Introduction

• What Is SAP?

– SAP (Systems, Applications and

Products in Data Processing), started

in 1972 by five ex-IBMers, is a software

manufacturer that produces a self-titled

ERP application

– ERP (Enterprise resource planning)software provides functionality to

support businesses and governments’

operational needs

– Today, SAP is the 3rd largest software

manufacturer in the world [1]

• Quick Facts

– As of July 2014, SAP had over 261,000customers in 190 countries

– Of all companies in the Fortune 500,

86% ran SAP

– Of all the world’s transactional revenue,

74% touches an SAP system

– FY 2013 revenue was 16.9 billion EUR

• SAP provides solutions for 25industries and 11 lines ofbusiness. [2]

• Industry solutions include:

– Aerospace & Defense

– Defense & Security

– Public Sector(state/local/federal)

– Banking

– Healthcare

– Oil & Gas

• Lines of Business include:

– Finance – Sales

– Sourcing and Procurement

– Supply Chain

The 30,000 Foot View

• Business processes and functions arerealized through a combination of standardSAP transactions and customizations

• Industry specific business functions areactivated with industry solutions like “SAPfor Public Sector.” These functions, alongwith baseline functionality, are thenconfigured to the client’s requirements by

SAP functional experts• SAP is customized further by developerscoding in ABAP (Advanced Business Application Programming) – SAP’s object-oriented programming language of choice

• In SAP parlance, system customizations arecategorized as reports, interfaces,conversions, enhancements and forms(RICEF)

• Note: we don’t use the word “modification”since it has its own special meaning in SAPdevelopment. That’s a whole otherdiscussion. Customization assumes we areusing SAP-delivered products and tools.



What’s Funds Management?

• SAP Funds Management (FM) is

used by many Public sector

agencies to prepare, control and

execute budget .

• When people refer to FM, they are

really referring to SAP PublicSector Management (PSM).

• Public Sector Management’s

components include:

– US Federal Government

– Funds Management – Grants Management (optional)

…but how does FM work?



Appendix I: SAP RICEF Defined

• Reports include financial

statements and status of funds

reports

• Interfaces include import and

export of system transactional

data• Conversions will take legacy

system data and convert it into

SAP transactional data

• Enhancements are delivered by

SAP and represent areas where

customers can insert their own

customized logic

• Forms include menus, screens

and other UI elements customized

for the client
