In general universities should be independent of software
companies
However the demand on graduates with knowledge in
architecture and application in leading software technology
cannot be ignored as part of an education which meets
practical standards
Ivory tower or product specialist?

The demand for BI students has surpassed the supply
The foundational skills are still the most critical for new BI technology
Employers were not satisfied with the graduates‘ practical skills
Students should have experiences with real data, real tools, reporting, and dashboard

Datawarehouse: More than RDBMS?

Two Approaches to realize the ‘X‘ in DB+X
Database
Modeling OLAP ETL
Data

Scheduling
Monitoring
A: DW as a application on top of the DB with integrated tools
B: SQL Based Approach with a set ofloosely coupled tools (e.g. best ofbreed)

SAP BW on HANA: Architecture
SAP BW
SAP Business Warehouse
– Is a DW application on top of a RDMS
– In the market since 1997
– Originally a “DWH for SAP R/3“ now a featurecomplete EDW platform
– Today > 15000 customers (4000+ on HANA)
3 Editions
– SAP BW on AnyDB More or less legacy
– SAP BW on HANA
– BW4/HANA The choice for new installations
– (see details on next slide)

BW on AnyDB vs. BW on HANA

BW on HANA vs. BW4/HANA
BW on HANA
• New objects have been developed in BW on HANA to leverage the HANA platform
• New objects replace old objects like InfoCubes developed for BW on AnyDB
• New objects are recommended, but old objects still functionable (compatibility)
– Upgrade path for existing installations to BW on HANA
– Customers can then subsequently optimize their models and architecture for HANA in own
speed
BW4/HANA
• Can be (simplified) seen as BW on HANA but without old objects
• Clean new system, streamlined for HANA only
• Perfect for new installations
• Will be the future
• Our curriculum: Is BW4/HANA ready, as we only use new objects!
Problem– Several BI clients of the manufacturer with frequent changes, unclear product strategy,
partly high administrative overhead (additional servers, user management)
Solution– Focus on use cases OLAP Analysis and Dashboards
– Use tool that connect to SAP BW directly (without additional layer)
– Query as universal point of eaccess to BW data
SAP BO Analysis for Office– Excel Addin
– Ad Hoc Analysis, OLAP
SAP BO Design Studio– Design of Dashboards
– Web (HTML5)
– Mobile
Possible Extension: SAP Lumira– Self Service BI
– Visualisation
