Club Drugs
What are “Club Drugs?”
Synesthetic drugs that are used at nightclubs, bars, and raves.
These drugs include:
MDMA, or Ecstacy
GHB, Gamma Hydroxybutyrate
Rohypnol a.k.a. Roofies
Ketamine
Methamphetamine
MDMA or Ecstasy
Methylenedioxymethamphetamine, is a synthetic, mind-altering drug that enhances self awareness and decreases inhibitions.
Increases heart rate and blood pressure, produces muscle tension, teeth grinding, and nausea.
Chronic use of the drug may accompany seizures, muscle breakdown, stroke, kidney failure, and cardiovascular failure.
GHB and Roofies
Gamma hydroxybutyrate and Rohypnol are often connected to sexual assault, rape, and robbery.
Effects include dizziness, sedation, heacaches, and nausea.
Roofies cause muscle relaxation, loss of consciousness, and an inability to remember what happened.
Ketamine
Primarily used by veterinarians as an animal anesthetic. However, when used by humans, the drug can cause euphoria, accompanied by visual hallucinations.
It impairs motor functions, increases blood pressure, amnesia, and mild respiratory depression.
Questions
What is Rohypnol also knows as?
Ketamine is primarily used in what profession?
What two drugs are often connected with sexual assault?
NarcoticsBY: MARLEY NELSON, ALYSSA O’SHIELDS, RACHAEL YOUNG, WILL DILLON, MK FALLS, MARGARET BAUGHAN
What are “Narcotics”? Narcotics are substances that bring relief from pain and produce sleep.
The term narcotic is derived from the Greek word narkotikos, which means a state of lethargy or sluggishness
Narcotics are popularly associated with any drug that is socially unacceptable.
Some examples are codeine, methadone, heroin, and morphine.
Opiates Medical professions apply the term opiate to most of the drugs properly classified as narcotics.
Narcotic drugs are analgesics; they relieve pain by depressing the central nervous system.
Regular use of narcotic drugs lead to physical dependence
The source of analgesic narcotics is opium- a gummy, milky juice exuded through a cut made in the unripe pod of the poppy plant (papaver somniferium)
Opium has a morphine content ranging from 4 to 21 percent.
Heroin
Although morphine is extracted from opium, most addicts prefer to use one of its derivatives, heroin.
Heroin is made simply by reacting morphine with acetic anhydride or acetyl chloride.
Only by injection are heroin’s effects almost instantaneously felt and with maximum sensitivity
Besides being a powerful analgesic, heroine produces a “high” that is accompanied by drowsiness and a deep sense of well being however the effect is short, generally lasting only three to four hours.
Codeine Codeine is also present in opium, but is usually synthetically prepared
from morphine.
It is commonly used as a prescribed cough suppressant. It is only one-sixth as strong as morphine.
In 1995, the US Food and Drug Administration approved for use the pain killing drug OxyContin
Synthetic Opiates Methadone is another well-known synthetic opiate.
Methadone eliminates an addicts desire for heroin while producing minimal side effects
Critics of the controversial methadone maintenance programs claim that methadone use is just substituting one narcotic drug for another, and supporters argue that this is the only know treatment for keeping the addict off heroin and offering some hope for eventual abstention from narcotics.
The drug being prescribed often for pain relief has led to greater quantities of the drug being diverted into the illicit market.
Anabolic SteroidsBY: CESIA, AMY, MIAH
Definition of Steroids
Steroids is synthetic compounds that are related to the male hormone testosterone.
Effects
Steroids has two different effects:-Androgen effect• Promotes the development
of secondary male characteristics.
-Anabolic effect • Accelerates muscle growth.
Facts
One way steroids are taken is through injection directly into the muscles.
Steroids are serious drugs and drugs are addictive. Discontinuing use often leads to withdrawal and depression, which creates a lack of physical drive or social interaction among users.
Steroid use among teens has seen a slight increased in the last few years.
For men in particular, steroids often cause shrinking of testicles, breast growth, hair loss, infertility, and a higher risk of prostate cancer.
Medical Side-effect
Liver Cancer and other liver malfunctions have been linked to steroids. What is in steroids? • Androstenedione • Testosterone• Estrone• Estradiol
Hallucinogens
MIA, SAMMY, JOHN, ZOE, ANNA (IN SPIRIT)
What Is A Hallucinogen?
A substance that induces changes in mood, attitude, thought processes, and perceptions Can come from plants, but are often made in labs (synthetic) General effects of all hallucinogens include seeing or otherwise sensing things that aren’t
there, increased heart rate, and rapid emotional swings
Marijuana- What Is It?
The most widely-used drug in the US (43 million have used it, and about half of those people may be regular users)
THC is the active chemical
Marijuana- WHat Does It Do?
Not a lot of evidence suggests that it’s addictive or harmful (less addictive than caffeine!!)
Short-term effects: increased heart rate, dry mouth, reddened eyes, impaired motor skills, hunger
Long-term effects: apathy, impaired judgment, loss of interest in appearance/goals
Bongy, the mascot of a legal bong shop in British Columbia
LSD (Lysergic Acid Diathylamide)
Derived from a fungus called ergot Hallucinogenic effects discovered by accident when Swiss scientist Albert Hoffman
ingested it in his laboratory Only 25 micrograms are needed to start an episode- effects can last about twelve hours Short-term effects: changes in mood, feelings of anxiety/tension, psychotic hallucinations Long-term effects: physical dependence does NOT develop
PCP (Phencyclidine)
Can be synthesized, so is often created in illicit laboratories Is often mixed with other drugs, making it more dangerous than the chemical itself Short-term effects: feelings of strength/invulnerability, sense of detachment, audiovisual
hallucinations; however, this is followed by unresponsiveness, confusion, and agitation Long-term effects: depression, violent tendencies, suicide, schizophrenic behavior
How Much Do You Remember?
1. True or False: Marijuana creates serious physical dependency.
2. Which of the following hallucinogens is most likely to produce an addiction?a. LSDb. PCPc. Marijuana
3. What is the active chemical in marijuana?a. phencyclidineb. lysergic acid diethylamidec. THC
