Welcome to our June issue.2 days of sundrenched sporting and partying elegance are set to drawthe crowds to our stunning Sandbanks peninsula on Friday 6th andSaturday 7th of July as the fifth Asahi British Beach PoloChampionship swings into action. Teams from England, Ireland,Wales and Scotland will compete for the Championship title whilespectators will enjoy intimate seats with fabulous views of the playersand their horses. e first match will kick off at 3pm on Friday, andwill continue into the night with the first floodlit polo game in theevening. It’s not just the exciting, fast paced game which has beenreferred to as ‘Ice Hockey on horseback’ that will promise to keepvisitors entertained, but a wide range of other sporting and leisureactivities including a fashion show, an exhibition of OakleyProfessional beach volleyball and the Audi Q7 charity race which israising money for Help for Heroes.Sumptuous refreshments will beavailable throughout the weekend in the stunning Sunseeker loungeand Food Village, while the family friendly event will make sure toprovide a range of children’s activities within the Retail Village –which also offers a range of luxury, beach and polo related goods and services.

Following the storming success last summer of As You Like It,Lighthouse, Poole’s Centre for the Arts is delighted to announce thatit is once again hosting a unique outdoor theatre performance by theworld famous Shakespeare’s Globe in the walled garden of UptonCountry Park in Poole from 17th – 18th June. Using a small troupeof actors, the company will be presenting a stripped down version ofShakespeare’s classic play Hamlet in this beautiful open air setting, reviving the old Globe principle of outdoor playing.

We lived in Bournemouth in the 1930s and the chain ferry was theway we departed from the conurbation to explore the wonders ofDorset’s dramatic coastline, our Jurassic playground. We had no carand so to reach the delectable sands of Shell Bay, we had to catch abus to Sandbanks and then travel as foot passengers on the ferryacross the narrow entrance to Poole Harbour reputed to be one of thelargest natural harbours in the world. e ferry was and still is run ona chain even though the old ferry has been superseded by newimproved models and it is probably the only sensible way of crossingthis narrow opening in view of the strong coastal currents; even thismethod of transport although tied to the strongest of cables is carriedsomewhat sideways by the tides. We marvelled at the thickness of themetal chain and wanted to take a closer look, but Father warned us tostand very clear of it, because the cable had considerable movementand was capable of maiming one for life.” – we bring you a wonderfularticle from a local resident who talks about the fascinating history ofSandbanks and Shell Bay.

Enjoy your issue and see you again in July.

Having been described by e Guardian as “efunniest thing on television", Lighthouse, Poole’sCentre for the Arts welcomes a new full lengthtouring show from the acclaimed star of BBC2’sStewart Lee’s Comedy Vehicle, as he presentshis Carpet Remnant World show on June 15th.

What can a sexless middle aged married man, whose life nowconsists mainly of watching Scooby Doo cartoons with a four yearold boy, possibly find to write comedy about?

Formerly stand-up’s youthful iconoclast, Stewart Lee now gawpsblankly at News 24 as Britain burns down around him, and blinksweirdly at the vast wayside retail outlets during endless journeys toand from increasingly indistinct provincial theatres. Once he livedon the pleasure planet. Now he is trapped in Carpet RemnantWorld. And so are you.

is comedian has just played a sold-out twelve week Londonseason to over 30,00 people at Leicester Square eatre, duringwhich he was awarded two 2011 Comedy Awards for his BAFTAnominated BBC2 series: Stewart Lee’s Comedy Vehicle.

Stewart Lee began stand-up at the age of 20 in 1988, winningthe Hackney Empire new act of the year award in 1990. In the 90'she contributed to various BBC Radio comedy shows, including Fistof Fun and On e Hour, with Steve Coogan and Chris Morris, performed as a stand-up almost nightly on the London circuit, and

co-created four series for BBC2 with Richard Herring.Stewart directed the Mighty Boosh's breakthrough Edinburgh

show, Arctic Boosh (1999), Simon Munnery's Golden Rose OfMontreux nominated BBC2 show, Attention Scum, (2000), and arevival of Eric Bogosian's Talk Radio (Underbelly 2007). In 2001he was invited to help write the libretto of, and direct, the composerRichard omas' developing work, Jerry Springer e Opera, atBattersea Arts Centre. e show won four Olivier awards after itsNational eatre run, though it was prevented from enjoying anycommercial future by the pressure group, Christian Voice.

Stewart's subsequent three stand-up shows, 2004's Stand-UpComedian, 2005’s 90's Comedian and 2007's 41st Best Stand-UpEver, gradually built his live audience and contributed to BBC2'sdecision to commission his 2009 series, Stewart Lee's ComedyVehicle . is was followed by a new stand-up show, If Your PreferA Milder Comedian Please Ask For One (2009), and completed anew series of Comedy Vehicle in 2011.

Stewart is also the author of a novel, e Perfect Fool (4th Estate2000), the stand-up treatise How I Escaped My Certain Fate (Faberand Faber 2010), and the theatre pieces Pea Green Boat(Traverse/BAC 2002), What Would Judas Do? (Bush/BAC 2007),Johnson and Boswell, Late But Live (Traverse 2007), and Interiors(Manchester International Festival 2007, with Johnny Vegas).

FM, and has written on music for e Sunday Times, e Wire,Bucketful Of Brains, and Mojo.THE INTERVIEW

Your new touring stand up show is called Carpet Remnant World. Why?Well, the idea of the show is that as a 43 year old comedian and dadof two all I ever do is drive around motorways doing gigs, going pastall those massive warehouse type shops, or look after children, so Ihaven’t had time to write anything apart from jokes about thingsI’ve seen out of the window of the car. Of course, this is just adramatic device and in the end it all ties together beautifully andturns out to have been a devastating critique of society. ere’s also aload of old carpets in it which are quite expensive to transportaround so that explains the high ticket price. So being a father has changed your stand-up?Yes. But for the better. Looking tired and dead suits my act. Also, because I’m too tired to learn anything verbatim the shows are morediscursive and naturalistic now, which is good. Also, I used to bevery cynical, but when you have kids you can’t take any pleasure inthe abject failure of the world. You have to hope, for their sake, thatthings get better, which is an interesting place to do stand-up from.In your TV series you said you hadn’t got any jokes. Is that true? Yes, but people do laugh. I do stories and odd ideas really, not jokesas such. If I do a joke it sort of breaks the spell of the show andsticks out like a sore thumb. What difference has being on television made to your stand-up?I don’t know. More people are coming. But I don’t know if they’recoming to see me, or just someone they’ve heard is on the TV. Itdoesn’t seem to make the shows go any better or worse. ere’s stillpeople in that don’t get it. ere’s just more people generally in theroom. You must have been pleased to win two British Comedy Awardslast year?I’d rather not talk about it to be honest. I found it very confusing. Idon’t know who chooses them or where they came from. It was abig surprise. I was happy for about ten seconds and then I juststarted worrying about whether people would come to see meexpecting ‘award winning comedy’ and then just hate what I do. Icouldn’t go to the ceremony as I was working. When I got home Iput the TV coverage of the aftershow party on. I saw a load ofskittles with the faces of comedians on. ey had all fallen downapart from one with my face on. And then a woman in a red dressran up and kicked it over, very violently. It was all quite strange really. You caused a lot of controversy when you wrote Jerry Springer e Musical. You mean Jerry Springer e Opera? Jerry Springer e Musical istwo rubbish things together so it isn’t funny. Jerry Springer eOpera is funny because it’s two different things. And I didn’t writeit. I co-wrote the words with Richard omas. It was his idea and hewrote all the music. I’m fed up of talking about it to be honest. A farright pressure group called Christian Voice made up a load of liesabout its content and stirred up 65 000 people who hadn’t seen itinto wanting it banned for being blasphemous, so it basically closedand we never saw any money really for five years’ work. e guy incharge of Christian Voice, Stephen Green, even the Daily Mailwon’t talk to him these days. I was very proud of the piece but thestress surrounding it means I don’t really like thinking about it.What’s the worst heckle you’ve ever had?I can’t remember. People tend not to heckle me. I don’t really inviteit. If people shout stuff out it’s usually funny or helpful. at said Idid a show at the Lowry in Salford and a drunk Turkish man camein and just kept going on at me for so long it meant there was noway I could really do the show as written, which was a shame. evenue tried to make out it was my fault and that I should reimburse

people who wanted refunds out of my own pocket, so now if thereare persistently disruptive hecklers, like there were last time I was inCambridge, I force them out of the theatre myself and barricade thedoor with chairs. In the early 90s you were something of a comedy sex symbol, butnow you are grey haired and very overweight. Does this make youfeel sick?I find that question quite offensive to be honest, but I will answer itanyway. It works better for my comedy to be old and decrepit, but Ido miss being fit and thin. I have to suffer for my art I suppose, andso do my audiences.Frankie Boyle has described you as ‘irrelevant and flabby’. Whatdo you think of that?Has he? I didn’t know that. I can see what he means. If you wantpunchy well-written one-liners like he does you’re not going to getthem from me, so I suppose what I do is irrelevant to what he feelscomedy is. I wouldn’t imagine there’s much cross over of audience. And I am flabby. So he’s right on both counts. I met him once ortwice. He was actually very nice. He lived near me for a bit and oneof the old ladies at the church my wife goes to said “e Scottishcomedian from off the telly” was always going round to check shewas alright, because she was a bit disabled, and help with stuff in herhouse. But then money started going missing. She couldn’t confronthim about it, obviously. He moved away soon after. Back to ScotlandI think.Who are your favorite comedians?Well, everything we think of as break-throughs in stand-up hasalready been done better and first by Lenny Bruce. I think the bestliving comics are Daniel Kitson and Jerry Sadowitz and KevinMacAleer, who is Irish. I really like Paul Sinha, who is a gay Hindu, and Simon Munnery. Boothby Graffoe is very good, a musicalcomedian. Greg Fleet, who is an Australian who doesn’t come herereally. I don’t really like any comedians under 40. I don’t think youcan really be any good at stand-up until you are 40. I don’t like anyAmerican comedians either, except some of the dead ones.Comedians seem much funnier when they’re dead, I think. I likedDave Allen when I was a kid. My wife, Bridget Christie, is also onof my favorite comics. I thought she was so funny I married her.People say, ‘that must be funny, being married to a comedian.’ Butthe laughs soon wear off. en it becomes like any normal marriage.Awful.What can people expect from you in the future?Well the audience numbers I’m getting now are big enough to dostadium gigs like all the famous comics, so I’m wondering if there’s away of making that idea interesting or subversive. I’ve signed up formartial arts and contemporary dance classes for when this tour isover, and I’ve been talking to some people at e Circus Space inEast London about what is entailed in being shot out of a cannon. Iwant to study kung fu with the Shaolin Monks. I’ve also been doingNeuro Linguistic Programing studies, to try and control the mindsof audiences to laugh at what I want them to, and mass hypnosisideas, thinking about how Hitler and Stalin manipulated crowdresponses. I’ve been trying to see how far I can spit ping pong balls, and trying to contact that guy who used to dance with ferrets downhis tights on TV at night in the 80s. It’s all good stuff. Also, in the19th c the Hippodrome eatre in London had a show withelephants in a water tank. I don’t think you’re allowed to do that sortof thing to animals now but I saw a show where someone swam in atank with a python in Paris and these are all the sorts of things I’mthinking about for the next big tour, which won’t be until about2016, so I’ve got lots of time to learn all these skills and get fit.And get the snake?Well, I don’t know if it will be a snake. It might be just a big worm.In Australia there are worms that can grow up to 9 feet long. eGippsland earthworm. Maybe I’ll use one of them

Chain Ferry and Shell BayMEMORIES OF SANDBANKS

“We lived in Bournemouth in the 1930sand the chain ferry was the way wedeparted from the conurbation toexplore the wonders of Dorset’sdramatic coastline, our Jurassic playground.

We had no car and so to reach the delectable sands of Shell Bay,we had to catch a bus to Sandbanks and then travel as footpassengers on the ferry across the narrow entrance to Poole Harbourreputed to be one of the largest natural harbours in the world. eferry was and still is run on a chain even though the old ferry hasbeen superseded by new improved models and it is probably theonly sensible way of crossing this narrow opening in view of thestrong coastal currents; even this method of transport although tiedto the strongest of cables is carried somewhat sideways by the tides. We marvelled at the thickness of the metal chain and wanted totake a closer look, but Father warned us to stand very clear of it,because the cable had considerable movement and was capable ofmaiming one for life.

So the excitement of the day out began before we reached ourdestination and once aboard the ferry, we rushed up to the top deckto see the vast panorama of the harbour and to view our destination:the widest expanses of sand that we had ever seen with only ascattering of people; hoorah! Before we reached the other side in amatter of about 15 minutes, Father insisted on our going below tolook at the engine turning the cog wheel which grasped theenormous chain.

Once landed, we hustled to the sea side of the peninsula wherethere was a large ramshackle hut which served light refreshmentsand then ploughed our way through the softest of sand which wasnever disturbed by the tide; this was hard work and it seemed aneternity before we had reached a mini-headland and were able towalk over firm sand at the water’s edge in Studland Bay. Fatherjollied us along this arduous part of the walk by telling us that thesands would sing to us if we swished our feet along and sure enoughthey did, but I was a wee bit disappointed because I was anticipatinga jolly tune and discovered that what we heard was only one note

regardless of the way we moved our feet. However, it was good funfinding out how much noise my two sisters and I could create if weshuffled in unison.

Rounding the curve we discovered innumerable shells as onemight expect from its geographical name, ‘Shell Bay’; we wereespecially delighted by one particular shell which was about the sizeof a thumb nail with extensions and which had a convenient smallhole one end from which its inmate must have escaped when itoutgrew its shell. Both sides of this beautiful find were pearl-likeand, when we arrived home, we were able to extend the enjoymentof our wonderful day out by threading together some of theseattractive finds to make excellent necklaces.

Another shell which we collected was the topshell if some of itspinkish outer covering had been rubbed off revealing the pearl-likenacre; fan shells also attracted us because of their fine symmetricalshapes but razor shells and mussels in abundance we largely ignored.Occasionally, one of us would discover a cowrie shell and then therewere huge whoops delight.

After lunch we were left to do some exploring of our picnic spot.e wide beach was everywhere backed by great sand dunes coveredwith marram grass which holds the drifting sand in place largelybecause of its long straggly roots which delve deep down to findwater and nourishment. Father warned us that the blades of thisgrass were sharp; of course we believed him but I had to try formyself, because, not having any experience of pampas grass, I couldnot conceive of grass having a knife like edge; a small cut on myhand proved evidence. We were therefore careful not to rushthrough the grass with our bare legs when we played hide and seekamongst the dunes.

Typically childlike we discovered an even more exciting pastime;we collected our wax covered thick cardboard dinner plates and tookthem to the steepest and least vegetated dune and sitting on themcascaded down to the beach below in a flurry of sand. Needless tosay these improvised toboggans did not last long and so on futuretrips to Shell Bay we tried to remember to take an old tin tray.

A suitable time having elapsed since eating, we went for ourswim; the warm water was soft and caressing to my ankles and the

waves were mere ripples because this was a beach facing east andmuch protected by the curve of the bay out to the promontory ofOld Harry rocks. I waded out and out and yet out again and still thewater did not reach much above my knees so when I tried to swimmy tummy got in the way! But it was great to splash about.

Naturally we would have liked to explore the inviting landbeyond the dunes which seemed to be full of small paths, but Fatherhad warned us that it was the land of snakes and in particular‘vipers’. Such a word struck terror into our hearts so we neverexplored beyond the dunes. On occasions though our parents wouldguide us through the colourful heather and gorse to view a quiteexpansive lake which was called the Little Sea and which wasframed by just a few willows and pine trees.

e fun was nearly over as the homeward trek began; we alwaysseemed to be somewhat late to catch the ferry back so we had tofollow the quickest route which was a stretch of tarmac nearly twoand a half miles long, which ran in a dead straight line except forone minor bend and we children were not allowed to lag behind.Luckily cars were few and far between and there was supposedly aninfrequent bus service but we never saw one until we arrived at theferry. e heather sprinkled with clumps of gorse extended for mileseither side and although most attractive in bloom did little to raiseour spirits. Nearly always we just caught the ferry; otherwise wewere faced with a long wait especially after six o’clock when it ranonly once an hour.”

e chain ferry is the shortest route connecting Bournemouthand Poole with Swanage and the Isle of Purbeck and carries vehiclesand foot passengers every day, weather permitting. e idea ofoperating a car ferry service here was largely the brainchild of FrankAman from Totland Bay on the Isle of Wight. With his two sons,Gerard, an engineer, and Arthur, a stockbroker, he was instrumentalin starting the Bournemouth-Swanage Motor Road and FerryCompany in 1923 and maintained the family connection with thebusiness until 1961.

Stone for the slipways and the road foundations came fromquarries on the Isle of Purbeck, mostly from the cliff-face quarry atSeacombe, which is between Dancing Ledge and St. Aldhelm’s Head.

Ferry No. 1 began the service onJuly 15th 1926. It was steam-drivenand originally constructed to carry15 cars at any one time, latermodified to accommodate 18 cars.e service was popular from thestart and in the first short summerseason 100,000 passengers and12,000 cars were ferried across the400-yard harbour mouth.

e service continued until theoutbreak of World War II when arestricted service was introduced. After the fall of France, the ferrywas taken over by the military andclosed to the public for theduration. Studland Bay and thesurrounding heath became abattle-training area for the troopswho were to take part in theD-day landings in France.

At the end of the war the ferrywas in need of an extensive refitand the road too requiredsubstantial repairs to bomb andshell craters, as well as the removalof tank traps and ‘Dragons Teeth’obstacles so it was not until 1946that the service was resumed. Fora short while a second ferry wasused during the extended refits ofFerry No. 1.

Ferry No. 2 was alsosteam-driven. It was a small ferrythat had been purchased after itbecame redundant on the East toWest Cowes service on the Isle ofWight. With space for only 8cars and was really too small foruse.

During the 35 years that itwas in service Ferry No. 3 provedto be very reliable. Diesel-electricpowered, it carried a maximum of28 cars. It was equipped withthree Ruston diesel engines andnormally operated on two ofthese; this meant that at least oneengine acted as a spare at all timesand also repairs could be carriedout without making any changesto the scheduled service times.

Annually the ferry carriedsomething in the order of 650,000vehicles of various sorts, up to the

then 10 ton weight limit, and wellover 1 million people. Ferry No. 3helped enormously to popularisethe service, which, over the years, attracted a hard-core of regularusers and provided a uniqueexperience for visitors to the area, many of whom were prepared towait in quite long queues in order totravel on the ferry.

In 1961 the Raglan PropertyCompany took over the businessand in the 1980s the company wassold on to its present ownersFairacres Group Ltd. and manyimprovements have since been made. Both slipways have been completelyrebuilt, mains electricity laid on toShell Bay, the old wooden buildingsat Shell Bay replaced with a modernoffice, a roundabout and new tollbooths constructed at Shell Bay anda new computerised toll systemintroduced. Some of the latterchanges were made to improve themethod of toll collection prior to theintroduction of the latest ferry, thefourth to operate this service but thefirst to actually have a name -Bramble Bush Bay - after a small baylocated close to the Shell Bay side ofthe crossing.

is current diesel-hydraulicpropelled ferry came into service inJanuary 1994 and has a nominalcapacity of 48 cars but can quiteeasily accommodate 52 withoutdifficulty, also buses, coaches and largetrucks. Despite new and improvedroads on the Wareham route roundPoole Harbour, this crossing remainsat least as popular as ever, if not moreso.

run by Amika London, offering an eclectic mix of internationalopera, jazz and swing sounds. e tempo increases throughout theevening as organisers encourage the guests to party the night away. After the prize giving on Saturday evening, ‘Beach Party the Polo’will kick off, infusing the chic surroundings with a festivalatmosphere as live bands will perform, followed by the beats ofinternational House DJ Colin ‘StarRocker’ Pereira.

e competition is being sponsored by a range of companies, including Asahi, Sunseeker, Pommery Champagne and AmikaLondon, and even us here at Sandbanks Life; who are set to sponsorthe Scottish boys.

Captain of Scotland, Jamie le Hardy said of the event:“It’s a very social weekend and it’s a lot of fun – there’s a real buzz! It’s a great spectacle. You’re right next to the action so it’s a great wayof showing polo to the public.”

Jamie Le Hardy is widely considered to be one of the best Britishplayers the game has seen over the last decade and has beendecorated with a host of prestigious awards. Born in Dorset, into anArmy family, whose parents travelled extensively throughout Jamie’searly years, his first recollection of polo was watching his father playin Hong Kong. On returning to the UK, Jamie became involved inpony club polo where his passion for the sport started to flourishand his talent clearly showed.

He began his career fresh out of school; within three years hehad won ‘Young Player of the Year’ award and the British OpenGold Cup:

“ose two events really launched my career and since then I’vebeen one of the highest rated players in England... I’m half Scottish, half English; my Mum’s Scottish. I played for England a lot in mycareer and now I’ve taken up the Scottish mantel and am captainingthe team.”

His other accolades include numerous ‘Most Valuable Player’awards; he was the first England captain to beat Argentina sinceWorld War II and he has won the Golden Jubilee Trophy withPrince Harry.

As well as being a world-class talent on the pitch, le Hardy isalso a professional A Grade Umpire, and an HPA qualified coach;he owns and runs the le Hardy Polo Academy (based in Surrey)which caters for all ages and abilities:

“I spend quite a bit of time coaching, developing horses and

putting a bit back into the sport... If you want to get into polo, havea look at our website and speak to me.” www.lehardypolo.com

World renowned English polo-player Jack Kidd is also one ofthe fantastic sportsman playing during the tournament.

Among his numerous achievements which include tournamentvictories around the world, Kidd has achieved two European goldmedals in the Federation of International Polo Championships ongrass and an Arena Gold Cup win in 2006. In addition to hissuccess as an outdoor player on grass, Kidd is also perhaps one of thebest known players on the Snowpolo circuit; claiming victory atnumerous tournaments, perhaps most notably Cartier in St Morita. He is also a pivotal promoter in the recent launch of the BerenbergSnowpolo tournament in January.

Influenced by his father who show-jumped for Great Britain atthe Olympics and played polo for England, Kidd’s love of the gamebegan at the tender age of 14,

“By the time I was 17 I was a professional and twenty years laterI’m still a pro”, he said.

A truly passionate player, Kidd said of the game:“It’s completely addictive; the most amazing sport you could everplay; to gallop on horses and score goals... its a great, great sport!”

I spoke to Kidd, who having spent the last five consecutive dayson the pitch, was cooling down and getting some well earnedrespite. For a man who plays polo consistently throughout the year, his praise of the British Beach Polo Championships was illustrativeof the fabulous weekend spectators can expect,

“It’s one of the best weekends of the English polo season. I lookforward to it immensely and I look forward to playing against all theother countries”

Spectators can expect some exciting games, watching theseworld-class talents stretched to their best, as the sand surface doesfor a fast paced and technically demanding game:

“Sand is probably the most difficult surface to play on out ofthem all; snow or grass. You have to be very skilled with the horseand very good at hitting the ball in the air.”

When I asked him what visitors to the championships canexpect, Kidd simply said,

“Big parties and big polo matches. It should be a stonker!”

Britain's rich are getting richer, and steel tycoon LakshmiMittal is still the richest of them all, according to theSunday Times Rich List.

e Indian-born billionaire topped the list for the seventhsuccessive year with an estimated fortune of £12.7bn, despite alsosuffering the biggest fall in wealth of any of the 1,000 men andwomen named.

Mr Mittal and his family were worth 4.8bn less than last year, leaving them only just ahead of Uzbek metals magnate andArsenal shareholder, Alisher Usmanov, with £12.3bn. Chelsea FCowner Roman Abramovich came in third with £9.5bn, down£800m on last year.

e wealthiest Briton is the Duke of Westminster, in seventhplace with an estimated £7.35bn, thanks to his central Londonproperty empire.

e combined wealth of Britain's 1,000 richest men andwomen reached a record high of more than £414bn.

Rich List compiler Philip Beresford told us: "Obviously it'svery difficult in this age of austerity when the government putsout the mantra 'we're all in this together' and the rich seem to begetting richer and richer."However, I wouldn't criticize the richbecause a lot of those on this rich list are based here, they'reinvesting in companies here, and if they get richer hopefully therest of us will get a bit more prosperous on the rising tide of wealth."

e Hinduja Brothers, Srichand, 76, and Gopichand, 72,returned to prominence this year, rising five places to claim thefourth spot, with an estimated fortune of £8.6bn, up animpressive £2.6bn on last year.

2012 saw a record eight lottery millionaires joining the list, ledby Europe's biggest lottery winners Colin and Chris Weir atnumber 462, with £160m. ey donated £1m to the ScottishNational Party, making them the country's top political donors, ahead of Peter Cruddas, Sir Anthony Bamford and Lord Sainsbury.

"is year we've got a record 77 billionaires, a lot of themforeign-born billionaires, based in London who like London asthe centre of their particular universe," Mr Beresford said. " Butthe best examples of people who are getting prosperous and richon the back of their own endeavours are Britons like a guy calledMichael Oliver (number 243), who is in his 70s andyet runs the biggest valve-making company in Europe. He'smaking enormous sums of profits and they're generating morejobs and more tax revenue and it's exactly what we need."

London and the southeast still dominate the list with 53% ofentries, but there are now 74 Scottish entries (up from 70 lastyear), and 24 Welsh (the same as last year). e list's compilersadmit it is a "broad brush estimate", based on public accounts, market intelligence, and in some cases the individuals themselves. And those behind the list report more than a slight air ofone-upmanship amongst our wealthiest citizens. Mr Beresfordrelated the story of one man who phoned his friend, also on thelist to say: 'Hello, number 21 here, am I talking to number 36?'"

The biggest spectator polo day in the world is held atGuards Polo Club in the heart of the Royal Park atWindsor. From this year, this historic event will besponsored by Audi, the leading luxury carmaker.is company is no stranger to polo though, as ithas been the sponsor of the England polo team for

several years. is makes it the perfect partner for the leadingshowcase event for the England Polo Team – the Coronation Cupon the Audi International Polo Day.

Last year, the sport’s governing body, the Hurlingham PoloAssociation, in conjunction with Guards Polo Club, celebrated thecentenary of the Coronation Cup, which has been played at thismost famous of polo clubs for 40 of those past 100 years. Eventoday, the Coronation Cup is viewed by English polo players, andindeed some of the most famous international names in the sport, as

the most coveted event to play for during the English polo season.e England team manager Andrew Hine, who has also

captained the England team on this day many times too, believesInternational Day has a flavour that cannot be matched anywhereelse in the world. “You can play in the Argentine Open in Palermo,Buenos Aires, which for many is the Mecca of the sport, with thenoise and 5,000 people on top of you; but when you play at GuardsPolo Club in e Coronation Cup, and you hear the roar of some25,000 people, there is nothing like it anywhere in the world. Noevent can claim those sorts of numbers, and when you get a great, close match, and the crowd in those stands gets behind you, thehairs stand up on the back of your neck. It is the biggest game in theworld. We love that as players. ere’s no greater feeling.”

e England team has dominated the Coronation Cup in thepast couple of years, defeating both New Zealand and Brazil on the

Club’s most famous of grounds – e Queen’s Ground. is year theteam, led by the talented Luke Tomlinson, will be hoping to retainits clean sheet against a talented team from South Africa. is willbe the third time that these two countries have met in thiscompetition and the tally currently stands at 2-0 to the home side.So no pressure for Luke and his team-mates then! But win or lose,Luke, who has worn the skipper’s armband since 2006 knows it willbe a match to remember. “It’s always a great occasion to be involvedin,” he says. “To play for your country, and to be captain, is a highhonour in any sport. It’s always a great feeling to go out there andplay in front of a huge home crowd. As players, it means so much to us.”

e support of Audi at this International Polo at Guards PoloClub on Sunday 22 July not only guarantees to give the best Englishplayers the opportunity to shine on this most famous of days, but isalso enabling the governing body, the Hurlingham Polo Associationand Audi to create a platform of international events at other clubsaround the country too. Audi has created an International TestMatch Series – with England games at Cowdray Park in Sussex,Beaufort in Gloucestershire and, for the first time at CheshireRacecourse too. is not only says much about the depth of talentand interest in the sport in the UK today, but also highlight’s Audi’scommitment to the oldest team sport in the world.

e Audi International Day naturally becomes a late summerhighlight of the British sporting calendar. However, to ensure that itdoes not clash with that other great sporting occasion in 2012, theLondon Olympics, the polo will be staged a week earlier than usual– on Sunday 22 July. Despite this date change, it remains framedaround those other great sporting and social events - Henley,Wimbledon, Ascot and the Lord’s Test match and continues tooffer two outstanding polo games – the Coronation Cup in theafternoon and a morning game – showcasing up-and-comingEnglish talent. Of course this year, in honour of Her Majesty eQueen, the winners of the morning game, Young England v eCommonwealth, will receive a new cup this year – the DiamondJubilee Trophy. Her Majesty, of course, is a huge supporter of thesport, having watched her husband and eldest son play and now twoof her grandsons, HRH e Duke of Cambridge and HRH Prince Harry.

Although there is a new name associated with this event, somethings remain very much the same. Pomp, pageantry and elegancewill be very much the order of the day, with plenty of opportunitiesfor visitors to Guards Polo Club to enjoy some of the finesthospitality available at any sporting event. is may be courtesy ofPink Food in the Guards Members’ Marquee, with its deliciouslunch and afternoon tea menu or seated within Keith’s Prowse’sChukkas marquee. Here guests have the perfect environment fromwhich to enjoy a wonderful, relaxing day of polo, including awonderful Best of British menu in honour of the Diamond Jubilee. Meanwhile Chinawhite will be celebrating its 11th year at theInternational Polo. With hospitality options for both day andevening – or even a combination of the two, this fantastic, dramaticmarquee can offer something for everyone. With leading DJ CalvinHarris headlining the decks in the evening, the marquee willbecome the polo party of the year – if not the decade.e Audi International Day has all the ingredients to create a poloday to remember. So whether you have an Audi invitation to itselegant lunch in the Clubhouse or planning a more informal affairwith friends and family at the Club, there are plenty ofopportunities to create your own lasting memories. reveals this season's hottestlimited editions.

After non-stop Aprilshowers and floods, we've neverneeded a taste of summer likewe do now.

ankfully a spritz offragrance can be evocative ofblue skies, white beaches andfrothy oceans, whatever theweather outside.

So take full advantage of thescent-switching season.

Just as our clothing layersbecome lighter, so too shouldour fragrance - think eau detoilette or eau fraiche. Evenlong-established classic scentslike Jean Paul Gaultier, CalvinKlein and Issey Miyake lightenup for the sunshine season withrefreshing alternatives.

"Wintery perfumes tend tobe spicier, heavier and morecomplex than summerfragrances so by the time thesunshine hits, people are usuallyready for a change," explains

John Stephen, head perfumer ofe Cotswold Perfumery.

"You wouldn't walk downthe beach in a pair of sheepskinboots and, similarly, a strongsandalwood, cashmere wood orblack pepper may be too headyand a touch out of place for thesummer months."

Iam going to Jamaica in two weeks' time for a fortnight and amworried about the hot humid weather and what it will do tomy thick blonde coloured hair? What products will I need totake to help my hair?

Hair needs moisture in the sun and the more you can treat your hairto this secret recipe the better. e Wella Professionals SUNProtection Spray contains an innovative double-phased formulawith a vitamin complex that provides hydration plus highperformance UV protection. Helping you keep your summer colourvibrant as well as your hair in great condition. While you are awayalso use Wella Professionals SUN Hair and Body Shampoo, it willgently help to remove impurities from sunscreen, salt andchlorinated water, while actively restoring moisture. With specialsingredient of Vitamin E, it leaves both your hair and body feelinginvigorated.

I was wondering if I could have some advice on how to look aftermy hair when I go on my holidays to a Spa?If you are planning to visit a Spa, we would recommend the choiceof products from either the Wella System Professional or Kérastaseranges. Both salon-only brands offer shampoos and conditionersthat take care of your hair as well as removing any chlorine if you’regoing to be using spa pools or swimming. Chlorine reacts with thechemicals used to colour hair, causing dryness and discoloration, soremoving it is important. If you’re wondering which products mightbe best for you, just ask your Scissors stylist who will be happy torecommend the correct ones for your hair and scalp type.

I have naturally ginger hair and have coloured it dark brown for anumber of years. I am sick of the dark hair now and would reallylike to be a lighter shade of brown but not sure if this can be donewith my natural hair colour? I have light blue eyes and pale skin.Any advice would be greatly appreciated.Your dream can certainly be achieved but is definitely best achievedby a Wella Professionals Master Colour Expert. At Scissors we prideourselves on our Wella Professionals Master Colour Expert so callyour nearest Scissors salon now to find out how to book aconsultation and appointment. Please could you tell me what hair colour would suit me? I havemedium brown hair going grey, a cool skin tone and am 47. I wantfoils and think they should be caramel and honey tones, I wantsomething to blend in with the increasing amount of grey comingthrough, would this work?e caramel and honey tones sound fabulous and woven foilhighlights are a great way to add texture to the hair as well asfantastic-looking colour. At Scissors our colourists love using asunkissed lights effect where the front area has more highlights andthe remaining hair has less and is painted an all-over natural colour.

What can I do about my frizzy hair? You don't always have to fight it -- find ways to enhance it instead.Work on finding products to manage your frizz such as WellaSystem Professional which has not only styling products but alsocare products to ensure your frizzy hair is managed and your curlsenhanced..... and don't over-do the straighteners! Hello heatwave! Winter jackets have finally been thrown to the backof the wardrobe and replaced by a thick layer of sun cream.

But for some, the sun appearing in a blaze of glory didn't triggeran urge to rush out and stock up on SPF... More than a third ofBrits don't wear any form of sun protection on home soil, accordingto a recent St Tropez survey.

It seems some us are aren't seeing the light when it comes tobasic sun safety.

Worryingly, a fifth of the population believe that you need toburn your skin to get a tan.

"Sunlight makes us feel good," says sk:n's medical director DrAskari Townshend.

"But UV radiation is damaging to our skin. Gen up so you canhave fun in the sun without paying the price with your complexion."

SOAK UP THE RAYS SAFELY WITH OUR EXPERTGUIDE TO SUN FACTS AND SUN FICTION.

TRUE: You need to protect with an SPF at home and abroad"Sun safety should not simply be saved for far away shores," saysAbi Cleeve of Ultrasun UK."e risk to skin health from harmful UV rays in the UK is just assignificant as from those abroad, so protecting yourself and yourfamily whilst out and about in this country is a must."

FALSE: A golden glow equals healthy skin"Tanning is a response to damage in the skin," warns Mike Brown,Boots suncare expert."e damage will be less through a sunscreen but the lower the SPFthat you use, the less damage protection you get."If you're still insistent on getting a tan, then the actual SPF youneed is that which stops you burning whilst still allowing maximumtanning. is will vary according to your skin type or sun sensitivity."TRUE: Red means danger"A single case of bad sunburn can double your chances of gettingskin cancer," says Anna Gucova, nurse specialist at e Mole Clinic."Aim to apply a minimum SPF20 around 30 minutes before goingoutside."Around 85% of melanoma cases are caused by sunburn, so avoidburning at all costs. If your skin starts to feel irritated, get out of thesun and apply SPF immediately."FALSE: You don't need protection in the shade"e shade offers at most SPF5-7," explains Dr Sam Bunting, cosmetic dermatologist and Piz Buin ambassador."Around 84% of the sun's rays bounce off the ground so get underan umbrella, especially if by the sea. You should reapply sunprotection every two hours."

INTERVIEW WITHCOOLTINTSLife Magazines went to meet

Tim Green from Cooltints inChristchurch which is a familybusiness delivering heat andglare reduction solutions to

homes and business throughout thesouthern half of the UK.

LM: When did you set up your business?TG: April 2006LM: How are your family involved in thebusiness?TG: My wife Mandy helps with admin andfielding customer enquiries in the firstinstance. Our two eldest boys help with theinstallation.LM: What brought you into this business?TG: I needed to add to my windscreenrepair business, so I started doing vehicleglass tinting which then led to flat glasstinting.LM: Some people might not be familiarwith Solar Protective Film, what are thebenefits?TG: Having Solar Protective Film is a quickand easy way to upgrade your windows andother glazing giving you a reduction in theeffects of solar radiation (less heat and glare)which in turn reduces the effects of fadingon furnishings and artwork.

From an energy efficient point of view, the film will save you money in terms ofheating and air conditioning.

It enhances the appearance of anybuilding, there are many different shades, colours and grades of tint available and thefilm is much more cost effective comparedto blinds or shutters.LM: Who or what type of businesses couldit benefit?TG: At home it’s perfect to use forconservatories and atriums. e main businesses that contact us areshop-fronts with valuable window displays. It’s also perfect for offices that have largeglazed areas facing the sun or any businessesor properties where privacy is an issue.LM: Now, for the science bit, How does itwork?!TG: It is a polyester film that is applieddirectly to the glass and so becomes a partof the glazing system. It has either ametallic or ceramic component in it thatreflects the solar energy back through thepanel. is is the most effective way toreduce heat and glare through glass.LM: What’s the last project that youcompleted?TG: e Coastal Gallery in Lymington andthe offices of PKT MNY in Lymington.

Both premises’ had problems with directsun on their windows.

e gallery had valuable artworks ondisplay which were getting damaged by theheat and UV radiation. We applied aceramic film which makes a significantreduction in the solar radiation but is alsovery clear so people could still see in andlook at the window displays.

PKT MNY has a large window whichfaces the afternoon sun and fronts onto apublic walkway and so their issues wereprivacy and heat and glare. We used adaylight natural film to provide goodprivacy from the outside and a significantreduction in heat and glare so the office wasmore comfortable with good visibility fromthe inside to the outside.LM: What’s next or new for Cooltints?TG: More projects hopefully, collaborationwith architects is something I am lookingfor, both residential and commercialproperties. Also there are new productscoming through all the time from PMXCoatings, our supplier.

For over sixty years, pioneers McIntosh have been creating some ofthe world’s leading and best known sound-systems.

Originally founded in 1949 in Silver Springs, Maryland, thebrainchild of two America businessmen Frank McIntosh andGordon Gow, the company began its evolution from the supplier ofdomestic post-war amplifiers, to become a major staple of theinternational music scene and one of the world’s most respectedproducers of the finest quality sound-systems.

e brand-leader’s success really began in the 1950s with the risein commercial broadcasting. e company’s founding fathersrealised the demand from home audio enthusiasts for better audioequipment and these domestic customers quickly discovered thatHigh Performance McIntosh amplifiers worked beautifully in theirhome audio systems.

e 1960s was likewise a decade marked by growth andinnovation; it saw the advent of their famous front-panelillumination; while the end of the decade saw McIntosh equipmentpowering the three days of peace, love and music for the hundreds ofthousands of people who attended the festival; Woodstock.

e following decade proved just as fruitful for the company;

McIntosh grew in both product selection and new productcategories. Loudspeakers were introduced along with a family ofmatching amplifiers, tuners, and preamplifiers. Glass faceplates andthe signature blue amplifier power meters solidified the trademarkMcIntosh look.

After the heady heights of the previous two decades, the 1980sbrought with it new challenges for the company. ere was increasedcompetition from both domestic and imported products, along witha recession which stalled sales growth. However, McIntosh took onthese challenges, and turned them into great opportunities; theyresponded with new innovative designs that won over a whole newgeneration of customers. ese included the advent of the firstMcIntosh CD player; the company became a leading light in CDplayer design and also swayed many to become CD disk fans.

e 1990s brought with it visions of expansion into the car audiomarket; they introduced their first automotive line in 1994 and bythe end of the decade the first McIntosh powered BMW hit theroad; later automotive companies including Harley Davidson, FordMotor Company and Subaru followed in BMWs footsteps. e100th anniversary Ford GT introduced in 2003, featured a custom

designed McIntosh sound-system. In addition to their established and flourishing sound-system

production, today the tentacles of McIntosh’s empire have reachedMT10 turntable system and the AP1, which is the first McIntoshapplication for iPad, iPhone and iPod allowing users to enjoy thetraditional McIntosh user interface when they operate their AppleiTunes device.

Managing Director of Bournemouth based Jordan Acoustics, ahigh-end audio retailer, Tim Jordan, said of the brand,

“e unique thing about McIntosh is firstly it’s appearance; it’sgot a very retro cool look about it, but it’s incredibly modern andcutting edge internally; there’s some serious engineering to it! Butsecondly and most importantly, it is unique because of the way thatit sounds. It inspires a pride of ownership; it has a certain kudos andaura about it that very few brands can get near to.”

Jordan Acoustics were awarded UK distribution rights toMcIntosh three years ago. Dealing directly with the factory andimporting the product into the country, Tim and his colleagues dealpersonally with the end user. Although they supply a small networkof dealers, Jordan Acoustics mainly supply to high net worthindividuals from all walks of life;

“Parts of our portfolio cater for famous musicians who want tobe able to hear what they have produced as clearly as possible, whileother parts of our portfolio are catering for very high net worthpeople, who just want the best! ey have nice watches, nice cars, nice houses, nice clothes; so they want a nice hi-fi system!”

Tim’s passion for the brand is clear; and the aim of JordanAcoustics is to expand both awareness and lifestyle use of McIntoshhigh-end audio systems.

“We guide people very completely. Our advice tailors aroundfinding a very real life sound; for instance if you go to a jazz club andlisten to a performance and you come home; we want our systems toreplicate that vibe as closely as possible – despite the liveperformance in itself being a very unique thing. We want people toget pleasure from their recording at home rather than having thismassive void between how good the actual performance was andhow average their hi-fi system sounds.”

Tim’s hopes for the future are bright,“We will maybe look at putting our high-end systems into some ofthe luxury yachts; there are lots of avenues to look at when we’redealing with the luxurious product that we are.”

Jordan Acoustics expanded down to their current and secondlocation in Hurn only twelve months ago (their other store is basedin Fife, Scotland). Located in the lovely setting of Parley Manor, their showroom is open to the public Tuesday –Friday,9.30am-5.30pm and Saturday 9.30am-3pm. ey also have astunning purpose built demonstration room for people to experiencethe product before purchasing.

Coastal style is guaranteed to help any lingering winter bluessail away, and it couldn't be easier to create. Fresh whitepaint, blue and white stripes and boat and seashore

accessories will soon have you in holiday-happy mode, no matterwhat your location. Gabrielle Fagan sources seaside homeware.

Coastal style is on the horizon again - a sure sign that summer'sreally on its way.

e look returns with the predictability of the tide but it's alwayswelcome because it's just the thing to blow away the cobwebs andgive rooms a bright and breezy outlook.

Even better, you can splash out and evoke a beside-the-seasideretreat or simply take a modest paddle cost-wise and gobeachcombing on the high street for a few well-chosen pieces.

"e maritime trend always finds favour because it conjures anatmosphere of relaxed informality which is ideal for summerhomes," says Paul Clarkson, head of home buying at Sainsbury's.

"You can recallmemories of the beachwith this breezy,seaside-inspired trendwhether it's stripedtextiles, wall art or evencrockery in nauticalshades of blue, whiteand red for a relaxedbeach hut feel."

SO COME ON BOARD FOR CHIC COASTAL STYLE...SALUTE THE STYLEA blue-and-white colour scheme is the classic interpretation ofcoastal - and it's an easy-on-the-eye, crisp, clean look.

If you want to guarantee blue skies, no matter what the weather, you could paint a feature wall in a deep blue. Dulux's Sea Blue silkemulsion, £19.59 for 2.5 litres from Homebase, couldn't fail to liftyour spirits on grey days.

If you want to sail further away from home, but your budget willonly stretch to a coastal day trip, you could evoke the beauty offoreign surfing shores with a breaking wave mural. Lowers 00217,from £122 from specialists JW Walls, would delight surfer dudes.

Seaside chic: One of my favourite papers is the colourful BoatStamps self-adhesive wallpaper, which looks like a treasuredcollection lifted from a philatelist's album. It starts from £25 forhalf a square metre from Purlfrost.

COASTAL RETREATPlump, squashy sofas covered with loose cotton or linen throws inneutral shades or sun-bleached blue and white stripes, white paintedfloorboards, and a few maritime accessories will have you smellingthe sea no matter what your location.

"More timeless than a trend, coastal chic is a popular andwidespread theme that's a perennial favourite," says Sarah Quilliam, head of product design at window specialists Hillarys.

"is year's look combines cool blue tones with calming taupes, and those who feel a little more adventurous could add accents ofcoral, turquoise and green.

"Roman and roller blinds in muted or stripy fabrics, or palewooden venetian blinds, are a great way to help create a casualseaside atmosphere and are far more suitable than heavy drapes thatwould block light and retain heat."

Fusion Ocean Blue striped rollers, from £56, measured, madeand fitted, (61cmx76cm) from Hillarys, call for details.

Seaside chic: Create a special coastal corner in a room fordaydreaming and summer chilling. Display holiday photos or acollection of seashore finds on a cupboard or open shelves, and add

an easy chair covered in a striped fabric.A large white-painted rowing boat-shaped shelving unit,

£79.95, from online interiors company Homehomehomeperfectly suits a sail-away style. A neat white woodenshow cabinet, £45, from John Lewis could be ideal forshowing off small beachcomber finds.

Count the hours down to a holiday with a Tuwhitewash beach clock, £12, from Sainsbury's onlineand in store.

SEASIDE SAVERSere's no need to push the boat out to get this look,as there's a wealth of irresistible seaside accessoriesaround.

"Create an eclectic finish with a selection ofinteresting vases and bowls filled with acombination of fresh flowers, shells, or pebbles,"says Carole Brown, marketing director atDunelm Mill.

"Natural textures work well with crisp whiteand blue, so feature woven baskets, driftwoodlamps and wooden furniture."

It's all too easy to go overboard on cushions, which are now almost being regarded as 'roomart' by designers, and there's a raft load with aseaside theme.

Dunelm Mill's Beach Huts cushion,£19.99, is a winner with its photo image ofbrightly-painted shelters and blue skybackdrop.

Alternatively, would-be seafarers mightprefer those decorated with anchors, such asTesco coastal cushion, £6, only available instores. Or plump for Sainsbury's Tu Anchorcushion, £10 (available in selected stores), orMatalan's Harbour Yacht cushion, emblazoned with a lifebelt, £8.

Seaside chic: As this is akick-off-your-shoes relaxed style, clutter willbe a distraction. Get ship-shape and stow it allaway in blue and white striped Coastal Ropehandled storage baskets, £22 for a set of threefrom Sainsbury's. Available in selected storesonly.

Keep to the theme with a set of WoodenBeach Hut hooks, numbered one to three,£29.95 from e Vintage Gift Company.Dunelm Mill's Brighton Beach hut collectionof three storage tins, £4.99, would bring order toa kitchen.

Get those jobs done with alittle help from DIY guruJulia Gray. is month: howto harness sun's power byinstalling solar panels.

You may think that solar panels are a bigexpense and so not for you, but if you'replanning to stay in your home for a longtime, installing them can make sensefinancially, as well as being beneficial to theenvironment.

ere are two types of solar panel - onesthat generate electricity (solar photovoltaicsor PV), which are most popular, and onesthat heat your home's water (solar thermal). With both, you'll cut your utility bills andCO2 emissions, but the benefits don't endthere.

Solar PV panels can also earn youmoney, thanks to the Government'sFeed-In Tariffs scheme, which pays you forthe electricity you generate and use and alsofor any surplus you supply to the NationalGrid.

is could give you savings and incomeof around £670 a year, according to theEnergy Saving Trust. Its website(www.energysavingtrust.org.uk) features aSolar Energy Calculator, where you canwork out how you could benefit from thescheme.

An average 3kWp (kilowatts peak) PVsystem, which will produce enoughelectricity for around 75% of a typicalhousehold's needs, costs in the region of£10,000.

Solar thermal panels cost much less, ataround £3,000 to £5,000 for a typicalsystem. ey'll provide around 33% of thehot water you need at home (depending onthe size of your household), but won't saveyou much money - between £55 and £80 ayear, according to an Energy Saving Trustfield trial.

You may be able to get a grant to helpwith the cost of the installation, or otherfinancial assistance - check the EnergySaving Trust website for the latest schemes.

As well as the thermal panels, you'll needa boiler or immersion heater to give youadditional hot water and sometimes tomake the water heated by the panels hotter, especially in winter. You may also have tochange your boiler and hot-water cylinderto a compatible one.

If putting the panels on a pitched roofisn't an option, you may be able to mountthem on a frame on the ground, a wall or aflat roof instead.

As with all solar panels, how well they'llwork will depend on how much sun theyget - the sunnier the position, the better, although they can still work on cloudy days.Solar panels are heavy, so ground or

wall-mounted ones could be a good optionif the roof can't take the weight.

If your home's leasehold, you may needpermission from the freeholder to installsolar panels. Restrictions may also apply ifyou live on 'designated land', such as aconservation area, and if the building'slisted, so ask your local council about whatyou can and can't do.

Where planning restrictions apply, solarroof tiles or slates may be acceptable to theplanners. ese are more expensive thanpanels, though.

Standard solar panels are readilyavailable - try the B&Q website(www.diy.com), where panels start at £2,198for two. Alternatively, go tohttp://local.which.co.uk orwww.microgenerationcertification.org tofind solar panel installers.

As ever, get as many quotations aspossible to find the best deal.

PRODUCT OF THE MONTHink all kitchen roll is the same? irstPockets Multi Cloth is a really thick, absorbent kitchen roll that performs well inday-to-day, DIY and deep, spring cleaning.

It's different to most products because ithas a cloth-like feel, which is created in aprocess called Airlaid. Latex is used as abinder and it isn't soluble in water, so thefibres are strong even when wet.

e result is paper towels that not only

feel similar to cloth, but can also be rinsedand reused (without falling apart), so they'remore versatile than most.

irst Pockets Multi Cloth is availablefrom Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrisons andAsda, priced £2.39.

HOW-TO TIPIf you're fixing a skirting board to the wall, countersink the screws so you can fill overthem with wood filler for a neat finish.

You'll also need to use flexible filler inthe gap between the skirting board and thewall - wipe off the excess thoroughly as youapply it, and you may not need to paint over it.

It's easier to paint the skirting boardbefore it's fitted, especially if it's going to bea different colour to the wall, but you willneed to paint over the wood filler

Over the last twentyyears every aspect ofthe home has been

the subject of makeovers andupgrading. We have seenkitchens, bathrooms, conservatories, softfurnishings, gardens, sundecks, swimming pools: the list isendless. Or almost endless.

e only area in a home thathas not had the usual lovingcare is the garage: until nowthat is. After years of abuse, the lowly garage is finallygetting a second chance thanksto GarageTek who are theleading garage storage andorganisation company inAmerica and have beenoperating in the UK for fiveyears now. Alastair Broom, theManaging Director in the UKhad been researching theoptions for garages for anumber of years because, coming from a propertybackground he could see theenormous potential that hasbeen the garage.

“In many cases the garage isover 10% of the space in ahouse and yet owners have nothad a sensible proposition todo anything with it. ey willhappily leave their £50,000Mercedes on the drive in allweather whilst there isprobably £1,000 of odds andends lying all over the garagefloor. is really doesn’t make alot of sense and I wasdetermined to find a solution,”says Alastair Broom.“Added to that in a house witha value today of, say £750,000,10% equates to the garagehaving a potential value of£75,000. Does it feel like thatvalue to most owners? Whynot increase its value andtherefore the value of thehouse as well as makingmaximum use of the space?”

THE BENEFITS OFGARAGETEKGarageTek will design andinstall a storage solution thatgets everything off the floorand onto the walls in speciallydesigned cabinets, baskets,

racks and hooks. e mainbenefits are that it is: Easy to keep clean and tidy Gives a bright glossy look

thereby increasing light Easy to move and

re-organise everything whenever you want

 Weather-proof and bug-proof

 Professionally designed and installed

Covered by a 10 year warranty

With options for the walls, floor, ceiling and over 80different units there is clearlysomething for everyone. Andthere is no need to have thewhole garage fitted: the system is so flexible that it is possibleto have just one wall fitted, maybe with a new floor andthe rest can be done at a laterstage if that fits the budgetbetter.

THE VALUE OFVERSATILITYe foundation of theGarageTek system is thepatented TekPanel, a strong, attractive wall panel on whichother system elements areattached. TekPanel is bright, strong and covers the walls ofthe garage and then a modularsystem of high performancecabinets, shelves, baskets andactivity racks are added to the slotted walls with clip-onbrackets.

Get those jobs done with a littlehelp from DIY guru Julia Gray.is month: how to fillawkward and hard-to-fill gaps

in the walls of your homes.Wallpaper, especially textured paper, can

hide a multitude of sins. While you may notbe able to live with it any more, removing itis a risky business because once you do, thewalls (and ceilings) may need replastering.

Not generally a job for DIYers (if youfancy having a go, B&Q does a PatchPlastering & Introduction to Skimmingclass - see www.diy.com/youcandoit),replastering will give you a good finish, although you'll need to fill and sand thewalls once the plaster has dried (it usuallygoes pale pink when it has) to make themas perfect as possible.

Employing a plasterer needn't beexpensive, but it is quite a messy job andeven newly replastered walls can develophairline cracks within weeks, which you'llneed to fill, or cover with lining paper.

Lining paper come in variousthicknesses, with the thickest designed for

walls in the worst state of repair. It's quite common to hang lining paper

horizontally, especially paste-the-wall ones, which are the easiest to use. With these, yousimply apply wallpaper paste to the wallwith a brush or roller and then hang thepaper. You don't have to wait for the pasteto soak in to the paper and you don't haveto grapple with soggy lengths of paper.

Lining paper can be used to makeless-than-perfect walls look better if youdon't want to have them replastered, butlumps and bumps will be noticeable if lightfalls across them - lamps are one of theworst offenders.

Got a wall that's spongy and movesslightly when you press it? e plaster isblown, meaning it's no longer adheredproperly.

e blown area will ideally need to bereplastered, although you may be able to justuse lining paper to keep the plaster in place,as long as you don't put any weight on it,such as tiles or shelves.

If you don't mind the fact that your wallshave seen better days, great. is look often

suits period properties, especially cottages, and shabby-chic homes.

e best way to enhance uneven walls isto use a chalky or flat-matt emulsion. Paintwith any kind of sheen, such as silkemulsion, will emphasise the flaws, so avoidat all costs.

PRODUCT OF THE MONTHPlug It Polyfilla (£5.11, Polycell) is brilliantfor filling awkward and hard-to-fill holeswhere conventional filler wouldn't work.

You simply cut off how much you need, knead it (wearing protective gloves) until itchanges colour, work it into the hole - itstays workable for up to four minutes - andthen fill over it with conventional filler, ifnecessary.

It's that simple - and mess free. But it'smore than just an awkward-gap filler - itcan also be used to plug holes that you needto reuse for refixing curtain poles andshelves, etc.

Plug It sets hard, can be screwed into -there's no need for Rawlplugs - and cansupport up to 20kg in weight.

It can be used both indoors and out forplaster, brick and concrete. A versatile, compact and really useful addition to yourtoolbox.

HOW-TO TIPTo remove polystyrene ceiling tiles, makesure you have a stepladder tall enough toenable you to reach the ceiling withoutoverstretching, as this is dangerous.

e ladder should be on a flat, stablesurface and your floor covering should beprotected from falling debris, unless you'replanning to replace it.

You'll need a wallpaper-stripping knifeto remove the polystyrene tiles, but becareful not to damage the ceilingunderneath, especially if the knife's blade issharp, because plaster can be soft and proneto gouges.

Once you've removed the tiles, you're leftwith the problem of the adhesive they werefixed with - use a hot-air gun to soften itbefore scraping it off. Try scrubbing off anyremaining adhesive with an abrasive spongedipped in solvent thinner.

Be careful when using the hot air gun,as, again, you don't want to damage theceiling - or yourself. Play safe by wearingprotective gloves and goggles, andremember to ventilate the room.

It's also a good idea to wear a shower capto protect your hair from the debris. Ifyou're struggling to remove the adhesive orthe ceiling's damaged, you'll need to skim itor get a plasterer to do it

Surrounded byidyllic pasture landin Christchurch isthe awardwinning, five star

restaurant and rooms, eManor. e continued successof e Manor is due not onlyto its beautiful setting andcarefully designed interior butalso to its award winningSunday lunches.

Group Executive Chef forVan Hagen Leisure, AndyJacob, who is based at eManor is planning somethingextra special for the Jubileeweekend celebrations. Andyhas quite a unique angle withthe menu that he’s created ashe was lucky enough to workon the QE2 in the 80s.

Andy was hand-picked tobe one of six students to goand work on the famous cruiseship for a year, he then stayedon board ship for a further fiveyears; “It was a fantasticexperience and such a greatopportunity, I was only 21 andI was cruising around theworld on one of the mostfamous cruise ships in theworld and cooking for royalty.”

Andy was working in thekitchens on the ship whenAndrew and Sarah Fergusoncame on board after theirwedding in 1986, and he’splanning to recreate one of thedishes that he cooked for theroyal newlyweds at e Manorover the Jubilee weekend.

e rest of the menu thatwill be on offer over the bankholiday Monday and Tuesdaywill be demonstrating the‘Best of British’ with dishesincluding potted shrimp, apicnic platter, the very apt‘queen of puddings’ and ofcourse classics like fish &chips and strawberries &cream.

A new addition to the VanHagen Leisure Group andnew General Manager to eManor, Stuart Brown, isanticipating a very busyweekend “We’re already nearlyfully booked and it will be acase of all hands on deck to

provide our expected levels ofhigh service and quality food.”

Chris Van Hagen, adirector of the company, enthused “Now is the besttime for us to expand thebusiness, the British pubindustry has been strugglingover the last few years but weare lucky enough to have afantastic team behind usincluding builders, designers, management, creators of foodand drink, and of course, staffproviding high standards ofhospitality and service whichall come together to makeeach one of our venues aresounding success.”

“We are very excited aboute Weld Arms as it’s in sucha fantastic location on theLulworth estate. I also have anidea to run bus trips out therefrom e Manor, I’ve managedto pick up a 1970s, YorkPullman City Tour, open top, double decker bus which willbe a brilliant experience forpeople as well as providingtransport over there.”

With so many innovativeideas to make their standard ofpubs a cut above the rest, it’sno wonder that e VanHagen Leisure group and allof the venues in the groupcontinue to do so well.

e only problem with thisrapid rate of expansion isrecruiting enough quality staffin all positions to cope withthe imminent busy summerwhich is already showing allthe signs of being a brilliantone for this local, entrepreneurial company.

L and Rover and Victoria Beckham have unveiled a new bespoke luxurious, hand-nished Range Rover Evoque Special Edition. e exclusively design is the result of a collaboration

between Land Rover Design, led by Gerry McGovern with Victoria Beckham, winner of the coveted Designer Brand of the Year award at the 2011 British Fashion Awards.

Victoria was appointed Creative Design Executive in July 2010 and has worked with the Land Rover design team over the past 18 months to create her Special Edition.

Victoria Beckham said: “I am very excited to be working with Land Rover as I have an enormous amount of respect for the brand. I’ve always driven a Range Rover, for me they are the epitome of quality and luxury. When I rst started working with the team I did a lot of research, and created mood boards to show the team my love of timeless and classic design. I looked at yachts, luxury jets and classic cars. It’s the small detail that makes all the dierence. I want everyone who gets into this car to feel special and empowered by its quality and craftsmanship. I like that it feels luxurious but also has quite a classic edge to it as well as a contemporary feel.”

Land Rover Design Director Gerry McGovern said: “e design of Evoque has truly captured the hearts of customers worldwide. Working with Victoria the intention was to create a Special Edition that extends its character in a new direction through understated, restrained colour and detail changes. Both Land Rover and Victoria Beckham are British luxury brands with credibility and global appeal, this dual ‘Britishness’ makes the collaboration even more exciting especially when considering the huge audience for bespoke products around the world.

Working with Victoria we quickly recognised our similar design tastes and ambition for this car. For example at the rst meeting, Victoria herself inspired the use of rose gold. She was wearing dark clothes and no jewellery apart from a rose gold,

man’s watch. I was struck by the juxtaposition of the masculine watch on a very elegant, feminine wrist. We both agreed it was the ideal way to introduce a softer touch to the bold, assertive exterior colour scheme.roughout the process we were keen to ensure that the vehicle would appeal equally to both men and women, in fact Victoria always maintained that she wanted her husband David to be proud to drive this car. We fully enjoyed working with Victoria and I am condent this special edition will appeal to discerning luxury consumers globally.”

Quintessential British luxury is a hallmark of both the Land Rover and Victoria Beckham brands. is Special Edition allows that impression to be further heightened through the use of the nest quality materials and

craftsmanship. Powered by the lightweight, all-aluminium 240PS 2.0-litre petrol engine the Range Rover Evoque Special Edition will be hand-nished by Land Rover’s Engineering to Order division (ETO) in Warwickshire.

Essential to the design is the high quality hand-nished matt grey paint, unique 20” gloss black forged alloy wheels and luxurious rose-gold details, limited solely to this Special Edition.

Complimenting the ultra-modern, stealth-like exterior is an elegant and luxurious interior. e sport design four-seats are nished in a semi-aniline Vintage Tan leather, with a bold ‘baseball’ stitch detail chosen by Victoria as a tongue-in-cheek reference to her sporting husband David. e same leather is also used to cover the door inserts, arm rests and central storage box lid.

Another personal touch are the exclusive and ultra-luxurious oor mats. e designer explained that when she was a young girl, her father owned a Rolls-Royce and she would enjoy taking her shoes o to sink her bare feet into the thick carpeting. Land Rover’s designers replicated this for her by using mohair, usually reserved for luxury clothing, to make the mats.

Bespoke luggage completes the holistic design package that is the Range Rover Evoque Special Edition with Victoria Beckham. is four-piece set is based on the designer’s own luggage range, using the same high-quality internal structure and clothed in hand stitched black leather. e set comprises two his and her’s wheeled suitcases and wash bags, all of which are lined in the same microsuede used for the roof lining, and as a nishing touch the zip pulls are nished in the same matt grey as the exterior. A beautiful hand stitched leather wallet, with rose-gold detail containing a guide to the exclusive features of the car is co-branded Range Rover Evoque and signed by Victoria Beckham.

Victoria Beckham is a joint venture between Victoria Beckham and Simon Fuller’s XIX Entertainment Ltd.

ABOUT LAND ROVERSince 1948 Land Rover has been manufacturing authentic 4x4s that represent true breadth of capability, versatility and premium design. e Land Rover Defender, Freelander, Discovery, Range Rover Evoque, Range Rover Sport and Range Rover each dene the world’s 4x4 sectors. All Land Rover’s products are designed, engineered and manufactured in the UK with 85% of production exported to over 177 global markets.

The Range Rover Evoque Special Edition with Victoria Beckhamfeatures Land Rover’s hallmark full-time, four-wheel drive andaward-winning Terrain Response system.

craftsmanship.

HEART AND SOUL OF DORCHESTERA

n exciting, new development is happening in ourhistoric county town, Dorchester’s Eldridge PopeBrewery site is being transformed into ‘e new heartand soul of Dorchester’.

e site has been artistically and sympathetically designed toincorporate apartments, duplexes and penthouses all arrangedaround garden squares and courtyards.

As well as providing …new homes to the town, the developmentalso brings a plethora of shops and restaurants, a boutique hotel andspa, cinema and an arts centre to entertain residents and locals alikewhich, being so central will give Dorchester a sure boost in visitornumbers to the town.

e development also has a definite green agenda which includesBrewery Square's water which is drawn from the Brewery's ownaquifer supply used since 1880. is water supplies every tap in thedevelopment as well as the new Dorchester Spa.

is pioneering project will also be home to the country’s firstsolar powered train station as they are revamping the existingDorchester South Station.

Responsible for this urban regeneration project is ResolutionProperty plc and Waterhouse, a pioneering development companybased in London and Dorchester.

Since 1980 Andrew Wadsworth and Robert Ackland, partners inWaterhouse, have been involved with numerous projects, their firstbeing in London’s Docklands; the restoration and conversion oflisted Victorian warehouses and innovative contemporary buildingswhich were the catalyst for large scale regeneration which followed.

e Eldridge Pope Brewery site combines their passion forrejuvenating listed buildings and converting industrial sites.

e original Eldridge brewery was founded by Charles and

Sarah Eldridge in 1833, the company built the Green DragonBrewery in Dorchester in 1837. Soon after John Allen Pope cameinto the partnership, and production moved to the MarinersBrewery, the latter still visible in High West Street, suppling taverns, inns and station hotels along the south coast.

In 1879 two of John Allen Pope’s sons, Alfred and Edwin, opened the Dorchester Brewery in Weymouth Avenue, with its ownwater supply and access to the adjoining south coast railway line, built by Isambard Kingdom Brunel. e Victorian and Edwardianbrewery buildings were designed in an exuberant style by W.R.Crickmay, for whom omas Hardy worked as an architect until1872 when he became a full time writer.

By the end of the 19th Century the company owned 97 freeholdpubs from London to Exeter. e company became the winesupplier to Queen Victoria and was one of the first to be awardedthe Royal Warrant.

roughout the remainder of the 19th and into the 20th centuryEldridge Pope continued to thrive even after a fire in 1922 whenmuch of the Brew house was destroyed. e present Brew house wasrebuilt and reopened 2 years later.

e company’s two most well-known ales were ‘Royal Oak’ and‘Hardy’s Ale’, in recognition of Dorset’s most famous writer.

When Eldridge Pope sold the site in 2002 the company was stillmanaged by Christopher Pope, one of the great great-grandsons ofJohn Pope.
