Exciting times are here again! It’s summer time once again, with fun-filled days. However, these days can also be a fruitful time for learning and creativity. So let’s ensure that students do a lot of reading and some enjoyable homework too.

This summer break, try and make a difference:-

Appreciate Nature- Go for long walks in a park or garden with your family and friends. Adopt/Grow a plant.

Good manners are the key to success- Respect your parents, grandparents and all elders. Use three magical words (Sorry, Please and Thank you) often. ‘A little more courtesy goes a long way.’

Stay Fit, Stay Healthy- Ride a bicycle. Play your favourite game/ sport regularly. Develop in yourself the spirit of sportsmanship and a sense of healthy competition.

Save Nature- Contribute to save our precious environment. Minimize the wastage of resources like water, fuel and electricity. Must do: - Eat healthy food and drink lots of water and juices.

Read newspaper every day. Watch channels like Discovery, Animal Planet and National Geographic.

Revise the concepts taught at school.

Some Do’S and Don’tS during Summer vacation:

Do’s

• Drink lots of water – at least 8-10 glasses per day. Carry a water bottle everywhere you go. • Lime juice and fresh fruit juice act as refreshments and quickly replenish body’s lost fluids. Help your

mom in the kitchen. Learn to prepare Lemonade, Fruit Salad, Sandwich etc. Relish them with your family members. Also click the photographs as these will be sweet memories for you.

• Wear light coloured fabrics and full sleeved cotton clothes. This will keep your body cool and protect you from UV rays.

• Don’t forget your hat and sunglasses. • Eat small, light and frequent meals. Eat lots of vegetables and seasonal fruits. • Stay indoors as much as you can. • Study for an hour every day. • Explore various games. • Enjoy your holiday trips. Visit places of your interest and click photographs.

Don’ts:

• Don’t be out in the open between 11 am and 4 pm. • Don’t have junk food and fried food items. • Don’t watch too much TV. • Don’t waste time in being lazy. • Don’t dirty your place of living

Dear Students,

This summer holiday homework is based on the topic of Natural Disaster which is very much a part

of your social sciences curriculum.

Disaster management can be defined as the organization and management of resources and

responsibilities for dealing with all humanitarian aspects of emergencies, in particular

preparedness, response and recovery in order to lessen the impact of disasters.

India has been traditionally vulnerable to natural disasters on account of its unique geo-climatic

conditions. Floods, droughts, cyclones, earthquakes and landslides have been recurrent

phenomena. Over the past decade, between 1990-2000 an average of about 4344 people lost their

lives and about 30 million people were affected by disasters every year.

The loss in terms of private, community and public assets has been astronomical.

Significance of doing a project on disaster management in social sciences

As students of social sciences and as conscious citizens, doing a project on disaster management

is going to give you a first-hand experience and opportunity to get yourself familiarise not only with

the meaning, factors, etc. of disasters but also to learn the essentials of disaster preparedness and

ways to collect relevant information pertaining to disasters and its effective dissemination.

Guidelines to complete your project report

• Topic for the project: Natural Disaster

Task I: What are natural disasters?

i. Research using internet, newspaper, magazines, etc. about some of the more common

natural disasters that out Earth faces.

ii. Some of the topics that you can research on are:

iii. Pick one natural disaster (such as earth quake, flood, etc.) to focus on in your project.
