SSFC: What changes have occurred at the club

from last season?

Broome: I think the biggest difference over last season

has been the accountability that we require as opposed

to last season. We are transitioning from a recreation

team to a full club with the goal of getting our players to

the next level.

Some have adjusted well because they understand why

Broome: I believe we already have a product on the

field that the local community can get behind. I really

feel that our style of play, ambition and drive as a club

are key to our sustained success.

We take seriously our club name and realize that our

behavior, quality of play and success are a reflection

on the city of Sandy Springs. This is a big responsibility

and that is one of the reasons why our new direction

demands a serious attitude on & off the pitch.we need better discipline and

accountability but others have

had difficulty in adjusting

because they may not be the

caliber of player that is needed

under our new goals. For us to

be successful, we can't have

the mindset of a recreational

player. We need a professional

attitude!

SSFC: What are your

thoughts on the ADASL

(league the team plays in)

Broome: It's adequate for our

needs right now largely

because we are in such

transition.

Our ambitions are to advance

further which would require a professional level to attract the

players and staff necessary for the goals we have set for

ourselves. We can't get to this higher league until we secure

the players necessary to get there. We have a good start

with that, but we are not there quite yet.

SSFC: Now with half the season done, how do

you think the team is doing so far?

Broome: Overall, very good, but we need to improve

if we hope to get something out of the season.

As I said before, the adjustment in attitude and

finding the right players has taken time and the

results reflect a certain inconsistency that we need to

resolve in the 2nd half of the season.

But our new attitude is attracting new players that do

understand. Players like Rory Pratt, Gilbert Ezra

are 2 examples who have joined a core group of key

players at the club that are going to be important as

this transitions continues.

SSFC: What does this club mean to the local

community in Sandy Springs?

But the ADASL is good level

for us now and being a

member of Georgia Soccer

Association means these

players are more easily

seen by more quality

coaches than other

recreation leagues. I believe

we'll always try to keep a

team in this league even as

we hope to move to another

more serious league. This

means a lot of hard work

ahead for us.

The SSFC Faithful Are Singing....

"When Irish Eyes Are Smiling"

RoryPratt

Rory Pratt is our 25 year oldstriker who hails from Dublin,Ireland and is a new addition to JBroome's squad for the 201415season. In the short time he'sbeen at Sandy Springs FC, Rory'smade a huge impression on thesquad and it's ability to goforward in attack.

Rory sat down with SSFCMagazine to talk about theexperience in coming to theUnited States and theadjustments he has had to maketo the culture and the team andwhat he hopes to accomplishwhile at Sandy Springs FC.

SSFC: Tell us a little about your history withthe game. When did you first get interestedin the sport?

Rory: Football's been apart of my life for aslong as I can remember. At the age of 4 or 5,my parents took me down to a local soccerclub named St. Joseph's Boys for a Saturdaymorning program and it really all started there.I played for them till I was 18, but I continued toplay on after that in other competitions.

SSFC: Has football been a big part ortradition for your family?

Rory: Yeah and it's funny you mention"tradition". My grandfather actually played for

Ireland's national team where he captained theside. He also played eleven years for Evertonamong other teams in England, so yeah, football has been a big tradition in my family. Ieven remember going to Lansdowne Road(now called Aviva Stadium) to watch Ireland inaction when I was a kid.

SSFC: Do you have any siblings?

Rory: Yeah, I'm one of 5 boys and we allsupport various clubs now.

SSFC: So is there a bit of infamily rivalrywhen it comes to football support.

Rory: Oh yeah there really is. As a supporter,

Page 13: Sandy Springs FC Magazine 2015 January

13

I follow Liverpool, my mother's a huge Evertonfan, my dad is for Chelsea, 3 of my brothersare Arsenal fans and I have another brotherwho is also a Liverpool fan as well so there canbe some tense days during the Premiershipseason in the family.

SSFC: Yeah, we can imagine derby dayscan be tough in the Pratt household.

So who were some of your heroes growingup?

Rory: Well as far as teams, it was Liverpool atthe club level and Ireland of course at thenational level. As for players, I suppose it hasalways been players from these teams thatplayed my position. For Ireland, I looked up toRoy Keane but for Liverpool, I go back to IanRush early on then Robbie Fowler and evenMichael Owen who I was fortunate enough tomeet once. More recently it has been StevenGerrard and Fernando Torres.

SSFC: When did you realize that youwanted a career in the game?

Rory: That desire came to me early in lifeinfluenced in part to my attendance at Irish

national team games and my many trips toEngland to watch Liverpool. As I got older, Ihad friends progressing in the game and goingover to England to play for clubs like AstonVilla and Nottingham Forest and that tooinfluenced me to want more out of the game.

SSFC: So that leads me to another questionwhich is what led to the move to the UnitedStates to play soccer?

Rory: Initially it was only college soccer inNorth Dakota but afterward I couldn't find muchof a club scene here to take advantage. Thisbecame a concern because I really couldn'tfind adequate clubs to investigate even after Icame to Atlanta. It was in stark contrast tofinding teams in Ireland and England.

SSFC: This has been a lot of trouble forserious players who are not apart of what'scalled "elite youth clubs" or school teams. The lack of opportunities is one of thereasons we designed our club as we have.Is that the challenge you are explaining?

Rory: Exactly. When I came to Atlanta fromNorth Dakota, I thought it would be the samewhere there would be little of the game

Page 14: Sandy Springs FC Magazine 2015 January

14

outside of school and college. But as I foundout there were actually a lot of teams but I wasthen presented with the problem of finding theright quality of team that I could play for. Therewere many that were not of the standard abovea recreational level which does not interest me.Combined with my lack of knowledge about theleague structure here, it presented a largechallenge for me.

SSFC: With that, how did you come tochoose Sandy Springs as a club to playfor?

Rory: Well, living in the Sandy Springs area Iheard about the club from a friend who told meto investigate a little closer. I followed hisadvice and came out to a training to observe

SSFC: Now that you are in the squad, howhave you been getting along with the otherplayers?

Rory: It was a bit interesting to start becausethis was the first time I was in a situation whereeveryone else speaks a different languagethan me. Of course they do also speak Englishas well but I thought it would be more of achallenge to adjust. But they are all a greatbunch of lads and made me feel welcome fromthe very beginning. I feel I am fitting in just fineand we are gradually building great chemistryin the team all around.

SSFC: And what of Coach Broome, whathas he told you about your roll with theteam?

and was impressed with what I saw. Then Ispoke to the mangement and coach J andmade my decision for a trail right then. Shortlyafter I was offered a permanent place in thesquad and that's where I have settled for now.

SSFC: Now that you are in the squad, whatkind of football opportunities do you thinkthis will make for you?

Rory: For me it's great because origianlly, aftercollege I did not see any other opportunites tocontinue a career in the game, but now withSandy Springs FC and the goals of the club toplay at the next level, I see a club I can helpachieve greater goals for which we aspire. Thiscould provide a sort of gateway onward.

Rory: It's been illustrated to me that there's aninteresting mix of personalities in the team andI'm actually one of the older ones there. Coachalso knows that I was captain of my collegeteam for 2 years in North Dakota as well as forthe last time I played for in Ireland. I believe hewants me to work with the leadership here atSandy Springs to add support especially whenworking with our team captain, Salvator Ortiz. So basically, I look to fit in and work with theleaders of the team wherever it will help thesquad.

SSFC: Now that you've got a few gamesunder your belt, what's been yourimpression of your time in the team playingin the league?

Page 15: Sandy Springs FC Magazine 2015 January

15

Rory: Well, the first couple of gameswere a challenge to get to full fitness. But now that I've had a few games andworking at training very hard, I'mfeeling good in the squad and the goodresults so far have been a plus too.

The league is of a good standard and adecent mix of teams at this level. Ithink we will do well this 2nd half of theseason and I want to be apart of theteams' success.

SSFC: Rory, we want to thank youfor taking time out to talk to ustoday and we look foward to seeinghow it goes for you in the in thebalance of the season here.

Rory: Very nice and thank you forhaving me.

Q&A With

Tito Palma

Stephania (SSFC): Tito, where are you fromoriginally?

Tito: I was born and raised in BogotáColombia.

Stephania: When did you first learn aboutthe game of football?

Tito: I was 5 years old when I first started toplay the game. Football was a big part of myfamily and even as a small child, I looked up tomy relatives who played at many differentlevels in the game. We use to gather to watchleague matches on the weekend and it reallygot started from there for me.

Stephania: Is your family supportive of yourchoice to pursue a football career?

Tito: Yes, very much so. They are supportiveof everything we do related to the game.Soccer is a passion for my family and it'snormal for us to pursue the game as a playeror otherwise. In fact, football is a passionthroughout the entire country.

Stephania: Who were your football heroesgrowing up? Was there a particular playeror team that you especially followed?

Tito: Well my biggest football hero is Messi(Barcelona). It's funny but one of the reasons Ilike him is that he is one of the shortest playersin the game but also one of the best. In turn,I'm one of the shortest players in my leaguebut Messi has shown me that this is no barrierto how far I can go as a player. It shows to methat it's up to you as an individual to you as an

Sandy Springs FC striker, Tito Palma, sat down with SSFC TVcorrespondent Stephania Montanes to answer fan questions about hishistory in the game and his time with Sandy Springs.

Page 18: Sandy Springs FC Magazine 2015 January

18

individual to work hard and you canaccomplish whatever you put your mind too.Messi has taught me that by showing that heworks hard and became the world's best bythat personal will and work ethic. Very inspiringto me.

Stephania: When did you really know youwanted a career in the game?

Tito: Really since I started playing as a youngkid. From the very beginning. I just fell in lovewith the whole energy in the game and thepassion you experience whether as asupporter or player. There's nothing else like it.

Stephania: How did you make your way tothe United States?

Tito: Through my mom. She came toinvestigate to see if the country would be agood fit for the family and decided that it would.

Page 19: Sandy Springs FC Magazine 2015 January

19

for us. She spent some time here, made theplans and soon after we were on our way tothe United States when I was still relativelyyoung.

Stephania: From a football perspective, what is the biggest difference betweenColombian football and football in theUnited States?

Tito: The style of play. It seems that there ismore emphasis on the size of the player, howphysically tough he can be and the speed ofplay than much else. It's really like a "kick andchase" style of play that I continue to see herethat doesn't take advantage of individual skills.

In Colombia, there is much more emphasis ontactics, passing and creativity. Colombianswant to make the game look and feel morebeautiful. I'd say that is the biggest difference.

Stephania: How did you come to play atSandy Springs FC and what do you hope toaccomplish at this club?

Tito: It kind of just happened. I typically cameout to the field to play with friends and it just sohappened that it was the same field where theteam trained at the time. One of my friendswas in the team and he and coach J asked if Iwanted to trial with them and I did just for theheck of it.

I felt good after the trail and coach J liked thepotential I could bring to the team so he tookme on and now I'm in my 2nd year with theclub.

Stephania: What kind of footballopportunities does this open to you?

Tito: I like the upside of the opportunities Ihave in relation to Sandy Springs in this area.It can be tough because of the way that socceris structured here, but Sandy Springs looks towork with players to get them exposure andbetter chances of advancement than what I'veseen with many other teams in the city.

Stephania: What has coach Broome toldyou about your role in the team thisseason.

Tito: Well there are a lot of new faces in theteam but my role really hasn't changed fromlast season. I'm a forward, I play there and Ithink the one thing he wants me to be is openminded about how he can use me from gameto game.

I'm happy to help the team in anyway I can butI love attacking and that seems to be the mainrole that coach J has for me so it's a great fitfor me.

Stephania: Tito, I want to thank you fortaking time out to talk to SSFC Magazineand we look forward to seeing you the 2ndhalf of the season.

Tito: Thank you for the opportunity to answerquestions.

From very humble beginnings,Khrishna Cobb and ImagesFrozen In Time Photographyhave become a vital cog in theexistence of Sandy Springs FC.Without her imagery, the webpages and pages of this magazinewould surely not live withbrilliance.

Khrishna sat down with us to talkabout her history withphotography and her interest insoccer and consequently herwork with Sandy Springs FC.

Khrishna, I'd like to thankyou for sitting down with usto share your backgroundwith photography and theSandy Springs FC.

It is my pleasure to talk toyou on these subjects.

First off, I guess I'd like youto talk a little about howyou got started withphotography in the firstplace.

Sure! My work withphotography has roots withmy work years ago as amodel in Detroit Michigan. As a teenager, I started workas a model which involvedme in a variety of modelingjobs. But very early on, Ifound the modeling agenciesa bit limiting. That's when Igot the idea to start my ownmodeling agency.

Your own agency? How oldwere you when you startedthat agency?

I was only 19 at the time.

The name of my companywas International TrendSetters.

That was very young tostart your own company ina field like that isn't it?

Yes, but I had a lot of helpfrom my mother and I felt theneed to have a company tohelp aspiring models, likemyself, get into the door.

You mentioned "a need".Can you elaborate?

Yes. One thing I noticed wasthat as a model starting out, itwas very difficult to getstarted and part of theproblem was the agencies ofthe time. They were notproviding what was neededfor the model to really getstarted effectively. So I took itupon myself to researchthe field I was working in tosee if I could make adifference by starting my owncompany. That way, I couldtailor the way a model couldstart and help them to getmore jobs.

I guess you can say I wanted usas models to have access to thefreedom and resources to getstarted in the business thatsimply was not available at thetime.

So how did that go for you?

It went very well! My goal wasnot just to have a successfulcompany but to open upavenues that simply were notaround at the time. Even thename of my company was toillustrate that we were to havemodels of many differentbackgrounds and nationalities. The field of modeling up to thatpoint was not very diverse, butour company helped to createopportunities for more people todo more types of modeling jobs.

Since we didn't have a lot ofcapital to get things going, webartered a lot withphotographers, fashiondesigners and vendors in theindustry. It really wasrevolutionary and it really is avital factor as I moved on frommodeling after coming toAtlanta. In fact my earlybusiness played a major part inmy interest in photography.

How did the transition tophotography come about?

The transition to photographywas probably slower than youwould realize.

Page 22: Sandy Springs FC Magazine 2015 January

22

It was not a direct path at all. After coming to Atlanta in1995, I began work with aInsurance company andeventually became managerof the call center of thatcompany. But I still had acreative yearning to expressmyself, and it was thisyearning that translated towork on the other side of thecamera as a photographer.

How did you get started onthat "other side" ofphotography?

Really a bit by chance. Oneday, my friends and I wentgarage sale hunting. It was atone of these garage sales thatI bought my first "realcamera". A Nikon SLR filmcamera (N4004) for $25. Thecamera was in beautifulcondition, believe it or not.

So just like that, youdecided on photography asa new direction?

No not quite like that. Thiswas not a "point and click"type of camera and I knew Ineeded to learn the craftbefore I could get anythingout of it. I took courses at theAtlanta College of Art andShowcase Camera School toreally get into technicalaspects of the camera and thecraft in general.

Getting "under the hood" ofthe camera (if you will) waswhat opened my eyes to thisnew world and my passionand love of photographystarted from there. This earlyexperience turned me intoa female version of"Peanut's" Linus with hisblanket. I had to have mycamera with me everywhereI went, but it was still just acraft for me.

OK, so let's jump ahead toyour work with sports andin particular, amateursoccer. How did this evolve?

Well, I have to give myhusband (Andre Bomar)credit for opening the door tothis soccer world to me. He'snow assistant manager atSandy Springs FC and heinfected me with a passion forfootball. But he alsosuggestion I try my hand atsports photography whichwas a seed planted that hasgrown over the years.

I was told you werereluctant at first. Can youelaborate on your hesitationto try sports photography?

Yeah. When I first started toget into photography, my lovewas of nature photography soI concentrated on that. WhenAndre got involved withpromotions with the AtlantaSilverbacks professionalsoccer team for a fan group, that is when he started to talkto me about photographingsports.

At first, I just thought that Icouldn't branch out into thattype of photography as ittakes a certain eye andapproach to really do thatwell, but he kept prodding meto try so I did. I'm glad I did!

Out of of school, Khrishna became asuccessful fashion model in Michigan, USA.Now she spends her time on the other side ofthe camera.

Page 23: Sandy Springs FC Magazine 2015 January

23

So the initial influenceturned into a new if notunexpected passion withsoccer?

Yeah, Andre turned out to beright about my ability tocapture the moment in sportsand I then realized that Ishould never limit myselfwith my photography.

This was a major influencefor me going from a hobbyistto a professional in the field. Ino longer allowed myself tothink that "I can't"accomplish things.

So as I remember, thetransition to the ADASLcoverage with Andre waslinked to this newphilosophy?

Yes. When the Silverbacksfolded, he looked for anotheravenue to involve himselfwith the sport and that is whatdirected both of us to theADASL. And like the modelagency from my early years,we looked to help theseyoung players to have agreater opportunity in theirsport by helping to raiseawareness of the league, theteams and the competitionsthrough what we do with the

website and photography andthis magazine. We areproviding "images frozen intime" to help capture imagesof the sport and competitionthat would otherwise be lostforever.

That is the point isn't it?

Well, it is a joy to be involvedin my passion that others canbenefit from. I think we bothrealize that unless you capturethe moment with wordsand/or photography, the recallof these event is lost. For anathlete, this would be anegative aspect to a league withno real coverage for them.

Page 24: Sandy Springs FC Magazine 2015 January

24

But the question might be how toprovide this coverage in a way that isaffordable. I think we have created thisstructure in a similar way that I did withmy modeling agency years ago.

That is one thing that I learned whenworking with the Silverbacks. Manypeople spoke about how to promotethe sport better, but few wouldactually do anything about it.

Yes and if people have a talent or craftthat could be donated to the cause, thenit's up to that person to use that skill toaccomplish that task.

The officials of the ADASL have thatsame type of drive when they organizedand started this soccer league. Nowpersons like my husband can help takewhat they started so wonderfully andraise the level of awareness through thewebsite reports, photography and pagesof this magazine.

Anyone could help to add their owninput to help us go even further. Like Isaid before, that was the drive in mymodeling agency and it was a factor inmy work with Sandy Springs. It's funnythat I have indirectly gotten involvedwith modeling again, but this time I amliterally on the other side of the camerahelping the models by my work throughthe lens. It's just one more aspect of thework that I am now fortunate enough tobe doing and it is a joy to work with thephotography and with the SSFC.

Well Khrishna, I want to thank youfor sitting down to discuss your workwith photography and Sandy SpringsFC.

It was my pleasure and I look to beworking with Sandy Springs FC into thefuture as the awareness grows in theleague and it's competitions.

KSA 17s Sandy Springs FC

October 5th, 20141 2

The long awaited first match of the ADASL season is now history and Sandy Springs FC werevictorious over a very young and very spirited KSA17s side by the score of 21. Second half goals fromTito Palma and Bryan Martinez overcame the KSA17s penalty score as the Eagles of Sandy Springsgot the valuable victory. Sandy Springs FC, who won division 3 last season, are in effect starting overwith the reformatting of the ADASL league structure but the goals for success for the club have notchanged.

KSA17s, though new to the league, are not new to football or league competition. A very experiencedcoaching staff directed a disciplined and clinical young team that pushed Sandy Springs FC till the finalwhistle. But clutch play and the experience of the Sandy Springs squad, under the coaching of JBroome, was just enough to take the full points on offer today.

Man Of The Match award (voted on by the players on the team) goesto forward, Tito Palma. Tirelessly a runner up front, Tito scored thefirst goal and made the 2nd goal possible by Bryan Martinez. Always athreat on or off the ball, Palma earns the first Man of the Match awardof the season.

A great start to the season for Sandy Springs and it continued nextweek as the Eagles made the long journey to Coweta County to faceReal Team for the October 12, 1pm match!

Wings Sandy Springs FC

October 26th, 20140 4

A tricky looking trip to Agnes Scott College was on the schedule for Sandy Springs FC as they facedold nemesis Wings. Sandy Springs converted their advantage of possession in the match into a score 3quarters of the way through the 1st half. After a denial of what was felt a certain penalty when SantyMokgoatsana was brought down in the box, the same player worked his way through a mass of Wingsdefenders to expertly roll in the first score of the match and the 10 lead.

The second half brought a bit more of the same and Sandy Springs was getting the best of the bulk ofpossession but Wings were still dangerous on the counter attack. As the half wore on, Sandy Springswould take full control and bring goals in the latter parts of the 2nd half from Rory Pratt, Tito Palmaand Aboubacar Fofana to round out the scoring at 40 going away.

Sandy Springs FC’s Man of the Match was voted on by the SSFCplayers and awarded to Santy Mokgoatsana. Mokgoatsana’s tirelessrunning with and without the ball was a major thorn in the side forWings all day.

Mokgoatsana also broke open the scoring which gave the Eagles moreconfidence in attack and contributed to the mental edge in the match.

Nuesoft III Sandy Springs FC

November 9th, 20141 3

The usual fluency was lacking but the result was good enough as Sandy Springs FC continue theirperfect run this season with a hard fought 31 victory away to Nuesoft III. In the victory, Sandy Springsgave up the first goal against them in open play, sadly during the first few minutes of the game when theEagles were playing poorly by their standards.

Sandy Springs managed to put together some poised possession, Christian Ortiz managed to find spaceon the left side of the penalty area and skillfully slotted in for debut boy, Deandre Harrison, whoconverted the easy tap in for the equalizer.

In the 2nd half, Santy Mokgoatsana converted on the volley in the 6 yard box to put Sandy Springsahead 21. Not long afterward, old returning veteran, Gustavo Duran scored a good goal after anothergood move across the goal mouth to cement the game at 31.

This week's Man Of The Match honors was this week awarded solelyby the coaching staff for the work ethic put in on the day fromGustavo Duran.

Scoring one goal and assisting with another, Gustavo demonstrated ahigh level of commitment on the day and deservedly earned the matchaward today.

Atlanta Jrs II Sandy Springs FC

November 16th, 20143 0

Sandy Springs FC suffered their first defeat today at the hands of a resurgent Atlanta Jrs II squad by thescore of 30 at the Jrs II home at Maynard Jackson (AKA, The Asylum). Jrs goals from HugoCervantes, Brandom Valadez, and Kevin Otokore were expertly dispatched as the Jrs II went awaywith a good victory for them today.

The match itself was high energy, end to end and played at a frenetic pace. A real treat for any neutralwatching the match. It would be the first real setback for the team in the season. The urgency andtraining of the squad was suffering and it manifested itself on game day.

Injuries were another contributing factor but the team as a whole will look at the match as a learningexperience to carry with them in the balance of the season.

The Sandy Springs FC player of the match picked by the coach thisweek goes to central defender Cris Moreno who played with heart, determination and passion urging his teammates on even with the oddsagainst a late comeback late in the match.

Sting Black Sandy Springs FC

December7th, 20142 1

The Eagles of Sandy Springs FC lost their 2nd league game running with a belowpar performanceagainst Sting Black by the score of 21 at Georgia Soccer Park in East Point Georgia. Missing a numberof first team regulars including 3 first team defenders, striker DeAndre Harrison was drafted intoplaying in the center of defense. The nature of amateur football makes this a typical occurrence.

Sting Black started the brighter of the 2 sides and deservedly went ahead early that seemed to also wakeup the Eagles a little in their own attack. Sandy Springs would equalize from Francisco Alvarado but asending off of Jose Vega and what some would call dubious officiating, Sandy Springs FC fell behindlate in the match on a Sting Black counterattack with too many SSFC players caught upfield.

The loss was the 2nd in a row for the Eagles and disappointing for the overall poor performance, butthere was knowledge that we could improve and also get some key players back from injury after thecoming long league's winter break.

Though not a good showing for Sandy Spings FC today, there werestand out performers and in particular for Sandy Springs, the Man ofthe Match award goes to the goal scorer Francisco Alvarado.

Alvarado was a hard worker in the game earning the Eagles goal byhustle and on field leadership. Alavarado has been a reliable player forSandy Springs on and off the field this season and the team will nodoubt look to him as one of the players that will need to continue tostep up as the club looks to turn around a couple of poor results.
