Sankofa: To return to the past, learn from it, and move forward
There is no other event like this in the world, which allows you to participate or observe in a re-enactment of our Ancestors journey,
from the village, through enslavement, and to freedom. This historical outdoor event is held on sacred black owned land in Dallas, TX., purchased in 1876 by freed Africans, James and
Katherine Morney, and maintained today by their 80 year- old great grand daughter, Mrs. Murdine Berry. Bring your entire
family and celebrate Juneteenth, by journeying back into the past, and remembering the Ancestors
…experience the freedom of living in the Sankofa Village
…experience being taken from the village by force
…experience the horror of the slave ship
…experience the humiliation of being sold to the highest bidder on the auction block
…experience the harsh realities of plantation life
…experience the constant fight to be free
…experience the danger of escaping to freedom on the underground railroad
Why Remember the Past?
Over 100 million peaceful Africans were kidnapped from the continent of Africa and sold into chattel slavery for over 400 years. We, those of us who are Africans born in America, are here because our enslaved Ancestors survived the 4 to 6 month journey of the middle passage and they survived enslavement. We owe it to their memory to honor them, their struggles, and their story. June 19, (Juneteenth) marks the true emancipation of Africans enslaved in America, and we must remember our Ancestors by returning to the past and learning from it, so we can move forward to the future.

The Sankofa Experience…
…a series of re-enactments throughout the day until dark which allows you to
participate or observe.
This historical-cultural event is held outdoors on farm landWe suggest long pants, long/short sleeves,
tennis shoes/hiking boots. Cameras are allowed
No alcohol.
Appropriate for people of all ages, races, religions & backgrounds
Food and cultural arts vendors on site
