Library History

Nestled in the heart of the Silicon Valley the Santa Clara City Library has grown and developed along with its city. The library was formed in 1903, 51 years after the city was charted. The library was given a permanent location in 1914 and its own building in 1955. This building is still a part of the library system. It houses the Mission Library and Family Reading Center. The Central Library was opened in 1967 and ,at 37,000 square feet, more than quadrupled the space of the library. As the city has grown so has the Central Library. At 80,000 square feet the library is now home to an extensive collection complete with wireless internet, computer training facility, local history section, children’s garden, fireplaces, a bookstore and a café.

External Environment

The Santa Clara City library is located in Santa Clara, California; a city of about 118,263 people. This is a community diverse in ethnicity, education and socioeconomic status. Santa Clara has no majority ethnicity and the library reflects this in its diverse holdings including material in several languages. Santa Clara is a city of both young families and aging seniors. The library runs extensive family programs while also supporting seniors with outreach programs that bring the library to the patrons. Being in the Silicon Valley, Santa Clara has a significant population of highly educated people, 21% with master degrees or higher. In the last 10 years there has been significant rise in these numbers and the trend seems likely to continue.

Internal Environment

The Santa Clara City Library is funded by the City of Santa Clara with support from the Library Foundation & Friends. The library has a generous budget of $6.7 million. This funding support 42 full-time staff who work in five departments: Administration, youth and extension services, adult services, collection services, and support services. The library is overseen by the City Librarian, Julie Passalacqua along with the Board of trustees. The library boasts a user base of over 110,000 patrons each month. The library has a vast collection of electronic resources and works to stay current with technology advancements. The welcoming and knowledgeable staff strives to meet all their customer’s needs.

TechnologyStatement: We will stay at the forefront as technology is improved and resources are developed, to provide the best possible experience and results for our library users.

Action Plan

The Santa Clara City Library is intended for the public’s use and is accessible to all. It especially welcomes those in the community that need a helping hand to fulfill their personal and career goals.

The action plan we have created will enhance the library’s services and make it more compatible to those that need it the most to get far in this world. To do this the library will continue to support its community members by providing a variety of programs and extending its hours to make these opportunities and their services available.
