Cruz ViewsThe Purpose of a Website: a Q&A with Chris MillerChris Miller, president and rocket sci-entist at web design and development agency Launch Brigade, recently men-tioned that a website is not a marketing strategy. I sat down with him to learn more about the real purpose of a website, common misunderstandings, and how templates are like bento boxes. Here are the highlights of our conversation.

Cat Johnson: What’s the role of a website in a larger marketing and brand strategy?Chris Miller: I think of the website as a per-forming member of your team, a catalyst for sales. This is the difference between a website being an sunk cost versus being a tool that offers a return on investment and increases your revenue stream.

We’re frequently approached by clients with no concept of a budget, or a budget with no basis or merit. There’s a general perception that websites are inexpensive because there’s lots of free website building software avail-able and any bright high school student can build a business website.

Part of that is rooted in the early days of the internet when services, such as email accounts, were offered for free. There’s a general consensus that everything on the internet is free or low-cost, or there’s a magic wand you can wave and get a quality piece of work with little effort.

What are some common misunderstandings, among business owners, about the purpose of a website?In the early days, people made a website that was essentially a virtual business card. The primary purpose was to lend your organiza-tion clout that you were modern and digital because you existed online. It provided an easy way to get your potential customers your contact information.

Now, for many businesses, a website has become the primary marketing tool to drive business. The word tool makes an important distinction that this isn’t just pretty pic-tures and a few paragraphs of words, it is a mechanism to convert visitors into paying customers.

How should new business owners start thinking about their website?Start with the question why. Why do you need a website? What do you expect the website to do for you? What does success look like? For small businesses, like small restaurants, that aren’t able to afford a rea-sonable marketing budget, it may make more sense to leverage Yelp and Facebook where your buyers already exist and it’s free.

What about someone who knows they definitely need a website?I would start by building a sitemap, which is a hierarchical list of pieces of content that you anticipate putting on the site. All websites have a homepage and that’s the first impression a potential customer gets if they go directly to your website. It’s the rest of the pages that give depth to your business.

Most businesses have products or services pages, and other pages that talk about the company, its team, its customers, and so on. These pages require a cohesive content strategy and can be the most challenging to get right.

Try to limit the number of menu items to five or seven. Beyond that, it becomes visu-ally overwhelming. It’s important that the navigation quickly points users to the con-tent of interest, so consolidate; be concise; less is more.

What should people have when they contact a website developer?From the sitemap, start writing the content for each of the pages. Content is the biggest bottleneck we find with our clients. The reason is because it’s very difficult to find the words to speak about your business. What we often find is that customers focus too much energy on the “building” of a website, instead of starting with the content. But the first building block of a website is the con-tent—it’s a content first approach.

When people actually have to actually put their thoughts and words out into the world, they start dragging their feet .I think it speaks to the vulnerability aspect. Once you push through that, the strategy starts to come out and you can refine your

content. We normally translate the content we receive from the customer, but they have to give us a rough draft. A lot of times it’s a brain dump of information and that’s okay because a copywriter can refine that into marketing terms and concepts that are inter-esting to potential customers.

What tips can you offer about finding the right website platform?There are a number of content management systems available. Business owners should absolutely use a content management system that allows them to edit their own content without being beholden to their web devel-oper.

If a site is information only, without sig-nificant functionality requirements, then Squarespace is a viable option. However, Squarespace templates can be somewhat limiting, in terms of how you display your content. Templates are like a bento box. You tend to write content to fill the boxes, whereas the approach we prefer to take is to design a website and experience around what you have to say.

For higher end design and functionality, we often use WordPress, which continues to hold the dominant position in website plat-forms. WordPress itself is free, and there is a healthy ecosystem of premium paid plugins that allow us to do a lot of cool stuff includ-ing marketing automation.
