2nd Sunday of Lent

Lord Jesus Christ, You have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief.

Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: “If you knew the gift of God!” You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God. Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy, you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen.

    2º Domingo de Cuaresma

"Peter and his companions had been overcome by sleep, but becoming fully awake, they saw his glory." Today's Gospel records the event we call the Transfiguration of the Lord. In this miraculous moment, Jesus' divine nature was revealed clearly to Peter, James and John. Often, we think only in terms of what happened to Jesus: "his face changed" and "his clothing became dazzling white" and he began a supernatural conversation with two ancient prophets. But that was only half of the story. The other part is what happened to the men. They were able to witness this revelation of Jesus only because they were "fully awake." Had they stayed sleeping, they would have missed out. They would not have had this astonishing insight into the glory of their friend and Master. It's an obvious point but one that may need more attention than we'd care to admit. Of course we have to be "awake" in order to absorb the fullness of our faith. If we are not tuned in, not attentive, not exerting any effort, then we are certainly going to miss out. But the fact is that we don't always realize we are falling asleep. Just as Peter, James, and John were "overcome" with sleep, we too can slip into this state without necessarily realizing it's happening. Spiritually speaking, we can become numb or lazy and slowly fade away from the fervor of authentic faith. This is why the church, in her wisdom, gives us the season of Lent. During these weeks, we strive to purify ourselves by attacking the sins and selfishness that make us spiritual sleepwalkers. This is the time to refocus, to clear away the cobwebs and to become "fully awake." Ultimately, we pray that these efforts will allow us to truly see "his glory" come Eastertide. LPI, Inc.

Often people attend Mass at All Souls for several years, but never register. Registering here is a declaration of your desire to be part of a Catholic community and to

make a commitment to the life of All Souls Church. Being a registered parishioner makes the process much easier when it is time for infant baptism, school or religious education registration, weddings, when asked to be a baptismal or confirmation sponsor, and even funerals. A registered parishioner receives all parish mailings, too. Church law advises that territories or boundaries no longer limit parish registration. All Souls accepts anyone who wants to share in the life of the parish regardless of where they live. In order to register, you need to complete a registration card. These may be found in the narthex of the church or chapel, the parish office during the week or online at our parish website: www.allsoulssanford.org. Why not sign up today?

As we come together each week to worship, the following gentle reminders are intended to protect the sacred environment of our Liturgies and to respect those around us. Cell Phones: Please silence all cell phones, tablets and all other electronic devices before entering church. Silence in Church: We are in the house of God and as such should show respect. Some people come to prepare for the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass by praying while others stay after Mass to give thanksgiving for receiving our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in the Sacrament of Holy Communion. Please hold all your interactions with others for the Narthex or outside the entrance to the Church or Chapel. Let us be respectful to others. Arriving on Time: Please arrive for Mass on time. Where unforeseen circumstances arise and Mass is in progress, please be discreet as possible when taking your seat or wait for an usher to signal you to a seat. Leaving before the Final Blessing: Mass is not over until we receive the final blessing and the Priest leaves the altar. Just as you would not leave the table at home before the meal has ended, we ask you to stay for the final blessing. Clothing: As we enter the House of our Lord for worship in the Holy Mass, we ask that you dress modestly and appropriately, showing a Christian respect for others. Clean Environment: Leaving a clean church for the next Mass provides a spiritual welcome to all who enter. On your way out of the church, please look around your seat and return Missalettes and Hymnals to their proper place. Please do not use the hymnal holder as a waste receptacle, and if using the restrooms leave them neat and clean.

This year, our Church is celebrating the Year of Mercy. We are opening wide the doors to the saving mercy of Christ. We are asked to consider the question: what does it mean to be merciful? While we sometimes limit “mercy” to “forgiveness,” Christ’s example shows us so much more. It is about finding ways to better serve our brothers and sisters in need. Gifts to Our Catholic Appeal help our diocesan family care for those who are suffering, defend human life and dignity, engage youth through education and campus ministry, and evangelize more people than we could ever reach alone. Now it is time for all of us to share a portion of our treasure so these ministries can continue. If you received your 2016 Our Catholic Appeal packet in the mail and made your pledge, thank you. If you have not yet made your pledge, please consider doing so today. By supporting the ministries of our diocese, every parish, including our own, is better equipped to carry out the work of Christ. Our parish goal is $171,571. Once we achieve our goal, the majority of the additional funds will be returned to our parish to support our own special needs. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response.
