Street trees are key to pedestrian comfort and urban livability. In addition to offering shade, they reduce ambient temperatures in hot weather, absorb rainwater and tailpipe emissions, provide ultraviolet protection, and limit the impact of storm winds.

Many of our cities are experiencing heat waves, which, if not directly attributable to climate change, are boosted in frequency and intensity by our gluttonous spewing of greenhouse-gas emissions into the atmosphere. Measurements of ambient temperatures taken on exposed versus tree-canopied streets around the United States document temperature differentials rang-ing from 10-15 degrees Fahrenheit between the two. The difference can be potent when temperatures hit triple digits. Proper tree cover on urban streets can virtually offset the phenomenon called the “urban heat island” effect. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the cooling effect of a single healthy tree “is equivalent to 10 room-size air conditioners operating 20 hours a day.” (In Santa Barbara, our abundant and beautiful palm trees, unfortunately, do not provide the environmental benefits that broad canopy trees do.)

A properly shaded neighborhood is said to require 15-35 percent less air conditioning than a treeless one. Climate change begets air con-ditioning, which begets carbon pollution, which begets more climate change. Denser urban canopies could help short-circuit this vicious circle.

Even more impressive, however, is the astoundingly large role that trees perform as a carbon sink. In what economists call an “ecosystem service,” trees are unsurpassed in their capacity to gobble up CO2. And urban trees, located as they are in close proximity to roadways, are 10 times more effective than more distant vegetation at hijacking car exhaust before it hits the stratosphere.

When an inch of rain falls on a tree, the first 30 percent of the precipi-tation is typically absorbed directly by the leaves and never even touches the ground. Once the leaves are saturated, up to 30 percent more of the rain seeps into the soil, made more porous by the tree’s root structure. This root structure then pulls the water back up into the tree, from which it is eventually transpired back into the air. The process allows a mature tree to absorb about half an inch of water from every rainfall.

A comprehensive study in Portland, Oregon, called “Trees in the City” concluded that each mature tree was responsible for almost $20,000 in increased real estate value. In the aggregate, this adds $15.3 million to annual property-tax revenues for the city, while the city pays $1.28 mil-lion each year for tree planting and maintenance, resulting in a payoff of almost 12 to one.

Santa Barbara Beautiful and our area parks departments do a com-mendable job planting trees on our local streets. An equal commitment to keep them alive, however, is not always present. Since street trees may be the best investment a city can make, we all need to pay attention to them and help keep them healthy so that they can continue to provide their full array of benefits.

Summertime in Santa Barbara is my favorite time of year. I’m an unabashed sunshine lover, so the weeks between Memorial Day and Labor Day Memorial Day and Labor Day Memorial Day and Labor Day— and

especially from Solstice to Fiesta—make up the bright, beachy season that I love the most. Yes, we have our misty mornings, but when the June gloom lifts and the sun shines through, the agapanthus blooms brighter and every-thing sparkles in the sun. It’s on these long, sunshiny days that start with an early sunrise and extend long past dinnertime that you’ll find me at my happiest.

It was one of those magically bright sum-mer afternoons last week when I went to visit an open house in the heart of downtown Santa Barbara. I’ve driven past El Andalúz at 531 Chapala Street a zillion times and even walked past it a few. It has the very recogniz-able style of the renowned team of architect Jeff Shelton and builder Dan Upton. The play-ful shapes and colorful mixtures of patterns and materials are Moroccan- and Andalu-sian-inspired. While I can certainly see that influence, Shelton’s creations also look like a twist on our classic white-walled, red-tile-roofed Santa Barbara beauties. It’s as if some of those staider homes decided to play dress-up in fun colors and sparkly accessories and get a little silly.

I parked across the street and gazed up at El Andalúz for a few moments. It has two commercial spaces on the first floor, occupy-ing the striped horseshoe-shaped archways that grace the façade and anchor the building. Those archways, plus the variety of distinctive windows and the shape of the building itself, with asymmetrical outlines, patios, and pat-terns, invite you to admire it from afar and yet also beckon you closer to explore it more carefully.

As I entered the building, I found that I couldn’t walk through its main entry quickly. The wrought-iron railings ahead and the intricate ceiling above beg for longer inspec-tion. After doing so, I walked upstairs to a courtyard of myriad tiles and colors. The plants vied with the tiled fountains, detailed metalwork, and colorful wooden balcony for my attention. There was so much to ogle everywhere I turned, with flags fluttering in the breeze adding to the festive air.

When I walked into unit B, I had to keep reminding myself that this home is techni-

cally a condo. I entered into a huge living room with a dining area beyond. Adding to the open feel are French doors on both sides of the room, letting in the sunshine and open-ing to a private patio on one side and a bright courtyard on the other.

Exploring the rest of the house, the kitchen impresses with its top-of-the-line appliances, tiled stove hood, and big pantry. The master suite has not one but two huge closets and a striking fireplace, plus an impressive mas-ter bath with beautiful cabinetry and a deep marble tub. The second bedroom is actually a self-contained suite with its own sitting room, bathroom, and separate entrance, lending itself to a variety of flexible living situations.

Throughout the home, I kept noticing dis-tinctive touches such as wall nooks in the liv-ing room and intricate metalwork details on the balcony. I had a feeling that if I toured this house over and over again, I would discover something new and delightful every time.

Built in 2009, each of the seven residences at El Andalúz has its own two-car garage with a private elevator that opens directly inside the individual residence. So even though you’ve got the views and feel of being far above the city, you’ve got the convenience of single-story living. The tiled floors and soar-ing ceilings give the home a spacious feel, while the decorative touches and colorful, playful spaces lend an atmosphere of bright, sunny, fun. Just like Santa Barbara in the sum-mertime, and all the time.

Profiles in Designby Carolina Starin

VAI Van Atta Associates Inc.Architect: Susan Van Atta, 235 Palm Avenue, va-la.com

Specialties: Commercial, public, and residential landscape architecture and planning

Notable Projects: The Santa Barbara Bowl, Sheffield Park, Carpinteria Marsh, UCSB’s Campus Point, and The Biltmore redesign

Upcoming Projects: The Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History

Susan Van Atta has completed some of the largest public-space landscaping projects in Santa Barbara, but she’s still on a mission.

“A lot of us who are landscape architects express amused frustration that, for the most part, people don’t have a clear understanding about what a land-

scape architect is,” she said while explaining the rigorous academic studies involved in professional licensure. “They think we are gardeners a lot of the time.”

Van Atta came slowly to her profession. She first graduated from UCSB in the 1970s with an environmental studies degree and helped write the California Coastal Act before moving on to do environmental impact analysis for the County of Santa Barbara.

She changed careers as soon as she became aware of landscape architecture. “I thought, ‘What a weird juxtaposition of terms. What does that mean?’” said Van Atta of her initial response to the idea of incorporating architec-tural design principals into the environmental planning process.

Van Atta then enrolled in three additional years of architectural studies and techni-cal classes — such as structures and urban design—at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo to earn her architectural landscape degree.

She has since taken on many regional projects that focus on revitalizing severely destroyed environmental systems. Her firm’s list of large public projects includes

restoring an area of the Carpinteria Marsh wetlands that was filled in for condo development, designing the landscape at the Santa Barbara Bowl, and redesigning The Biltmore lawn to reduce water use and add color and texture.

She also redesigned the big concrete reservoir that was Sheffield Park by carefully assessing the topography and natural adjacent lots. “It’s starting to feel like it wasn’t designed,” she says of the organic feel of the layout and native plants. “Although a lot of design went into it, including some historic value.”

The Sheffield Park project succeeded in mimicking nature so accurately that a bee expert from UC Berkeley stopped by her office one day to thank her for — unintentionally — creating a bee habitat. It has since been listed it as one of six study sites throughout California to look at how introducing bee-friendly plants can enhance the populations.

Van Atta also returned to her alma mater to create the plan for restor-ing Lagoon Park. “It was beautiful but really needed some help,” she said of UCSB’s Campus Point gravel parking lot, which her firm redesigned into a habitat project with wetlands and pools to treat storm water, and bike trails and boardwalks for student adventures. “I was so excited I was able to do that.” The project won an American Society of Landscape Honor Award and has become known throughout the world.

One of her firm’s upcoming projects will be designing the seven-acre cam-pus of the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History to provide universal access and a permanent butterfly exhibit. “It’s such a great setting,” said Van Atta of the project, which will also incorporate a tree house, boardwalk, more native plants, and a garden that will attract birds. “It’s an opportunity to really take what they do and bring it more into the outdoors.” n
