Hello lovely Key Clubbers!
Welcome to another WONDERFUL Key Club year! My name is
Kaila Mattera and I am so pleased and honored that I have the
pleasure of serving all of you as your 2013-2014 Key Club president.
From now until April of next year, I hope I will get to know all of you
better and that we may all get to know one another as we bond
through service to our community. Ever since I was a freshman, my Key
Club experience has been an unbelievable journey and something
that I will never forget, and I hope that this year the board and I can
work hard so that you may have your own equally amazing Key Club
experience.
Like many other new Key Club presidents, I have set a few
goals to allow our club to improve and grow: $300 for Pediatric Trauma
Program, 2000+ service hours, at least 55% member attendance at
weekly meetings, two awards at District Convention 2014, and placing
in the top 3 clubs within the division. Our club is already strong, and I
know that together we can definitely reach these goals, surpass them,
and become stronger because of them. I have confidence that this
year, we can unite Santa Susana Key Club and become one big
“ohana.”

Round Up: April 20, 2013
Going to Round Up was one of the coolest experiences! I
volunteered for 9 ½ hours with some of my fellow club members, and
my sister. We shuttled up to Humming Bird Ranch around 8 in the
morning, and began setting up our club’s booth, where kids could
get temporary tattoos and make cards to send to the troops. My first
shift there flew by, and next I knew, I was acting as a bus greeter,
helping people on and off the busses that transported guests to and
from the ranch. I was given a script to read to the passengers,
informing them on basic facts about the ranch, and the property the
event was being held at. Although the lack of air conditioning and
the overdose of heat were going strong, the day was a job well
done. I finished my shifts, and spent the remainder of my time
listening to some nice, live country music while eating kettle corn.
The headliner put on an entertaining show, and the venue was
beautiful. I hope to volunteer at Round Up again next year!

Key Leader
Past Events
On April 26th through the 28th, I had the opportunity to attend Key Leader, and it is an experience I
hope I will never forget. For one weekend, high school kids, not just Key Club members, from various places
arrived in Santa Barbara’s Circle V Ranch Camp to make new friends, and develop leadership skills to last a
lifetime. Over the course of the three days, we played icebreakers, got to know each other, learned about
what it means to be a servant leader, and even learned more about ourselves. We camped out in cabins
and the food was fabulous; they even had a table filled with snacks that we could help ourselves to at any
time during the weekend. We were divided up into neighborhoods, which were little groups that we worked
in to do activities and team building exercises. We also had a high five buddy, that was someone we hadn’t
already met, and we did certain activities with them. My favorite part of the weekend however was the Key
Leader grams. Each person had a mailbox and we each got a pad of gram paper on which we could write
anonymous or signed messages of encouragement or
compliment and put them in each other’s mailboxes. It was an
amazing experience that I hope all of you will get the opportunity
to have sometime during your high school career.

Ongoing Projects
Pop Tabs
Throughout the year we collect pop tabs for
Ronald McDonald house. This is a place in close
proximity to a hospital where families can stay
when their child is in the hospital. They recycle the
pop tabs and use the money to help families pay
to stay at the house as well as pay the utilities and
other expenses needed to keep the house
running. So keep collecting! They can be from
canned beverages and even the tabs from
canned food!
S.O.S. (Save Old Spectacles)
We are continually collecting glasses for SOS.
Check with everyone you know to see if they
have any old specs that they do not use anymore.
Keep in mind, the end of the school year is ending
and if every member brings in at least 3 pairs of
glasses, our sponsoring Kiwanis of Santa Susana
will throw us a pizza party!
Feeding the Homeless
Our club helps at 2 different locations for feeding
the homeless and we could always use more
volunteers! We help with set up, dinner service,
dishes, and clean up after.
o Stillwaters Cafe at Shepard of the Valley
Church: Thursdays from 5-7pm
o The Samaritan Center: 1st Thursday of the
month

Narwhal Fun Fact!
Due to its long tusk the
narwhal is sometimes
referred to as the unicorn of
the sea.
Hello, Santa Susana Key Club! My name is Paolo Recto
and I will be serving as the Division 42 East Lieutenant
Governor for the 2013-2014 Key Club administrative
year. I had the honor to serve such an amazing club in
the past year and I am excited to serve seven clubs
this year. I would not be able to do what I do everyday
without the support of my home club (YOU). I am
really proud of all of you for accomplishing many
goals in the past year and I know that with the new
leadership of the 2013-2014 board, Santa Susana Key
Club will become even greater. I would love to have
you come to division events, so keep listening during
the meetings and keep checking your emails for more
information about division events. I hope you all enjoy
the last month of the school year! Keep getting those
service hours and keep smiling with those BEEautiful
