    SANT DAS MAHESHWARI

    (1910- 1983)

Maharaj Saheb and Babuji Maharaj had prayed to Huzur Maharajto write some book in English ooRadhasoami Faith. HuzurMaharaj observed that as both of them were M.A.'s in EnglishLiterature, they should themselves write. Maharaj Saheb dictatedone book in English known as "Discourses on RadhasoamiFaith" but left its last chapter on "Karams (actions)" incompletedue to His failing health and eventual departure to His OriginalAbode. Babuji Maharaj did not write any book. Sant DasMaheshwari M.Sc. alias Sant Das Ji, Personal Assistant toBabuji Maharaj, wrote mainly in English, translated into Englishthe entire literature of the Radhasoami Faith, including SoamijiMaharaj's "Sar Bachan Radhasoami Poetry", brought out manyoriginal books and also completed the chapter left incompleteby Maharaj Saheb, thus fulfilling the mission which Huzur Maharajhad assigned to Maharaj Saheb and Babuji Maharaj.

He brought out the esoteric meaning of the great Indian epicRamayan in 1952 in Hindi under the title of 'Ramayan ka GurhRahasya'.

While translating, into English, the elucidation of Japjiasgiven out by Soamiji Maharaj, Sant Das ji revealed the namesof the heavenly spheres, which Soamiji Maharaj had not thendisclosed in His Mauj.

    TRANSLATOR'S NOTE

"Sar Bachan Radhasoami Poetry" is the most

important treatise on Radhasoami Faith, being theoriginal and authentic exposition of the principles ofthe Faith, the genesis and evolution of creation, thestatus and position of other religions vis-a-vis SantMat, the scope and method of devotional practicesas enjoined in the Radhasoami Faith and their effi-cacy as compared with the Yogic and other prac-tices taught by other faiths, and the necessity for theadvent of the Supreme Being as Sant Sat Guru inthis world for effecting the emancipation of the soul, and the need for opening up a royal road of SuratShabd Yoga for taking the Jiva to the InaccessibleRegion.

"Sar Bachan Radhasoami Poetry" is in two parts, consisting of forty two Bachans or chapters. The firstpart begins with the most High. It opens with thesublimity and efficacy of RADHASOAMI Nam, the true, real and Dhwanytmak Name of the Supreme Being:

    RDHSOM Nm whoever recitesgets across the ocean of life;

his troubles vanish, bliss abidesand gone's complete all strife.

In the domain of Kal and Maya, the Jiva is ut-terly helpless. He is badly engrossed in passions and

desires. The Supreme Father Radhasoami Dayal inHis unbounded grace and mercy reveals the secretsof His August Abode, and saves the Jiva from theclutches of Kal and Maya. The second part of "SarBachan Radhasoami Poetry" is a vivid description of

the Jiva's homeward journey, with all the details ofthe regions and stages on the way. It is an accountof his rising from below and merging in the Ultimate. It opens thus

Was created a Chaupar of four species of life.

The scripture closes with a strong, positive note

    RADHASOAMI HAS NOW DEVOURED ALL

meaning that Radhasoami has emancipated all.

The editing of the manuscript was done by HuzurMaharaj, second Sant Sat Guru of the parent line ofthe Radhasoami Faith. The preface to the scripturewas also written by Him. The first edition of the scripturein Hindi was published in January 1884. A.D. underthe joint authority of Huzur Maharaj and Lala PratapSingh Seth, the youngest brother of Soamiji Maharaj. On the title page of the first edition is written

    (Preface)

    Originally written in Hindi

    by

Rai Salig Ram Bahadur alias Huzur Maharaj, the second Sant Sat Guru of the Radhasoami Faith

    1. This scripture was written to the dictationof Huzur Radhasoami Saheb Himself. He had no intentionto compose any Bani.1 But some devoted Satsangis2

and Sansangins3 persistently beseeched Him, and Hewas pleased to accede to their prayer.

    2. Soamiji Maharaj was born at Panni Gali inthe city of Agra, at half past twelve on the night ofthe eighth day of the dark half of the month of Bhdon,Samvat 1875 of Vikram calendar (corresponding toAugust 1818 A.D.) Since the tender age of six-sevenyears, He started explaining Parmarth4 of the highest

order to selected men and women.

    1. Sacred writing in verse. 2. Followers or devotees of theRadhasomai Faith. 3. Women-devotees of the Faith.4. Religion.

    3. . Soamiji Maharaj had no Guru, nor did Hereceive instructions in Parmarthfrom anyone. On theother hand, He explained Parmarthto His parentsand a number of Sdhus1 who came to Him.

    4. For about fifteen years, Soamiji Maharaj usedto shut Himself up in a room which is within anotherroom. He was all the time absorbed in the bliss ofSurat Shabd Yoga2. He would not come out for twoor three days at a stretch; He would not even feel acall of nature.

    5. For more than a year, some Satsangis andSatsangins had been imploring His august graciousnessfor the establishment of general Satsang21. SoamijiMaharaj accepted their prayer. He was pleased tostart delivering regular discourses on, and giving initiationto Parmrthi4 Jivas into, Sant Mat5 at His residence,on the Basant Panchamiday in Samvat 1917 Vikram(February 15, 1861 A.D.) This Satsang continued dayand night for over seventeen years. About three thousandpersons were initiated into Sant Mat, RadhasoamiFaith. They were mostly Hindus from different Provinces(States). Some Mohammedans, Jains and Christianswere also initiated. About two or three hundred of

them were Sadhus and the rest were house-holders.Those who devoted themselves of Abhyas6with zealand earnestness, came often to Soamiji Maharaj forHis Darshan7 and for taking further instructions inthe performance of Abhys and understanding its secrets

and mysteries. On realizing the immense powers ofSoamiji Maharaj in their devotional practices and expe-riencing His internal grace and mercy, they were deeplyimpressed, and they engendered profound love forand faith in His Holy Feet. At present, there are abouta hundred men and women engaged in the devotionalpractices of the Radhasoami Faith at Agra; aboutforty are Sadhus. These Sadhus had renounced theworld in search of Parmarth. On hearing of the gloryand eminence of Soamiji Maharaj, they came to Hisaugust presence, received initiation from Him, andapplied themselves to Abhys. When they experiencedsome bliss in Abhyas and Satsang, they stayed permanentlyat Agra. These Sadhus are now living in Radhasoami

Bagh (Soami Bagh) which is at a distance of aboutthree miles from the city proper. Some Satsangis whoare householders reside in the house of Soamiji Maharajin the city. They are engaged in devotional practices.

    6. Radhasoami Faith is also known as SantMat. In the past, the teachings of Sant Mat were impartedonly to the deserving few; people, in general, remainedunacquainted with it. Its practices were performed throughthe medium of Pranayam1, the restraints which it callsfor, are too rigid to be observed, and even involvethe risk of life. Few, therefore, dared to tread thatpath. Now Huzur Radhasoami Saheb (Soamiji Maharaj),in His grace and mercy, has introduced such an easymethod of Surat Shabd Yogathat everybody, man orwoman, young or old, who has true yearning and zeal, can successfully perform it.

    1. Practice of restraining or suspending breath.

    7. No one had, in the past, introduced such aneasy mode of spiritual practices. For this reason, theinternal practices of all the extant religions of theworld have lost their importance. Their followers arenow simply engaged in outward worships, rituals andobservances. They are wholly ignorant of the true SupremeBeing, the Abhyas by which He could be attainedand the secrets of the path and intermediate stages.

    8. Three essentials of the Radhasoami Faithare Guru, Nmand Sang(i.e., Satsang), and theseare the means of salvation. First of all, Guru mustbe true and perfect, that is, He must be Sant SatGuru. Hereditary or family gurus would not serve the

purpose. Secondly, Nam(Name, Word) must also betrue and real, and of the highest stage. One must beinitiated into the secrets of that Namand its Nami(Deity). Conventional names would not be of any help.Thirdly, one must get true Satsang. Satsangis oftwo kinds, internal and external. Internal Satsang consistsin raising the spirit inward and upward and uniting itwith the Holy Feet of Sat Purush Radhasoamior inturning the attention in that direction. External Satsangconsists in listening to the discourses, getting Darshan

of true and perfect Sant or Sadh, who is the incarnationof Sat Purush, and in rendering whole-hearted serviceto Him. By attending Satsang and performing Abhyasfor some time, one would clearly observe a changeand improvement in one's condition and spiritualadvancement.

    1. Darshan = Seeing, looking, observing; sight, vision, look, view; going into the presence of, visiting, an interview.

    9. The other so-called Parmarthi1 activities, suchas pilgrimage, fasts, worship of idols, recitation ofhymns, Japa2and Sumiran(repetition) of conventionalnames would not produce the desired elevation ofspirit. As these activities do not affect Nij Mana(highermind) and Surat(spirit), one's condition will not improve.Of course, some outward joy or satisfaction may befelt, but ego will get strengthened.

    10. Surat, which is an emanation from Sat PurushRadhasoami, is a mighty essence (in this body) throughthe potency of which the whole of our body, mindand all the sense organs are performing their respectivefunctions. Sants exhort Jivas3to be most careful about

this essence, and turn it towards its true source andreservoir. When this is done in right earnest, transformationand advancement would come about automatically andthe world and its objects would begin gradually toappear insignificant and worthless. The seat of thisessence (Surat) is behind the eyes. From there, itspreads and permeates the whole body, vitalizing aliphysical parts and limbs. The source and reservoirof this essence is the Adi Shabd(Prime Sound).

    11. The Adi Shabdis "SOAMI", the Creator of

all. The Adi Surat(Prime Spirit or Current) is His firstmanifestation, and is called '"RADHA". They are alsoknown as Shabdand Surat. As these Currents camedown, other Shabds originated from Adi Shabdandother Surats (spirits) emerged from Adi Surat, and Suratemanated from Shabd, and Shabd from Surat, and soon, taking their location at their respective planes.

    12. The importance of Shabd has been stressedin every religion. But a detailed description of Shabdsis nowhere to be found. For this reason people areignorant of Shabd. Now Radhasoami Saheb (SoamijiMaharaj) has given out in clear terms the details andsecrets of Shabds (sounds) of different heavenly spheresin this scripture.

    13. These are explained below :

The origin of all is Radhasoami, the SupremeBeing. In His region, Shabd is infinitely subtle. Thereis nothing in this world which resembles IT. Sat Purushoriginated from this Shabd.

First is the Shabd of Sat Purush. It is also knownas Sat Namor Sat Shabd. By His omnipotence wereevolved Sohang Purush, Par-Brahm, Brahmand Maya.

Second is the Shabd of Sohang Purush.

Third is the Shabd of Par-Brahm, which maintainsand sustains the creation of the three Loks (worlds).

Fourth is the Shabd of Brahm. It is also calledPranava. This Shabd created subtle or Brahmandi

Veda and Ishwari Maya.Fifth is the Shabd of Mayaand Brahmwhich

evolved the material for the creation of Triloki (thethree worlds), and the Akshi Veda.

Below the Shabd of Maya appeared the Shabdsof Bairat Purush, Jivaand Mana(mind).

    14. In these times, those who speak of Shabd

    Preface [ 21

Abhyas, have knowledge of the Shabds of lower regionsonly; they are not at all aware of the Shabds of higherregions. Some take the Shabd of Bairat Purush tobe the creator of all, while others speak of the Shabdwhich is an admixture of the Shabds of Maya andBrahm; even then, they are ignorant of its origin andefficacy, and of the actual methods by which it canbe attained. All these Shabds are described in detailin "Sar Bachan Radhasoami" (Poetry).

    15. Radhasoami Faith or Sant Mat is the pathof Bhakti(devotion). It stipulates sincere love for andfaith in the Holy Feet of the true Supreme Being. Itis also known as Upasanaand Tariqat(worship .and

devotion). Emphasis is laid on Sant Sat Guru or SadhGuru or Their real Shabd forms.

Sant Sat Guruis He who has reached Sat Lokand Radhasoami Abode. Sadh Guruis He who hasattained Brahm or Par Brahmstage, and the devoteeswho have not yet reached this stage are called Sadhsor Satsangis.

The real form of Sant Sat Guru and Sadh Guruis Their Shabd form. They assume human form for

the purpose of imparting spiritual training and doinggood to Jivas, and effecting their salvation. If it isbelieved that a certain personage is a perfect Santor a Sadh, then no difference need be made betweenHim and Sat Purush (or Par-Brahm). Therefore, wheneversuch a personage makes His advent, His devoteestreat Him as Sat Purush (or Par-Brahm) and worshipand render service to Him, and perform His Arti thesame way as they would if they had actually met the

Supreme Being. By rendering service to Him, havingHis Darshan, listening to His discourses, engenderinglove for and faith in His Holy Feet, and performingthe practices taught by Him, Jiva-Atmaor Surat(spirit)will get detached from the snares of Manaand Maya, and will ascend to heavens and beyond, and will mergein the internal form or Shabd and will secure trueand perfect salvation.

    16. A seeker must find out the perfect Sant orSadh; he should continue his efforts till he meets Him.If he comes across any of His Satsangis or devotees, who has been fully benefited by His Darshan andSewa (service) and, having been initiated in Shabd

Marg1, is performing Abhyas, the seeker should engenderlove for such a devotee. He should learn from himthe secrets of the path, the stages thereon and themethod of performing Abhyas (devotional practice). He should commence this practice, adopting the Isht2

of the Holy Feet of Radhasoami who is the Lord ofall. Every Parmarthi should have a firm determinationto reach there. If his love, yearning and faith are sincereand firm, the true Supreme Being would, in His grace, grant him His Darshan one day, and complete his task.

    17. RADHASOAMI Nam was revealed by theSupreme Being Himself. When the humble devoteesof Soamiji Maharaj, as a result of their successfulAbhyas (devotional practices) and Satsang, came torealize His exalted position and immense spiritual powers, and when He too, in His grace and mercy, enabledthem to recognize Him, they started addressing Him

by the appellation of RADHASOAMI, the Name ofthe Original Abode from where He made His adventto this world, for showering His grace on Jivas inthis Kali Yuga.

    18. The principles prevalent among the followersof Upsn and Tariqat (worship and devotion) cult, are also observed in Sant Mat. No distinction is madebetween the perfect Sat Guru or Preceptor and theSupreme Being. Hence Sat Guru is addressed bythe appellation, which is the true and real name ofthe region, whence He is pleased to come here.Radhasoami and Surat Shabd have the sameconnotation. As ocean is to its waves, so is Shabd

to its Dhun(resonance), and what a beloved is toa lover, Shabd is to Surat.

    19. The followers of this Faith, who practise SuratShabd Yoga would, in a short time, come to realizewhat a rare and precious gift they have secured. Theywould see for themselves that their salvation is beingworked out day by day. The goals, status, source, origin, reach and access of all the extant religions ofthe world, will automatically be revealed or unfolded

to them.20. This Faith and its Abhyas are meant specially

for those who have a longing for meeting the trueSupreme Being and who are sincerely keen aboutthe welfare and salvation of their souls. It is not intendedfor, nor would it appeal to, those who are after the.objects of the world, name, fame, and learning, andfor whom religion is only a means of livelihood. Onthe other hand, they would try their utmost to calumniate

and ridicule these teachings, the reason being thatthey are afraid lest, by acting upon them, they bedeprived of worldly and sensual pleasures and theirlivelihood may be affected. They would make everyeffort to retard the propagation of this Religion, sothat those whom they have kept under delusions andentangled in various kinds of worship and made thesource of their livelihood, may not leave their fold, and their worship and income may not be affected.

mysteries of His own sphere and the mode of attainingit by means of Surat Shabd practice. It behoves Jivasto develop love for His Holy Feet.

By the performance of this practice, the mindwill get subdued. There is no other way in this KaliYuga for purifying and quieting the mind and raisingit to higher regions. The goals of all the religionsprevalent in this world reach up to the first or, at themost, the second stage of Sants. If the Abhys of

Surat Shabd Yoga is performed methodically, the mindand spirit will be purified, and, catching hold of Shabd, will ascend to celestial regions represented in thehuman microcosm. Leaving Pind, the region of nine
