Santa Severina was founded by Enotri, an italic population that lived the zone before the first Greek colonization. The ancient name of the country was Siberene. With the Byzantine’s conquest (that gave to city the actual name), Santa Severina becomes a very important religious center. In fact was Episcopal metropolitan seat, depending directly from Bisanzio. Santa Severina gave born to Pope Zaccaria (pontiff from 741 to 752).

The Byzantine domination lasted until 1073-1074. Around 1075-1076 Roberto il Guiscardo guided the Normans to the city conquest. Also in Norman time, Santa severina had a considerable importance. The city was governed by Swabian , Anjou and Aragon populations.Today, thanks to his considerable heritage, Santa Severina is one of most interesting Calabrese tourist attractions.

The Santa Severina’s borough was one of most important in Italy during Middle Age.

For this reason we decided to get it back to Middle Age , organizing some days with medieval events and attractions.

The medieval days are composite by the following events:

-Medieval joust- trip on horse-tour of the castle- medieval fencing- Archery- medieval banquet

Our idea to improve the Santa Severina’s tourism

The medieval tournaments or joust are a kind of feast of arms of medieval origin; they born like war games with the intent of exercise the art of war. The main aim was to unseat the opponent on horse with the spear impact, but without hitting the helm.

The spears was made of ash, so they can crush during the impact avoiding the opponent’s armor break.

The joust model that we purpose is different by the classic way.

Medieval joust

Partecipants will wear a fake armor and on the horse they will have to pass the spear in the greater number of rings, hitting at the end one puppet, getting a score.

At the end of game who will the hightest score, will win.

During medieval days, guides will bring the tourists on the horses, on routes previously prepared.

Up to reach the entrance of the castle.

Trip on the horse

Afterwards, the tourists will come accompained to visit the castle.

At the end of the visit, they will taste the various local products.

The use of the sword, the first weapon invented with the aim to kill other humans, is very old. The earliest sources that mention in particular techniques result from the Roman period, but it was in the late Middle Ages that appear the first section written by masters-at-arms.

For the medieval fencing will be organized a tournament. Partecipants will wear the necessary safety and will fight between them

with fake swords. Wins the battle who hits the enemy more times. The winner of the tournament will receive an award.

Medieval Fancing

Archery is a sport of ancient origin. The bow is one of the first devices and certainly one of the most original inventions of humanity, that has developed in the various areas of the planet, in different and indipendent times.

In archery, partecipants will throw arrows hitting the center of the target.

According to distance from the center will determine the points. Who gets the highest score wins.

In the medieval evenings will be organized in the square "Campo" a medieval banquet.

Here you can taste the typical dishes of the place with those of the medieval history accompained with musics and shows.

At the end of the dinner will begin the ballads.
