto wrists, rubbing palm to palm.

Grip the ngers on each hand andrub in a sideways back and forth

movement.

Rub each wrist with the oppositehand.

Spread it over the back of eachhand including the wrists with

ngers interlaced.

Clasp each thumb in the oppositehand and rotate.

Once dry, your hands are safe.

The Hand Washing Navigator is a unique concept for hand hygiene education.

It guides the user through the proper steps while keeping correct time so a full

hand wash can be completed with every activation.

Infection control managers will benet from the fully adjustable step timer and

wash counter. This allows each unit to be customized according to the facilitys

needs and hand washing method. The actual number of completed washes is

saved, allowing compliance to be monitored.
