GOD’S CALL

T he person who has been “saved,” who has “heard the good news of salvation,” still lives in an unsaved world, a world sadly oblivious to the presence

of God. Today’s readings out-line how the disciple is present in the world. The outline begins with Isai-ah: “Share your bread . . . shel-ter the oppressed . . . clothe the naked” (Isaiah 58:7). Those who hear the word of salvation are not insensitive to the urgent needs of others. Then Paul re-minds his flock that he brought Christ to them not in eloquence or wisdom, but by being with them in the “weakness and fear” of their daily lives (1 Corinthians 2:3). Finally, Jesus tells his disci-ples to go out into the gloom and darkness of the streets of the world and let God’s light shine through their good deeds. We disciples don’t save the world. To the extent, however, that we have heard the word of God and been awakened to God’s presence, we may spread that word and bring that presence to others. -Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

T he prophet Isaiah inspires us with these words: “Light shall rise for you in the darkness, and the gloom shall become for you like midday.” All of us cele-

brating the liturgy today praise God for these words of encouragement. Surely each of us knows the gloomy side of life, but today’s readings pro-pose a brilliant antidote to misery: the light of service. Isaiah focuses on physical suffering, telling us to pro-vide food, clothing, housing, and equal opportunity to those with lim-ited resources. Moving beyond material needs, Saint Paul demon-strates how to proceed humbly when attending to people’s spiritual needs. Saint Matthew’s Gospel stirs us to bold action: whatever gifts we have, we must put them at the service of our communities. EL LLAMADO DE DIOS

L a persona que ha sido “salvada” y que ha “oído la buena noticia de salvación” sigue viviendo en un mundo

que no ha sido salvado, un mundo tristemente inconsciente de la presencia de Dios. Las lecturas de hoy bosquejan có-mo el discípulo se hace presen-te al mundo. Ese perfil se inicia con Isaías: “Comparte tu pan con el ham-briento. . . abre tu casa al pobre sin techo. . . viste al desnudo” (Isaías 58:7). Los que escuchan la palabra de salvación no son insensibles a las urgentes necesi-dades de los demás. Pablo le recuerda a su rebaño que él le trajo a Cristo no con elocuencia o sabiduría, sino que permaneció con ellos “débil y temblando de miedo” en medio de su trabajo diario (1 Corintios 2:3). Finalmente, Jesús dice a sus discípulos que va-yan a la desesperanza y oscuridad de las calles del mundo y dejen que la luz de Dios brille a través de sus obras buenas.

CONTINUA CON LA ORACIÓN

T odos estamos de acuerdo que cuidar a los de-más es importante. Absolutamente nadie quie-re ver que un niño pierda peso a causa de la

hambruna. Y, aun así, tenemos recelo en ofrecer tiem-po, talentos o dinero a obras de caridad. ¿Qué tal si los destinatarios usan incorrectamente el dinero? ¿Qué tal si las donaciones promueven el desamparo y a largo plazo la dependencia? ¿Qué tal si mi pro-pia situación no es muy estable? ¿Cómo puedo ayu-dar a los demás cuando mi vida diaria es tan difícil y el futuro tan incierto? Estas son preguntas válidas. Dios quiere que usemos nuestro intelecto cuando dis-cernimos mejor la manera hacer obras de caridad. Pero la duda no debe guiarnos a la falta de acción. Si no sabemos cómo proceder, debemos dedicar bas-tante tiempo a la oración. En oración, consideramos

siguientes elementos en condiciones nuevas o casi nuevas: Calcetines, Guantes, Chaquetas, Ropa de Abrigo, Sacos de Dormir, Zapatos, Dinero, Artículos de Tocador (jabón, cepillo de dientes, pasta de dientes, desodorante, etc.) Traiga todos los artículos antes del 16 de febrero o déjalos en Mercy House (Old Oxnard Armory) en 351 S. K Street en Oxnard.
