Page 7: Sandboat sponsor`s booklet

I am an Architecture and Urban Planning s tudent f rom Lodz Univers i ty of Technology currently working in cc-studiooffice in Amsterdam. For me architecture is about answering user`s needs and combin ing them wi th beauty of architectural form and its adequacy. Moreover I am interested in ECO-design and restoration of historic buildings as well as designing them in an existing architectural context.

I am a student at the second cycle studies working in Stockholm in VIDA office right now. I am a survival instructor, a snowboard instructor, a sailor instructor and an architect. This combination allows me to lead a group, quickly and precisely solve technical problems, think about beauty and function at the same time. As an architect I try not only to be the designer but also a creator.

what is SANDBOATworkshop about?

Page 9: Sandboat sponsor`s booklet

Nothing is temporary. All we can do is to deal with it or take a senseless fight against nature. Eventually nature always wins. The only way to see it is a long term observation how human creations are changing in time, how nature absorbs them. Dunes are these magical formations that allow us to see their movements year by year. Imagine sitting on a sinking boat, the water is slowly moving around you. Suddenly the water freezes, time seems to stop. Imagine sitting on dunes, slowly floating like water, letting sand pour through your fingers. These movements might seem to be frozen because of the overgrowth. The fragility of moving dunes can disappear

CONTEXT

Page 10: Sandboat sponsor`s booklet

Let’s take a sinking boat and have a slow cruise with unknown ending… We want to make a construction that can either disappear or stay for long, it depends on nature and human activity. We want to make an ephemeral “boat” floating on Nida`s sand dunes. It will slowly drown. The more people will exploit it, the faster it will disappear in the sand. We want to create a place to sit, look, and think. The whole idea is subordinated to Nida`s specific nature- sand dunes movements, ephemerality of its beauty - the problem of overgrowing. SandBoat is also about time dilation and it`s connection with human existence. Nida`a atmosphere is a perfect place for meditation and thinking about passing by.

materials

Page 13: Sandboat sponsor`s booklet

Materials should be 100% natural, BIO-BASED, in order not to harm the environment. We decided to choose willow branches: WICKER. It is cheap, easily accessible in whole Europe. This material allows us to achieve different levels of transparency, it is biodegradable and can be either really stiff as soft, everything depends on its weave.
