Dear Students and Parents,

Welcome to the Student Success Center. This booklet is intended to provide

information about where to begin when planning for life after high school. This

packet will help you understand some of the supports and opportunities the Student

Success Center has to offer. We certainly understand that applying to college,

armed forces, or trade school can be quite confusing, so we hope that you visit the

center and receive the help you need to make the transition smoothly.

Communication is very important, and the Student Success Center staff are here to

assist you in person, email, phone, or Zoom. Our office hours are Monday-Friday

College Entrance Exams (SAT/ACT)

1. Take BOTH tests to see where you score higher. It is not unusual to take one of these tests 2-3 times to improve your score.

2. Sign up at: https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/sat/register/online-registration-help for the SAT and https://www.act.org/content/act/en/register.html for the ACT. Note that it takes about 30 minutes to sign up for the ACT- they ask a lot of questions.

3. There is a cost to take these tests. You will need a credit card to pay. If you are on free or reduced lunch, you will qualify for a fee waiver. See Mr. Spires in the SSC for details.

4. Keep track of your username and passwords.

Study Sources The most recommended SAT study resource is The Official SAT Study Guide (blue). You can get it at a discounted price at Amazon.com or Walmart. It comes with answers that have helpful explanations!!!

If you have a budget constraint or prefer to study on your computer, you can download all of the contents (Yes, identical!) FOR FREE!!! See the following links.

Official Study Guide - 8 practice tests and answers- up to 200 point increase https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/sat/practice/full-length-practice-tests

Official Study Guide - Study guide excluding practice tests (test strategies) https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/sat/inside-the-test/study-guide-students

Kahn Academy is another helpful FREE resource to use- up to 100-point increase. It’s easy to use, and good for learning/reviewing content knowledge. You can access it directly at www.khanacademy.org/sat . Make sure you sync your PSAT through CollegeBoard to get personalized test practice for specific content you need help with. ***You also need to know your PSAT score so you can set realistic college goals and plan accordingly.

ACT:

We have some students who do not do as well on the SAT, yet sleigh the ACT, and vice versa. This could be you; therefore, we expect all students to take the ACT to determine which test is best for you. We have seen substantial differences in scores, so PLEASE take both. You may not like the pace of this test (goes a little faster), but your score may be higher. Only ¼ is math. The most recommended study guide (red) that includes answers with explanations:

. Studying from these books will help you prepare for BOTH tests because content is similar. Style and format of tests are different. The science section of the ACT is devoted to interpreting data, graphs and analysis. You can do well on this section, even if you are not a science superstar.

If you are simply not a test taker, you may want to learn test-taking strategies. Use caution using these strategy books because this cannot replace actual test-taking practice. The key is using the answer guides immediately following questions so that you can learn and unlearn what the publisher is asking for. Strategizing, however, can increase test-taking confidence. The ACT Black Book is its brother/sister.

TOEFL: For international students AND those who speak English as a second language. Go to https://www.ets.org/toefl/ibt/about to learn more.

ASVAB: Military testing materials available at the student Success Center.

PRACTICE reduces anxiety and sets you up for success.
