The question SETrLKü. Wo are informed

that the Indian Department at Washing-

ton has settled tho question in regard to

the Navajo reservation and that it has been

determined that the reservation shall be atthe Bosqno Redondo, where there are now

re ore than six thousand Navajos located

and industriously engaged in planting

crops.

This decision is a wiíe ono. To have

arrived at any other conclusion, consider-

ing the circumstances, would have been

ruinous in its consequences and would have

again placed and Territory at tho mercy

of the savageB who havo been our despoil-er- s

for so many years.

Wo congratulate the people of New Me-

xico upon this their good fortane, not only

iu their deliverance from their savage foe

but also from the machinations of those who

would have jeopardized the welfare of the

Territory for tho graification of a sickly sen

timentality in favor of the savages,

On the morning of the 24th inst. accur-roi- l

one of those serious encounters which

ia f.rnier times were of frequent occurrence

in this city, but which in later years have

out Bfliloin happened between William

Uiggins and William Leader, resulting in

the death of the latter. The facts and cir-

cumstances as well ad we could ascertain

were as follows:

On the night of the 23rd inst. the par-

ties wore at a baile given at the "Arcade,"

a building fronting the plaza, and remained

until it broke up about 1 o'clock, and then

left, going in the sarao direction but not

together. When they had reached and

turned down the street running north and

south by the store of Anaslacio Sandoval,

a dispute arose, in which the patties carne

together, but were paited without any-

thing seiions having happened, und they

then separated. In a short timo however,

near the same spot, they again came to

gether when Leader was badly cut. No

one was present and saw the deed except a

Stivrita, who was being accompanied by

Uiggins, and who appears lo have been the

cause of Ihe affair.

ABRAHAM LINCOLN.

The Apache oí'Ai-iona- .

The people of New Mexico begin now lofiel that the giunt incubus üf ll,o Navajotribe of murderers and thieves lia been re-

moved and they eon now breathe easy, ttud witliout danger, look about and sechow they can improve their condition andthat of thu Territory at large, lint in oursister Territory of Arbcuna the Apache In-

dians teem determined that the white menhall not come there, cither lo hunt fur gold

or to open up farms. Wc hear from vori

did reliable sources lhat the miners nearFort Whipple aro becoming very muchalarmed on account of these Apache lio, tilities. Pome are leaving the country

but Borne who liavo discovered rich lodes

of (fold and silver are determined not lo bedriven away from llicoi.

We feel authorized to say to the peopleof Arizona, that troops are getting readyU8 lust as possible to march into that Tor.

and commence hostilities upon their sav-

age neighbors. Within six weeks from

this time, wo havo reason to believe, thatan earnest and persistent effort will be

made to punish the A parlies, and either to

bring them under subjngslion, orto exter-

minate them. It is true, the country inwhich they have llicir hiding plans is

inaccessible from its ragged endsterilo character; and true that the Apa-

ches cannot be starved, out bo to speak, ify ou drifo tliein from one point to another;beeanse the whole of the region in whichthey live, and in which they take refugewhen menaced, is filled with the fiare.d'iim'raiiii, a plant which when baked be-

comes their favorite food. It is known An

mrictl. It therefore follows that in a waragainst these Apaches our troops will haveto work to great disadvantage, as they willbe obliged to transport every article of sub-

sistence either upon or in hav-

ersacks; while tho Indians can travel with-ou- t

other incumbrance (han their arms; aswhorcver night finds them there is theirource of supply their commissariat grow-

ing upon tlio sido of every hill. Tho In-

dians of that country havo another verygreat advantage They know every wa-

tering place; every trail which makes whatis called "tho shortest cut" from one springor one stream to another: and, besides,

they havo a system of telegraphing bysmokes from one monnlain peak to anoth-er by which intelligenoo of danger, or of

movements, whether of parties of their ownpeople or of their cneroiss is conveyed in a

moment all over their country. To ourtroops nearly tho whole Torritory of themain travelled routes is ierra inctynita.Since January 1st of this year, upwards of

sixty of their braves have gono to happierhunting grounds; and despite tho almostinnumerable obstacles with which ourtroops will have to contend, we believe thatthe indomitable energy of tho CaliforniaToluiitcerswhoarctotako tho field, willovcrcomo all, and give theso Indians thepunishment they have so long and so richlydeserved.

Their country is without doubt vastlymore rich in the precious metals than anyother that is known. So, while our gallanttroopscxploro it in quest of savages, theywill discover many rich leads, and rich

pinners, and thus open up a preciso know, ledge of where gold and silver may beought with profit. This will bo not only

the foundation of wealth for tho hardy andresoluto discoverers themselves, but for

thousands of the citizens of our country atlargo who arc only wailing to have theseIshmacliles of oor deserts brushed away,to come with their c ipital and industry todevelop what ii now to all of 119 1 scaledup treasure.

So, wc my to our friends of Arizona-- Heof good cheer. Wo have got rid ofour

Iudiaiis and look forward not only withhope but wilh confidence that VOIl WÍtl

soon get rid of yours. We havo a sort ofprescience that when you nil sit down toeat your next Christmas dinner you will notI..' no itnxis-usv- this point as now, Wait

or rather stay and hope! for succor in

at hand.

When your M'Cleaves and Tidballs, and

Whitloeks and (ireens, and soldiers of

their stripe, get on the war path, your Apa-

che must be swift of foot, sleepless of

nights, and never tiring or ho will be

quite sure to join the spirit 'of the greatManges Von will see. Wo are no pro-

phet, but you will sec.

There is a great and increasing interestfelt hero in the development of Aiir.ona,--Th- at

Territory is the daughter of New

Mexico, and whatever tends to increase the

prosperily of the one cn but conduce

to the interest and advancement of tho oili-

er. Almost before we can fix our atten-

tion to the condition of affairs there a

change will take placo in those affairs as

if by magic. And that country which has

been spoken lightly of will resound with

the hum of a busy population. The oner-

irv and nruutlciil klill will pomp born

will exp'oro its veins of inexhaustible

riches. Towns will spring up as if called

into being by a wizard's wand; mills will

bo built, the church and school h -- use

will be erected; and the great hailut winch

has beilherto existed between our brethr-

en of the Atlantic Stales and if the

Pacific, will be filled with a thriving, reso

lute, intelligent people; and bars of stie'.

will grapple Arizona from the east and

Horn the west, and will run accessplains und reticulate val-i- ,

.leys; then the hiatus is gone .111,1 the lireat

,Uepublie is knitted togemer into one com -

pletc whole and become homogeneous in

interests as in blood

That will bo the commencement ef our j,national millenium: Our thousand years of

happiness and prosperity; the manhood

the young giant; the completed mióles -

cence of Ilypirion. While wo say this re

verently, we say it hopefully, and though

our thoughts have wandered from the Apa-

ches of Arijona, to the prospective great-

ness of our beloved Country, tho chain has

been logically connected and complete; and

we have followed it link by link to thatncvitablo result. We know tiiat this lan-

guage does not result from any but practi-

cal thoughts. There is neither rhapsodyin themselves nor iu their expression.

So that, from tho commencement of hos-

tilities against the Apaches to tho time

when our sister Territory has

even ourselves, and become a wealthy and

powerful State, there is a continuity and a

sequence, which ia cheering to contem-

plate.

Seits Demolished: About tho 15th inst.

a party of confederate spies were discover-

ed to be in tho vicinity of the Presidia dol

Norte, in Texas. They were ten in num-

ber under commandJofSkillman, whoiswellknown in this Torritory from a former re-

sidence here and his connection with the

Sibley brigade during tho Texan invasion.

They had oome from San Antonio and were

looking about to seo what was to be seen.

C'apt. French, of tho California Volun-

teers, was, with a small detachment of men,

oBBervice in that vicinity. When he

learned of tho whereabouts of bkillman

nnd his party, ho determined to make a

night attack upon them. This he did in

most succcosful manner killing two of the

party, wounded three and taking four pri-

soners; only 0110 escaping. One of the

killed was Skillman. Hu had been of greaticrvico to tho confederates in their opera-

tions to this country, and his death will be to

them a great loss. In his camp was cap-

tured a pretty largo lettor mail.

Copt. French and his men are entitled to

high praise for tho successful manner in

which they conducted their part of the af-

luir.

fcí" We havo been shown a copy of the

Arizona Miner of tho Oth inst. It C0I1.

tains a great variety of local news intc-r-

osling to all who are watching theprogressof affairs in that now Territory.

The mineral products are spoken of in

the most lettering terms; the only draw-bac- k

to the development of untold wealth

appearing to bo a scarcity of provisions

and the prcsouct of hostile Indians. In-

dependent conpamios of miners are on a

campaign against tho Piual Apaches aud

it is expected that these together with tho

troops will bo able to give that band a se-- i

vcrc chastisement.

Gexkiiai.: I am happy to inform youthat despite the Indian disturbances, and

the lack of provisions, tho interest in ournew mining region is on the increase. I

think 1 may safely say that thero is a bet-

prospecting progresses new und unmistak-able indications of the great wealth of the

district aro developed. Some of the quartzloads discovered within a few days, give

great promise: thoBe of silver aro especial-

ly attractive. The placers arc by no meansexhausted. I was at Walker's gulch

rockers paying better than at any time

since tho occupation ot the gulch. At theLower HaBsayumpa, the washings are excellent, and thero is yet water for a thou

sand miners. But the lodes are the mainattraction of the country and as I havesaid, moro confidence in felt in them than

at any previous period. Moreover thoconveniences for working them, wood,

water &c are generally much better than

in the southern portion of tho Territory. The old miners thereabouts aro not to heueirlocted however. I hear of the beirin

for the reports which were published in

tho New York World and Harper's Weekly

in reference to Gcn'l. Carleton being re-

lieved from the command of this Depart-

ment. We are assured that neither the

war Department nor the President contem-

plates any such a step.

The system of attacks upon Gen'I. Car-

leton which has been kept up through the

New York World is tho work of malice, on

the part of interested porsons, upon whom

disloyalty has been fixed beyond contro-

versy and they know that as long as the

General is in command of tho Departmentthey cannot come back hero and practicetheir iniquities. Heneo when they, with

tho connivance of the owners of tho World

who appear to have been bought up for tho

purpose, publish the removal of Gen. Car-

leton they only publish that which they

wish to bo, and not that which really is.

ItíyOn contemporary of the Rio Abajo

Press is ono of tho most successful marcs

nest Onders wo have ever had the plea-

sure of being acquainted with. That seems

to be his forte. Holmes and Licb were

quito as ferocious on cliques as is our con-

temporary but ho beats them, all hollow, in

finding mares nests.

Sumo men are peculiarly fitted by na

ture for this business aud they aro never

content unless they bo constantly making

known their disoovcries to the world. Our

contemporary seems to be oao of these, for

there scarcely passes a week in which lie

does not exhibit to tho admiring gazo of

the people of New Mexico a marcs nest of

t,,e n,oat gitrntic proportions. But tho

CES wl,k'h om' contemporary lays in his

nest are not 01 a goou quality, no amount,

of incubation to which ho Bubjocts them

has succeeded in producing sufficient vita- -

lity to pip tho shell and lot tho world sec

yet been produced.
