SANTIAGO LEADSBALLYDOYLE WHITEWASH

It was labelled as wide-open, but in the end Saturday=s G1

Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby at The Curragh proved anything but

as Aidan O=Brien was in dominating form yet again with

Santiago (Ire) (Authorized {Ire}) leading home a remarkable

stable one-two-three-four. Sent off the clear 2-1 favourite

coming back eight days after his emphatic win in the G2 Queen=s

Vase at Royal Ascot, the bay was always travelling with supreme

ease anchored towards the rear by a confident Seamie

Heffernan. Cutting through the pack and getting an ideal split to

arrive at the front two out, he was pushed all the way to the line

by Tiger Moth (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) but toughed it out to prevail

by a head, with five lengths back to Dawn Patrol (Ire) (Galileo

{Ire}) and another 1 1/4 lengths to Order of Australia (Ire)

(Australia {GB}).

Delivering a 14th renewal to his trainer and a fourth for his

personal resume, Heffernan said, AI was always comfortable.

He=s a tough horse--I would have liked to have had a better

draw and a cleaner slot and I took a gamble in dropping him in,

but if you go forward and you get trapped wide he=s a horse that

gets competitive. I always wanted to switch him off and ride him

for luck, because he=s a generous horse and it worked out.

When I put him in gear, he picked up. He had been showing

plenty at home, but what he had been showing at home was

guts. He=s a lovely horse with a big heart and you can=t ask for

any more.@

MAGICAL RETURNS IN THE PRETTY POLLY Back from the brink of retirement following her G1 Champion

S. victory at Ascot in October, Magical (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) is the

next A-list celebrity to step into the limelight in 2020 as she gets

reacquainted with top-flight action in Sunday=s G1 Alwasmiyah

Pretty Polly S. at The Curragh. Ballydoyle=s high achiever has a

stunning record at this venue, having won four of her six starts

here including last year=s G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup by seven

lengths and generally is tough to beat in her native country as

she proved when taking Leopardstown=s G1 Irish Champion S. in

September. She is joined by stablemate Fleeting (Ire) (Zoffany

{Ire}), who has the benefit of an outing having been second in

the course-and-distance G2 Mooresbridge S. June 12.

If Magical is not at least near her top level, Jessie Harrington

could be set to take advantage with Jon Kelly=s 3-year-old

Cayenne Pepper (Ire) (Australia {GB}), who gets a 12-pound

weight-for-age swing. She showed her quality at two when

taking the G3 Flame of Tara S. over a mile here in August before

finishing fourth in the G1 Fillies= Mile at Newmarket in October.

Acting as support to the feature is the G2 Weatherbys Ireland

Greenlands S. and Denis Hogan=s Make a Challenge (Ire)

(Invincible Spirit {Ire}) bids to cement his place at the forefront

of the domestic sprinters. Cont. p10

Seamie Heffernan & Santiago | Racing Post

G1 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby Cont. from p1

Santiago had started out with seconds over seven furlongs at

Leopardstown and Galway last summer, the latter of which

takes on an altogether different light coming behind Alpine Star

(Ire) (Sea the Moon {Ger}) at the famed festival.

Beating Sunchart (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}) over a mile at Listowel in

September, he was untried in the top latter-season tests and

consequently arrived at Royal Ascot under the radar to all bar

those closest to him tackling the Queen=s Vase. After dismissing

the solid yardstick Berkshire Rocco (Fr) (Sir Percy {GB}) as the

pair pulled clear in that 14-furlong contest, he was thrust into

the limelight and then into the heat of this battle with the

stable=s leading Galileos diverted to Epsom.

Travelling notably strongly in the final quintet with Heffernan

happy to keep tabs on the Jim Bolger runner Fiscal Rules (Ire)

(Make Believe {GB}) dead ahead, the pace was kept honest

courtesy of Iberia (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) who was placed on the

front to draw the potential sprint out of the race. As the field

turned for home, there was a fanning out from the fence which

gifted Heffernan the space he needed to emerge into contention

and he was at the head of affairs as quickly as he had been at

the Royal meeting last week passing the two pole. While

everything in his immediate vicinity was instantly covered, out

of range to his left was Tiger Moth with Emmet McNamara

keeping him wide for his effort. It became a battle in the final

furlong and for a brief spell it looked as if the 11-1 shot would

provide his rider with a fairytale first Classic, but Santiago drew

on that extra dimension to take the glory.

O=Brien, who had saddled the first three in this in 2002, 2007,

2010, 2011, 2014 and 2019, majors in humility at all times and

was not breaking the pattern despite this incredible

achievement. AThey ran good races, so I=m delighted,@ was his

unassuming response to another milestone in his career.

ASantiago is a lovely, straightforward horse who likes to take his

time in his races and Seamus got a lovely run through. We

thought he could be a Leger horse and I think that looks a lovely

race for him, but we are going to look forward to him for next

year too. He=s a lovely, clean-winded, honest horse.@

Tiger Moth had beaten Dawn Patrol and Order of Australia as

O=Brien also saddled the first four home in a 10-furlong

Leopardstown maiden June 9 that in this unusual season takes

on the shape of a true Derby trial. Dawn Patrol met interference

en route to finishing off strongly here and the Ballydoyle handler

was understandably full of hope that they can also emerge as

forces later on this term. AThe next two are lovely horses and

are two babies--they are progressing and in a month=s time we

think they will be even better,@ he added.

G1 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby Cont. MV Magnier, speaking by Zoom videolink, added, AI=m

delighted for Seamus. I didn=t realise that he=s 47, but he=s riding

very well and has been working in Ballydoyle for a long time. He

deserves it. The Irish Derby is the pinnacle of Irish racing. It is a

stallion-making race and many great champions have won it

over the years.@

Pedigree Notes Santiago, who becomes the first Classic winner for his sire, was

bought in utero by Robert Nataf of Horse France as he

purchased the 4-year-old filly Wadyhatta (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire})

for i275,000 at Arqana=s 2016 Summer Sale. The listed-placed

second dam Thamarat (GB) (Anabaa) produced three black-type

performers, including last year=s G1 Prix du Jockey Club third

Motamarris (Ire) (Le Havre {Ire}) who looks a potential star this

season, and the multiple listed-placed Riqa (GB) (Dubawi {Ire})

who is in turn the dam of the G3 Prix de Cabourg, G3 Prix de

Meautry and G3 Prix du Petit Couvert scorer Tantheem (GB)

(Teofilo {Ire}).

Thamarat is a half-sister to the G1 Prix Jacques le Marois and

G1 Prix Jean Prat-winning sire Tamayuz (GB) (Nayef), while the

G3 Prix de Flore-winning fourth dam Allez Les Trois (Riverman)

produced the G1 Prix du Jockey-Club hero and sire Anabaa Blue

(GB) by Thamarat=s sire Anabaa. Allez Les Trois is kin to the G1

Prix de l=Arc de Triomphe heroine and incredible producer

Urban Sea (Miswaki), which links Santiago back to the 2001

winner of this race, Galileo, as well as to Sea the Stars (Ire) who

shares Cape Cross (Ire) as a sire with Santiago=s dam Wadyhatta.

This is also the family of the brilliant G1 2000 Guineas hero and

sire King=s Best, involving the dam line of the German-bred blue

hen Allegretta (GB) (Lombard {Ger}). Wadyhatta=s as-yet

unraced 2-year-old filly by Frankel (GB) named La Joconde (Ire)

was purchased by the Broadhurst Agency for 850,000gns at the

Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1, while she also has a

yearling filly by that sire.

BUCKHURST ON TOP IN THE ALLEGED After the 2018 G1 Irish Derby hero Latrobe (Ire) (Camelot

{GB}) was taken out, The Curragh=s G3 Dubai Duty Free Jumeirah

Creekside Hotel Alleged S. turned into a three-runner affair and

was accordingly a renewal where tactics proved influential as

Buckhurst (Ire) (Australia {GB}) made all under Wayne Lordan.

Saddled with a three-pound penalty as a result of his win in the

course-and-distance G3 International S. and G3 Royal Whip S.,

Lloyd Williams=s 4-year-old had the edge as soon as his rider

committed to front-running duties. Despite the late press of the

10-11 market-leader Sir Dragonet (Ire) (Camelot {GB}), the 13-8

second favourite was unrelenting and hit the line with a 1 1/2-

length advantage as Numerian (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire})

ended up 1 1/4 lengths back.

Buckhurst, who was second tackling a mile and a half in

Leopardstown=s G3 Kilternan S. in September and when

returning over a mile in Navan=s Listed Heritage S. June 10, is a

tough customer with conditions to suit and he was in his

element here and is being earmarked for the G1 Tattersalls Gold

Cup next month.

AHe=s a lovely horse and no-one wanted to go, so knowing he=s

an easy ride I let him potter--it=s his first time making the

running, so I wasn=t sure how he=d be but luckily he=s a

straightforward colt,@ Lordan said. AHe quickened well and won

well and seems to be improving.@

Pedigree Notes Buckhurst is out of the Bloomsbury Stud-bred Artful (Ire)

(Green Desert), who also produced the Listed Rose Bowl S.

winner Duplicity (GB) (Cadeaux Genereux {GB}). The second

dam is the listed-winning Gold Dodger (Slew O=Gold), whose G3

C. L. Weld Park S.-winning daughter Chintz (Ire) (Danehill Dancer

{Ire}) is in turn responsible for the G1 Poule d=Essai des Poulains

and G1 Sussex S. hero The Gurkha (Ire) from a mating with

Australia=s sire Galileo (Ire). Gold Dodger is also the second dam

of the multiple group 1-placed Savile Row (NZ) (Makfi {GB}),

whose unraced half-sister Charmeuse (NZ) (O=Reilly {NZ}) is the

dam of the G1 Rosehill Guineas runner-up Arrogant (NZ) (Ocean

Park {NZ}).

The third dam is the G3 Prix Cleopatre winner Brooklyn=s

Dance (Fr) (Shirley Heights {GB}), whose six black-type winners

include the G1 Prix de l=Arc de Triomphe heroine Solemia (Ire)

(Poliglote {GB}). Cont. p5

RETURN PAYMENT On this weekend last year, Twilight Payment (Ire) (Teofilo

{Ire}) was upstaging Lloyd Williams=s Latrobe (Ire) (Camelot {GB})

in the G2 Curragh Cup and in a twist of fate on Saturday, the

veteran returned to the same course and distance in that

owner=s silks to make amends in the G3 Comer Group

International Vintage Crop S. Runner-up in the Listed Saval Beg

Levmoss S. over this 14-furlong trip at Leopardstown June 14,

the 15-8 favourite was positioned on the front end by Wayne

Lordan, who was to complete an evening treble, and sapped his

rivals= energy one by one en route to a 2 1/2-length success.

Barbados (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) held on for second, with last year=s

G1 Irish Derby hero Sovereign (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) a half length

way on this belated comeback.

Given the new connections, it is no surprise that Joseph

O=Brien is looking at a possible return to the G1 Melbourne Cup

in which he was 11th in November, COVID-19 permitting. AHe=s

a hardy horse. He got his own way in front and is a tough horse

to pass,@ his trainer said. AWe put the cheekpieces back on today

as he was a little bit lazy at Leopardstown and I think they were

a help. He could possibly go to Melbourne, but the way things

are at the moment we don=t know if that is going to be an option

with travel restrictions.@

Twilight Payment may not be getting any younger, but the ex-

Jim Bolger representative is not losing any of his old zest for

racing and this was a fifth black-type success and a career-best.

Beaten less than four lengths in the Flemington showcase in

November, he has put up only two below-par performances

from 16 starts since being gelded in 2017.

Pedigree Notes The dam Dream On Buddy (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}), who also

produced the G2 Debutante S. runner-up Bandiuc Eile (Ire) (New

Approach {Ire}), is a daughter of the dual listed winner and G3

Princess Royal S. runner-up My Renee (Kris S.). That makes her a

half-sister to the Bolger celebrity Banimpire (Ire) (Holy Roman

Emperor {Ire}), winner of five group races including the G2

Ribblesdale S. and placed in the G1 Irish Oaks and G1 Prix de

l=Opera. Cont. p6

LAYING DOWN THE LAW All eyes were on Shadwell=s potential new star turn Mubakker

(Speightstown) ahead of Saturday=s G3 Betfair Backs Racing

Welfare Chipchase S., but it was the veteran sprinters who held

sway in the Newcastle gloom headed by Judicial (Ire) (Iffraaj

{GB}). Campaigned mainly over five furlongs prior to his win in

the Listed Golden Rose S. over this six at Lingfield in November,

Elite Racing Club=s evergreen 8-year-old had confirmed that he

was again ready for extra distance when subsequently second to

Far Above (Ire) (Farhh {GB}) reverting to his usual trip in

Newmarket=s G3 Palace House S. June 6. Settled behind the

leading duo in an easy rhythm by Callum Rodriguez, the 9-1 shot

was committed approaching the final furlong and readily put his

stamp on the race en route to a 1 1/2-length defeat of the

smooth-travelling Brando (GB) (Pivotal {GB}), who nosed out

Major Jumbo (GB) (Zebedee {GB}) for second.

AHe ran a massive race on his last run behind a serious horse,@

Rodriguez said of the half-brother to the sprinting star Marsha

(Ire) (Acclamation {GB}). AHe has done most of his racing over

five and the last two times he was a bit behind the bridle and

finishing his races, so we thought it was time to step up.@

Pedigree Notes Judicial, who first came to the fore when capturing Sandown=s

G3 Sprint S. in July 2018, had added to that black-type tally on

two of his last four starts in the Listed Beverley Bullet S. in

August and in the aforementioned Golden Rose on the

Polytrack. Cont. p7

LIMATO IN CONTROL AGAIN AT

NEWMARKET When it comes to seven furlongs and a fast surface, Paul

Jacobs=s Limato (Ire) (Tagula {Ire}) is one tough nut to crack and

everything fell perfectly for the 8-year-old as he registered back-

to-back successes in Newmarket=s G3 Betway Criterion S. on

Saturday. Always travelling like the winner racing in rear of

mid-division early as Mubtasim (Ire) (Arcano {Ire}) forged clear,

the 5-1 shot was short of room two out but Adam Kirby was in

no hurry and when freed got to that leader with ease passing

the furlong pole. Cont. p8

Limato | Racing Post

G3 Criterion S. Cont.

Drawing away up the rising ground, he had

3 1/2 lengths to spare over Happy Power (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}),

with Turjomaan (War Front) 3/4 of a length away in third.

Trainer Henry Candy has never made any secret of his regard

for Limato and was happy to pay tribute to the stable star once

again. ANot too many horses win a black-type race every year up

to the age of eight and today he looked like an up-and-coming 3-

year-old out there,@ he said of the sprightly veteran, who was

recording an eighth pattern-race victory. AHe is made of iron. He

was in wonderful form, but I didn=t have the confidence to think

he=d run as well as that. He loves this track and loves the ground

and runs really well when he=s fresh. He does pretty much the

same sort of thing at home and works on his own--I=ve got a job

to get a saddle on him beforehand, but down at the start you

can do anything you like with him. He has a fantastic

constitution and although he=s not Group 1 anymore, I=ve never

had a horse stay at that level for so long and I don=t think many

others have either. He=s very special.@

Prior to this, Limato had run eight times over this trip when

the ground was good or firmer and had won on five of those

occasions, including two renewals of this town=s G2 Challenge S.,

the G1 Prix de la Foret on Chantilly=s turning track in 2016 and

the 2015 G2 Park S. at Doncaster. Also successful in the G1 July

Cup over six on the July Course here and runner-up to Mecca=s

Angel (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) on his sole try at five in the 2016

G1 Nunthorpe S., the bay is something of a cult figure with good

reason. Unfortunately for him, he came up against good-to-soft

ground and a staunch rival in Mustashry (GB) (Tamayuz {GB})

when runner-up in the Challenge here in October, but this

display gives cause for belief that 2020 could be his year for the

treble in that particular event as long as the weather is

favourable.

Pedigree Notes Limato=s dam Come April (GB) (Singspiel {Ire}) is a daughter of

So Admirable (GB) (Suave Dancer), who is a full-sister to the G1

Eclipse S. hero Compton Admiral (GB) and a half to the G1

the G2 Ribblesdale S. runner-up Twyla Tharp (Ire) (Sadler=s

winning The Fugue (GB) (Dansili {GB}). Come April also has the

unraced 3-year-old colt Hakkinen (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and

NKOSIKAZI TAKES THE HOPPINGS Newcastle=s G3 Betfair Exchange Hoppings Fillies= S. lost lustre

with the scratching of the unbeaten Aloe Vera (GB) (Invincible

Spirit {Ire}) and Tom Marquand duly took advantage of a tactical

affair to steer Nkosikazi (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}) to a vital Pattern-

race success on Saturday. Having landed a 10-furlong handicap

at Redcar on her 5-year-old bow June 18, Olivia Hoare=s grey set

a moderate tempo which led to the 5-4 favourite Virgin Snow

(GB) (Gleneagles {Ire}) pulling in behind. Cont. p9

Nkosikazi proves fleetest in the Hoppings Fillies= S. | Racing Post

G3 Hoppings Fillies= S. Cont.

Joined and headed by that daughter of Snow Fairy (Ire)

(Intikhab) two out, the 9-4 second favourite regained the

advantage in the last furlong as that rival=s tank emptied. At the

line, Nkosikazi had 2 1/2 lengths to spare, with Virgin Snow

getting her illustrious dam=s first black-type 1 1/2 lengths ahead

of Look Around (GB) (Kingman {GB}).

Initially with Brian Meehan, Nkosikazi was thought capable of

an ambitious tilt at the 2018 G1 Coronation S. as a maiden but

was soundly beaten in 10th before her sights were lowered.

Transferred to William Haggas at the end of that season, she

built up a promising profile with third placings in a Premier

Fillies= H. here and Listed River Eden Fillies= S. at Lingfield in

October before finishing 12th in Deauville=s Prix Lyphard on the

Polytrack in November. Her two successful outings in 2020 owe

as much to skillful placing by William Haggas than her ability and

Marquand had it in mind beforehand to get away with soft

fractions. AIt was tactical in our favour,@ he said. AI was a bit

worried how soft a lead we=d get, but I knew Nkosikazi would

stay.@

Pedigree Notes Nkosikazi is a half-sister to last year=s G2 Superlative S.

runner-up and G2 Champagne S. third Juan Elcano (GB) (Frankel

{GB}), who was fifth in the G1 2000 Guineas this month. The

dam Whatami (GB) (Daylami {Ire}) is kin to the G3 Premio Sergio

Cumani winner Whazzis (GB) (Desert Prince {Ire}) and a

full-sister to the Listed Chesham S. winner Whazzat (GB), who is

in turn the dam of the G2 Mill Reef S. scorer and G1 Prix

Maurice de Gheest runner-up James Garfield (Ire) (Exceed and

Excel {Aus}). The third dam is the excellent producer Eljazzi

(Artaius), whose G3 Blandford S.-winning daughter Chiang Mai

(Ire) (Sadler=s Wells) produced the G1 Pretty Polly S. heroine

Chinese White (Ire) by Daylami=s half-brother Dalakhani (Ire).

Eljazzi is also the dam of the G1 Prix de Diane heroine and

stellar broodmare Rafha (GB) (Kris {GB}), whose progeny list is

headed by the G1 Haydock Sprint Cup hero and leading sire

Invincible Spirit (Ire) and the Listed Empress S. scorer Massarra

(GB) (Danehill) whose clutch of smart performers include the G1

Gran Criterium winner Nayarra (Ire) from a mating with

Successful in last year=s Listed Norsk Derby here, Privilegiado

may have been 12 1/2 lengths off Ghaiyyath (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire})

in Meydan=s G3 Dubai Millennium S., but he still managed third

place in that Feb. 20 contest before running eighth in the G2

Dubai City of Gold Mar. 7. Out twice at Klampenborg in May, the

chestnut looked to have gone off the boil when finishing eighth

on both occasions with the latter being in the G3 Scandinavian

Open Championship. Held up in mid-division early with a strong

pace to run at, he whittled away at the front-runners and after

working his way to the front approaching the final furlong

asserted for a career-best.

Pedigree Notes Privilegiado, who was becoming the sixth individual group

winner for his sire, is out of the listed-placed Scarlett=s Pride (Fr)

(Singspiel {Ire}) who had already produced the dual listed-placed

Libello (Ire) (Archipenko). This is the family of the G1 Prix du

Jockey-Club hero and leading sire Hernando (Fr), the G1 Prix

Lupin winner Johann Quatz (Fr) (Sadler=s Wells), G1 Preis der

Diana heroine Well Timed (Ger) (Holy Roamn Emperor {Ire}) and

the G1 Hong Kong Cup scorer Akeed Mofeed (GB) (Dubawi

{Ire}).

Sunday=s Previews Cont. from p1

He looked in a good place when taking the Listed Sole Power

Sprint S. over five furlongs at Naas last Saturday and has shown

enough to suggest he is at least a match for the June 20 G1

Diamond Jubilee S. fifth Speak In Colours (GB) (Excelebration

{Ire}).

Also on Sunday, Godolphin=s Old Persian (GB) (Dubawi {Ire})

bids for a third top-level success and a first in Europe having

been found an ideal opening in a tepid renewal of the G1 Grand

Prix de Saint-Cloud. On a card in which the operation=s TDN

Rising Star Persian King (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) looks to get back to

winning ways in the G2 Prix du Muguet, the Charlie Appleby-

trained 5-year-old meets the May 31 G2 Grand Prix de Chantilly

winner and June 14 G1 Prix Ganay runner-up Way To Paris (GB)

(Champs Elysees {GB}) and last year=s second Ziyad (GB) (Rock of

Gibraltar {Ire}). Old Persian can be hit-and-miss, but on his best

day he is near the international elite as he proved when taking

last year=s G1 Dubai Sheema Classic and the GI Northern Dancer

Turf S. Rejuvenated after a break having signed off with a poor

11th in the GI Breeders= Cup Turf, the stalwart will probably not

find a softer Group 1 anywhere in Britain, France or Ireland this

year.

AOld Persian enjoyed a nice winter off out in Dubai after doing

a lot of travelling last year,@ Appleby said. AIt was a disappointing

run at the Breeders= Cup, but it came at the end of a long season

and the way the race panned out didn=t suit him. He has been

freshened up for hopefully a nice European campaign over the

summer and we have been pleased with his preparation. If he

brings his A-game, he will be very competitive.@

Persian King was beaten on his keenly-anticipated return in

the Listed Prix de Montretout over a mile at Chantilly June 10

and the Muguet looks a good fit for last year=s G1 Poule d=Essai

des Poulains hero and G1 Prix du Jockey Club runner-up.

Standing in the way is the talent of Gerard Augustin-Normand=s

impressive G3 Prix Bertrand du Breuil winner Pretreville (Fr)

(Acclamation {GB}), who had last year=s G2 Prix Dollar and G2

Premio Roma winner Skalleti (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}) five lengths

back in third in that May 18 Chantilly contest. Jean-Claude

Seroul=s Skalleti has a four-pound swing here and has that

sharpener under his belt, while Persian King=s trainer Andre

Fabre also pitches in Lady Bamford=s G3 Prix Chloe winner

Suphala (Fr) (Frankel {GB}) to ensure this is a proper test for his

Classic hero.

PRIX DU JOCKEY CLUB FOR OCEAN

ATLANTIQUE Listed winner and >TDN Rising Star= Ocean Atlantique

(American Pharoah) will run in the G1 Prix du Jockey Club at

Chantilly on July 5 instead of the G1 Epsom Derby the day prior,

Racing Post reported on Saturday. A winner at second asking at

Saint-Cloud, Ocean Atlantique was second in the May 14 G3 Prix

la Force and rebounded to take the Listed Prix de Suresnes by

five lengths on May 31. If successful, the bay would be the first

Andre Fabre-trained Prix du Jockey Club hero for Coolmore

partners Derrick Smith, Michael Tabor and Sue Magnier.

Coolmore already has six Aidan O=Brien-trained chances in the

Blue Riband at Epsom. Cont. p11

MANDURO SUCCUMBS TO HEART ATTACK Highweight Manduro (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}BMandellicht {Ire},

by Be My Guest), sustained a fatal heart attack at Haras du Logis

on Saturday, Darley announced. The five-time highweight was

18 and stood for €7,000 at Haras du Logis this year. Bred by Rolf

Brunner, the half-brother to SW, G1 German Oaks third, and

Group 1 producer Mandela (Ger) (Acatenango {Ger}) brought

€130,000 at the 2003 Baden-Baden September Yearling Sale and

would race his entire career in the colours of Baron Georg von

Ullmann.

Two-for-two in his juvenile season and named Germany=s

champion 2-year-old colt after a win in the 2004 G3 Preis des

Winterfavoriten, Manduro won two of his three appearances at

three, including the G3 Preis der Deutschen Einheit. Transferred

from Peter Schiergen to Andre Fabre prior to his 4-year-old bow,

the French highweighted older horse that year saluted in the

2006 G2 Prix d=Harcourt and was never worse than third in

seven more starts in 2006, five in Group 1 company.

At five, Manduro was the finished article and swept all before

him in a five-for-five campaign before injury derailed his Arc bid.

Starting off with a win in the G3 Earl of Sefton S., Manduro

earned his first Group 1 tally in the G1 Prix d=Ispahan, and

claimed the G1 Prince of Wales=s S. and G1 Prix Jacques le

Marois in succession. His final victory was back at

ParisLongchamp in the G2 Prix Foy before injury forced his

retirement with a record of 18-10-3-4 with $1,990,563 in

earnings.

He was named the French highweighted older horse from 7-9

1/2f and 9 1/2f-11f, as well as the highweighted older horse in

England from 9 1/2-11f.

Retired initially to Kildangan Stud in 2008, he stood at Dalham

Hall Stud in 2009, before serving three more years in Ireland.

The dark bay has been based in France since 2013.

Manduro is credited with three champions, and 35 black-type

winners--20 of them at group level. Leading his progeny is three-

time Group 1 winner Vazirabad (Fr), with Ribbons (GB), Charity

Line (Ire), Mandaean (GB), Ultra (Ire), and Braco Forte (Brz)

other top-shelf winners. The last-named is a two-time Group 1

winner in Brazil from Manduro=s single Southern Hemisphere

crop during the 2012/13 season. As a broodmare sire, Manduro

has seven black-type winners, three group winners and one

Group 1 heroineBG1 English 1000 Guineas winner Billesdon

Brook (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}).

Sam Bullard, Darley Director of Stallions, said, AManduro has

been a wonderful servant and will be greatly missed by the

team. He has been a reliable source of winners and stakes

performers for breeders."

MASK REGULATIONS FOR UK JOCKEYS

TWEAKED Face covering regulations for jockeys have been revised, the

British Horseracing Authority announced on Saturday. There has

been a hot spell in the UK as summer begins. The new protocols

are as follows:

$ Prior to a race, jockeys are required to wear a face

covering (which covers nose and mouth) from the time

they depart the changing area in the weighing room.

$ The wearing of face coverings during the race is

recommended. However, jockeys are permitted to pull

down the face covering in the moments immediately prior

to the start and for the duration of the race. For Flat races,

jockeys in the starting stalls should not turn to face any

neighbouring loaded jockey.

$ On completion of the race, the face covering, if lowered

for the race, should be raised before entering the horse

walk, whether mounted or on foot.

$ In the unsaddling area, once the jockey has assisted stable

staff with loosening any tack and is two metres away from

any other personnel, the face covering may be lowered

until the jockey returns to the changing area.

$ While the face covering is lowered, it is essential that

two-metre social distancing is maintained.

The BHA also announced that beginning on July 1,

international runners will be permitted to take part in heritage

handicaps on the Flat. Cont. p12

Off the mark by six lengths in a mile novice at Goodwood in

gelded in the winter. Coming back with a second to the decisive

to bowl along on the front end and came clear with Thunderous

Always holding that previously-unbeaten rival, he was firmly in

command at the line and Charlie Appleby said, AWe liked him as

a 2-year-old, but he had been very free to post on his last two

runs and so we took the decision to geld him and allow him to

develop mentally. AHe loped down to post today and a step up

in trip will help. He galloped well to the line and something like

the [G3] Gordon S. could be an option, as he=s won at

who was narrowly denied a winning debut when second over

Following the G3 Alleged S. success of Buckhurst (Ire)

(Australia {GB}) earlier on the card, Ancient Spirit duly backed up

the form of their encounter in Navan=s Listed Heritage S. June 10

with this game effort. Saddled with a penalty as a result of that

return to form under his new trainer, the ebullient bay was kept

wide initially by Shane Foley and that tamed his enthusiasm

sufficiently to accept restraint behind the leader Inhale (GB)

(Bated Breath {GB}). Despite hanging right in the straight, his

mind was concentrated by the emergence of Could Be King to

his left and after hitting the front a furlong out was unshakable

to the finish.

Successful in the 2018 G2 Mehl-Mulhens-Rennen (German

2000 Guineas) and G2 Oettingen-Rennen, Ancient Spirit has

begun to find his rhythm after spells with Chris Waller in

Australia and Jim Bolger. Second in the Listed Trigo S. on his first

start for his new yard at Leopardstown in October, he looks

ready for a step up in class on this evidence.

AIt=s nice to see him back up his win in Navan--he=s a lovely

horse and is growing in confidence getting his head in front,@

Kate Harrington said. AHe didn=t get things his own way today

and had to go after the horse in front. When he=s got there

Shane said he did it easy enough. He=s got a few entries in the

[G3] Meld and the [G1] Tattersalls Gold Cup. Mum will talk with

the owners and see where they want to go. We=ll go baby steps

with him, as he=s really only starting to get his confidence. He is

learning to settle better.@ Cont. p20

NEWSPAPEROFRECORDBACK IN THE HEADLINES

Klaravich Stables= Newspaperofrecord (Ire) (Lope de Vega{Ire}) returned to her sensational juvenile form and proved herdecisive score in the GIII Intercontinental S. last out was no flukewith a scintillating victory in the GI Just a Game S. at BelmontSaturday. Breaking on top, the even-money shot hustled out to aclear lead, doling out early splits of :23.79 and :48.1 withchampion stablemate and slight favorite, also at even-money,Uni (GB) (More Than Ready) biding her time back off the pace infourth. Newspaperofrecord was still well clear and under a handride from Irad Ortiz, Jr. on the backstretch, but Uni and fellowBrown runner and multiple graded winner Regal Glory (AnimalKingdom) were revving up entering the far turn. There was avery brief moment where it looked like her barnmates wouldmake a race of it exiting the bend, but Newspaperofrecordpractically laughed them off, powering clear with ease for adominant victory. Beau Recall (Ire) (Sir Prancealot {Ire}) got upfor second with Jose Ortiz aboard for an Ortiz-brother exactaand Uni held third. AWe trained her lightly and she has been training veryrelaxed,@ said trainer Chad Brown, who was winning his fourthstraight renewal of the Just a Game. ALast time, she was goingreally fast and was a little fresh. Irad was confident that he couldget her to rate a little bit. I loved our post today, off the fence alittle bit. Cont. p3

>BISOU= BACK TO HER BEST IN FLEUR DE LIS Champion Midnight Bisou (Midnight Lute) was back to her

best form Saturday at Churchill Downs, winning the GII Fleur de

Lis H. with ease in her first start back on U.S. soil since finishing

an ultra-game second in the Saudi Cup in February.

GI Kentucky Oaks victress Serengeti Empress (Alternation)

jetted straight to the lead, while favored Midnight Bisou bided

her time back in mid-pack through a brisk :23.18 first quarter.

Inched closer by Mike Smith, Midnight Bisou moved up into

third, while still several lengths off the pacesetter, as the half

went in :46.15. Charging up on the leader=s outside entering the

far turn, the Eclipse winner rocketed past Serengeti Empress at

the top of the lane and effortlessly cruised clear under a

motionless Smith to win for fun. Motion Emotion (Take Charge

Indy) held second with Another Broad (Include) in third and

Serengeti Empress faded to fourth. With her victory in the Fleur

de Lis, Midnight Bisou secured a spot in the starting gate for the

GI Breeders= Cup Distaff in November. Cont. p4

Chad Brown | Sarah Andrew

Newspaperofrecord cont. from p1

Brown continued, AThe last-minute showers didn't hurt us

either. We all know that she likes a little juice in the ground. It

was a good effort after three weeks. I was very proud of her. My

team has done a great job with her. She's never looked better.@

When asked what=s next, the conditioner said, "I'm going to

talk to [owner] Seth Klarman and see how she comes out of the

race. She's just had two big races back-to-back. With limited

mile races out there, she may be another one that has to face

the boys but I don't want to commit her to that yet.@

AGoing seven-eighths to a mile is good for her,@ said Ortiz, who

won five races at Belmont Saturday. AShe can go further, too,

and I would not be afraid to go a mile and a sixteenth. I just

followed Chad's instructions. She came back good and looks

healthy and had a really good run. We ended last year a little

disappointed, but she came back this year the right way. She's

two-for-two, so hopefully she keeps doing it."

As for Uni, Brown said, "Uni has had a few bumps along the

road. She needed some extra time off and had a late start. She

popped a splint and we had to pull that out; she missed a couple

of works. Although she's run okay with some give in the ground,

her best races really are on firm turf. Joel [Rosario] came back

and said she was out of sorts having to move early off a

moderate pace."

Undefeated during her 2018 juvenile campaign,

Newspaperofrecord won her debut, the GII Miss Grillo S. and

the GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf S. by a combined

20 lengths, all over yielding surfaces. Second to Concrete Rose

(Twirling Candy) in the GIII Edgewood S. at Churchill last term,

the bay completed the exacta behind her stablemate and

eventual Grade I winner Cambier Parc (Medaglia d=Oro) in the

nine-panel GIII Wonder Again S. here last summer. Fading to

ninth behind Concrete Rose in the 1 1/4-mile GI Belmont Oaks

Invitational S. last July, Newspaperofrecord was subsequently

shelved for the season and returned 11 months later in the

seven-panel Intercontinental on a yielding surface here June 6

She took the field from gate-to-wire, sailing home to an

effortless four-length success, good for a 103 Beyer Speed

Figure.

Pedigree Notes:

Newspaperofrecord is one of five Group 1 winners resulting

from crossing Lope de Vega (Ire) with daughters of Danehill and

his sons. A daughter of the English Group 3 winner Sunday

Times who also played the bridesmaid in the G1 Cheveley Park

S., Newspaperofrecord was preceded by the listed heroine

Classical Times (GB) (Lawman {Fr}). Her dam is a half-sister to

the SP dam of G1 Irish Derby hero Latrobe (Ire) Camelot {GB}),

runner-up in Australia=s G1 MacKinnon S., as well as Latrobe=s

SW & dual Classic-placed full-sister Pink Dogwood (Ire) and G3

Gladness S. heroine Diamond Fields (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}).

This is the extended family of MGSW and two-time G1 Prix de la

Foret second Majestic Times (Ire) (Bluebird). Sunday Times=s last

reported foal is the winning 3-year-old Gleneagles (Ire) filly Daily

Times (GB).

Midnight Bisou cont. from p1

AShe=s a really special mare,@ said Hall of Famer Steve

Asmussen. ATo come back, in that sort of style, is just

tremendous. She has such an amazing talent and such a great

relationship with Mike. She beat a wonderful-looking group of

mares. We have nothing but respect towards them.@

Smith expressed similar sentiments, saying, AShe=s just an

amazing mare. I actually took the lead a little before I wanted to.

We were planning on laying a little bit closer, but the way

Serengeti Empress was winging it on the front end, we were a

little further back. She=s just incredibly special.@

Midnight Bisou captured six of her seven starts last term,

including the GI Apple Blossom H., GI Ogden Phipps S. and

GI Personal Ensign S. She prepped for the Breeders= Cup with a

facile score in Belmont=s GII Beldame Invitational S. in

September and finished 1 1/2 lengths shy of Blue Prize (Arg)

(Pure Prize) when second in the Distaff at Santa Anita Nov. 2.

Scratched from the Fasig-Tipton November sale to stay in

training another season, Midnight Bisou was a never-in-doubt

winner of the Eclipse Award for top older dirt female. Making

her seasonal bow in the inaugural $20-million Saudi Cup Feb. 29,

the dark bay rallied up the rail to finish a valiant second to

fellow champion Maximum Security (New Year=s Day). Cont. p5

Tom=s d=Etat | Coady

Tom=s d=Etat continued to make his case for being the top

older male of 2020 with a blowout performance in Churchill=s

GII Stephen Foster S. coming on the heels of three straight wins,

including in last November=s GI Clark H. under the Twin Spires.

Allowing longshot Pirate's Punch

(Shanghai Bobby) to dictate

terms through initial fractions of

:23.89 and :48.13, the 7-year-old

loomed menacingly just to his

outside before overtaking the

pacesetter on the far turn

following six furlongs in 1:11.67.

Two lengths in front turning for

home, the 6-5 choice continued

to draw clear late. With rider

Miguel Mena throwing a few

crosses down the lane before

standing up a few strides before

the wire, Tom=s d=Etat was

absolutely dominant, never

leaving the outcome in doubt while crossing the wire well clear

of MGAW By My Standards. The final time of 1:47.30 was the

second-fastest time for the Stephen Foster, which is a Breeders'

Cup 'Win and You're in' for the GI Breeders' Cup Classic.

AWe knew coming into this race he was a fresh horse but [he]

ran so well fresh in the past,@ said trainer Al Stall, Jr. AThis will

set him up to be in good shape for the rest of the year. I think

he=ll benefit a lot from this race but we=ve sort of been waiting

for this horse to get into form

with the breaks in his races but

he=s finally got there. That was a

very impressive performance

today.@

Now riding a four-race win

streak, Tom=s d=Etat is lightly

raced for his age. He first made

it to the races as a 3-year-old

and, beset by various minor

setbacks, didn=t attempt his first

black-type event until December

of his 5-year-old season when he

won the Tenacious S. at Fair

Grounds. He had his most

productive and prolific season

last year as a 6-year-old when he captured the aforementioned

GI Clark, as well as Keeneland=s GII Hagyard Fayette S. and

Saratoga=s Alydar S. He was also placed in both the GII Alysheba

S. and that year=s edition of the Stephen Foster. Cont. p7

Alex G. Campbell, Jr.'s Mean Mary broke sharply from the

outside post, led the six-horse field throughout and ran off to an

eye-catching 5 1/4-length victory in the GII New York S. at

Belmont Saturday.

Victorious in her turf bow at Keeneland last October, the 4-

year-old was runner up in a Big A allowance the following month

before reeling off three consecutive wins at Gulfstream,

including the GIII La Prevoyante S. in January and the GIII Orchid

S. Mar. 28. Looking to remain undefeated in 2020, jockey Luis

Saez sent her straight to the front over a turf course listed as

firm despite a light rain shower earlier, and the duo lulled the

field to sleep with :25.11, :51.55 and 1:16.28 splits. In control

leaving the quarter pole, the homebred drew off late to post an

easy victory over My Sister Nat, who edged Feel Glorious.

"I had a lot of confidence in her today," Saez said. "She always

does everything right. Today, she was just galloping. The track

feels good today and I think the rain helped her. She was super

relaxed, even more so than her last race. She feels better now

than she did last time."

Winning trainer Graham Motion added, "You always wonder a

little bit about Florida; did she just suit that course? But this is so

different than running at Gulfstream. The way she did it was

pretty impressive. I worried a little bit. You always worry a little

bit with that much time away and I wanted to keep her fresh,

but she also had to be fit.@ Cont. p8

Grade I winner Firenze Fire returned to winning ways with a

game victory in the GII True North S. Saturday at Belmont.

Hammered down to even-money with the scratch of fellow top-

level scorer Promises Fulfilled (Shackleford), the bay tracked

from third as Yorkton was pushed along by Stan the Man

through an opening quarter in :22.84. The top two were neck

and neck turning for home, but Firenze Fire was just hitting his

best stride and charged past in the lane to win in a sharp final

time of 1:15.53.

"He's a nice horse,@ trainer Kelly Breen said. AWhen things click

like that, it doesn't get much better than that. For sure, he

needed that last race. I think the track had something to do with

it last time out. He ran fast. He's run fast races before.

Hopefully, we can move onward to Saratoga and find a nice spot

for him there. The goal is to get him to the Breeders' Cup.@

"He did everything right,@ rider Irad Ortiz said. AWe broke and

got into a good position and I was just waiting. Turning for

home, I asked him and he responded really well. We were close

to the pace, but I just held him together. I didn't want to be

fighting, so I just tried to let him relax and he really responded

when I asked."

Winner of the 2017 GI Champagne S., Firenze Fire finished

second in both the GI Forego S. and GI Vosburgh Invitational S.

at Saratoga last summer, finishing three lengths behind

champion Mitole (Eskendereya) in the former and a nose short

of Imperial Hint (Imperialism) in the latter. Fifth to Mitole in the

GI Breeders= Cup Sprint at Santa Anita Nov. 2, he rattled off

three straight wins in Penn National=s Fabulous Strike S. Nov. 27,

Aqueduct=s Gravesend S. Dec. 22 and Laurel=s GIII General

George S. Feb. 15. Transferred from Jason Servis to Kelly Breen

after the former was indicted by the FBI for performance-

enhancing drugs, Firenze Fire could only manage fourth in a

sloppy renewal of the GI Carter H. June 6, run at Belmont

instead of its traditional spot on Aqueduct=s GII Wood Memorial

S. card, which was canceled due to the pandemic.

Pedigree Notes:

Firenze Fire is the only graded scorer and one of just two

black-type victors by Poseidon=s Warrior. He is the first foal out

of My Every Wish, who has since produced the stakes-placed -

year-old filly Firenze Freedom (Istan); a yearling colt named Just

Leo (Poseidon=s Warrior); and a Speightstown colt born Apr. 27

of this year. The winner also hails from the family of MGISW sire

Shackleford (Forestry) and Grade I victress Lady Joanne

(Orientate).

Dean Martini continued strongly into the stretch, rolling clear

of his competition, and held off a late charge from South Bend

to score. Champion Storm the Court rounded out the trifecta.

Starting his career in California with Peter Miller and owners

Rockingham Ranch and David Bernsen, Dean Martini hit the

romped by 6 3/4 lengths in a $50,000 maiden claimer at

Stonestreet Stables homebred Cazadero made good on his

>TDN Rising Star= tag with a dominant victory in the

GIII Bashford Manor S. at Churchill Downs Saturday. Demolishing

the field by 8 3/4 lengths in his five-panel unveiling beneath the

Twin Spires May 29, the Steve Asmussen pupil was heavily

favored to repeat in this first juvenile graded stakes of the

season. Breaking sharply, Cazadero tracked from a two-wide

fourth as longshot County Final (Oxbow) blazed through a :21.24

first quarter. Ranging up two wide on the far turn, the bay took

charge in mid-stretch and powered clear under a vigorous hand

ride from Ricardo Santana to win as he pleased.

AHe=s been a very fast horse in his training and handled

everything very well today,@ said conditioner Steve Asmussen.

AHe was a later foal but we knew he was wickedly fast,@ said

Harvey=s Lil Goil gave a heart-stopping performance to win by

a head in the GIII Regret S. at Churchill Saturday. One of several

in the field of 13 who already had black-type experience, the

gray was prominent early and always up with the leaders,

keenly tracking longshot Eve of War (Declaration of War) from

the outside behind fractions of :23.26 and :47.48. Harvey=s Lil

Goil collared that one at the quarter pole and powered to the

front while a pesky Crystal Cliffs ducked to the inside and tested

her to the wire. The Bill Mott trainee never relented, holding on

by that determined head and paying a generous $24.20. It was

her first time on the lawn since a fourth-place finish in her debut

last November.

Breaking her maiden second time out Dec. 12 by six lengths

going a mile at Aqueduct, Harvey=s Lil Goil stayed in New York

for a subsequent 7 1/2-length score in the Busanda S. Feb. 2.

She reappeared May 1 in Oaklawn=s GIII Fantasy S., but never

factored throughout the race and finished well behind in 11th.

Pedigree Notes:

Harvey=s Lil Goil is from a family developed by her breeder, the

late Harvey A. Clarke. Her dam, the unraced Gloria S., is a half-

sister to the Clarke-bred champion I=ll Have Another (Flower

Alley), best known as the winner of the 2012 GI Kentucky Derby

and GI Preakness S. Clarke also bred the same family=s Golden

Award (Medaglia d=Oro), a dual graded stakes winner last year.

Clarke=s estate still owns Gloria S., who produced fillies by Cairo

Prince the last two breeding seasons. Harvey=s Lil Goil is one of

seven black-type winners from the first crop of American

Pharoah and the fifth graded winner by the Triple Crown victor.

Interestingly, four of his five graded winners have been on the

turf, with the lone dirt graded winner being last week=s G3

Unicorn S. winner Cafe Pharoah in Japan.

Victim of Love sprung a major upset in Belmont=s

GIII Vagrancy S., besting heavily favored Grade I winner Come

Dancing at odds of 27-1. Pressing fellow longshot Jakarta from

second through a :22.47 opening quarter, the bay drew even on

the backstretch and got her head in front turning for home as

the half went in :45.49. Come Dancing made an eye-catching

ARE KRONE AND PETERSON AN

UNBEATABLE TEAM?By Sue Finley, from the TDN LOOK

Passion is a funny thing.

What is it, you wonder, about one place or another, one

person or another, one career or another that is so compelling

that the person caught in its grip will do anything to have it?

Ferrin Peterson can=t exactly tell you why she will at least

temporarily put aside the eight years of study and sacrifice that

earned her a veterinary degree from UC Davis, one of the top

schools in the country, and a lucrativeBand safeBcareer as a

large-animal vet. Nor can she say why she=s willing to let her

acupuncture skills and certification lie dormant, for now.

All she knows is this: AI=m following my passion.@

That alone would be an interesting story: girl sets aside career

as a veterinarian to pursue her dream of being a jockey. But

Peterson took the interest in her choice to a new level when she

hired Julie Krone to be her agent, and announced that they

would get their start together at Krone=s old stomping grounds,

Monmouth Park, when the meet opens July 3.

Peterson is 5=4", 108 pounds, with a polite manner. At 28, she

brings a maturity and confidence to her career not found in

most seven-pound apprentices. In all likelihood, she is the

best-educated jockey in history, and her accomplishments go

beyond that. She is also a certified acupuncturist and was a

Division I pole vaulter at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo who reached

the state finals in high school and at junior college.

Krone met Peterson at Del Mar last summer, and she made

the snap decision to become involved in her story, and to

represent her in her own first try at being a jockey=s agent.

AShe had a reputation for being the girl who loves racehorses

so much that she=s going to ride races while she goes to vet

school,@ said Krone. AShe wants to be a jockey with passion of

nothing I=ve ever seen in my life. Literally. Like, unmeasurable

craziness. I=ve seen people try to talk her out of it, and they=re

like, `Oh, you=re a nice girl. You=ve got a great education.= And

the way she sees it, she=s going to be a jockey until she=s old,

and then she can be a veterinarian.@

AThis is literally what I wanted to do my entire life,@ said

Peterson, who graduated a year ago, and felt the call of riding

races pulling her back to the track full-time after getting on

horses for trainers in the morning during her final years at

school. AWhen I was a young kid, I was always talking about

becoming a jockey. I grew up on the back of a horse.@

Monmouth was Krone=s idea. She said that the strength of the

jockey colony and the small fields that have plagued Southern

California make it a tough place to get your start. Krone parlayed

her own success at Monmouth, where she won the riding title

from 1987-1989, into a career on the New York and later

Southern California circuits. And it=s not the only page they=ll

take out of the Krone playbook.

John Forbes and his then-assistant Pat McBurney played a key

part in getting Krone=s career off the ground when Forbes, the

perennial leading trainer at Monmouth at the time, used her as

his regular rider. McBurney has now taken over the reins at the

stable, and when it came time to entrust Peterson=s career to

someone, Krone sent her east to work with McBurney. Cont.

Peterson grew up riding and continues to work on her

dressage skills today | Sarah K. Andrew photo

From the TDN Look cont.

She spent this spring exercising eight or nine horses a day for

the trainer at Overbrook Farm, where McBurney stabled his

horses until Monmouth Park opened for training. McBurney said

that when Krone called, he listened.

AI received a call from Julie Krone and she asked me about an

apprentice rider coming out to Monmouth Park this summer,@

McBurney recalled. AIf Julie was excited about a rider, of course

we were going to listen to that. So she came out to Overbrook

and has just been galloping and breezing horses. We only have a

half-mile track here, so you can=t kick on too fast, but she=s

doing very good; gets along with the horses as she learns about

them, getting them to relax and everything. It=s hard to say what

kind of jockey she is at this point, but has a great way with

horses. She=s a very hard worker with a great attitude. Everyone

likes her in the barn, and everyone is interested to see her get

riding and see how she can do.@

Krone was inducted into racing=s Hall of Fame in 2000, and

retired for the second and final time in 2004 after winning 3,704

races in a career that spanned almost 20 years. She has taken a

particular interest in Peterson since meeting her at Del Mar last

year, moving her into the home she shares with her husband,

the writer Jay Hovdey, and their daughter in order to more

efficiently impart her knowledge. They have reviewed films and

form, done strength training, strengthened other muscles by

surfing and playing pickleball, and have formed a strong

friendship as well as working relationship.

Before they met, Peterson had been riding at Golden Gate

while she completed her clinical year in veterinary school, but

she always had her sights set on the Southern California circuit.

AI thought, `I=m going to go to where I know of the best jockeys

and trainers and try to learn from them. And if I don=t make it,

then at least I tried my hardest and had an awesome

experience.'@

She had had a handful of winners when, that summer at Del

Mar, she set out to meet Krone, who was doing a book signing

on Pacific Classic Day. Peterson saw the line that had formed,

and realized that it wouldn=t be a good opportunity to talk, but

happened to run into on her way out of the track that night. She

introduced herself, and Krone invited her to her house to talk

the next day. The following week, Krone suggested that she stay

in San Diego and train with her, and return to racing in the

spring.

For the past 15 years, Krone=s nearly full-time occupation has

been as a mother. While she has done some racing

commentating work here and there, her main focus has been

her daughter Lorelei, a gifted singer and actress who is a

community theater regular in the San Diego area who hopes to

pursue that interest in college. Lorelei tearfully confessed her

lack of interest in horses when she was young, and Krone has

supported her passion for theater, helping out by painting sets,

sewing costumes and even acting a bit here and there.

But in Peterson, she might have found not only her return to

the sport, but a new career after her daughter heads off to

school. While Peterson is 28, Krone has definitely taken her

under her wing as if she=s her second child.

As many people in the United States and around the world

question their personal views on diversity and racial inclusion,

we decided to look inwardly on our industry, and we found it

wanting. So we asked a tough question to several industry

members: How do we make racing at its highest level more

diverse?

ERIC GUSTAVSON, President of Spendthrift Farm

As we all know, diversity comes in many shapes and sizes. And

the question, >how do we make racing at its highest level more

diverse?= is locked and loaded for controversyB which makes it a

good question I guess.

Financial Diversity:

First of all, racing is known as Athe sport of kings.@ You don=t

see too much financial diversity among kings. A skeptic might

call it Athe sport of rich white guys.@ Cont. p16

Page 46: SANTIAGO LEADS MAGICAL RETURNS IN THE PRETTY POLLY ... · 7 8 Kalifornia Queen (Ger) Lope de Vega (Ire) Lecoeuvre Grewe 127 8 2 Brian Boru (Ger) Masterstroke de Vries Vovcenko 123

Eric Gustavson | Spendthrift

That would be pretty much spot on. Racing is, and has been,

run BY rich white guys, FOR rich white guys, for a long, long

time. Full disclosure: I happen to be a rich white guy, but I will

try to be objective nonetheless.

The only way to make the actual racing experience more

financially diverse at the highest level is to make racing more

affordable to a broader group of people. Equine microshare

companies like MyRacehorse do just that by offering affordable

horse ownership, allowing the owner to buy into top level

racehorses for often less than $100. This also has the

diversification bonus of drawing more women and minorities

into the game. Win-win-win. Full disclosure #2: This may come

off as self-serving as Spendthrift is invested in MyRacehorse, but

I think it=s true nonetheless.

Gender Diversity:

There are women participating at every level, and in every

aspect of our sport, and that=s great. There are relatively few

women owners at the highest level of racing. Maybe that=s

because they, as a gender, are too smart and pragmatic to be

willing to lose so much money (ha ha).

As for positions of leadership, maybe The Jockey Clubs and

Breeders= Cups, et. al. of the world should work to have women

in leadership as more of a representation of the population, or

closer to a 50-50 split. Maybe that means a certain number of

seats HAVE to be filled by women. This old boys= club stuff has

got to go. Full disclosure #3: I=m an old boy, albeit never part of

the club. I=m also a newly-elected member of the Breeders= Cup

Board, who may have lost out to a woman had the above been

implemented. I=m okay with that.

Racial Diversity:

Ah, the hot button issue of the day. Of our time really. If you

are like me, you are wondering how long can this be an issue of

our time. Aren=t we supposed to be better than this by now? I

mean seriouslyYwhat the hell? It=s exasperating. People go

through tough times all the timeBat every level of race, gender,

and wealth. But dang, those times are sure easier if you are a

man. And even easier if you are white. The system is rigged, and

racing is just as guilty as every other subset of our society. If we

can=t get our crap together enough to implement a centralized

racing authority, to develop uniform drug rules, to better weed

out drug cheaters, to increase sales transparency, to make more

advances in aftercare, to etc., etc., etcY.can we at least be part

of the 21st century solution to diversity?

Mandate a certain number of the above referenced seats be

allocated to minorities you say? Why not? Because it=s not

democratic you say? Bullsh-t, I say. That attitude has gotten us

where we are. Without the mandates it doesn=t happen. Look

around. Last time I checked, our industry wasn=t booming. The

excuses rich white men make to maintain the status quo don=t

work anymore. Full disclosure one last time: I used to do that.

I=m done with it.

series? Email the TDN=s Katie Ritz at [email protected].

Added Elegance S.

Sent straight to the front Saturday as per usual, Letruska toyed

with her competition, leading them merrily around the oval

while setting early fractions of :23.29 and :44.96 while in hand.

She opened up by six lengths in the stretch and drove to the

finish, letting Nonna Madeline within 2 1/2 lengths at the wire in

a powerhouse performance.

The Kentucky-bred Letruska isn=t the only accomplished

member of her family. Half-brother Trigger Warning (Candy Ride

{Arg}) was a MSW and GISP, while their dam is a full-sister to

GISW J P=s Gusto. Other family members close up include

American champion and GI Kentucky Oaks winner Proud Spell

(Proud Citizen) and Canadian champion Miss Mischief (Into

Mischief). Magic Appeal has foaled colts the last three years:

Nuzhat (Street Sense) in 2018, and colts by Hard Spun and

Arrogate, respectively, the last two breeding seasons. Click for

PARIS LIGHTS (f, 3, Curlin--Paris Bikini, by Bernardini), sent off

the 3-5 choice, settled in a two-wide second behind

Enjoyitwhilewecan (Quality Road) through splits of :24.56 and

:48.59. Taking over approaching the quarter pole, the WinStar

hombred was clear in upper stretch and rolled home a

3 1/4-length winner over the pacesetter. Subsequent to Paris

Lights, dam Paris Bikini foaled Cousteau, a colt by Into Mischief,

and a filly by Distorted Humor last season. She produced a colt

FLAP JACK (c, 3, Oxbow--Synkros {SP}, by Tapit), an impressive

winner of last September=s Arlington-Washington Futurity, got

back on track in this much-needed confidence booster.

Sixth after making a flashy middle-move in the GIII Gotham S.

Mar. 7, Flap Jack was well-beaten in both the Oaklawn S. Apr. 11

and GIII Matt Winn S. May 23. Turning back to a sprint here, the

1-5 favorite kept the early leaders within his scope in fourth,

made his move at the top of the stretch and powered clear to

score by four widening lengths over Fox On the Run (Curlin).

Synkros, from the family of GI Kentucky Oaks heroine Summerly

(Summer Squall), has also produced the 2-year-old filly In the

Wind (Big Blue Kitten), a yearling filly by Oxbow and an English

Channel colt of this year. Lifetime Record: SW, 7-2-1-0, $67,480.

WHISKEY DOUBLE (c, 2, Into Mischief--Lake Sebago {MSW,

the 7-5 choice in this unveiling and settled in a stalking position

as Medicine Tail (Kantharos) led through initial fractions of

:21.81 and :45.78. Three wide turning for home, the Steve

Asmussen trainee took aim in upper stretch and wore down the

7-2 shot late to score by 3/4 of a length. Windcracker (Super

Saver) was third. The bay's dam is MSW Lake Sebago (Munnings)

SWEET SOUPER SWEET (f, 2, First Samurai--Our Candy Striper,

first timers. It took a few strides for her to take command, but

when she did, she never looked back. Changing leads on cue

with her ears flicking back and forth, the chestnut galloped

home a three-length victress over More Savvy (Graydar).

Homebred Sweet Souper Sweet hails from the same family as

flashy, three-wide sweeping move rounding the far turn. She

challenged for the lead as they straightened for home and kept

on rolling down the lane to graduate by 2 3/4 good-looking

PURRFECTLY CLAIRE (f, 3, Munnings--Magical Belle, by

Unbridled's Song), a close second as the 2-1 favorite on debut

deep through an opening quarter in a sharp :21.28, took over

while in hand as they hit the quarter pole, enjoyed a four-length

advantage at the stretch call, and was kept to task en route to a

FLYING FINISH (c, 3, Pioneerof the Nile--Misty Rosette {GSW &

six-panel debut at Gulfstream May 3 that netted an awkward

start and a mild finish. More closely befitting his name Saturday,

he broke last of all, was no better than ninth of 11 after the first

quarter, and steadily inched up toward the inside. He rounded

the corner wide, then flew down the lane to reel in Papa Luke

(Strong Mandate) and surge to the front by 1 1/4 lengths on the

wire. He paid $7.70 for the win. Flying Finish is the sixth winner

out of his dam, who is a full-sister to GSW Storm Wolf and a
